we look forward to spending more 

time outdoors in the better weather.

There are lots of events taking place across South 

Yorkshire which we hope will inspire you to fill up your 

calendars. RSPB Old Moor is just one local attraction 

that has inspired generations of people to embrace 

wildlife and the great outdoors for the last 20 years. 

We were invited to meet up with talented twins 

Caroline and Louise from Wilson Design Collective 

and hear about their lifetime love of art and design. 

They have both achieved wonderful things that has 

seen them travel the world and turn their passion into 

a career. 

We have featured the current restoration programme 

at Wentworth Woodhouse’s Camellia House, home to 

some of the world’s oldest camellias. The building will 

be rescued and transformed back into a teahouse that 

will open this summer. 

Despite my editor not sharing the same love of 

football as I do, I have to say she has it in the back 

of the net yet again with another wonderful football 

feature, this time celebrating 100 years of the Totty Cup. 

Spring is a great time to give your wardrobe a refresh 

and we have showcased some of our independent 

shops who can help you to look great this season. 

Thank you to everyone who contacted us to share 

their stories. It was also refreshing that so many 

businesses contacted us to help them raise awareness 

which enables us to continue to deliver a much-loved 

magazine.

Wilson Design Collective 

It’s strikingly obvious that the two women 

we’re here to meet are identical twin sisters. 

But theirs is a story of life imitating art 

around the fabled connection between twins. 

Doncaster artists Caroline 

Perkins and Louise Draper have 

been inextricably bound to each 

other since doctors failed to spot 

one baby hiding behind the other in 

the womb. 

That was in the late ‘70s, long 

before ultrasound scans became 

the norm in antenatal care. Finding 

out at 36 weeks pregnant there were 

two babies came as a shock for 

first-time parents, Margaret and Ian 

Wilson – so much so, Margaret went 

into labour that very same day. 

Born just six minutes apart, 

Louise and Caroline were always 

destined to share a togetherness. 

But they are intrinsically alike in 

many ways, sharing much more 

than just DNA and a birthday. 

Their lives and careers have 

been somewhat symmetrical, 

having both carved out successful 

paths as textile designers for 

acclaimed brands. They went to 

the same art college, graduated 

from the same course at the same 

university with the same grade, and 

were both talent spotted by highend 

designers. 

Jobs saw them spend some 

time apart in their 20s and 30s, 

with Louise relocating to London 

and Caroline to Manchester. But 

even then, their connection never

dwindled. Louise laughs as she tells 

us about a time Caroline came to 

visit her in London and they were 

both coincidentally wearing the 

same top! 

“I had to run in a shop and buy a 

new one so people didn’t think we’d 

planned it,” she says. 

After kids, marriage, and 

redundancies, they both moved 

back home to Doncaster and have 

now joined forces to start their 

own art business, Wilson Design 

Collective, named in honour of their 

maiden surname. 

“It’s exciting to be on this new 

venture with your best pal and it’s 

the first time we’ve worked together. 

We were very close as kids and 

you couldn’t tell who was who. 

Mum used to dress us in different 

clothes but we’d argue over who 

had the nicest dress, so she started 

to buy or make the same dress in 

two different colours. She always 

encouraged us to think of ourselves 

as individuals, but we are naturally 

very similar people,” Louise says. 

They’re so in-sync they can 

finish each other’s sentences. 

But sharing a vision has enabled 

them to utilise their individual skills 

and work collaboratively on each 

piece they create in their signature 

collage technique.

We visited Fox Gallery at 

Mexborough Business Centre to 

see their debut exhibition ‘Coming 

Home’ which was on in January. 

The exhibition had a Yorkshire 

thread, with hints of humour, 

twang and comforting colours like 

treacle sponge and cobalt blue 

to give a nod to their upbringing 

in Doncaster. 

Originally from Balby, the family 

moved to Conisbrough when 

the girls were 11 and they went 

to Edlington School where they 

both began to shine in art. They’d 

been drawing and colouring since 

toddlers – presumably so Mum 

could have five minutes peace 

now and again – but their work 

would regularly surpass that of 

their classmates. 

After school, they both 

decided to study at Church View, 

Doncaster’s former art school, and 

soon enough it was time to apply 

for university. Louise had settled on 

a textile degree at Loughborough 

University, which was also in 

Caroline’s top two choices along 

with Manchester. 

“We were adamant both of us 

wouldn’t get in at Loughborough, 

but we did. So off we went 

together,” Louise says.

MEETS 

You could be forgiven for 

thinking twins might have a 

competitiveness amongst them. 

But it has always been quite the 

opposite for Caroline and Louise. 

They’re in it together, each other’s 

biggest cheerleader, and proud of 

what one another has achieved. 

It was actually some prize money 

Caroline won at university that 

inadvertently set them up for their 

respective careers. 

“I’ve always been the twin that’s 

the more negative about myself. 

But I’d done some work experience 

for Dorma and got a letter through 

the post afterwards saying they’d 

liked my work that much they had 

put me forward for a scholarship. 

I thought I’d got no chance but I 

won it and it was a few thousand 

pounds. I’d always wanted a music 

station so I bought myself one and 

spent the rest of the money on 

materials to make both our graduate 

exhibitions the best they could be,” 

Caroline says. 

And it paid off. The sisters were 

chosen to exhibit their work at the 

Mall Galleries in London where 

Louise was spotted by Osborne 

and Little, an upmarket fabric and 

wallpaper manufacturer. She was 

offered a job at their London office 

after she finished her degree. 

Caroline was then spotted at 

the New Designers Graduate Show 

by fabric designer, Gill Nono. She 

moved to Manchester to become 

Gill’s right-hand woman doing a 

variety of jobs from shoot styling to 

going to European trade shows. 

After just a couple of years 

cutting her teeth in design, Caroline 

went out on a whim and applied for 

a senior designer role at Next Home 

which she says was well above her 

station. But the hiring team were 

impressed by her work and offered 

her a trainee position instead. 

She quickly progressed to 

become head of downstairs textiles, 

responsible for designing multimillion-pound 

ranges of cushions, 

throws, curtains and rugs. She was 

then headhunted to work for George 

at Asda to design, develop and 

produce ranges for all homewares. 

At the other end of the country, 

Louise had built up her credibility 

for producing innovative and trend 

driven designs and had become 

the main designer for Harlequin, 

part of the Sanderson Group, 

where she stayed for over 20 

years. She oversaw the design and 

manufacturing processes on various 

campaigns for Anthology, Scion 

and Zoffany. 

“My collections have been 

shown in national magazines but I’m 

most proud when I see them in real 

homes as it means someone chose 

my design because they loved 

them. I once went to the spa at 

Centre Parcs and all the voiles and 

wallpaper were what I’d designed. It 

was a woodland collection with pine 

cones and it looked bloody great in 

that setting. That was pretty cool to 

see,” Louise says. 

“I remember my husband 

taking me to this posh Michelin 

star restaurant for a treat and it was 

full of Lou’s stuff. I sent her more 

photos of cushions than I did the 

actual food we had,” Caroline adds. 

The dream had always been to 

one day work together. But it came 

to fruition in 2019 after both sisters 

had been made redundant. Caroline 

also had a period of ill health which 

she says changed her desire and 

ability and was keen to find a new 

direction. 

Just as before, family would 

prove to be the bigger picture. 

When redecorating her young 

son’s bedroom, Caroline was 

struggling to find any artwork she 

liked. She started to sketch some 

of her own work and created a 

giraffe in collage. Louise could see 

the commercial potential and they 

decided to approach Yorkshire 

Wildlife Park about stocking a range 

of animal artwork.

“The pieces were bright, 

colourful, and really quite different 

from anything else they stocked so I 

don’t think they could really say no. 

They asked if we could draw their 

animals and it led to us being Artists 

in Residence there,” Louise says. 

“I’d go there every Saturday to 

draw their most popular animals 

and would get chatting to the 

visitors around the park. I think 

it helped people relate to what 

they were buying as they could 

see us crafting it from scratch,” 

adds Caroline. 

They have a large display in 

the shop at the wildlife park and 

have since built a portfolio of other 

collections based on nature and 

animals inspired by everything from 

the woodland to the rainforest. They 

also offer commissions for people 

looking for personalised art, with 

Caroline using her digital skills 

to recreate family or pet photos 

in the signature Wilson Design 

Collective style.

Herbal remedies 

for stress

this is via medication prescribed by your GP, 

such as antidepressants or sleeping pills. 

But there are also some herbal remedies that 

are reported to have calming properties which 

help you relax. Most are available in capsule 

or tea form; always consult the information for 

correct dosage. 


