Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exhibition,<br />

Bollywood Superstars: A Short Story<br />

of Indian C<strong>in</strong>ema, opens its doors<br />

Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exhibition, Bollywood<br />

Superstars: A Short Story of Indian<br />

C<strong>in</strong>ema, was <strong>in</strong>augurated by H.E.<br />

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman<br />

of Louvre Abu Dhabi. The exhibition opened<br />

on 24 January and is runn<strong>in</strong>g until 4 June<br />

<strong>2023</strong>. Organised <strong>in</strong> partnership with Musée<br />

du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac and France<br />

Muséums, it showcases <strong>the</strong> depth and richness<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Indian sub-cont<strong>in</strong>ent’s art and civilization<br />

through its long tradition of image mak<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> diversity of <strong>the</strong> Indian filmmak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu<br />

Dhabi, commented: “Bollywood Superstars<br />

demonstrates our endur<strong>in</strong>g commitment to<br />

showcase <strong>the</strong> wealth of cultures that def<strong>in</strong>e<br />

so much of life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Arab Emirates.<br />

Our staff and partners have worked tirelessly to<br />

present toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> most ambitious collection<br />

of artworks with movie projection which are at<br />

<strong>the</strong> heart of Indian society and popular culture.<br />

We hope that, by offer<strong>in</strong>g a glimpse <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

subcont<strong>in</strong>ent’s rich and diverse filmmak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

history, visitors can better understand <strong>the</strong><br />

myriad of our shared roots, common values<br />

and cultural connections.”<br />

On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> exhibition’s curators,<br />

Julien Rousseau and Hélène Kessous, said:<br />

“This exhibition is a tribute to Bollywood and<br />

can be enjoyed by both Indian c<strong>in</strong>ema fans<br />

and <strong>the</strong> wider public. We hope that it portrays<br />

<strong>the</strong> full richness of Asian traditions and tells<br />

<strong>the</strong> stories that led to <strong>the</strong> birth of this c<strong>in</strong>ema.<br />

The exhibition celebrates Bollywood superstars<br />

who are adored by <strong>the</strong>ir fans <strong>in</strong> India <strong>in</strong> a way<br />

that is rarely seen elsewhere <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.”<br />

Through more than 80 artworks <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

photographs, textiles, graphic arts, costumes<br />

and over 30 film extracts, <strong>the</strong> exhibition explores<br />

<strong>the</strong> rich history of <strong>the</strong> Indian c<strong>in</strong>ema from its<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 19th century up to <strong>the</strong><br />

present. The artworks come from <strong>the</strong> collections<br />

of Louvre Abu Dhabi, Musée du Quai Branly<br />

– Jacques Chirac, Musée de l’Armée, Musée<br />

national des arts asiatiques – Guimet, al-Sabah<br />

Collection, Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation<br />

and Priya Paul Collection.<br />

A range of educational activities will be<br />

available for visitors of all ages. These <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

an Express Tour of <strong>the</strong> exhibition; Make and Play<br />

activities where families can explore different<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds of storytell<strong>in</strong>g techniques <strong>in</strong>spired by<br />

Bollywood film posters; and a Young Visitor’s<br />

Guide, offer<strong>in</strong>g young ones <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

learn about Indian c<strong>in</strong>ema.<br />
