The Sheikh Zayed Festival welcomes 

2023 by breaking four Guinness World Records 

Over one million people from the UAE 

and abroad attended the Sheikh 

Zayed Festival on New Year’s Eve 

to greet the New Year of 2023 with 

the greatest fireworks display and drone show, 

which broke four Guinness World Records. 

The impressive drone and fireworks displays, 

which took place for the first time in the area 

and were recorded by the Guinness World 

Records, attracted a large crowd of spectators 

to the Festival grounds. 

More than 3,000 drones flew up the sky 

of Al Wathba in different colours of light and 

formations to greet the crowd at the conclusion 

of the thrilling show that successfully broke three 

Guinness World Records. The largest fireworks 

display lasted for more than 40 minutes amid 

an atmosphere of joy. 

Al-Waleed Osman, the adjudicator for the 

Guinness World Records, commented on this 

wonderful achievement and confirmed that the 

Sheikh Zayed Festival managed to break four 

records throughout the event, three of which 

were for the fireworks display and a new record 

was established by the magnificent drone show. 

In addition to the Multirotor/drone, he added, 

the largest formation of a Quick Response (QR) 

code was made by drones in 30 seconds, as 

were the majority of pinwheel fireworks, most 

repeated firework images, and most girandola 

fireworks. 

The Festival region was transformed into a 

major international art destination as a result 

of the entertaining international folklore and 

cultural performances that were part of the 

participating nations’ new year festivities and 

wandered the Festival grounds and pavilions. 

Through the cultural dance performances 

and live music performances on the numerous 

pavilion stages located throughout the grounds, 

visitors were also exposed to the art and culture 

of these nations. 

The public expressed their satisfaction with 

the various exhibits and performances, including 

the pavilions for Emirati Civilizations and the 

Heritage Village, as well as the Fun Fair City, 

Children’s City, Art District, Go-Kart races, Crazy 

Car, Glow and Flower Garden, Selfie Street, 

Dessert Museum, and many others.

Ekta’23 sets the bars high 

with immersive art exhibition 

celebrating the 74th Republic 

Day of India 

Ekta 2023 was a ground-breaking, one-of-a-kind digital art 

extravaganza held at the Theatre of Digital Art in Madinat 

Jumeirah on January 26th, 2023. This immersive experience 

brought together a diverse group of individuals, including industry 

leaders, dignitaries, and veterans, to celebrate unity and diversity through 

the power of art. Not only does it support the creative economy, but 

it also serves as a platform for promoting creativity and innovation by 

allowing attendees to network and learn from the experts in their field 

leaving everyone in awe of the power and the beauty of digital art. 

The event was presented by Wasaya Investments and supported 

by Danube Properties, Rayna Tours, Barakat, Filli Cafe, 25 Degrees 

North restaurant, Graphics Hub, Focus Display Advertising, Veesham 

Printing Press, Melodica Music and Dance Center, our emcees Waleed 

and Bassam, Artlab, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, 

Indian Women in Dubai, the ACKAF Association, the Al Matiya Club, 

My Govindas, Experiential Marketing Products, Etisalat Yellow Pages, 

Sterling Perfumes, The Face Shop, Digitally Beyond Image, Magzoid

by a number of royal dignitaries including H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin 

Abdulla Almulla, H.E. Juma Al Madani, H.E. Munira Albalooshi, Khalil 

Abdul Wahid, Faisal Abdul Qader among many others. The event 

featured an awe-inspiring collection of immersive gallery displays of 

six selected UAE-based artists, Varsha Sureka, Aakanksha Kshatriya, 


Stanislava Burianek, Afshan Nawaz Khan, Malini Karani, Anni Teriani, 

in a stunning 360-degree display. 

Speaking about the event, artist Varsha Sureka said “It was an 

incredible chance to connect with imaginative individuals, such as 

artists and performers. A one-of-a-kind experience displaying my artwork 

in a fully-immersive setting. It was a dreamlike sensation witnessing 

my creations on such grand screens! Absolutely breath-taking. The 

organizers and the team were amazing, everything was well organized, 

and they created a great environment for all the artists and performers 

to showcase their work.” 

