FAMILY STYLE
Designer Barbara Batesko spent
many happy summers at the
Shore when she was a child. To
create similar memories for her
own children, she built a home
where family and friends can
gather just steps away from the
water in Avon-by-the-Sea.
DOWN BY THE LAKE
Designer Jill Jarrett loved the
lakefront home she and her
husband purchased in Hewitt.
But the lower level needed an
update. She and her son and
business partner, Jesse, upgraded
the interiors and opened them
to beautiful water views.
editorinchief | LETTER
Spring fresh. Spring blooms. Spring to life.
All those great “spring” phrases came to mind as we planned this April-May
issue, and they made me wish the cold weather would disappear as quickly as
possible. I always feel a burst of energy and excitement when the temperature
starts to warm; some people say it’s because our serotonin levels rise with
increased sunlight. Whatever the reason, I look forward to gardening and
picnics, festivals and swimming, and even getting to work on refreshing a
home that seemed to grow a little faded during the long winter.
There’s no shortage of inspiration in the following pages. A Union County
couple chose the husband-wife team of builder Michael Mroz and interior
designer Ellie Mroz to bring their 1930s Colonial-style home into the 21st
century while respecting its roots (“History Revisited,” page 36).
Designer Barbara Batesko chose a different path when she and her husband
purchased an Avon-by-the-Sea home that Hurricane Sandy had damaged
beyond repair. They demolished the old home and built a new one where she
can give their children the same memories she has of summers at the Jersey
Shore. She also uses her home as a showplace for her design business, Bee Hive
Interiors (“Family Style,” page 56).
A house on the lake in Hewitt attracted designer Jill Jarrett and her husband. They knew it
would be the perfect spot where they could enjoy the peaceful setting or gather with visiting
family members on vacation. Most of the house was in good shape, however, the basement
needed some major work. Jill and her son, Jesse, also a designer, worked their magic to update
the space and reorient views toward the water (“Down by the Lake,” page 64).
Meanwhile, Associate Editor Meg Fox spoke with four designers for details on rooms they designed
for children with results that are creative, comfortable and colorful (“Kid Zones,” page 50).
Also in this issue, you’ll find the latest designs in tables, cabinets, consoles and credenzas
(“Your Table Is Waiting” and “At Your Service,” beginning on page 18) as well as a review of a
new book detailing the work of noted architect Thomas Kligerman (“Shingle and Stone,” page
24). We’re honored to have published some projects by his former firm, Ike Kligerman Barkley.
The stories behind these projects make me think of another “spring” phrase: It’s time to list
the updates needed at home and spring into action.
William Morris
An Arts and Crafts legacy
BY REN MILLER
William Morris packed an impressive
number of creative pursuits
into his 62 years, and although
he died more than a century ago, his influence
is still felt today.
Morris, born in 1834 in the eastern English
county of Essex, was known in his day
primarily as a poet and socialist activist. Today,
he is remembered — and revered — more for
his distinctive tapestry, wallpaper, textile and
stained glass designs that came to define the
British Arts and Crafts Movement. He’s also
known for this advice: “Have nothing in your
house that you do not know to be useful or
believe to be beautiful.”
A typical textile design by William Morris
features subtly stylized leaves, vines, flowers or
all manner of fauna. The designs may appear
“busy” to modern eyes, but they held great
appeal to those who were tiring of the heavy
ornamentation of Victorian designs.
In addition to disliking Victorian designs, Morris felt the Industrial
Revolution was flooding the country with low-quality, machine-made
products. He began to immerse himself in the ways and thoughts of the
Middle Ages. “Morris rejected the popular interior decorating trends
of his day,” historian Emily Snow says in a 2021 article written for
TheCollector.com, a community for scholars, classrooms and enthusiasts.
“He believed mainstream textile art and household goods strayed too
far from the design principle [that] ‘form follows function,’ which
dictates that the shape and look of an object should directly relate to its
intended use, and that designers should embrace the inherent qualities
of the materials they used instead of disguising them with excessive
ornamentation. Through research and travel to historical sites, William
Morris found that medieval craftmanship better embodied the aims of
the Arts and Crafts Movement.”
