An abstract<br />

figurative artist<br />

whose artwork<br />

dances between<br />

abstraction and<br />

realism<br />

“The cont<strong>in</strong>uous flower<strong>in</strong>g of my style is <strong>the</strong> most important th<strong>in</strong>g to me; I want my work to<br />

vibrate with <strong>the</strong> same energy I walk through life with,” – Says Stirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g Caiulo is a mixed-media artist<br />

based <strong>in</strong> Melbourne. His work walks<br />

<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e l<strong>in</strong>e between abstraction and<br />

realism, often leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation out<br />

so <strong>the</strong> viewer can create <strong>the</strong>ir own story for<br />

<strong>the</strong> piece.<br />

He has been practic<strong>in</strong>g draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 2013 but started rapidly<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g a voice and <strong>the</strong><br />

techniques needed to execute<br />

his ideas <strong>in</strong> 2019 and has<br />

been all <strong>in</strong> ever s<strong>in</strong>ce.<br />

In 2012 Stirl<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his hometown<br />

Perth, Australia, when a<br />

model<strong>in</strong>g scout from an Italian<br />

agency (Crew)<br />

met with his local representation (Chadwick)<br />

for prospects. Stirl<strong>in</strong>g was unable to attend<br />

<strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g but a few weeks later received a<br />

call ask<strong>in</strong>g if he wanted to take a plane to Italy<br />

and participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Milan Fashion Week.<br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g accepted immediately and, upon arrival,<br />

experienced a very different way of life to<br />

his hometown. He was soak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> new<br />

and unfamiliar cultures while travel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Europe for work and meet<strong>in</strong>g some<br />

of <strong>the</strong> top designers and creators <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world, admir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir attention to<br />

detail for <strong>the</strong>ir craft.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g his downtime <strong>in</strong> a small<br />

apartment <strong>in</strong> Milan, one of his friends<br />

would often draw to pass <strong>the</strong> time. Stirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was <strong>in</strong>spired and, <strong>in</strong> turn, bought his own<br />

sketch pad. While sketch<strong>in</strong>g people down<br />

by <strong>the</strong> canals of Milan, hours of his time would<br />

go miss<strong>in</strong>g, and this would be <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g would fall <strong>in</strong> love with. Practic<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for years to chase <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g of ‘flow’<br />

while creat<strong>in</strong>g, Stirl<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued to<br />

resist tak<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g seriously,<br />

as he couldn’t imag<strong>in</strong>e art as<br />

a career for himself. Seven<br />

years later, <strong>the</strong> call for him to<br />

s<strong>in</strong>k more time <strong>in</strong>to art became<br />

louder and harder to ignore.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> thought struck him-<br />

‘how far could he take a piece of<br />

art?’ Stirl<strong>in</strong>g sunk three months<br />

of time <strong>in</strong>to one draw<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> old ceil<strong>in</strong>g to his work was<br />

now blown open. Now how far<br />

could he take th<strong>in</strong>gs? And <strong>in</strong><br />

what direction? Stirl<strong>in</strong>g started to<br />

understand and respect art as<br />

his means of communication.<br />

“I try to “f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>e between <strong>the</strong><br />

earth and sky.” says<br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g Caiulo.<br />

What’s <strong>the</strong> difference between a fast stroke or a<br />

slow one? Be<strong>in</strong>g thoughtless while creat<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g meticulous? He’s always liked misdirection<br />

<strong>in</strong> art from films like Refn’s Drive, <strong>the</strong> way a<br />

Haruki Murakami novel unexpectedly guides<br />

an audience <strong>in</strong>to a surreal world, and <strong>the</strong> way<br />

rappers like Lupe Fiasco spontaneously create<br />

lyrics as a freestyle.<br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g wanted to f<strong>in</strong>d a balance between <strong>the</strong><br />

two sides of himself: <strong>the</strong> expressive, <strong>the</strong> one<br />

who wanted to travel and soak <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r who wanted to stay <strong>in</strong> his apartment<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>d his flow. This is why he likes his work<br />

to dance between abstraction and realism,<br />

or as he calls it, ‘f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e between <strong>the</strong><br />

earth and sky.’<br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g Caiulo has been a f<strong>in</strong>alist for <strong>the</strong> last<br />

2 years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lester Prize, a major Australian<br />

portrait prize. He is now work<strong>in</strong>g on writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and illustrat<strong>in</strong>g his own graphic novel while<br />

he cont<strong>in</strong>ues to take on commissions for oil<br />

portraits and large-scale murals.<br />
