EXPLORING
THE INTERSECTION OF
MODERNITY AND ANTIQUITY
Part of a growing national renaissance of traditional arts and crafts,
Kapten Batik has incorporated timeless Malaysian batik
patterns into its contemporary fashion collections.
Kapten Batik is the creation of former engineers-turned-entrepreneurs Farhan Omar and Ekram Faiz, who recognised the decline in the use of
traditional batik by young Malaysians and developed a clothing label that sought to inject batik with a contemporary energy while preserving
its timeless processes.
Launched in Kuala Lumpur and inspired by the founders' travels through Asia, Kapten Batik fuses classic tailoring with modern batik designs
created in the traditional Malaysian style. The brand has grown from strength to strength as a new generation embraces this new fusion and
begins to wear batik every day, not just for formal occasions.
To maintain this balance between the past and the present, Kapten Batik employs master craftsmen as well as in-house designers to create
dynamic motifs that pay homage to tradition while also capturing iconic scenes of Malaysia. In fact, many of these sui generis designs are
inspired by Farhan and Ekram's own travels, with prints then applied to sustainable fabrics, including Supima"-certified cotton in the case of
the Masterpiece series (which is produced using 1,000-year-old techniques) and GOTS-certified organic cotton for items in the Maharaja series.
Fabrics are stringently tested to OEKO-TEX standards to ensure they are free of harmful chemicals and substances.
Initially specialising in men's batik shirts-each a sturdy yet stylish item with button down collar, hand- carved buttons, and versatile seams the
company is now expanding its lines. It recently launched the Together21 collection of menswear, which includes feather-soft shirts in vibrant
and soft-hued prints with both contemporary and traditional elements; and has revamped its Nusantara series with new in- house designs set
against mercerised*** cotton.
Kapten Batik has also introduced women's kaftans, men's swimwear, the Pure Linen series of resort wear which features European linen flax;
and Kapten Batik PRIVE, a made-to-measure service that offers a highly bespoke approach to batik creations for discerning customers.
Visit the Kapten Batik website to browse through their collection at www.kaptenbatik.com.my

THE
BATIK
BARON
Engineer-turned-fashionista
Farhan Omar created Kapten Batik
to add a modern touch to Malaysia’s
timeless batik tradition.
WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU AND CO-FOUNDER EKRAM FAIZ TO CREATE A
MODERN BATIK FASHION LABEL?
Back in 2016, we noticed traditional batik was in decline and that young people were
wearing batik less and less. We wanted to start a batik evolution, so that batik would no
longer be considered old fashioned and all generations could feel excited about our
heritage again - to do this, we revamped the whole process from scratch. Once we decided
on this approach, we used travel as our inspiration. We love to travel and we love to see the
things we have seen converted into art by combining the traditional batik technique with
the finest fabrics.
DO YOU COME FROM A FASHION BACKGROUND?
No. Both of us are engineering graduates who have become fashion entrepreneurs. Our
engineering skills, which help in the making of decisions and the direction of the brand,
produce a different approach to that of the men’s fashion retail industry.
WHAT ROLE DOES BATIK PLAY IN MALAYSIAN
CULTURE?
Batik symbolises Malaysian lifestyle and culture. We
put all the art of our surroundings into the patterns
on the fabric and wear it proudly. Batik artis our
cultural practice, passed down from generation to
generation. Batik is also an important element in
our textile industry and Malaysia’s approach in
terms of colour, technique and motifs is very
different from giant producers in other countries.
Malaysian batik is more modern, flexible and
suitable for a multi- ethnic country.
HOW ARE YOUR MODERN INTERPRETATIONS
OF BATIK RECEIVED BY MALAYSIANS?
We have seen tremendous results over the past four
years. All generations and all ethnicities are wearing our
batik and we love it – especially when they tag us while
they are travelling and proudly wearing Malaysian batik.