In 1861, Morris and like-minded creatives launched Morris, Marshall,
Faulkner & Co. to create medieval-inspired, handcrafted home décor.
The company’s hand-carving, stained glass, fabric and metal designs drew
praise during the International Exhibition of 1862.
Despite the company’s success, Morris wanted to restructure the
partnership in 1874, but his partners did not. They dissolved the
company, and Morris soon launched Morris & Co. with himself as the
sole owner. His work was voluminous. He is credited with producing
more than 600 designs for wallpaper, textiles and embroidery as well as
LEFT | The “Blackberry” pattern by William Morris shown
on wallpaper. From the online collection of the Brooklyn
Museum.
ABOVE | “Strawberry Thief” is one of Morris’ most popular
patterns.
150 designs for stained glass windows, three typefaces, and about 650
borders and ornamentations for books, including those printed at one of
his own companies, Kelmcott Press.
For his textile designs at Morris & Co., he insisted on using good
quality raw materials, almost all natural dyes and hand processing, often
reviving techniques that had become obsolete during the Industrial
Revolution. Some of his textiles were machine made, including intricate,
double-woven fabrics in which two sets of warps and wefts are interlinked
to create complex gradations of color and texture. For this reason and
more, Morris aficionados say his designs need to be seen in person to
appreciate the rich colors and textures.
“The philosophies and aesthetics of William Morris and the Arts and
Crafts Movement quickly gained popularity throughout Europe and the
United States through the start of the twentieth century,” Snow says.
“While the rise of Modernism ultimately surpassed the Arts and Crafts
movement in mainstream popularity, interior designers recognize its vital
influence today.”
After the founder’s death in 1896, Morris & Co. remained in business
until closing in 1940. The company’s designs are still sold today under
license to Sanderson & Sons and Liberty of London. Original Morris
designs, as well as imitations, are available in everything from fabric and
wallpaper to furniture, decorative pillows and notecards. DNJ
SHINGLE AND STONE:
THOMAS KLIGERMAN HOUSES
Reflecting and reimagining American architecture
REVIEW BY REN MILLER
The split and secondary gables on the entrance façade extend the traditional shingle-style
vocabulary while the deeply recessed windows and boldly shaped chimneys allude to the
monumental forms of the Southwest.
Thomas Kligerman spent his early years in the midst of cedar-shingleclad
homes in New England. When he was 14, however, his family
moved to New Mexico. Not only did the landscape change, but so
did the homes, constructed of stacked stone and mud bricks with thick walls and
rounded forms.
It was an early lesson for a boy who grew up to become a renowned architect.
When Kligerman graduated from the Yale School of Architecture in the
1980s, he knew exactly what he wanted to do professionally. “I wanted
to be an American architect designing American architecture. But what
exactly did that mean,” he says in his new book, Shingle and Stone, which
he wrote with Mitchell Owens (2022, Monacelli Press, $75). “The search
for an answer has been my quest of the past forty years.”
Those two examples of architecture from his childhood helped him
to realize that, as people arrived from distant lands, America became a
melting pot of styles that were familiar to them yet had to be adapted
to meet the needs of their new lives in a new country. “As the young
country prospered, expanded, and flourished, the possibilities for what they
could build for themselves expanded as well … [The resulting styles] have
inspired me to reinvent, again, to be inspired by the vocabularies of the
past, yet reshaped and reconfigured to express my own language of form.”
……
The shingle-style homes of Kligerman’s youth, many dating to the nineteenth
century, “had a three-dimensional escapist quality, yet however
inventive they were aesthetically, they always came across as simple and
unpretentious, wrapped with porches for lounging and distinguished with
towers for viewing,” he says in Shingle and Stone, which features photographs,
sketches and floor plans for 13 homes from around the country.
“At their best, shingle style houses are the architectural equivalent of a
soulmate: comforting, dependable, and emotionally supportive.”