As with any medicines, there may be 

some side effects. Always consult your GP or 

pharmacist before taking herbal remedies as 

they can interfere with other medication including 

anaesthetic. Herbal supplements should not be 

taken by pregnant or breast-feeding women as 

there haven’t been enough research tests on this 

demographic. 

St John’s Wort 

This bright yellow plant been used for nerve 

disorders since the Ancient Greeks over 2,000 

years ago. It contains hypericin which has a 

powerful effect on the brain, increasing serotonin 

and dopamine levels which can improve low 

mood. St John’s Wort can increase your skin 

sensitivity to the sun if you have fair skin, so extra 

caution should be given. 

Valerian 

Advocated as a sleep aid since Greek 

physicians Hippocrates and Galen, Valerian was 

also used to relieve stress during the WWII air 

raids. It calms the nervous system and relaxes 

the brain in a similar way to sedatives. Valerian 

can reduce muscle tension, trembling and 

insomnia. It can cause drowsiness so avoid 

taking before driving or other instances where 

you need to stay alert. 

Passionflower 

Similar to Valerian, this herb has a calming 

effect which can be beneficial for people who 

have anxiety or insomnia. It is also thought 

passionflower can help reduce symptoms of the 

menopause such as hot flushes. 

Ashwagandha 

This herb has long been used in Indian 

medicine but has become increasingly popular 

in western homeopathy. It is an adaptogen, plant 

substances that are believed to regulate the 

body’s stress response and restore homeostasis. 

It can help with mood swings, concentration 

and sleep. 

Rhodiola 

This is another adaptogen that helps reduce 

stress. It is also used to help people experiencing 

fatigue, exhaustion or burnout. 

Lemon balm 

While it’s named after the aroma of the leaves, 

lemon balm is actually part of the mint family. It 

is thought to promote calmness and maintain a 

positive mood. 

Lavender 

The most commonly thought of herb for 

relaxation, lavender is traditionally used in 

essential oils and aromatherapy. It reduces 

cortisol and tension in the body without the use 

of a sedative. Using a lavender pillow spray or 

diffuser at night may help improve sleep quality. 

Chamomile 

Another well-known relaxing herb, chamomile 

is mainly taken in tea form. It contains apigenin 

which has similar properties to benzodiazepines 

tranquilizers. Chamomile can improve sleep, relax 

muscles and reduce blood pressure.

Long hair DO care

Our last article in Aroundtown 

was all about going shorter as the 

trend for above-shoulder haircuts 

continues to grow. 

However, many people want to hold on to 

longer locks, especially as the year moves forward; 

we start to think of warmer days and longer hair 

flowing in the spring breeze. 

There are lots of long layered trends that have 

sprung up with names like the ‘Wolf’ cut and 

‘Butterfly’ cut - there’s even an ‘Octopus’ cut! 

Some trends have simpler names like the V or 

C cut. 

But don’t let the name worry you. For those of 

us who are a certain age, think ‘the Rachel’ cut 

from the ‘90s. 

If longer hair is part of your plan for 2023 then 

there are some things you should know. 

Firstly, just because you aim to grow your hair 

longer doesn’t mean you should stop having it cut! 

Talk to your hairdresser and tell them your plans. 

Not all hairdressers are obsessed with cutting all 

your hair off. Hair grows about 1- 1.5cm per month 

(or half an inch in old money) so have less than 

this cut off every six to eight weeks and your hair 

will grow quicker. 

If you decide not to bother with a cut, then 

as your hair grows longer, rubs on collars and 

shoulders, gets blow-dried and brushed, it will start 

to splinter and split. Soon the breakage will start 

to take away whatever hair has grown. In other 

words, you’re taking two steps forward and three 

steps back. 

Everyone’s hair grows differently. Each 

individual hair on your head has a lifespan of 

between two and seven years, after which it stops 

growing, lies dormant and eventually falls out, 

being replaced by a new hair. It’s quite normal to 

lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day, most of 

which end up in your vacuum cleaner, hair brush

Remember, hair is an organic substance and 

with all organic things, the closer it gets to the end 

of its lifespan the weaker, more fragile it becomes. 

Having it cut regularly will keep the hair healthy and

Hair care tips for happy,

• Have your hair cut at least every eight weeks. 

It will have grown an inch by then, so having a

We’ve all tried to 

squeeze that last drop 

out of our favourite 

bottle of foundation 

or used every last 

millimetre of our most

Whether it’s because we’re too 

disorganised to replenish our 

make-up stocks in good time or 

we’re just a bit on the thrifty side, 

there are some handy tried and 

tested tips to help make our beauty 

supplies go further. 

Use hot water 

If mascara is starting to run out, 

secure the cap and place it into a 

bowl of warm water for a couple 

of minutes. The heat softens the 

dry mascara making it coat the 

brush again. This trick also works 

for refreshing nail varnish that has 

gone gloopy or has a lid that has 

stiffened up. 

Store make-up 

wisely 

Eye and lip pencils need to be kept 

in a cool, dry place as they may 

melt in warm locations. Nail polish, 

lipstick and perfume could also see 

their shelf life shortened by warm air 

so stash them in the fridge with the 

lids tightly fastened. 

Be versatile 

The lifespan of an expensive 

foundation can be extended by 

mixing in a drop or two of face lotion 

or alcohol-free toner. It will become 

more of a tinted moisturiser but still 

give reasonable coverage and feel 

lighter for the warmer months. 

Keep everything 

clean 

Cleaning make-up brushes 

regularly, at least monthly, will 

extend their life. Rub through the 

bristles with a soft, conditioning 

baby shampoo or dish detergent 

and olive oil. A fine brush and 

rubbing alcohol can also be used 

gently to clean remaining mascara, 

shadow and glue from fake eye 

lashes, allowing them to be reused. 

Waste not want not 

To refresh powdered make-up 

products, lightly press packaging 

tape against it to remove the 

strange, hard film that can develop 

on top. Crushed or crumbled 

powder, such as blushers, 

foundations or eye shadows, can be 

preserved by pressing a few drops 

of rubbing alcohol into them. 

So, give these tips a try to revitalise 

your make-up bag and save a few 

pounds until you really do want to

Spring allergies 

Spring means flower buds and 

trees blooming. If you suffer 

from seasonal allergies, often 

known as hay fever, you might 

find yourself feeling congested 

and miserable. 

Symptoms can last for months and often 

include sneezing and coughing; a runny and 

blocked nose; itchy red or watery eyes or an itchy 

throat, nose and mouth. Other symptoms might 

resemble feeling run down with a headache, 

pain around the temples or feeling tired. There 

is no cure for hay fever, and you cannot prevent 

it. But you can ease symptoms by making 

conscious decisions as well as taking over the 

counter medication. 

Symptoms can be relieved by an oral 

antihistamine, nasal spray and eyedrops. 

Professionals suggest all assisted medication is 

to be taken first thing in the morning before going

A good strategy when going outdoors is 

to limit your encounter with pollen. Wearing 

sunglasses can often stop your eyes watering 

while also reducing itchiness. If you have long 

hair, you might find tying it up or wearing a hat 

stops pollen lingering and wafting against your 

face. Before heading outdoors, spread a bit of 

Vaseline on the inside of your nose and this will 

act as a trap for some pollen particles. 

While hay fever symptoms are worse 

outdoors, there’s no miracle product than can 

eliminate all allergens from the air in your home. 

Closing windows and doors prevents pollen 

from blowing in. Regularly vacuuming removes 

dust and allergens embedded in your carpets 

and upholstery. Cleaning can throw dust and 

allergens into the air, spreading pollen particles 

further. To prevent allergens from spreading use 

a damp cloth when cleaning and wear rubber 

gloves to stop them from landing on your hands 

and arms. 

If you have been outdoors, you may find it 

useful to shower when returning or changing 

into a fresh pair of clothes as this will remove all 

pollen particles from your face, hands and hair. 

For many people, avoiding allergens and taking 

non-prescription medication is enough to ease 

symptoms allowing you to enjoy the outdoors 

this spring.

MANvFAT football is an 

innovative and popular 

approach for encouraging 

overweight men to improve 

their health and well-being, 

where it’s not just scoring on 

the pitch that gets results. 

It’s open to men aged 18 or over who have 

a BMI of 27.5 or higher and are looking to lose 

weight. New members are assigned to teams, 

and all skill and fitness levels encouraged, even 

if you have not kicked a ball in years, as the 

emphasis is on being part of an encouraging, 

supportive network. 

“We’re here to support all players to achieve 

a healthier lifestyle whilst having a laugh and 

enjoying the beautiful game. You’re not on your 

own - it’s an inclusive community with a team 

spirit, all reaching for a common goal on and off 

the pitch,” says Rotherham coach, Colan Leung. 