WE’RE SEEING A NUMBER OF CONTEMPORARY
DESIGNERS EMPLOYING BATIK INTO THEIR
PRODUCTS; WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS FUELLED
THIS RENAISSANCE?
There’s a growing awareness and an evolution of how
batik can be used today and as demand increases, more
young designers are using batik in their fashion. Once
again, you can see people in their batik, especially for
social weekend drinks and even as resort wear.
TELL US ABOUT THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS
FOR KAPTEN BATIK’S BATIK PRINTS
We always snap a lot of photos during our travels and
these photos are used by our team of textile designers to
design contemporary patterns that they then pass on to
our block artisan to create a batik block from brass,
copper or wood. We work with our skilful master artisan
to use the block to create a new pattern on a piece of
greige fabric; we don’t use ready-made fabric as we need
a base that’s breathable and comfortable, so we use fine
cotton weave instead.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM KAPTEN BATIK?
As our aim is to be a lifestyle brand, we are partnering
with the likes of The Datai Langkawi, Malaysia Airlines and
Disney to reach our potential clientele. We are about to
launch our first ever women’s collection and our Pulao
brand, which specialises in men’s tailored swim shorts. As
an environmentally conscious brand, we have stopped
using single-use plastics and by 2022, all our products will
be produced using organic cotton, certified to GOTS and
OEKO Tex standards.

MARCH/APRIL 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE
Editor ' s Note
Because of the obvious benefits, maintaining a healthy and
active lifestyle has become a priority for many people.
In addition to lowering your risk of cardiovascular disease,
leading an active lifestyle with sufficient physical activity and
exercise can greatly benefit your health in a number of other
ways, including increasing self-esteem, boosting energy and
focus, and alleviating stress and anxiety.
Experts recommend that adults engage in at least 30 minutes
of moderate-intensity physical activity five days a week in
order to reap the health advantages of regular exercise. Such
activities include brisk walking, cycling, dancing and swimming.
If you’re looking for the best sports footwear, attire and other
accessories, head to Sports Paragon in Tropicana Gardens
Mall. With its spacious layout of almost 7,000 square feet,
this multi-brand outlet has everything you need to keep fit.
Its brand manager, Victor Tiew tells us more in this issue’s
Cover Story.
Still on the topic of sports, find out how physical activity can
help students develop positive traits like discipline, teamwork
and perseverance in our Education section.
And, since the World Day for Safety and Health at Work falls
on 28 April, our writer has compiled ways for companies to
help staff deal with stress and boost productivity. Speaking of
stress relief, check out our Nature section to learn more about
the many advantages of highland living.
We’ve also got some light reads like celebrity skincare, island
WHEN
OLD IS
GOLD
Traditional Malay Raya cookies take pride of place in
the hearts of many, especially with Hari Raya Aidilfitri
approaching soon. Old favourites like batang buruk,
biskut Mazola, kuih bangkit kelapa, biskut samperit and
tat nenas are sure to elicit feelings of joy and nostalgia
from those who remember these bites of deliciousness
from their childhood. Whether baked by grandmothers,
mothers or aunts, these tasty morsels provide more than
just good taste: They bring the person eating it on a trip
down memory lane

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
BATANG BURUK
Covered in powdered sugar, these sweet nutty bites are a labour of
love as they are tedious and time-consuming to make. With the outer
shell made using three different kinds of flour, the filling consists
of mung beans that have been fried with coconut, cooled and then
blended. A monumental effort to make as rolling one kilogramme of
dough to make its iconic cylindrical shape takes six hours!
TAT NENAS
Ever present in households during Hari Raya, these delectable
tarts are hard to resist. The pastry consists of flour, custard
flour, corn flour and eggs. Meanwhile, the pineapple filling
is made from the flesh of the ripe fruit, which is left to cook
for hours with sugar. The result is a tart that crumbles in the
mouth with a sweet and piquant pineapple jam filling.
SAMPERIT
In the olden days, not much thought was put into using
accurate measurements to make these tasty treats which
oftentimes are the result of multiple trial and error attempts.