In New Mexico, meanwhile, he learned more than just about structure,
including the effect of sunlight on buildings. “Sunlight in the American
desert is strong, even relentless with few natural interruptions across the
desert mesas and canyons,” he says. “Sunlight on the East Coast is more
multidimensional, especially at the seashore, where it is reflected by the
ocean, softened by dunes, and diffused by the moist air ... Thanks to sunlight,
something as seemingly insignificant as the depth of a window can
become a powerful element in the dimensionality of a building, as shadows
are cast, lengthening throughout the day until they disappear altogether,
only to begin again the next morning. It is a form of alchemy, of magic.”
stylenewjersey | GOOD READS
Kligerman’s understanding and interpretation
of the style is always evolving. He says
he’s always searching for “ways to subvert it,
to give it renewed freshness, to do something
unexpected — and most of all, to create something
interesting.” Accordingly, chimneys may
become triangular rather than rectangular,
window and door openings can be dramatically
recessed, walls that used to be straight
might flare out, corners may be chamfered,
overhangs may swoop up and front doors are
largely hidden from view “to maximize engagement
and mystery.”
Today, Kligerman is continuing a characteristic
he respects in architects who preceded
him, including Sir John Soane and Sir Edwin
Lutyens. These British architects “worked
within a vocabulary — namely classicism —
and taught it new things, unconventional
things. I can only imagine what their more
hidebound contemporaries must have thought
when they saw those two men, working a
century apart from one another, exploring
what was possible,” he says. “They made
architecture sing.” Those and architects like
them, he adds, remain a source of inspiration
today “not because they did the right thing,
the correct thing; it is because they dared to
experiment and convinced clients to take that
journey with them.”
In his own way, this book demonstrates that
Thomas Kligerman has joined their ranks. DNJ
The owners of this stately 1930s Colonial-style home knew they
had a gem on their hands. Its charm and character were apparent;
they didn’t want to change that. They did, however, want to bring
the home more in line with their modern lives in a way that honored
its provenance. To do that, they brought in Michael Mroz of Michael
Robert Construction and Ellie Mroz of Ellie Mroz Design, both based
History Revisited
In Union County, an early-20th-century home
gets a respectful update
INTERVIEW BY MARIROSE KRALL
BUILT BY MICHAEL ROBERT CONSTRUCTION
DESIGN BY ELLIE MROZ DESIGN
BEFORE
“The existing house had incredible bones and an elegant exterior,” builder Michael Mroz says.
“We did our best to pay homage to the roots of this home while giving it a fresh take.”
style home built in the 1930s. The original structure was approximately
4,000 square feet. We added a second floor above the left wing (visible
on the front façade) for a guest bedroom and bathroom. We expanded
the family room and primary suite at the back of the house, and we
extended the garage. Our additions expanded the home by roughly
1,000 square feet.
DNJ: What are the hallmarks of Colonial style?
MM: Colonial style embraces balance, symmetry and simple, clean
geometric lines. The rectangular shape and centered front door are also
elements of this style, as well as the gabled roof, symmetrical windows
and neutral color scheme. Respecting the home’s history while updating
and modernizing it was a guiding principle throughout the project.
DNJ: How did you accomplish that?
MM: It was important for us to keep true to the house’s roots and highlight
the beautiful features it already had, such as the contrast and texture of
the original stone façade. We painstakingly preserved the natural stone
and kept the symmetrical design of the exterior while enlarging all of
the windows to maximize light. We used white and black for accents
stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
BEFORE
The previously enclosed patio (above) was renovated to
create an open-air, yet sheltered, gathering space (left).
The addition at the back of the home (opposite) features
an abundance of large windows.
and simple cream plaster for the exterior additions to merge streamlined
modern elements with classic century-old design.
DNJ: What changes did you make to the interior?
MM: The preexisting large rooms didn’t connect together or flow
for modern living, so we redesigned the spaces to make them more
purposeful and to maximize functionality. For example, we split the
existing large and narrow living room into a sitting area and a bar to
create a multipurpose, connected entertaining area. In the kitchen, we
added a wall behind the refrigerator to create a butler’s pantry, making
space for storage and a family workstation. Incorporating simple arched
openings helps maintain connectivity and flow between rooms while
respecting the period’s architectural style.