Before each weekly match, players are 

weighed and submit their fitness and dietary 

progress to the coaches. Using an app, like 

MyFitnessPal, is the modern way of doing this, 

but keeping a paper journal is just as effective. 

The matches are seven-a-side played on 

3G/4G pitches with roll-on/roll-off subs for up 

to 11 players per squad. Played in a friendly, 

competitive spirit, the games consist of two 

14-minute halves refereed by qualified officials. 

While each team is eager to succeed on the 

pitch, opposition teams are regarded as kindred 

spirits. There is respect and understanding for the 

club’s ethos to achieve a common goal, and as a 

result the games are played with a great deal of 

encouragement and banter. 

Where else could you find fixtures like 

Porkvale V Mighty Pudding, and AFC Satsuma 

V Fatalanta? Everyone embraces and 

acknowledges the challenge, knowing they are 

working hard towards a happier, healthier self. 

In addition to the match results, bonus goals 

are given for health and fitness gains of each 

person on the team. Teams could get up to five 

additional goals based on how many players in 

the team lose weight that week, one goal for any 

player losing weight for three consecutive weeks, 

and three goals for any player achieving a five or 

ten percent weight loss milestone. 

If a player is injured, they can still help their 

team gain bonus goals by attending the weigh-in. 

After all the stats are gathered and calculated, the 

final score for each match can be determined. 

While many are tucking into a biriyani and 

a bottle of wine at the end of the week, the 

MANvFAT matches are kicking off under the hazy 

floodlights of Parkgate Astro, Rotherham. On a 

fresh Friday evening in February, Fatburn Rovers 

defeated Borussia Doughnuts 1-0 in an exciting 

end-to-end match. But after calculating each 

team’s bonus goals, the final score was Fatburn 

Rovers 7-5 Borussia Doughnuts. 

Player/manager of Fatburn Rovers, Chris 

Valentine, is one of the thousands of MANvFAT 

success stories nationwide. 

“Before joining, I’d reached 24 stone and 

would get out of breath taking a walk or getting in 

the car. MANvFAT gave me the shove I needed 

and has become an integral part of my life for the 

last six years,” Chris says. 

Having since shed more than half his body 

weight, Chris adds: “My top tip is to attach a 

picture of your family on the food cupboards. 

Every time I went for a snack, I saw them first and 

reconsidered.” 

Around 90 percent of players become 

healthier and fitter after just 14 weeks. A 

large part of MANvFAT’s success is down to 

encouraging social interaction—something 

women do brilliantly, yet men traditionally find 

harder. It is incredibly refreshing to hear men 

share fitness and healthy eating tips and open up 

about their weight control challenges. 

Throughout the week, daily wins, empowering 

stories, and wholesome recipes are shared via 

Facebook and WhatsApp groups. Members also

really want require us to step outside of our 

comfort zone. MANvFAT is a great way to do this 

socially as well as physically in order to achieve 

a collective goal in becoming a better version of 

ourselves,” says Sheffield coach, Tom Crothers.

MANvFAT football has expanded since it 

launched in 2016. There are now over 170 

FA-affiliated MANvFAT clubs across the UK with 

a new club launching in Barnsley on Tuesday 

14th March.

Camellia House renovation brings 

to Wentworth Woodhouse 

They say that, just as with tea, 

the strength of something is 

only drawn out in hot water. And 

nothing truer could be said for 

the 200-year-old camellias at 

Wentworth Woodhouse. 

These ancient plants dating back to the 1820s 

have bloomed in adversity while the walls of the 

Camellia House have crumbled around them. 

But the camellias are set to take centre 

stage again thanks to the meticulous 

management of the gardening volunteers at 

Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust – 

and a painstaking £5 million restoration of their 

historic home. 

This summer, the Trust will open the doors 

of a new teahouse in the Georgian Camellia 

House for visitors to take tea in the grounds of 

Wentworth Woodhouse. A tea menu will embrace 

tea-drinking ceremonies and cultures from across 

the globe, with a host of tea-themed community 

events and project also planned around the 

building’s history. 

Parts of the Camellia House date back to 

1730 when Lady Rockingham had a teahouse 

built overlooking her husband’s menagerie of 

exotic animals in which to entertain her female 

guests and show off her prized tea caddy. No 

kitchen these days would be without a canister of 

teabags, but back then it was a rare commodity 

that signalled wealth and would have been kept 

under lock and key by the lady of the house. 

Similarly, camellias were prestigious plants 

reserved only for the wealthy in Georgian Britain. 

The glass-fronted part of the Camellia House was 

built in 1812 to show off the 2nd Marquess of 

Rockingham’s camellia collection he’d imported 

from the Far East via the East India Co.

including Camellia sinensis the plant from which 

tea is made. So it is fitting that it was ships plying 

the company’s tea trade that brought the plants 

back to Britain. 

Hailing from warmer climates, it was once 

wildly believed that camellias were too delicate 

to be grown outside without protection of a glass 

roof. But those at Wentworth Woodhouse have 

defied those thoughts. After the Fitzwilliams 

vacated the mansion, the Camellia House 

became ruinous and was severely impacted by 

the open cast mining happening close by. 

When the Trust took over the mansion 

and grounds in 2017, the roofless Grade II* 

Listed Camellia House was on the Heritage At 

Risk Register. However, open to the Yorkshire

elements, the long-forgotten camellias 

had flourished. 

After clearing away the brambles that had 

enveloped the building, head gardener, Scott 

Jamieson, discovered what he dubbed the 

horticultural equivalent of finding a library of 

first edition books. Their rarity and age were 

confirmed with the help of the International 

Camellia Society and Chiswick House in London, 

which has its own internationally renowned 

collection of camellias from the early 1800s. 

Many of the 19 plants at Wentworth 

Woodhouse have been identified as dating back 

to the 1820s-30s, making them some of the 

oldest in the western world. 

The Trust had a vision to bring the Camellia 

House back into the visitor attraction through 

its gargantuan masterplan. Structural work on 

the Camellia House began in September, with 

conservation architects, Donald Insall Associates 

taking on the complex project alongside 

York-based construction company William Birch 

& Sons Ltd. 

Throughout the ongoing restoration of the 

Camellia House, the plants have been heavily 

protected. Timber frames were created to 

encase the beds which were then covered in 

plastic sheeting to prevent lime plaster dust 

contaminating the soil. A crash deck was installed 

at roof level to prevent debris falling on the plants, 

with light tunnels to allow natural light to reach 

the plants. 

With the roof having shattered, some of the 

plants had grown taller than the building. But 

Scott and the garden volunteers have spent the 

last five years pruning, feeding, mulching and 

weeding which has resulted in significant levels 

of growth lower down on the trunks of the plants. 

They now look more like shrubs rather than 

leggy trees. 

Cuttings were also taken from the plants that 

have been cared for at Chiswick House before 

being returned to Wentworth Woodhouse as 

strong healthy plants. 

Protecting the camellias has been just one 

piece of the puzzle. The building had its own 

issues that the project team have had to contend 

with. Extensive damage had been caused to the 

brickwork by rain and invasive weeds. The roof 

timbers were completely rotten and the cast iron 

trusses, weighing 200kg each, were unsafe to 

walk beneath. 

These were carefully removed and sent to 

Hull-based steel fabricators Barker and Patterson 

to be repaired, shot-blasted and undercoated. 

They were found to have originally been off-white 

in colour so have been repainted to mirror this. 

A new glass and zinc roof was winched onto the 

trusses in February. 

The building, which had no water or electricity 

supply, was found to be leaning forward 20cms 

due to subsidence. This meant the surveyors’ 

drawings had to be within millimetre precision to 

ensure all restored pieces of the Camellia House 

would fit back together again. 

Every single pane of glass on the nine bays 

of sash windows had to be drawn to scale. A 

laser scan of the internal space created a 3D 

street view style image which helped with the 

planning of the new-look teahouse. The project 

management team worked with everyone 

from ecologists and archaeologists to kitchen 

designers and plaster specialists to find out how 

best to plan and devise the space. 

A building to service the kitchens has been 

built, along with a Changing Places toilet which 

will be equipped with hoists and adult changing 

benches to ensure Wentworth Woodhouse is 

more accessible for severely disabled people. 

During the project, great care has been taken 

to repair as many existing elements as possible 

of the Camellia House or replace like-for-like if 

not. Parts of the surviving wooden panelling, 

fireplace and original timber roof structure at Lady 

Rockingham’s teahouse have been repaired 

and incorporated into the new design. Under 

the rubble, the teahouse floor was found to have 

been a black and white diamond pattern, with this 

Trusses being repaired in Hull 

also set to be replicated. 

