INTRODUCTION
These reasons are all matters of practical utility. It is most emphatically
not the aim to suggest that the Scots of North East Scotland is
intrinsically ‘better’ than the Scots spoken in other areas. However,
given that the learner will be learning the north-eastern variety, there
are some points to note with this in mind.
! None of the material in the book is written in such a way as
to depict specifically the north-eastern pronunciation or,
indeed, any particular pronunciation. On the contrary, the
spelling of Scots presented in this book is intended to be as
generic as possible, and is based on that used in The Concise
English–Scots Dictionary, produced by Scottish Language
Dictionaries. Where the dictionary gives more than one
spelling for a particular word, the writer has chosen that
which he personally believes to reflect best the different
pronunciations that the word may have.
! The written Scots in this book is intended as a vehicle for
presenting and explaining the spoken language. It is not
intended to serve as a model for the learner’s own written
Scots, even if it might be possible to use it in the latter fashion.
! Learners from outside Scotland are recommended to use the
CD as the model of pronunciation to imitate. On the other
hand, learners from Scotland itself, who already have some
knowledge of how the words would be pronounced in their
own respective region, may themselves prefer to remain with
the pronunciation that they know.
! Although the aim of this book is to present a model of good
Scots, this is not necessarily the only model of good Scots. It
is not the purpose of this book to define a ‘standard’ Scots.
The first few lessons contain material which many Scottish readers may
feel to be too basic to bother with. There is a potential pitfall of which
to beware: readers ought not to assume, simply because they already
understand all of the material in a lesson, that they have a complete
grasp of it. It may be difficult for readers to convince themselves that
they have anything to learn from material that they already understand
completely. In the end, this is a matter of resolve. If readers start from