DNJ: Are the arched interior doorways refl ective of Colonial style?
MM: Arched doorways would often be found in public spaces, such as
dining and living rooms, in original Colonial homes. In this home, the
arches were designed and constructed to carry out that style and also act
as a bridge to our clients’ modern aesthetic. These arches not only add
character and emphasize the flow of the home, they also echo its sleek
aesthetic. We love taking architectural features of historical significance
(arches date back to Roman versions that line the Colosseum!) and
making them new again.
DNJ: How else did you bridge gap between classic and modern?
MM: We were tasked with taking a nearly century-old home and merging
it with the clients’ sleek, urban aesthetic. We did this by selecting
materials — for example, painted brick walls in the mudroom — that
pay homage to classic elements while bringing a fresh aesthetic to the
home. Symmetry was a guiding principle in the home as originally built,
and we used this principle as our guide in the renovation. The original
staircase was located toward the back of the house. We relocated it to the
center to echo the symmetry of the exterior. The new, dramatic center
staircase is both functional and sculptural, and it offers views of the twoin
the dining room the homeowners’ existing table and chairs lean traditional, while
the new steel-and-glass cabinets add a modern touch.
The backsplash and countertops in the kitchen are clad in honed white quartzite. The
renovation involved adding a wall to the kitchen to create a butler’s pantry.
A small workspace fits snugly at one end of the butler’s pantry.
The staircase was relocated from the back of the house to the center.
story breakfast nook window tower. This resulted in a light-filled home
grounded by connectivity to nature, whether the clients are inside or in
one of the several outdoor spaces.
……
DNJ: What interior design style did the homeowners want?
ELLIE MROZ: The clients were looking for a clean but classic aesthetic.
They fell in love with the original home’s bones, but their personal style
is much more contemporary. They came to us for our timeless style, and
we integrated their love of clean lines, simplicity, subtle contrast and art.
The painted bricks on the wall of the mudroom are new but create the appearance of
vintage traditional architecture.
Ellie Mroz added a glass-paned divider to create a bar area at one end of the long, narrow
living room. “I wanted the spaces to feel separate but also have the ability for those in the
separate areas to interact,” she says.
Large light fixtures occupy the vertical space in the window tower breakfast nook. “We
selected the lanterns to add a little whimsy to the beautiful, clean-lined kitchen. The fabric
on each is unique. Some are sisal; others are cotton, silk and cashmere. All are hand-tied
to the bamboo frames. The organic materials tie in perfectly to the materials seen in the
kitchen and throughout the home.”
stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
DNJ: How did you create that aesthetic with the furnishings selected?
EM: To reflect the homeowners’ classic yet contemporary style, we chose
pieces that felt modern and used them alongside more timeless elements.
In the dining room, for example, we used the clients’ existing table and
chairs which leaned more traditional — very in line with their last home
— and mixed in the more modern, extra-tall, steel-and-glass-doored,
arch-top cabinets. (Steel and glass are a theme that is echoed in other
parts of the home.)
DNJ: How does the interior design complement the home’s architectural style?
EM: We wanted to highlight the home’s unique high ceilings (9 feet, 4
inches on the first floor and 8 feet 4 inches on the second floor). That’s very
rare in a house originally built in the 1930s, so we designed cabinetry and
millwork that would showcase them. We incorporated arched openings,
which were often seen in Colonial-style homes of this period as well.
The finishes we helped the clients select are also in line with the home’s
architecture. We aimed for natural materials everywhere we could — lots
of wood, stone, beautiful metal finishes — all classic treatments applied
in new and sometimes unexpected ways. DNJ
Lauren and Michael Sorrentino (of “Jersey Shore”
reality TV fame) put their trust in designer Vanessa
Antonelli to work her magic designing a nursery and
playroom for son Romeo in their Holmdel home.