Architects’ drawings from 1812 show the 

Camellia House adorned with statues above a 

balustraded parapet. The statues have long-since 

disappeared and there are plans to replace them 

if additional funding can be found. 

Original technologies have also been 

repurposed for the modern age. The Camellia 

House was once heated by a coal-fired, 

underfloor hypocaust system. Now, groundsource 

heat pumps, which are energy-efficient 

and have a low environmental impact, will heat 

the building. Lead pipes and troughs which were 

used to catch rain for watering the plants have 

been replaced by modern rainwater-harvesting 

tanks. 

The camellias have survived for decades 

without a roof, so extra consideration has been 

made into managing the heat and humidity of 

the Camellia House. It will be naturally ventilated 

via the windows and the gardening team have 

undergone training on how best to manage 

the environment. 

The building’s restoration and repurposing is 

thanks to a number of grants, including £4m from 

The National Lottery Heritage Fund, £250,000 

from Historic England and £364,622 from The 

Hamish Ogston Foundation, via Historic England. 

Once it opens this summer, the new Camellia 

House will create up to 22 jobs and double up as 

an evening events space.

They decided to add some 

wild bird seed to the stall and it 

took off, so they expanded further 

and opened the adjoining unit to 

provide pet supplies, something 

the market didn’t already offer. 

They stock a range of dried food 

for small animals, treats for cats 

and dogs, bedding and straw, as 

well as leads, collars and toys. 

Joanne has since moved the 

fruit and veg stall to the corner 

unit opposite the entrance. With 

the rising cost of fresh produce, 

Kemps try to keep prices as low 

as possible and also stand on the 

Tuesday street market where they 

sell produce for just £1.

them, offering everything 

from shoes and clothing to 

personalised workwear. 

Terry first started as a market 

trader 40 years ago when he 

decided he wanted to run his 

own business, and Rotherham 

Market was the place for him 

with cheap premises and an 

easy start-up process. He initially 

opened Pandora’s Box, in what is 

now the newspaper kiosk, where 

he sold pop music merchandise

Husband and wife Robert and 

Julie run a stall selling a wide 

range of household goods. 

Robert initially had a stall on 

the outdoor market for 18 months 

selling electricals, towels and 

bedding. When a stall became 

vacant on the indoor market, they 

moved in there and have since 

expanded their offer to include 

such as posters and badges. He 

then took on a stall outside selling 

sportswear and footwear and, as 

trade improved, he moved inside 

to a bigger unit. 

Son Antony came on board 

20 years ago while he was still 

at school to earn some pocket 

money. This quickly developed 

into a partnership that enabled the 

business to expand into printing 

services and they introduced 

embroidery six years ago after 

investing in new technology. They 

can personalise everything from 

mugs and soft toys to workwear 

and football kits. Their other stalls 

also sell quality shoes for men, 

women and children, work boots, 

sports clothing and tracksuits.

are well known brands but at

Ann and her husband William

hampers and chocolate

comes to Barnsley 

He was the first British artist 

to become a global star in his 

lifetime. And now the iconic 

work of Henry Moore has 

arrived in Barnsley. 

On until Saturday 3rd June, the Cooper Gallery 

will host Henry Moore: Threads of Influence, a 

touring exhibition from the Sainsbury Centre. 

The exhibition focuses on Moore’s long and 

productive career, from his early life drawings 

to his renowned sculptures and later prints. 

There will also be a range of related objects from 

the Cooper Gallery Collection, including two 

figurative drawings.

British artists of the 20th Century and Barnsley 

Museums is proud to be bringing works from an 

artist of this calibre to the town. The exhibition 

will illuminate Moore’s work in a new way, giving 

visitors an insight into his many influences that 

helped him develop his multi-faceted portfolio. 

Moore has strong links to Yorkshire, having 

been born in Castleford in 1898. He knew he 

wanted to be a sculptor from a young age and 

studied at Leeds School of Art after the First 

World War. 

He then trained at the Royal College of Art 

in London where he met his wife, Irina. She was 

one of his first muses and there will be two life 

drawings of Irina on display at Cooper Gallery. 

These early sketches show his commitment 

to studying the human form which laid the 

foundations of his monumental bronze sculptures. 

By the 1930s, Moore was one of Europe’s 

leading avant-garde sculptors. The exhibition will 

include small-scale examples of his work which 

highlight how he was able to conceive his ideas 

before he had the means to achieve the vast 

three-dimensional works. 

There will also be four of his Shelter Drawings 

from his time as an official war artist during 

the Second World War. Moore studied people 

sheltering in the London Underground during the 

Blitz and these pieces were shown at the National 

Gallery during the war. 

The exhibition also explores other artists who 

influenced Moore’s work over the years such as 

Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Jacob Epstein. 

Barnsley is the final stop on the tour, with the 

exhibition having already been to Tunbridge Wells, 

Ayr, and Derby.

YOU WILL NEED: 

2 x 300gm white card 

Patterned paper 

Easter cut outs and flowers 

Strong glue or tape 

Acetate 

Ruler, scissors, scoring tool, 

pencil & rubber 

Corner rounder punch 

METHOD: 

To make your 3D envelope, 

start by marking the centre point 

horizontally and vertically on an A4 

sheet of card. Draw two faint lines. 

(Sheet 1) 

On another sheet draw a 9cm 

square and cut out. (Sheet 2) 

Place the square in the centre 

of Sheet 1 diagonally, making sure 

each corner point is in line with 

your pencil lines on Sheet 1. Draw 

around the shape. 

Remove Sheet 2 and measure 

2cm around all sides on Sheet 1 

and draw in these lines. 

To make the flaps, find the 

centre point of each side and 

place a pencil dot 6cm out from 

each side. 

Use a ruler to draw from the 

centre point to each corner of the 

original square. 

On the top right-hand flap, only 

rub out the 2cm pencil line. This 

will create the back piece. 

Cut around all outside lines. 

Score all the other lines on the 

other three sides. 

Snip the bottom left and right 

small square at the side of the flap 

only to make a tab. 

Fold on all score lines. Corner 

round the flaps. You should now 

have a box envelope shape. 

Decorate with patterned paper 

before sticking together. 

Cut a strip of card 10cm x 

1cm. Score at 0.5cm from each 

side. Glue inside the top of your 

envelope to create a bar. 

Decorate with flowers and 

Easter embellishments. Use strips 

of acetate secured to the bar 

to give height to some of your 

decorations. Finish with a ‘Happy 

Easter’ sign. 

Your 3D Easter card is now 

complete.

festival for young people 

This April, Rotherham town 

centre will once again be 

transformed into an urban 

playground as UPLIFT 

Rotherham Skate & Art 

Festival returns for 2023. 

Following the success of last year’s inaugural 

festival, UPLIFT is back with a new Easter slot 

with three days of free skating activities, live 

music and art workshops taking place from 

Wednesday 5th until Friday 7th April. 

Get ready for plenty of bunny hopping 

with BMX and skateboarding demos from 

professionals including Skateboard GB National 

Team member, Alex deCunha. There will also be 

a chance to hit the ramps yourself in the pop-up 

skating arenas. 

This year there will be two arenas so everyone 

can show off their stunts regardless of age 

or experience. As well as the main arena in 

Effingham Square for teenagers and Tony Hawke 

wannabes, there will also be one next to All 

Saints’ Square more suitable for younger children 

and beginners. 

Another new addition for 2023 is the rollerskating 

zone in All Saints’ Square with a roller 

disco taking place, too. 

Why not flex your creative muscles and 

show off your inner Banksy with the drop-in art 

workshops hosted by Flux Rotherham along 

Effingham Street. 

Marvel at circus dance company Ockham’s 

Razor as they move with the architecture of the

time, or even if they are a seasoned seller

Rotherham BMX track 

takes it up a gear 

With urban roots, BMX 

racing has gone from 

the skatepark to the 

Olympic arena in recent 

years, fuelling the 

popularity amongst the 

younger generation. 

For those looking to hone their 

skills on two wheels, Rotherham 

BMX Club provides first-class 

coaching on a competition-standard 

track. 

Based in Kimberworth, the 

volunteer-run club has been a 

lifeline for the cycling community 

for over 20 years. During that time, 

their riders have made podiums at 

national and international races. 

Around 20 riders who have 

trained at the club have ranked in 

the top eight in the UK at National 

and British championships. Another 

five riders have been part of the 

Olympic development team, 

including three-times Team GB 

BMX racer Liam Phillips and World 

BMX Championship gold medallist 

Shanaze Reade. 

