To gaintime I answered them. The invisible rag and pillow cameto hand and I opened the window and pitched them outon to the cistern cover. As the window opened, a heavycrash came at the door. Someone had charged it withthe idea of smashing the lock. But the stout bolts I hadscrewed up some days before stopped him. That startledme, made me angry. I began to tremble and do thingshurriedly."I tossed together some loose paper, straw, packing paperand so forth, in the middle of the room, and turnedon the gas. Heavy blows began to rain upon the door. Icould not find the matches. I beat my hands on the wallwith rage. I turned down the gas again, stepped out ofthe window on the cistern cover, very softly lowered thesash, and sat down, secure and invisible, but quiveringwith anger, to watch events. They split a panel, I saw,and in another moment they had broken away the staplesof the bolts and stood in the open doorway. It was180

Behind them fluttered the oldhag of a woman from downstairs."You may imagine their astonishment to find the roomempty. One of the younger men rushed to the windowat once, flung it up and stared out. His staring eyes andthick-lipped bearded face came a foot from my face. Iwas half minded to hit his silly countenance, but I arrestedmy doubled fist. He stared right through me. Sodid the others as they joined him. The old man went andpeered under the bed, and then they all made a rush forthe cupboard. They had to argue about it at length in Yiddishand Cockney English.
