290 THE GOD DELUSIONpeople is their wonderful Christian charity. What kind of anelectorate could, term after term, vote in a man of such ill-informedbigotry as Senator Jesse Helms, Republican of North Carolina? Aman who has sneered: 'The New York Times and Washington Postare both infested with homosexuals themselves. Just about everyperson down there is a homosexual or lesbian.' 122 The answer, Isuppose, is the kind of electorate that sees morality in narrowlyreligious terms and feels threatened by anybody who doesn't sharethe same absolutist faith.I have already quoted Pat Robertson, founder of the ChristianCoalition. He stood as a serious candidate for the Republican partynomination for President in 1988, and garnered more than threemillion volunteers to work in his campaign, plus a comparablequantity of money: a disquieting level of support, given that thefollowing quotations are entirely typical of him: '[Homosexuals]want to come into churches and disrupt church services and throwblood all around and try to give people AIDS and spit in the face ofministers.' '[Planned Parenthood] is teaching kids to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, every kind of bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism - everything that the Bible condemns.'Robertson's attitude to women, too, would warm the black heartsof the Afghan Taliban: 'I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husbandis the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period.'Gary Potter, President of Catholics for Christian PoliticalAction, had this to say: 'When the Christian majority takes overthis country, there will be no satanic churches, no more free distributionof pornography, no more talk of rights for homosexuals. After the Christian majority takes control, pluralism will be seen asimmoral and evil and the state will not permit anybody the right topractice evil.' 'Evil', as is very clear from the quotation, doesn'tmean doing things that have bad consequences for people. It meansprivate thoughts and actions that are not to 'the Christianmajority's' private liking.Pastor Fred Phelps, of the Westboro Baptist Church, is anotherstrong preacher with an obsessive dislike of homosexuals. WhenMartin Luther King's widow died, Pastor Fred organized a picket

According to his ownwebsite, Phelps has organized 22,000 anti-homosexual demonstrationssince 1991 (that's an average of one every four days) in theUSA, Canada, Jordan and Iraq, displaying slogans such as'THANK GOD FOR AIDS'. A particularly charming feature of hiswebsite is the automated tally of the number of days a particular, named, deceased homosexual has been burning in hell.Attitudes to homosexuality reveal much about the sort ofmorality that is inspired by religious faith. An equally instructiveexample is abortion and the sanctity of human life.FAITH AND THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFEHuman embryos are examples of human life. Therefore, byabsolutist religious lights, abortion is simply wrong: full-fledgedmurder. I am not sure what to make of my admittedly anecdotalobservation that many of those who most ardently oppose thetaking of embryonic life also seem to be more than usuallyenthusiastic about taking adult life. To be fair, this does not, as arule, apply to Roman Catholics, who are among the mostvociferous opponents of abortion. The born-again George W.Bush, however, is typical of today's religious ascendancy. He, andthey, are stalwart defenders of human life, as long as it is embryoniclife (or terminally ill life) - even to the point of preventing medicalresearch that would certainly save many lives. 124 The obviousground for opposing the death penalty is respect for human life.Since 1976, when the Supreme Court reversed the ban on the deathpenalty, Texas has been responsible for more than one-third of allexecutions in all fifty states of the Union. And Bush presided overmore executions in Texas than any other governor in the state'shistory, averaging one death every nine days. Perhaps he was simply