The BMX track was first opened 

in 2001 as the brainchild of Keppel 

ward councillor, Carole Foster, 

when her son showed an interest in 

the sport. She put in various bids to 

raise £30,000 to build a track that 

would benefit the wider community. 

An old engine pond in Kimberworth 

was leased to the club on a 

peppercorn rent. 

After a bit of a bumpy ride over 

the last ten years, the track wanted 

updating. The surface needed 

improving, layout refining and 

more challenging features adding 

to enable the track to be used for 

regional and national competitions. 

Plans were put in place 

throughout the pandemic, with 

Carole and the team of volunteers 

fundraising and applying for grants 

to raise £200,000 to overhaul the 

track. Work was finally completed 

last summer. The new-look track, 

which has an electric start gate, 

tarmac areas, and dirt jumps, now 

attracts BMX riders from across 

South Yorkshire who train weekly 

and regularly compete. 

All their coaches are experienced 

riders: Melissa was ranked second 

in the country as a teenager; Chris 

is a former Steel City downhill 

champ; and Waller is a street 

BMXer who also runs his own BMX 

supplies shop. 

Thanks to funding, Rotherham 

BMX Club offers free coached 

sessions for children and young 

people living in Rotherham who are 

aged between ten and 18. If your 

child has shown an interest in the 

sport, or you’d like for them to try 

something new, spring is the perfect 

time to start. 

Parents with children who have 

grown up around technology and 

devices will know how hard it can be 

to get kids to spend time outdoors 

engaging in physical activity. 

But the thrills and adrenaline of 

BMX racing and cycling means 

kids tend to stick it out and keep 

challenging themselves. Traditional 

team sports aren’t for everyone, 

but BMX encourages cohesion 

and a community feel, with riders 

stoked to meet others with a similar 

mindset no matter their background. 

The sport also teaches children 

and young people many essential 

life skills such as communication, 

perseverance, discipline, and 

determination. They learn how to 

stay focused, how to deal with 

failing, and how to get up and try 

again until they succeed. 

Whether it’s learning to ride 

without stabilisers, or landing 

their first big jump, each new skill 

unlocked is another notch in their 

self-confidence. Parents might worry 

about their kids getting injured, 

but BMX racers quickly learn how 

to take more calculated and safer 

risks.

Old school football 

at its best 

2017 Carrfield 

As the region’s oldest primary 

school football competition, 

the Totty Cup celebrates its 

centenary this year. 

Over the last 100 years, thousands of 

schoolboys from across the Don and Dearne 

region have laced up their boost to play for the 

coveted schools’ trophy – or one of them, at 

least; there have been two replacements since 

the original went missing in 1977. 

Goldthorpe cinema manager Russell Totty 

bequeathed the first cup in 1923. But little did he 

know the silverware he donated would go on to 

create a legacy worthy of the silver screen. 

The cup was initially a knockout style 

competition for by 13- and 14-year-old 

schoolboys, but it is now played for by primary 

schools in Brampton, Darfield, Dearne, Kilnhurst, 

Mexborough, Rawmarsh, Swinton, and Wath. 

A Wath derby in 1923 saw Victoria trounce 

Park Road 2-0 to become the inaugural winners, 

with goal scorer Albert Parkin going on to sign for 

Rotherham United aged 17. 

Many other past Totty finalists have gone 

on to net goals in the football league, the most 

famous being George Robledo who went on 

to win the FA Cup with Newcastle United in 

1952. His footballing talent was first spotted 

some 13 years earlier when he was a young 

lad at Brampton Ellis School, scoring ten goals 

collectively in both the 1939 and 1940 Totty Cup 

finals. 

After the Second World War, two local 

football associations merged to become the 

Don & Dearne Schools FA. Their well-respected 

representative team became like an academy for 

clubs like Sheffield United and Wolverhampton 

Wanderers between the 1950s and ‘70s. 

Only a handful of finals have been missed in 

its 100-year history, owing to nationwide issues

like the war years, the 1986 teachers’ strike, and 

the Covid pandemic. 

As time has passed, the cup has evolved 

to also incorporate other competitions to those 

teams who don’t make it through to the final. The 

Barlow-Salmons Shield was introduced in 1974 

for schools knocked out in the quarter finals. 

Frank Barlow and Geoff Salmons were Don & 

Dearne SFA schoolboys who were spotted by 

Sheffield United. 

For the centenary, two new trophies have 

been commissioned in honour of Totty Cup 

officials, Brian ‘Boe’ Hyde and Gordon Swann, 

who gave their time for free for many finals in the 

1990s and 2000s. 

Schools who didn’t make the Totty Cup 

knockout stages will compete for the Brian Hyde 

cup. Sandhill and Thorogate the two semi-finalists 

that didn’t make the Totty Cup final, will compete 

in a new bronze medal play-off called the Gordon 

Swann Cup. Both trophies have been lovingly 

restored by local silversmith, Bob Lamb. 

The centenary final will be played at 3.45pm 

on Thursday 23rd March at Goldthorpe Welfare, 

taking the cup back to its Goldthorpe roots for 

this momentous occasion. Reigning champions 

Swinton Queen will take on Goldthorpe Sacred 

Heart to take home to Totty Cup in its momentous 

year. 

To mark the centenary, the Totty Cup’s long 

history is being collated into an A4 book by 

established football author, Steve Penny, helped 

by the research of Totty Cup volunteer, Chris 

Brook. 

It will be published in December but those 

who pre-order copy before 30th September can 

get it for the reduced price of £10. They will also 

have their name printed in the book. There is also 

a commemorative pin badge priced £3. Both are 

available from Pettits Shoes in Mexborough. All 

proceeds will go to the Don & Dearne Schools 

Sports Association.

returns for 2023 

The annual Rotherham 10k 

road race event is back 

this spring, taking place on 

Sunday 14th May. 

The popular event will once

on your waders and cast your line with More Hall 

Fly Fishing Club. 

Based in the stunning Ewden 

Valley between Stocksbridge and 

Bolsterstone, the club was started 

in 2000 by fishing enthusiasts to 

preserve the More Hall Reservoir 

and promote fly fishing as an active 

sport. 

The reservoir is serene and 

peaceful, where members can 

absorb themselves in the natural 

environment. You can fish anywhere 

permitted by the club and Yorkshire 

Water, with many members wading 

out into the reservoir to cast their 

line rather than sitting on the bank 

waiting hours for the fish to bite. 

Unlike coarse or carp fishing, 

fly fishing uses an artificial fly rather 

than worms and maggots so you 

don’t need lots of heavy kit or a 

huge tackle box. 

If you’re new to fly fishing and 

want to test the waters before 

committing to joining, the club has 

a limited amount of equipment for 

the members to take you through 

your paces to see if fly fishing is 

for you. Their friendly committee 

are usually around to offer advice, 

with many experienced fly fishers 

like secretary, David Atkinson, 

who has spent over 40 years

Celebrating 20 years of 

RSPB Old Moor 

As part of South Yorkshire’s 

biggest nature hotspot, RSPB 

Old Moor has been attracting 

hundreds of thousands of 

visitors a year for the last two 

decades. 

Avid birdwatchers flock in their droves to see 

some of the most rare and elusive birds that have 

made RSPB Old Moor their home. Families and 

schools come to learn about the biodiversity of 

the nature reserve. Children love to grab their 

nets and go pond dipping, keeping an eye out 

for dragonflies landing on the water. And many 

a muddy boot has enjoyed idyllic walks around 

the site. 

So, it’s hard to imagine this wildlife haven 

was amongst the most heavily polluted areas in 

western Europe that locals dubbed Hell’s Kitchen 

due to the regular outbreak of fires caused by 

coal mining and coking. 

Situated between Wombwell and Wath-upon- 

Dearne, this part of the Dearne Valley was an 

industrial landscape, the skyline dominated by 

the towering pit shafts at Manvers Main and Wath 

Main collieries. After the pits closed in the mid- 

80s, the area became derelict, the ground full of 

pollution. 

A manmade wetland was created by Barnsley 

Council in the late 1990s as part of the Dearne 

Valley regeneration scheme and the RSPB took 

over the site in 2003. There are lakes, ponds, 

wildflower meadows and wet grasslands. 

Over the last twenty years, the site has 

flourished and wildlife has begun to thrive. 

By giving nature a home in the Dearne Valley, 

RSPB Old Moor has seen breeding successes 

from some bird species that could have been 

counted on just two hands throughout the UK at 

the time of the pit closures. It has also recently 

been designated a Site of Special Scientific 

Interest (SSSI) status by Natural England for its 

bird conservation which will ensure the national 

importance of the site. 

But nature hasn’t just taken over and made 

itself at home. It has had a helping hand along 

the way from visionaries who were keen to

protect the area from developers. A dedicated 

team of professionals and scores of volunteers 

have made a huge difference to their local 

environment. 

