Public Transportation in Ibadan is largely by Taxis with Mini
Buses, Tricycles and Okada (commercial motorcycles)
playing major roles. Public transportation in Ibadan is
characterized by huge Intercity transport operations
especially at lwo Road, Ojoo, Challenge and Tollgate.
There are three major parks in Ibadan which are poorly
organised, dilapidated, without facilities for passenger
convenience and unregulated hawking/trading activities.
They constitute an environmental eyesore, are generally
unsafe, unhygienic and hazardous. Activities of these parks
encroach upon the carriageways and end up worsening the
traffic conditions around major locations in Ibadan and Oyo
state by extension.
Ibadan however faces serious public transport issues such
as on-street parking, on-street loading, bottleneck locations
at junctions leading to congestion and absence of laybys &
bus shelters. Intercity transport loading points lacks basic
Passenger and infrastructural facilities such as terminal
building, waiting area, loading bay, convenience, parking
lot, etc. There is also encroachment of carriageway, space
limitation, unhygienic surrounding and hawking/trading
activities that poses health danger to passengers.
These frustrating activities also spill onto the carriage way
leading to the unending traffic congestion experienced by
road users daily which in-turn reduces productivity,
increase pollution, reduce economic growth. This could
serve as a disincentive to a lot of investors. Therefore, the
Oyo State Government is determined to restore order and
sanity to the transport sector and change the face of
Ibadan, while ensuring it continues to be the flagship of the
Oyo state economy.
Increasing economic activities and population growth of
Ibadan City and Oyo State in general, there would be an
increase in transport demand and present conditions are
likely to get worse. A transport system that can be expanded
with the growth of the Ibadan metropolis is necessary and
needed.
