I stayed awhile<br />
next to Montmartre one summer<br />
where in the courtyard<br />
dancers' long limbs<br />
flowed like the arms of a garden,<br />
flutes and tambourines<br />
scented the air<br />
gypsy-sweet.<br />
In the late evening<br />
I rested along the apartment railing<br />
and counted the steps to Montmartre,<br />
her white dome an apparition<br />
against Paris night.<br />
In the morning<br />
I climbed the steps,<br />