“They wanted both spaces to feel modern and sophisticated,
embrace the beautiful tall ceilings in each room and be able to
transition into the next phase of life,” says Antonelli, owner
of Manalapan-based Vanessa Antonelli Designs. “It was
important that the rooms were different from one another
but still feel like they belonged in the same house.”
In the nursery, the crib and dresser were refinished in
Rooms for Children | SHOWCASE
The fun and whimsical playroom can also function as a guest room thanks to the comforts of a velvet-upholstered mini sofa and built-in bed tucked between two house-shaped storage
units. Says Antonelli: “I designed the wallpaper to create the feel of a playful summer drizzle and started it at the top of the ceiling to truly give the rain-down effect.”
custom silver and gold metallic paint by Micalizzi Furniture Restoration
in Englishtown. Lucite and solid brass drawer knobs are a stylish
finishing detail. Micalizzi also fabricated the custom window cornice.
“The interesting shape definitely made it a challenge,” Antonelli says.
Fortunately, the company “not only embraces all of my crazy ideas, they
bring them to life in the most beautiful ways.”
For the playroom (above), the designer’s goal was to make it feel
warm and cozy but also bright and airy. “I really wanted to bring
the Danish concept of hygge into the space,” Antonelli says. “That’s
where the white, blue, gray and wood palette came from with all the
different soft textiles.”
In consideration of the room’s angles and tall ceiling, “I knew it
would be perfect for built-ins that are shaped like a house,” the designer
says. It was an ideal way to bring fun and whimsy to the playroom while
also solving their storage needs. “You can never have enough storage!”
The final design incorporated a bed between the cabinets to give the
Sorrentinos the option of using the space as a guest room. “I considered
making the cabinets white, but then decided the wood tone and beautiful
wood grain would keep the room sophisticated.” DNJ
The black and white Stockholm rug in
the playroom “is a fave of ours,” Suozzo
says. “Not only does it look more
expensive than it is, but the graphic
pattern acts as a neutral and sets the
stage for layering in color and texture.”
Kelli Suozzo, founder of Bowerbird Co. and co-owner with Jenny
Glassberg of nest., a home goods furniture store, both based in
Red Bank, took on the design of a Rumson home that includes
several kids’ rooms and a playroom for the owners’ four children.
This particular bedroom — designed for a “super spunky 6-year-old”
with visions of Spider-Man, skateboarding and bouncy balls — “was
such a fun challenge,” Suozzo says. “While we love all of those things, of
course, we did not want (nor did her parents) a Spidey-themed room.”
Further talks with their young client extracted what she loved about each
of those things: Spiderman colors, the round shape of the balls and the
fun that comes from riding a skateboard.
“The primary palette is reflected in the bedding and drapery, which
also includes a fun circle motif reminiscent of bouncing balls,” Suozzo
says. “For the walls, we started with a blank slate to let the pops of color
shine, then went back and added the tonal half-wall treatment to layer in
a little something extra.”
A bonus room above the garage serves as the playroom, designed with
separate areas for their two girls and two boys to split up if they want some
privacy, Suozzo says. “Incorporating a pullout sofa for guests was important,
but with mountains of Magna-Tiles®, dinosaurs for days and a play kitchen
stocked with food, so was leaving plenty of space for creative play.” DNJ
A VACATION HOME THAT
CELEBRATES THE BLUES
PHOTOS BY PROXIMITY INTERIORS
DESIGN BY AMY FORSHEW
This Ocean City bedroom — shared by a young brother and
sister — is bold, beachy and genderless by design. “We started
with the blue patterned wallpaper, which is fun and happy,” says
designer Amy Forshew, principal and founder of Proximity Interiors in
Wayne, Pennsylvania.
“Having a large piece of art was important to break up the pattern of
the wallpaper,” Forshew adds. It also “ties all of the colors of the room
together and isn’t too juvenile so it will grow with the kids.”