Butter, flour (less than a cup for each batch), corn flour, sugar
and up to 20 egg yolks go into making this delightful cookie.
BANGKIT KELAPA
Light, crispy and crunchy with a hint of coconut, the bangkit
kelapa is made with grated coconut, flour, corn flour and tapioca
flour. To make them last longer (up to 10 months), the cookies are
baked at a lower temperature for a longer time. This ensures that
the entire cookie is cooked through, leaving it crisp and crunchy.
17
BISKUT MAZOLA
The cookie gets its name from the popular corn oil brand used
by many around the world. Very much an old school treat, the
cookie even looks the part, dotted with half a peanut atop
its glazed surface. Flour, peanuts, corn oil and sugar go into
making it. A firm favourite among those in the know, these
delectable peanut-ty treats just melt in the mouth.

LEARNING LIFE SKILLS
THROUGH SPORTS
Sports and other forms of physical activity can help students
develop positive traits like discipline, teamwork and
perseverance

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Tenby International School Tropicana Aman’s Swimming Gala
Sport is very much part of school
life at SJIIM
In addition to the obvious health advantages, sports and
fitness activities have been proven to benefit children
socially and psychologically, enabling them to live
happier and healthier lives. One of the most essential
benefits is discipline. Having the right amount of mental,
physical and tactical discipline is key in every sport’s
activity. A child’s willpower and ability to exercise selfcontrol
are all honed by participation in sports.
Activities in sports also instil in young people the values
of patience and perseverance, teaching them that hard
work and dedication eventually pay off. If they learn
how to persevere at a young age, they will have greater
coping skills as well as the ability to think critically. This will
prepare them to handle greater challenges in the future.
One cannot always win in sports, just as one cannot
always win in life. Young people who participate in
sports gain an early understanding of this principle.
So, they learn to take setbacks and lose with dignity.
They learn to keep trying even when they fail and to
not let failure get them down. Also, they learn the value
of friendly rivalry through this experience. The value of
working together is another crucial life skill that kids
can pick up by participating in sports.
Children learn the importance of teamwork and the
need to play to each member’s strengths in order to
win. Also, they learn to put others before themselves
and not allow pride get in the way. Learning to work
with others is a crucial trait, and if they acquire this
quality at an early age, they will be better team players
as adults in the workplace.
Sports activities foster leadership skills as well.
Becoming or striving to be a team captain, for
instance, teaches kids valuable lessons in leadership,
such as how to communicate with teammates,
handle group emotions, sacrifice for the greater
good, and so on.
At St Joseph’s International School Malaysia (SJIIM)
(Tropicana PJ campus), sport is very much part of
school life. All students experience a wide variety of
different sporting activities through PE lessons, as well
as the diverse co-curricular activities programme the
school has to offer.
“We believe in the concept of ‘sport for all’ with
a focus on progression and enjoyment. All pupils
are encouraged to pursue sports in which they are
talented or interested in. We aim to promote lifelong
participation in sport by adopting an inclusive, fun and
supportive approach to all sporting competitions.”
At Tenby International School Tropicana Aman,
students’ participation in extracurricular activities is an
essential component of their education and their active
participation is a reflection of their commitment to the
success of their academic careers.
This is because such activities promote holistic
growth by providing them with opportunities to try
out pursuits that pique their interest, while fostering
a love of learning and a growth mindset through the
satisfaction of meeting and conquering challenges in a
fun, engaging and participatory environment.
CHIC PET CARRIERS
Match your designer bags with these premium pet carriers
for your pampered pooch or fancy cat
It’s clear that pets are on the fast track to celebrity status since
high-end brands and designers are introducing carriers for their
owners to carry them in.
For the jet-setting pet, there is the Louis Vuitton pet carrier.
Styled in Monogram canvas with natural cowhide trim, it is
designed for comfort with plush carpet and a soft ventilation net.
Easy to carry with its adjustable shoulder strap, it’s the stylish,
practical way to travel with a pet.
