Rabab Tantawy, born <strong>in</strong> Cairo <strong>in</strong> 1971, grew up watch<strong>in</strong>g her mother draw and create. Although she did not pursue an artistic<br />
profession from the start, Rabab ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the arts and tra<strong>in</strong>ed herself <strong>in</strong> several techniques. methods rang<strong>in</strong>g from<br />
extremely conventional materials such as oil pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g to newer mediums such as spray pa<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
Rabab began her artistic career <strong>by</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> various shows and aggressively explor<strong>in</strong>g street art. “A pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g just comes<br />
through you; you were just a vessel and all you had to do is show up” says Rabab.<br />
The artist used a variety of materials to produce a lighthearted approach to the often-serious topics that underp<strong>in</strong> her work. Her primary<br />
concerns are unification, community, and heritage.<br />
While many artists approach these issues from a different standpo<strong>in</strong>t, Rabab attempts to bridge the gap <strong>by</strong> render<strong>in</strong>g these subjects through<br />
the perspective of universality. “Be<strong>in</strong>g an artist is about cont<strong>in</strong>ually evolv<strong>in</strong>g your art and this happens <strong>by</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g all those new and<br />
different ideas” says Rabab.<br />
Rabab is a gifted artist. She does not utilize prelim<strong>in</strong>ary draw<strong>in</strong>gs. Instead, she uses the canvas as a platform for direct download. There are<br />
no expectations for a f<strong>in</strong>ished project. In some ways, the product is the process of production.<br />