The team has devised strategic water 

management systems that are a far cry from the 

nearby river systems that were once biologically 

dead due to the amount of mercury that was 

discharged into the water from the pits. Water 

levels are constantly monitored and can be 

lowered in spring to create more muddy areas for 

wader chicks or raised in winter for wildfowl. 

It was RSPB’s idea to add reed beds to help 

the struggling bittern population. A member of 

the heron family, visitors can now have sporadic 

sightings of this rare bird – or at least hear its far 

carrying boom from deep in the reeds. Fish and 

eel stocks have been introduced to create the 

perfect habitat for a biodiverse range of wildlife. 

Whatever time of year you visit, there will 

always be something exciting to see. Take one of 

the many trails around the nature reserve to see 

what you discover. There are plenty of hides and 

viewing screens along the trails, so don’t forget 

your binoculars. 

In spring, you might see great crested grebes 

performing their courtship dance, the sound 

of Warblers establishing territories along the 

pathways and stoats and brown hares zipping 

in and out from the undergrowth. As summer 

arrives, look out for the elegant avocets sweeping 

their bills through the water, lapwing chicks 

exploring the pool edges and butterflies landing

coloured affluent 

on the many marsh orchids in the wildflower 

meadow. 

As global warming takes a hold, some birds 

now choose to over winter in the Dearne Valley 

rather than migrating further south. In the future, it 

is very likely that birds that would normally breed 

in mainland Europe will be breeding right here in 

the Dearne Valley. 

RSPB Old Moor is perfect for families 

looking to get out and explore nature. There is 

a year-round calendar of family events to get 

you closer to nature, seasonal activities that 

include discovery backpacks, fun trails and even 

pond dipping. The wild play areas are a treat 

to explore, getting you immersed in the special 

habitats at RSPB Old Moor. There is also a new 

mini beast garden currently being created for little 

explorers to search for creepy crawlies.

anniversary, the RSPB 

Old Moor team has 

organised a programme 

of community events this 

springtime. 

On Sunday 2nd April, there will be a 

heritage event called Birds, Brass and 

Barnsley Tails where brass bands will be 

performing and the activities team will be 

sharing stories about the site’s history. 

Then throughout the Easter holidays, 

there will be the RSPB Dearne Valley 

Exhibition which gives visitors an insight 

into the timeline of Old Moor throughout 

the centuries, with details about how it 

was used in Tudor times, during the war, 

and how it has evolved since becoming a 

nature reserve. 

These events are included in entry 

price which is £5 for adults and £2.50 for 

children over five. RSPB members, carers 

and kids under five go free. If you’re a 

National Lottery player, you can get in for 

free during National Lottery Open Week, 

Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th March, if you 

bring your lottery ticket or scratch card.

Langsett Reservoir 

A popular local destination, Langsett 

Reservoir sits at the north-eastern edge 

of the peak district less than five miles

struggle for older dogs and younger children 

as some of the walkway can often be uneven.

countryside as you make your way from 

Greasbrough to Mill Dam returning through 

the woodlands and the farm. Take in the

the local farm animals. This trail is suitable 

for hiking, running and walking as dogs 

are welcome and may be off the lead in 

particular enclosed areas.

Chicken and 

Broccoli Bones 

Ingredients: 

100g plain cooked chicken breast 

100g plain cooked brown rice 

50g steamed broccoli crowns 

(unseasoned) 

1 egg 

2 tbsp plain flour 

3tbsp water 

Method: 

Preheat your oven to 170 degrees 

(Gas mark 4) 

Steam the broccoli heads in the 

microwave; place in a dish with 3 

tbsp water and cook uncovered for 

2-3 minutes. 

In a blender, add the chicken, 

rice and broccoli with an egg and 

combine until pureed. To get better 

results ensure that your blender has 

a pulse option. 

Pour your puree into a mixing 

bowl and add 2 tbsp of flour. Gently 

combine with a fork until smooth. 

Fill your silicone baking moulds 

with the treat mixture and bake 

for 20-25 minutes until the edges 

appear brown. 

Once the mixture is cooked, 

remove from the oven and place 

on the side to cool. After cooling 

the treats can be kept in an airtight 

container refrigerated for up to one 

week. 

Peanut Butter Paws 

Ingredients: 

200g peanut butter 

200g Greek yogurt 

1 ripe banana (optional) 

Method: 

In a medium bowl, mash the 

banana if using. Mix in the peanut 

butter and Greek yogurt until 

smooth and combined. 

Spoon the mixture into an ice 

cube tray or silicone dog treat 

mould, ensuring that the mixture is 

flat. Smooth over with the back of 

a spoon. 

Place the tray into the freezer and 

leave for at least four hours. 

Once frozen let your pup dive 

right in. Add to your dog’s treat 

dispenser for some play time fun.

Visiting Angels invest in their

New groups 

at Barnsley u3a 

Barnsley u3a continues 

to go from strength to 

strength. 

Their 1,300 members now have 

access to over 120 groups covering 

a range of interests from bird 

watching to wine appreciation. 

Many new groups have 

emerged in recent months, 

including the ceilidh group who 

play folk music, and the Soundbath 

group which is a new concept 

where members sit with their eyes 

closed whilst soothing sounds are 

played to them. 

Now the better weather is on 

the horizon, the new gardening 

group is looking forward to getting 

outdoors; they have recently won 

a contract to design and plant a 

section of the union jack design 

in Wentworth Castle Gardens. 

This follows on from a rowan tree 

that Barnsley u3a planted in Monk 

Bretton as part of the Queen’s 

Green Canopy. 

Alongside the individual group 

meetings, Barnsley u3a collectively 

meet at 1.30pm on the first Monday 

of the month at the Metrodome 

where they welcome guest 

speakers. They also host various 

events throughout the year, such as 

the upcoming jazz night in April.

Sheffield’s Classical 

Weekend celebrates 

10th anniversary 

Classical Sheffield’s biennial 

festival, Classical Weekend, is 

back for 2023 to celebrate the 

event’s 10th anniversary. 

Taking place at venues across Sheffield from 

Friday 17th to Sunday 19th March, the weekend 

will involve hundreds of music makers for an 

amazing spectacle of classical music. 

Entry to many of the events is free or just 

£5, keeping costs low so that as many people 

as possible can experience amazing live music 

during the three days. 

The festival opens on Friday 17th March with 

concerts from Music in the Round, The Hallé and 

The University of Sheffield. 

On the Saturday, there will be free pop up 

performances taking place in the Winter Garden, 

plus free Samba and Brass Band workshops led 

by Sheffield Music Hub and Concord All Stars in 

Orchard Square. 

A variety of singing and instrumental groups 

will be performing concerts featuring classical 

and popular classics throughout the day in Upper 

Chapel and St Matthew’s Church Carver Street. 

Four Sheffield community choirs sing together 

for the very first time at Victoria Hall, performing 

Rutter’s ‘The Sprig of Thyme’, and Sheffield Bach 

Choir close the day with their concert at St Mark’s 

Church Broomhill. 

One of the highlights of the weekend is a 

concert dedicated to the music of Barnsley folk 

superstar Kate Rusby on Sunday. ‘Being Human’ 

is a selection of ten of Kate Rusby’s songs in 

an arrangement by Kate Shipway specially 

commissioned for the festival and will be 

premiered at Firth Hall involving over 100 singers 

from local community choirs. 

The weekend’s grand finale is a performance 

of Mahler’s Symphony No.2, Resurrection at 

Sheffield City Hall. Beginning with an award 

ceremony for the finalists of the Stella Jockel 

Young Composer Competition for composers 

aged 18 to 35, there will then be the world 

première of the winning piece performed 

by Hallam Choral Society and the Sheffield 

Philharmonic Chorus. The choirs will then 

be joined on stage by Hallam Sinfonia and 

the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra for a 

spectacular performance of Mahler’s Second 

Symphony featuring local award-winning singers 

Anna Harvey and Ella Taylor.

Things to remember when selling a house 

Selling a house can be a 

complex process, and there 

are many factors to consider in 

order to ensure a smooth and 

successful sale. 

The work of conveyancers helps to reduce 

this significantly by taking on many of the more 

complex tasks. National Conveyancing Week 

runs from Monday 20th March to Friday 24th 

March to highlight the work being carried out by 

many conveyancers behind the scenes. 

Much of the work done by those in this 

profession goes unseen and can be complex, 

leading to misunderstandings about what is 

involved. A lot goes into selling a property, but 

these experts do it each and every day, despite 

the challenges faced! 