For the very posh pup, check out Goyard’s pet trunk. Called the
Niche trunk, it is designed for carrying a dog, or for using as a
kennel at home. Measuring at 55cm x 40cm x 45cm, this spacious
trunk is covered in Goyardine canvas and enhanced with the
brand’s Clamecy cowhide.
The French brand also has smaller and less structured pet carriers
such as the Voltiguer, which comes in the style of a duffel bag,
and the Chien Gris that takes inspiration from Goyard’s popular St
Louis tote. Both models are available in several colours like black,
blue, green, yellow, orange and white.
If you’re looking for something lightweight, Prada has a nylon
and leather version. Decorated with the Italian label’s triangle
logo, the black-coloured pet carrier features a removable bottom
lining and external pockets for added practicality.
Want to look stylish without compromising your environmental
principles? Look no further than Anya Hindmarch’s Dog Tote.
Part of the British brand’s I Am A Plastic Bag collection, the Dog
Tote is made from plastic bottles previously destined for landfill.
The bag is crafted in a cotton canvas-feel fabric and coated in a
material made from car windshields to give it a durable and petresistant
finish. The inside reveals a zipped pocket
and a removable 100% recycled shearling
lining on the base of the bag to keep your
pup comfortable and cosy, in addition
ART CITIES
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about a city’s
to do just that
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
In 2020, when the Albertina Modern was added to the city’s roster of art institutions,
Vienna’s reputation as a centre for epoch-defining modern art shifted dramatically.
This architectural collage of white space and refurbished baroque-style rooms was
constructed within the shell of the city’s 19th-century Künstlerhaus at a cost of €50
(about RM233) million. It serves as the backdrop for a 60,000-piece collection of
modern art by some of the 20th century’s most renowned artists such as Andy Warhol,
Cindy Sherman and Gerhard Richter.
KYOTO, JAPAN
You can’t help but fall in love with Kyoto. This is a city
The Karate Kid, you’ll want to visit the Kyoto Samurai
and Ninja Museum. There are no beautiful paintings
here, but this museum provides a fascinating look at the
materials used by samurai warriors, as well as detailed
aspects of their history. If this doesn’t suit your fancy,
there are plenty of different places to visit to satisfy your
artistic and cultural desires. The Kyoto Railway Museum,
the Kyoto National Museum, and the Museum of Kyoto
a bright and sunny day, a trip through Ekebergparken
Sculpture Park, which is surrounded by pine trees is an
MARCH/APRIL 2023 SWING TOOLS
Tips for a
BETTER SWING
60
Check out these golf swing improvement
strategies to boost your game

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Focus
As you set up to take a shot, try
visualising yourself making a
fantastic swing and sending the
ball exactly where you want it to
land. Instead of worrying about
the worst-case scenario, focus on
the positive. Consider mentally
framing the perfect shot.
Posture check
If your stance is off, your shot
won’t go the way you want it to.
Check that the distance between
your feet is proportional to
the width of your shoulders by
standing with your feet shoulderwidth
apart. Make sure that your
feet, knees, hips and shoulders are
all in a straight line along the line
you’ve drawn in your mind that
leads to the aim. Right foot should
be perpendicular to flight path, left
foot slightly open.
Stay balanced
When standing, it’s crucial
to maintain an even weight
distribution on your feet’s balls
(the slightly padded areas under
the foot just further down from
the toes) rather than your heels.
If you do this, you will be able to
twist your back foot more readily
as your downswing comes to a
close.
61
Relax your grip
The fact that the grip should be
relaxed in order to encourage
club head speed and a clean,
precise strike is one golf grip tip
that can be applied by all golfers.
Many golfers clench their grip
too tightly as they swing, causing
them to lose power.