“The client did not want bunk beds” in a room that was on the smaller
side, Forshew explains, but “we were able to fit two full-size beds and the
chest of drawers, which also functions as a nightstand.” Because the room
is shared by very young children, “having some floor space with a soft rug
was important,” she adds. “It gives them space to sit and play.” DNJ
“We had the pillows in mind as we pulled the room together,” designer Amy
Forshew says. “They add to the whimsy of the room,” and the custom painted
dresser is the “perfect shade of orange.”
Designer Callie Bruen took inspiration from her own two
boys when designing this playful kids’ bedroom for the
preeminent Mansion in May Designer Showhouse at Tyvan
Hill in New Vernon.
“The irony of designing this room during Covid was not lost on me,”
says Bruen, owner of Callie Bruen Interiors in New Vernon. She imagined
a bedroom filled with adventure where two young brothers could pretend
to scale Mount Everest via a climbing rock wall, impersonate pirates in a
custom-built treehouse or drift off to sleep in soothing hanging beds —
activities that would keep them happy and busy in the comfort and safety
of their own special bedroom.
To keep the space from appearing “too babyish,” Bruen used colors and
prints with staying power: a mix of classic plaid patterns in charcoal gray
complemented by sunny accents of yellow and white. DNJ
WRITTEN BY MARIROSE KRALL
PHOTOS BY TORI SIKKEMA | DESIGN BY BARBARA BATESKO
ARCHITECTURE BY RICE AND BROWN ARCHITECTS
BUILT BY NORTH END BUILDERS
Designer Barbara Batesko spent summers at the
Shore when she was a child and wanted to re-create
that experience for her own children. Her Avon-bythe-Sea
home serves as both a showhouse for her
work and a haven for her family.

Family Style
FOND CHILDHOOD MEMORIES ARE THE
INSPIRATION FOR A DESIGNER’S SHORE HOME
The original house on the site was boarded up and abandoned — a
victim of Hurriscane Sandy. Still, the location of the property,
in Avon-by-the-Sea, was appealing to Barbara Batesko, who has
a long, happy history at the Jersey Shore. “I grew up in Mantoloking
during the summers,” Batesko says. “I’m the youngest of four. As we all
got married and had children, the Shore house became a meeting place for
my extended family. Spending summers at the Shore with all the cousins
is a big part of who we are. I wanted to re-create that for my own family.”
The designer, owner of Avon-by-the-Sea-based Beehive Interiors,
demolished the existing house. Starting from scratch, she says, allowed
her to create exactly the kind of home she wanted, for both personal and

professional reasons. “When I started building, I thought ‘if I’m going
to build this house, I want to build it with as many custom finishes as
possible. I wanted the house to be something I would be proud of and
to bring potential clients here to demonstrate what I can do.’ That’s what
has happened. Dave Kinsel from North End Builders, who has built two
homes for me, often brings people here to look at the house. When I
am working with clients on their new homes, I bring them over to see
different design elements, such as shiplap, V-groove ceilings, interior
doors and cabinet hardware, and kitchen design.”
Although Batesko wanted her home to be a literal showplace, she also
desired a comfortable haven for her family and friends. “My goal is always
to make a house a home, a place where people want to hang out, where
they can feel comfortable. I want furnishings that make it special, but I
don’t want a house that can’t be enjoyed.”
Batesko clearly attained her goal. The furnished home has an elevated,
seashore-chic appeal with lots of spaces for gathering. “I wanted it to
be warm and coastal. I don’t like the term ‘nautical,’” Batesko explains.
“Coastal is light and bright and airy, comfortable and modern.”
The rooms are, indeed, bright and airy, thanks to a primarily white
palette. Touches of blue, used in moderation throughout the home, help
to create an understated seaside vibe that’s soothing but never boring.
Blue tones appear on the island stools in the kitchen and on a long
bench and throw pillows in the dining area. A showstopping Frenchblue
Lacanche range opposite the island draws the eye along the expanse
of white cabinetry. Smaller glimpses of blue appear elsewhere in the
residence; throw pillows in the attic bunk room, table lamps in the family
room and striped towels in the mudroom all provide tantalizing, if subtle,
reminders of the sea just outside the door.