Conveyancing 

The conveyancing process involves 

transferring legal ownership of the property from 

the seller to the buyer. It is essential to work with 

a qualified solicitor or conveyancer who can 

handle the legal aspects of the sale, including 

the drafting and review of contracts, the transfer 

of funds, and the registration of ownership with 

the Land Registry. 

Energy Performance 

Certificate (EPC) 

An EPC is required when selling a residential 

property in England and Wales. The EPC rates 

the energy efficiency of the property on a scale 

from A to G, with A being the most energyefficient. 

The certificate is valid for 10 years and 

must be provided to the buyer before the sale is 

completed. 


Capital Gains Tax 

Subject to certain conditions, you do not need 

to pay Capital Gains Tax when you sell your 

home. If you sell a property that isn’t your home, 

or you live abroad, you may need to pay Capital 

Gains tax. A specialist tax advisor can help you 

understand whether any tax might be payable. 

Property Information Forms 

When selling a residential property, the seller 

is required to complete a Property Information 

Form and a Fittings and Contents Form - so your 

conveyancer will make sure this is complete by 

sending you all the relevant paperwork, and help 

you complete it. 

The Property Information Form provides the 

buyer with details about the property, such as 

any disputes or complaints with neighbours, 

building work or renovations, and any guarantees 

or warranties that are still valid. The Fittings and 

Contents Form lists all the items that are included 

in the sale, such as appliances or light fixtures. 

Property Boundaries 

It is important to ensure that the property 

boundaries are clearly defined and any disputes 

with neighbours over the boundaries are resolved 

before completing the sale. This can be done 

by checking the title deeds, commissioning a 

survey, or consulting with a solicitor. 

Repairs and Renovations 

It is important to consider any repairs or 

renovations that may be required before putting 

your property on the market. Addressing these 

issues before the sale can help to increase the 

property’s value and make it more appealing to 

potential buyers. 

Timing 

The timing of your sale can have a significant 

impact on the price you receive and the speed of 

the sale. Factors such as the time of year, market 

conditions, and the state of the economy can all 

impact the sale price. It is important to consider 

these factors when deciding when to put your 

property on the market, and to be prepared for 

the possibility that the sale may take longer than 

expected.

Spring 

in the garden

After several recent bitterly cold weeks, the 

temperatures are rising and by March spring 

is in full swing. 

It is one of my favourite months 

of the year, a time of splashes of 

colour as bulbs such as crocus, 

miniature iris, fritillaria, anemone 

blanda and daffodils spread across 

the garden. A time of sunshine 

and optimism when the garden is 

suddenly busy with bird life and the 

growing season finally gets going. 

I have always loved daffodils, not 

only because they appear around 

my birthday and cover the grassed 

walls of York where I was born, but 

also because a sea of them nodding 

in the sunshine lifts the spirits after 

the long dark days of winter. 

There is such an extraordinary 

variety of bulbs on offer to gardeners 

nowadays. I think that the best way 

to choose them is to visit a specialist 

nursery, garden show or garden 

open to the public in the spring and 

see them in flower. Photograph 

the ones that appeal and take a 

note of their names to order later 

in the autumn or, if you wish to buy 

snowdrops, to buy in the ‘green’.

sadly died just before Christmas, 

loved spring flowers as much as I 

do. Together with my brother, we 

spent a wonderful morning visiting 

an enchanting private garden in 

Lincolnshire last spring, a garden 

which she and I first visited the 

spring before for their annual 

snowdrop walk. 

The garden sits snugly in a bend 

of a slim, sinuous river wrapped 

around by light woodland, the ideal 

setting for a spring garden. We were 

captivated by drifts of snowdrops, 

butter-yellow aconites and Iris 

reticulata backed by generous 

clumps of Hellebores ranging 

in colour from pure white to the 

darkest purple. The paths meander 

alongside the streams, which feed 

into the main river, and around the 

outside of high curved walls within 

which sit the more formal gardens 

of the hall. 

It is a peaceful, dreamy place. 

Forget-me-not blue Brunnera was 

already flowering in a sheltered spot, 

clinging to the banks of the stream

with vast puddles of rich yellow and 

purple crocus spread across the 

grass. The underplanting of crocus, 

snowdrops and hardy cyclamen, 

with their marbled heart shaped 

leaves, snaked through fabulous 

shrub planting filling the air with 

delicious scent. 

The flowers of Daphne, 

Sarcococca (sweet box) and 

Lonicera x purpusii (shrubby 

honeysuckle) are small and may 

appear insignificant but they are 

strongly perfumed to attract the few 

early pollinators that may be stirring 

from their wintery slumbers. Ribes 

laurifolium, an evergreen shrub with 

greenish-yellow, sweet-smelling 

flowers was a delight, the perfect foil 

to the spring bulbs. 

Groupings of coloured 

dogwoods (Cornus) and willow 

formed a dramatic upper layer 

with shelter provided by the light 

woodland. Climbers are trained 

up the outer walls of the enclosed 

garden whilst snowdrops and 

aconites romped away up the 

banking on the opposite side of the 

river interspersed with clumps of 

dogwood. By a bench, positioned 

to watch the river flow by, the pretty 

Iris reticulata “Katharine Hodgkin” 

grew. Within the garden walls, which 

is formal in layout, bulbs were once 

again flowering merrily away under 

old trees and in lawned areas.

My mother created her own 

wonderful snowdrop walk down 

which I walked recently. It is 

interspersed with clumps of yolkyellow 

aconites. It lies between two 

ancient laid hedgerows with her 

orchard, grazed by her neighbour’s 

sheep, one side and open fields 

on the other. With help from my 

husband and daughter, she planted 

bluebells at the end of the walk and 

enjoyed taking visitors on her own 

snowdrop walk. The hedgerows are 

full of activity now, of birds looking 

for sites to nest, an absolute joy. 

Knowing how much I love spring 

flowers, a few years ago my mother 

sent me masses of snowdrops in 

‘the green’ through the post and 

these, together with others from 

friends and ones I have transplanted 

from elsewhere in my garden, have 

enabled me to create my own 

nascent snowdrop walk along a 

wiggly path through a lightly wooded 

area. I am backing the path with 

primroses, Hellebores, Euphorbias, 

Lamium maculatum, Cornus and 

some spring flowering shrubs and 

have added some bird boxes for our 

feathered friends. 

The walk will be a lasting 

reminder every spring of my 

wonderful gardening mother, of the 

plants we have swapped and our 

gardening adventure together.

Sheriff Award is 

to their ears 

They’re not the type to 

blow their own trumpet. But 

Thorpe Hesley Brass Band 

have been presented with an 

award from the High Sheriff of 

South Yorkshire, Lt Col Mac 

McPherson, for their services 

to music. 

The High Sheriff Award was formally presented 

to the band on Saturday 25th February at Holy 

Trinity Church, Thorpe Hesley, where the band 

gave a stellar performance showing why they were 

worthy winners.

I don’t quite know what I expected when taking 

a pew in the church. But from the off, Thorpe 

Hesley Brass Band blew me away. Conductor, 

Wayne Bostwick, was right when he said they 

don’t do subtle. Bon Jovi’s ‘It’s My Life’ set the 

tone, followed by Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’, a 

Barnsley version of ‘Under the Boardwalk’, and 

even the YMCA. Theirs is the type of performance 

that leaves your feet tapping, makes your hairs 

stand up on the back of your neck, and gives you 

a lump in your throat. 

As he presented the award, the High Sheriff 

praised the band for their contribution to the wider 

community. 

He said: “I’ve taken a slightly different 

approach in choosing my High Sheriff 

commendations. I have been searching for 

unsung heroes who take no money, and not 

enough thanks, but enhance the lives of others. 

Thorpe Hesley Brass Band are the perfect 

recipients. They’re innovative, imaginative and 

certainly entertaining. 

“The standard they play at shows the 

significant amount of work that members put in. 

It’s lovely to watch the very youngest to the more 

mature who are all a credit to the band and a 

credit to the communities they represent.” 

The accolade comes after the band first 

impressed the High Sheriff at his summer garden 

party at Wortley Hall last July. Visitors from around 

the country who attended the party were stunned 

at how Thorpe Hesley Brass Band go beyond the 

traditional brass style. 

They’re known to march to the beat of their 

own drum, differing from many other ensembles 

by not competing. Success to them is simply 

making brass banding fun and rewarding. They’re 

a community, a family of talented people who 

come together and simply play for the love of 

music. 

Their 16 members range in age from pre-teens 

to pensioners. Their youngest member is ten-yearold 

Holly who plays the horn. Music must be in 

her blood as her parents, cornet player Kathy and 

drummer Martin, met each other in the band. 