Don’t rush
Take your time and don’t rush your
backswing. Trying to get a faster
downswing by rushing the backswing
is pointless. To prepare your body for
the movement in the exact opposite
direction, you should slow down
as you approach the peak of your
backswing. Additionally, keep in mind
that the backswing should maintain
a constant speed rather than dipping
into a fast or slow range. Your swing
will be disrupted, and you’ll likely
take a bad shot as a result.
Hit the ball on its side
Many golfers will attempt to hit
the golf ball right in the middle
when hitting full shots. In theory, it
does make sense. But beautiful full
shots occur when the ball is struck
within the inside quadrant rather
than the very centre.

MARCH/APRIL 2023 LIFEHACKS
LUXURIOUS
LIFE HACKS
A luxe interior oozes style and sophistication.
Here, we bring you some life hacks to add a
touch of pizzazz to your home’s interior and
bring it to a new level of elegance
76

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
There’s something about lovely interiors that inspire the
interior designer in all of us. Colour schemes, materials, shapes
of the furniture, and room layouts are important elements
that can make or break a room. Here, we list some ingenious
ideas that can spark your creativity and inspire you to bring a
touch of glamour to your own space.
Go glamorous with glass
Use a glass box in place of a frame. Place one on a surface and
fill it with items that are meaningful to you, such as holiday
souvenirs, photos from your childhood, and postcards or
gifts from friends. It will surely add an extra touch of glam
to your home.
Turn teapots into floral vessels
Teapots come in all shapes and sizes. Some are downright
adorable, with their chubby and lovely shapes. Use their
cuteness as a vessel for your favourite blooms instead of
traditional vases. Their quirkiness will surely strike up a
conversation among your guests!
Make a bold statement with wall art
Just like in an art gallery, large pieces of art command
attention as they become a focal point. At home, you can
replicate this same effect by opting for large-scale art pieces
as opposed to smaller ones. Go big or go home!
Unbearable lightness of being
Maximise space and light and “increase” the square footage
of your space without actually renovating by hanging a mirror.
A well-placed mirror, particularly a large one, will create an
optical illusion that will make a room feel bigger and brighter
than it really is, as well as reflect any light that hits it. For
optimum results, you may want to consider hanging a mirror
near a window to bounce as much light as possible.
Bling factor
For a bohemian-inspired home, why not repurpose your old
rhinestone necklaces or any other blingy jewellery to make
curtain tiebacks. The pretty pieces will add a certain je ne sais
quoi to your home. Not to mention, it will elevate the beauty
of your abode!
Scintillating scents
Imagine walking into a room and being greeted by the sweet
smell of freesias. Whatever scent you favour, marking a room
with its very own special scent is a surefire way to elevate
it! A sweet-smelling room can instantly lift moods, relax and
calm you down. Use scented candles, wax melts, incense,
wall diffusers or simply simmering ingredients like cinnamon,
vanilla, ginger or lemongrass on the stovetop!
Go green
For a more natural appeal, consider adding house plants to
fill out empty corners. In addition to bringing life to your
home, research has found that rooms with plants have less
dust and mould than rooms without any foliage. They also
help to reduce anxiety and help you relax. For a high-end
look, consider placing a large plant in a statement planter. For
those who don’t have green thumbs, buy bouquets from the
florist and display them around your home.
Dramatic wall treatments
Perfect your window treatments by featuring full-length
curtains. Not only do they make a space feel much more
custom and luxurious, more importantly, hanging a curtain
rod high will make the ceilings appear higher as high ceilings
are usually associated with luxe interiors. Use luxurious fabric
with a bit of sheen so they create lots of folds and watch the
drama unfold!
Plush carpeting
A statement-making rug will not only ground your furniture,
it also brings everything together by setting the stage for the
rest of your room. Choose a large rug to accommodate your
furniture arrangement. The texture, colour and size of the rug
will add a more customised and luxurious look.
Table toppers
Nothing makes a statement quite like a dramatic table
setting. Whether you’re preparing for an intimate dinner
party or planning a big bash, tablescapes are a festive way
to kick off any good celebration. For a beautiful table, think
creative centerpieces, unexpected colour palettes, and a
multitude of plants.