58 April/May 2023

The décor’s white foundation allows the blue accents to pop; it also
ensures that the spaces have a peaceful, relaxed ambience. The abundance
of white textiles might seem counterintuitive in spaces designed for
entertaining guests of all ages, but Batesko demurs at this idea. “In today’s
market,” she says, “it’s easy to find fabrics that are really stain resistant.
You can pour a bottle of red wine or smear chocolate on them and the
stains will come out without a problem.” Batesko’s choice of sturdy fabrics
means that gatherings — and her own outlook — can be just as relaxed
as the décor. “When I go to bed, I tell guests, ‘if something bad happens,
don’t do anything, just tell me in the morning and I’ll fix it.’”
Batesko and her husband loved this house and this location so much
that they sold their primary residence in Northern New Jersey and moved
here full time. “I wanted this for my immediate family. I built this house
for the grandchildren I don’t yet have,” she says, laughing. “That was
The family room features gorgeous views of the bay. Seating is upholstered in stainresistant
fabric for worry-free entertaining.
The kitchen accommodates lots of cooks. “We are a family of chefs,” Batesko says.
designnewjersey.com 59

Abundant seating in the
kitchen ensures space for
large gatherings.
Swinging doors to
the pantry feature
a porthole-shaped
window. A custom desk
fits nicely into the niche
leading from the kitchen.
A French-blue, six-burner
Lacanche range adds
color to the expanse of
white cabinetry.

The island features
storage at both ends.
Additional storage is
located in the two pony
walls, which separate the
kitchen and family room.
The kitchen is equipped
with two sinks. This
one is in the perimeter
cabinetry, the other is in
the island.
The pantry area, used to
store china and linens, is
the most color-saturated
space in the house, but
it continues the theme
of blue tones found in
smaller doses elsewhere.

eally the driving force for me. I wanted a home where there’s plenty of
STYLISH UPGRADES AND IMPROVED INDOOR/OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS
UPLIFT A LOWER-LEVEL LIVING AREA
64 April/May 2023

WRITTEN BY MEG FOX
PHOTOS BY JESSE JARRETT
DESIGN BY JILL JARRETT, CMKBD, CAPS & JESSE JARRETT, CKBD
Relocating the kitchen and creating a more open-plan layout opened
up opportunities for a “gorgeous kitchenette featuring a wine column
and all the conveniences of a larger kitchen,” co-designer Jill Jarrett says.
The handsome bar pantry features retractable doors and a two-tone
finish: “Graphite Gray” on the exterior to coordinate with the rest of
the kitchen cabinetry and a lighter custom gray stain on the interior.
When closed (above), the bar pantry “is all business, modestly flaunting
its dashing, dark doors,” Jarrett says. “Open it and it’s party time.” Newly
installed double glass doors (at right) lead to a covered porch with
expansive lake views. The home’s main electrical panel (shown in before
photo) had to be relocated to make way for the new kitchenette.
Magnificent water views topped a long list of things
designer Jill Jarrett and her spouse loved about their new
lakefront home in Hewitt. The property also serves as a
vacation spot of sorts for their seven adult children, their grandchildren
and extended family and friends.
The lower level, however, didn’t quite measure up. “It was straight
out of 1960,” the year the house was built, recalls Jarrett, a Certified
Master Kitchen & Bath Designer and co-owner of Jarrett Design in
Emmaus, Pennsylvania. “Although Midcentury Modern can be well
done, this was not.”
BEFORE
BEFORE
BEFORE
LIVING ROOM | “The fireplace got a makeover, taking it from a dated brick façade
to a sleek, hand-finished metal-and-concrete focal point,” Jarrett says. Note the
ceiling’s structural steel beam — covered in reclaimed white oak — which now
supports the span in the open concept layout.
BEFORE | The fireplace before the renovation.
OFFICE | Replacing a door with a wall of windows transformed the home office
and redirected traffic flow to the outdoors through the main living area. “The
executive desk was designed using an exclusive door style and metal feet,” Jarrett
says. The custom wall unit and desk have a custom gray stain on walnut with a
deeper charcoal stain on the wood tops.