“There’s something very charming about the 

family bond they have, and I was impressed with 

how they attract and train younger people,” said 

the High Sheriff. 

Young people have always been at the heart 

of the band. It was formed in 1986 by the then 

headteacher of Thorpe Hesley Junior School, 

Brian Copley who wanted to enable children 

taking part in school music lessons to continue 

on with their learning to play an instrument after 

moving up to secondary school. 

Originally, the teens then left at 16 when they 

finished school. However, three of the band’s 

founder members decided they didn’t want to 

leave – and two of them are still there over 30 

years later. 

Over the years, the band has had several 

conductors but for the last eight years Wayne 

has directed their performances. Their repertoire 

covers a mix of genres from carols to pop songs, 

with a focus on playing music that band members 

like. They are often invited to play at community 

events and can also be booked for special 

occasions like weddings and funerals. 

The band is always looking for more members 

to join them. There are no minimum grade 

requirements and no auditions to become a 

member, but you do need to have some playing 

experience and an ability to read music. So if 

you’re looking for an excuse to pick up your 

instrument again, want to boost your confidence 

or improve your skills, why not be a part of Thorpe 

Hesley Brass Band.

coming to Sheffield

Setting up a Big Top at Don 

Valley Bowl, the weekend event will 

see some of the UK’s biggest music

Roll Circus is where the best in

and wonderful world of the circus.

The weekend event kicks off 

on Friday 1st September with 

headliners Noel Gallagher’s High 

Flying Birds. With the new album 

‘Council Skies’ set for release 

on 2nd June, this appearance in 

Sheffield is the conclusion of an 

extended run of summer concerts in 

the UK for the legendary star. 

Having had Noel headline the 

inaugural Rock N Roll Circus in 

Newcastle last summer, the event 

organisers are looking forward to 

bringing the touring circus concept 

to music fans in Yorkshire. 

Joining Noel Gallagher’s High 

Flying Birds will be Happy Mondays, 

The Cribs, The Joy Formidable and 

Somebody’s Child. 

Happy Mondays need little 

introduction. The ‘Madchester’ 

band from Salford were one of the 

most popular forces of alternative 

music in the late ‘80s to early ‘90s. 

They are considered one of the true 

originals from the early indie scene 

and will be performing all of their 

classics at Rock N Roll Circus. 

Wakefield’s finest The Cribs, 

led by the Ryan Garman and his 

two brothers, will be bringing their 

spiky lo-fi indie rock to the Rock N 

Roll Circus party. Welsh alternative 

rockers The Joy Formidable and 

Somebody’s Child, AKA Cian 

Godfrey, one of Ireland’s most 

spellbinding breakthrough vocalists 

of the year so far, complete the 

music line-up. 

If you love rock and roll, you 

won’t want to miss this incredibly 

exciting and immersive event.

The popular Rising Deer in the quaint village 

of Brampton en-le Morthen now has new 

managers who and are promising to keep 

things relatively unchanged while just elevating 

the current food offer. 

Following a huge renovation 

project, the pub reopened in 

summer 2021 and the team has 

worked hard over the last two years 

to gain a reputation for its quality 

food, welcoming atmosphere,

However, there are times when 

I realise I have the best job in the 

world. 

In February I was invited to Toro 

DO in Spain by a lady called Nicola 

Thornton. She owns Spanish Palate, 

a company that produces amazing 

wines from all over Spain, but in 

particular, Toro, a town situated on 

the Duero River about two and a 

half hours northwest of Madrid. 

Nicola hails from Wickersley in 

Rotherham, so it was amazing to 

see someone from my town doing 

wonders in the wine industry. In 

between cooking a risotto amidst 

acres of old bush vines, sampling 

some of Spain’s best wine and 

watching the famous Caneval 

de Toro parade, we talked about 

the duty we both feel we have to 

introduce the good people of South 

Yorkshire to these fabulous wines. 

WHAT IS 

TORO DO? 

It is a red wine producing region, 

using the Tinta de Toro grape, also 

known as Tempranillo elsewhere 

in Spain. It was registered as a 

Denominacion de Origin (DO) 

in 1987, which means that the 

grapes have to be grown within the 

permitted areas of Toro. 

It neighbours Rueda DO, a wine 

region specialising in white wines 

made from the Verdejo grape. 

Spanish Palate produce both a 

Toro and Rueda under their Botas 

de Barro range. 

WHAT IS 

BOTAS DE BARRO? 

Botas de Barro literally translates 

as ‘Dirty Boots’. The labels of all 

the range have a pair of boots on 

the front, which were worn by the 

farmers who Nicola and Spanish 

Palate work with. Spanish Palate 

work with rural farmers across 

Spain, finding the best people, 

getting them a fair deal for the 

grapes they grow and, most of all, 

telling their stories through the wine 

they produce.

A red wine made from Tinta de 

Toro (Tempranillo) with an intense 

red cherry colour and very marked 

violet edging. In the nose the wine 

is intense and very expressive. The 

wine is relatively young 

so expect black fruits 

with notes of violets and 

liquorice, intertwined with 

subtle oak notes. 

On the palate, it is 

intense and alive, a 

great metaphor for 

the town of Toro 

itself. Good 

tannic structure 

that will help 

perfectly 

accompany 

red meat 

and 

sheep’s

Barro Rueda DO, 

2021, 13%, Verdejo.

Rueda is without doubt 

one of Spain’s best white 

wine regions thanks to 

its indigenous grape, Verdejo. The 

region is right next to Toro and 

produces fresh wines with good 

acidity and an incredible aromatic 

intensity. 

Expect a crisp, fresh and 

extremely aromatic dry white that 

expresses all the character and 

elegance of the Rueda region.

Makes 12 

Ingredients 

Biscuit Base 

200g Oreos 

100g unsalted butter (melted) 

Cheesecake Filling 

300g full fat cream cheese 

50g icing sugar 

1tsp vanilla extract 

150ml double cream 

Toppings 

150g mini eggs 

Method 

Gently combine the crushed 

biscuits and melted butter in a small 

bowl. Once the ingredients are well 

combined, set the bowl aside while 

you prepare the cheesecake filling. 

In a large bowl, whisk together 

the cream cheese, icing sugar and 

vanilla extract until smooth. Whip the 

double cream until soft peaks begin 

to form. Pour into the cheese mixture 

and whip together until thick. 

Line a muffin tin with cupcake 

cases and fill the bottom of each 

liner with a spoonful of biscuit 

mixture. Use a small glass or back 

of a spoon to press down on the 

crushed biscuits to form the base. 

Fill each case with the cheesecake 

mixture and leave to set in the fridge 

for at least 3-4 hours. 

Carefully remove the cheesecakes 

from the tin and decorate with your 

desired chocolate toppings. We love 

adding mini eggs but you can use 

any Easter themed chocolates.

Ingredients

150g softened butter 

200g brown sugar 

100g granulated sugar 

2 eggs 

1tsp vanilla extract 

300g plain flour 

1tsp baking soda 

1tsp ground cinnamon 

½ tsp salt 

2 medium carrots (grated) 

400g plain oats 

Cream cheese glaze 

200g icing sugar 

30g cream cheese 

4tsp milk 

¼ tsp vanilla extract 

Method 

Preheat the oven at 170/c. Line a 

square baking tray with parchment 

paper.

Makes 6 

Ingredients 

2 large egg whites 

120g caster sugar 

500g strawberries (chopped) 

450ml double cream 

1tbsp icing sugar 

Blueberries to decorate 

Method 

Preheat the oven at 120/C 

and line a large baking tray with 

parchment paper. 

Whisk the egg whites in a mixing 

bowl until they reach stiff peaks. 

Add the sugar in gently and re-whisk 

until glossy. 

Spoon even dollops of the 

mixture onto the baking paper 

In a bowl beat together butter and 

sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs 

individually and gently mix until all 

combined, then add your vanilla 

extract. 

In a separate bowl, mix flour, 

baking soda, cinnamon and salt 

when combined. Add the dry 

ingredients to the batter then stir in 

the carrots and oats until smooth. 

Scoop out portions and roll into 

individual circles. Place each round 

of dough onto the baking tray and 

bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Take out 

of the oven and leave to cool while 

you make the topping. 

Mix cream cheese, icing sugar, 

milk and vanilla until combined. 

Drizzle glaze over each cookie and 

leave to set before serving.

meringues are hard. Leave to cool 

while you make the topping. 

Using a blender, blitz a third 

of the strawberries to make the 

strawberry sauce. Whisk the cream 

with the icing sugar until it holds 

its shape. Place the mixture in the 

centre of your meringues and top 

with remaining strawberries and 

blueberries (if using) and a drizzle of 

homemade sauce.