Front Runner in
RETAIL
Sports Paragon brand manager, Victor Tiew
tells us how the flagship store with a new
retail concept at Tropicana Gardens Mall is
staying ahead of the game
The sporting goods industry as a whole is worth
billions of dollars and is not going anywhere anytime
soon since staying active and healthy has evolved into
a lifestyle choice in its own right.
Most multi-brand sporting goods stores, he notes,
provide brand options by sport category, so if a customer
wants to buy anything for running, he will find numerous
brands that cater to it.
This means that there is continuous demand for sporting
goods. However, even though consumers have a lot of
options when it comes to purchasing sports gear, doing
so might be a hassle if they have to go to several stores.
Enter Sports Paragon, a multi-brand sporting goods
retailer.
“At Sports Paragon, however, the running section is
everything Brooks (an American fitness apparel company
best known for producing high quality, reliable running
shoes), while the football section is Kronos (the preferred
brand for football players). Having said that, we supply the
complete selection of items for running, football, and so on.”
“Sports Paragon is our new retail concept, which
combines multiple brands in a single retail outlet. The
fact that we focus on several different sports and carry
selected specialised brands sets us apart from other
types of multi-brand sporting goods retailers,” explains
Victor Tiew, who is one of the directors of Paragon Vest
Sdn Bhd, the parent company of Sports Paragon.
Although Paragon Vest was established in 1993, it didn’t
enter the retail sector until about eight years ago. The
company currently has 18 mono-brand stores as well as its
latest concept store, Sports Paragon, which opened in 2021.
“We were (and continue to be) involved in distributing,
branding and supplying to sports stores such as Sports
we are diversifying and expanding into various product
Victor.
At present, Sports Paragon is home to a total of
seven brands, each of which focuses on products for
“Brooks, Kronos, Atlanta, Peak, PRIME, Zoot and
different purpose makes it simple and uncomplicated
for consumers to track for the products that match their
He adds that the company plans to launch three to four
more “small brands” in the near future that are focused
on the accessories for sports, such as nutritional
products like energy bars and drink mixes that are either
used for after sports recovery or for enhancement of
athletic performance. This also includes shoe insoles,
Le Domaine is a gender-neutral skincare line developed
with the Perrin family of France, winemakers and partners
in the winery Brad purchased years ago.
The brand is built on the efficacy of grape-based
antioxidants. At the heart of Le Domaine is a combination
of the exclusive active compounds GSM10 and ProGR3.
Derived from a mixture of marc from Grenache seeds, Syrah
seeds and skins connected with a post-biotic microorganism
favourable to the skin microbiome, GSM10’s molecule
possesses powerful levels of antioxidants and anti-MMPs
(matrix metallo-proteinases, such as collagenase, which
destroys collagen). Combining three naturally occurring
compounds found in vine sarments, camomile and green
tea, ProGR3 has been proven to be effective in reducing the
toxicity of progerin, a protein that functions as a marker for
ageing. It enables skin to fight against the visible signs of
ageing, and as a result, it helps the skin age healthily.
paired with products already in your routine,” says Scarlett.
According to Kate Foster, the brand’s co-founder and
CEO, during their study prior to launching the brand, they
learned that many consumers struggled to find effective
and clean products. “We wanted to create a universal line
that as many people as possible could use without fear of
potential irritation or sensitivity. That’s why we eliminated
around 2,700 ingredients of concern - a very high standard
when it comes to clean beauty - and added some great
innovations like our botanical Hyaluroset Complex, to
deliver results.”
MARCH/APRIL 2023 HEALTH & WELLNESS
Decrease Stress and Boost
PRODUCTIVITY
Workplace stress can be an issue, but there are ways for
employers to assist employees cope with and overcome stress
ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION IN SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Because employees spend a significant amount of time
in close quarters with one another, it is in everyone’s
best interest to ensure that they are as relaxed as
possible. As colleagues spend more time together, they
are better able to understand each other and break
down barriers to communication and expectations,
which makes subsequent encounters much smoother.