BEFORE | A former patio had been enclosed as an office space with French doors.
“Its original flagstone floor had flaking yellow remnants of sealers from years past
that were impossible to remove,” Jarrett says.
Among the drawbacks was the location of a tired U-shaped kitchen
that blocked lake views, a wall that separated the living space from the
kitchen and dining areas and a bathroom that sported its original pink
and brown wall tile. Access to the outdoors was also cumbersome. “The
only ways in and out were through the bedroom and office,” she says.
“This was a full gut job.”
In collaboration with Jesse Jarrett, her designer son, a Certified Kitchen
& Bath Designer, the duo set out to create an open-concept layout that
welcomed light and waterfront views. This involved removing a wall that
formerly divided the spaces. A large steel beam now supports the span. “We
wrapped the beam in reclaimed white oak for rustic warmth to complement
the crisp white board and batten on all the walls,” Jarrett notes.
66 April/May 2023

STAIRCASE | The designers stepped up the design of
the stairway to the lower level with a new stainedwood
and metal railing. Hollow slab doors were
replaced with thick five-panel designs with matte black
and white porcelain hardware.
BEFORE | A wall previously divided the living area from
the kitchen and lakefront views. The existing stairwell
was plain and uninspired.
HALLWAY | A picture light and new board-and-batten
walls up the charm factor in the hallway leading to the
bathroom and bedroom.
BEFORE
To strengthen the lower level’s connection to the outdoors and facilitate
traffic flow, the kitchen’s small window was replaced with double glass
doors that lead to a covered porch with expansive lake views. Relocating
the kitchen to the opposite side of the room against a long wall made
the most sense. It also posed one big obstacle: the home’s main electrical
panel would have to be moved, a costly and complicated process.
“I resisted this for months,” Jarrett says, trying instead to come up with
a clever way to hide the panel in the new kitchen design. Eventually, Jesse
“brought her to her senses,” she says, by designing a gorgeous kitchenette
that had all the conveniences of a larger kitchen: a wine column, induction
range, Galley workstation and more. “Somehow, relocating the panel [to
a nearby laundry/gym area] began to make a lot of sense!”
Completing the kitchenette is a handsome, functional bar pantry with
retractable doors, color-controlled lighting and adjustable shelves. “When
it is closed, it’s all business, modestly flaunting its dashing, dark doors,” she
says. “Open it and it’s party time.” Pocket doors expose two-tone cabinetry,
a soapstone countertop and plenty of room for glasses and spirits.
……
To create a sense of privacy in an adjacent office, the designers replaced
a door with a wall of windows that visually connect it to the lake, pool
and outdoor entertaining areas. “Windows were added also to another
wall that had none (not shown), creating a panoramic view from the
desk,” Jarrett says. New French doors were installed to separate the office
from the living area when desired, she adds.
designnewjersey.com 67

BEFORE
The doorway to the bedroom was enlarged to allow room for a walker or
wheelchair if needed. Space was also carved from this room to widen the
adjacent bathroom. A double closet now makes efficient use of space.
BEFORE | The bedroom formerly had a small doorway and two awkwardly
placed closets.
The bathroom was widened to accommodate aging-in-place needs
without sacrificing style, says Jarrett, a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist.
A roomy, curbless shower contains an attractive grab bar and convenient
marble bench. Double sinks were incorporated into a furniture-style
vanity made of reclaimed oak. Jarrett says: “New marble hex flooring
gives a nod to Midcentury shapes coupled with white wavy subway tiles
that keep the shower bright.”
Other improvements — such as new hardwood flooring, board-andbatten
walls and thick five-panel doors — helped to elevate the once
basic setting. And the dark bulky brick fireplace? It also received a
modern makeover with a sleek concrete and metal façade. These and
other upgrades “allowed the lower level to feel like a natural extension
of the home without the basement feel,” Jarrett says, adding, “The
increased lake views are wonderful. The space has become a favorite
place for our family and friends to gather.” DNJ