The collective display was an unparalleled visual feast, showcasing the 

artists’ unique perspectives and styles in a way that was both thoughtprovoking 

and emotionally resonant. The event not only showcased 

the stunning artwork from some of the most talented artists in the 

industry, but it also featured a series of spellbinding performances 

that elevated the experience to new heights. From the grace and 

poise of the ballerinas from the Melodica Music and Dance Center to 

the mesmerizing Kathak performances led by the renowned Vaishali 

Mhaisalkar, to the high-energy and dynamic routines of the Just Dance 

Studio, every performance was a true masterpiece. 

To top it off, the event featured an unforgettable violin performance 

by the virtuosic Kristina Borbova, whose masterful playing left the 

audience in a state of pure euphoria. These diverse and captivating 

performances perfectly complemented the amazing artwork on display 

and truly supported the celebration of unity and diversity that Ekta 

2023 aimed to promote, making it an unforgettable experience for all 

who attended. 

“The digital art exhibition was truly impressive. The use of technology 

to enhance the pieces was really well done, and it was great to see 

the artists’ unique visions come to life in a digital format,” said one of

Ekta 2023 was a resounding success, drawing 

in performing and visual art lovers from far and 

wide, captivated by the immersive digital art 

displays and the mesmerizing performances. The 

attendees were able to fully immerse themselves 

in the art and performances, experiencing them 

uniquely and interactively. The artists were on 

hand to provide an intimate look into their creative 

processes, answering questions and providing 

insights that deepened the understanding of 

their works. 

“Artoze is ecstatic with the success of Ekta 

2023, it exceeded all expectations and we are 

eternally grateful for the support of our attendees, 

artists, performers, and sponsors. This event 

was a triumph and a testament to the power of 

art to connect and inspire people. Artoze looks

Valentine’s Day 

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is 

celebrated annually on February 14th. 

It is a day when people express their 

love and affection for one another, 

often through the exchange of cards, flowers, 

and gifts. The holiday is named after Saint 

Valentine, a Christian martyr who was imprisoned 

for secretly performing marriage ceremonies 

for couples in ancient Rome at a time when 

marriage was forbidden. 

The origins of Valentine’s Day are not clear, but 

it is believed to have originated as a Christian 

holiday honouring Saint Valentine. According 

to one legend, Valentine was a priest who 

served during the third century in Rome. He 

was imprisoned for secretly marrying couples 

in defiance of the emperor’s prohibition on 

marriage. While in prison, Valentine is said 

to have written letters to the jailer’s daughter, 

signing them “from your Valentine.” Another 

legend suggests that Valentine was a bishop 

who was imprisoned and tortured for secretly 

performing marriage ceremonies for couples. 

Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day 

has become a widely celebrated holiday in 

modern times, particularly in Western cultures. 

On this day, people exchange gifts, cards, 

and flowers with their loved ones as a symbol 

of their affection and devotion. Some popular 

gifts that are given on Valentine’s Day include 

chocolates, jewellery, and bouquets of flowers. 

In addition to gift-giving, many people celebrate 

Valentine’s Day by going out to dinner at a 

nice restaurant, attending a romantic movie 

or concert, or simply spending quality time 

with their loved ones. Some people may even 

choose to take a romantic vacation or getaway 

to celebrate the holiday. 

Valentine’s Day is not just a holiday for romantic 

couples. It is a day when people show their love 

and appreciation for their friends and family 

members as well. Many people exchange 

cards, gifts, and messages with their friends 

and family members on Valentine’s Day to show 

them how much they care. 

While Valentine’s Day is a day of love and 

celebration, it can also be a time of pressure and 

high expectations. Some people feel pressure 

to find the perfect gift or to plan a special 

evening for their loved ones. It is important 

to remember that the most important thing 

is the thought and effort that goes into the 

celebration, not the material things.