102
ESTABLISH A CULTURE WHERE TRANSPARENCY IS
VALUED
Make it a priority to foster an environment in which
team members can speak freely and honestly with one
another. Disputes amongst team members are likely
to arise occasionally, so make sure you handle it right
away in a manner that is professional, courteous and
transparent.
COMMUNICATE
Lack of communication can cause a surprising amount
of tension. Many people are stressed not by the job
they’re assigned to, but by the uncertainty surrounding
it as a whole. The best way to alleviate this uneasiness
is to encourage workers to speak up to management
about any issues they may be having. It’s a good way to
get concerns heard and questions answered.

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
SHOW APPRECIATION FOR YOUR STAFF
Appreciating the efforts of staff members and publicly
acknowledging their achievements can have a profound
effect on morale and productivity. When deciding how
and when to show appreciation, keep in mind that
each employee is unique. Some workers would rather
have a note placed on their desk or an in-person thank
you than be singled out in a meeting. No matter the
method you use, employees will appreciate knowing
that you’re cognisant of their accomplishment. They
become happier and more at ease as a result, which
reduces stress.
MANAGEABLE WORKLOAD
Having too much to do is a common cause of stress. Time
constraints are inevitable in most professions. That, however,
is not the same as someone who is continuously faced with
a mountain of duties that they simply cannot complete, or
deadlines they cannot fulfil. As they continue to fall behind,
they will feel helpless and overwhelmed. They then miss even
more deadlines and suffer from greater anxiety or burnout.
It’s critical to realise that in this case working more quickly or
harder may not solve the problem. Instead, you need to take
action to reorganise workloads, recruit additional support or
make the parameters of a task more clear.
MARCH/APRIL 2023 NATURE
Siberian Blue Robin
Blooming flowers
106
Living high up in the mountains is the dream of many, especially
those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, trading it
for peace, tranquility and the chance to be surrounded by nature.
Apart from these advantages, it has been said that highland
living contributes to a healthier life. One example is that thanks
Genting Highlands
to showcases the fresh nature’s air and best gorgeous landscape, residents are inspired
to get outside and partake in activities such as hiking, jogging or
even brisk walking.
Walking regularly will keep your heart, lungs and blood circulation
in peak performance, as well as lower blood pressure. This simple
exercise also works to reduce stress, boost immunity and even
treat depression. So, just imagine how calming it would be to
walk in nature, breathing the fresh mountain air and taking in the
breathtaking scenery all around you.
It is no surprise why the Japanese do this often and they call
it “shinrin-yoku” (forest bathing), a preventative healthcare
and healing method. Taking leisurely walks in the woods and
spending time in nature creates calming neuro-psychological
effects, which leads to the reduction of stress, anger, anxiety,
depression and insomnia.
The good news is that you don’t have to go as far as Japan to
experience this. Malaysia is home to several elevated spots where
you can enjoy nature, such as Genting Highlands, which is just an
hour’s drive away from Kuala Lumpur.
As it sits more than 1,700 metres above sea level atop the
Titiwangsa mountain range in Pahang, this famous hill resort
enjoys cool weather and clean mountain air all year round.
What’s more, due to the abundant avian life in Genting Highlands,
bird watching is a popular pastime there throughout the year.
The Rhinoceros Hornbill, Orange-breasted Trogon, Siberian Blue
Robin, Asian Glossy Starling, Bushy-crested Hornbill, Long-tailed
Sibia, Yellow-vented Bulbul, and more feathered beauties can
all be spotted here. Along with these birds, you may also come
across primates including Dusky Leaf monkeys, Long-tailed
Macaques, and Pig-tailed Macaques.
And, since Tropicana has plans to create a holistic township
in Genting Highlands called Tropicana WindCity, all of these
advantages will be available in a setting adjacent to sophisticated
conveniences surrounded by nature in its purest form.