The Jameel Arts Centre show takes you 

on a journey into humanity’s relationship with water 

It is a seemingly straightforward subject, 

but one that An Ocean in Every Drop, the 

current international group show at Jameel 

Arts Centre, tackles in-depth and in a variety 

of ways. The voyage to Jameel Arts Centre 

shows that water is far more vital than we 

realize, despite the fact that there may not 

be a simple solution. It is a timeless, sacred, 

and essential component that has shaped and 

supported humanity in a variety of fields and 

dimensions that interact. 

Through the viewpoints of artists and intellectuals 

from a wide range of historical periods, the 

exhibition invites viewers to reevaluate their 

relationships with water, re-enchanting and 

recontextualizing the value of a substance that 

many people take for granted. 

Rumi, a Persian poet who lived in the 13th 

century, is quoted as saying, “You are not a drop 

in the ocean.” The phrase “You are an ocean in 

every drop” refers to both the amount of water in 

the globe and the potential for abundance within 

each person. In this exhibition, 15 indigenous 

artists from 14 different countries investigate 

the complex existence of water in all its forms. 

“This notion of water has been incredibly 

important to us since the beginning,” said 

Director of Art Jameel, the creative enterprise 

that manages the centre, Antonia Carver. 

With the UAE hosting Cop28 in November, 

the expo comes at a good moment. The event 

builds on the one held in Egypt the year before 

by focusing on concerns related to the global 

climate catastrophe, such as contaminated 

oceans and a lack of clean water in many 

regions of the world. 

The show investigates water through the 

lenses of the environment, mythology, spirituality, 

lived experiences, and folk traditions through 

already-existing and newly-commissioned 

works. Visitors reinterpret water as a crucial 

component that ties people to one another 

and to the rest of the globe. It is reframed 

as an unstoppable force that has influenced 

history, society, language, and interpersonal 

and spiritual relationships. 

Carver continues, “The issue of water also 

pertains to sustainability and the environment. 

“The exhibition has arrived at a very suitable 

time as people worldwide consider our relationship 

with water. Additionally, this exhibition sets those 

concepts of water in a very large geographic 

and thoroughly historical timeline. 

During her research on water sites and the 

legends they contain, Palestinian artist Jumana 

Emil Abboud collected folktales from local 

communities in her home country. These tales 

served as the inspiration for her evocative and 

captivating series of drawings and paintings. 

Thao Nguyen Phan, a Vietnamese visual 

artist, created the Perpetual Brightness series 

of paintings using traditional lacquer painting 

methods on silk that are displayed behind a 

folding screen. The artwork shows a fractured 

map of Vietnam’s Mekong River, often known 

as the Nine Dragons River.

The scope of the show includes a variety

addition to a historical timeline. This diversity of 

time and space, which includes old manuscripts, 

movies, paintings, and sculptures, enables 

visitors to consider water from a variety of 

perspectives, including its role in both our 

past and our present. Jameel Arts Center in 

Dubai is currently hosting An Ocean in Every 

Drop through April 2.

door to the creative realm for Elli. She started 

creating with a love and zeal for the visual 

arts. Elli attended Savannah College of Art and 

Design and later transferred to the University 

of Georgia, where she received her BFA. Since 

then, she has maintained a successful career 

as a professional artist for over 24 years and 

sold over 10,000 pieces of original art. Elli is 

married to artist John Milan and together they 

have raised four artist children. Their family

2023: AI and NFTs are expected 

to keep reinventing art 

Christie’s recorded a 96% fall in NFT sales over the course of the year, despite the 

fact that the entry of artists like Takashi Murakami into the NFT field has given the 

space some much-needed respectability. 

Little in 2022 split the art world as much as

Since this power, many people in the arts 

and cultural fields are debating where the 

boundary should be drawn. When do we cease 

appreciating the distance between the artist 

and the brush as well as the distance between 

the brush and the canvas? When is the physical 

media no longer necessary? Where does it all 

end, exactly? The modern question is, “What 

is creativity?,” as Murakami noted. 

Automation has long been a problem in many 

other industries. The argument regarding the 

upcoming waves of automation, particularly in 

the creative realms, may be led by AI art as 

the Fourth Industrial Revolution progresses. 

Perhaps there will be a larger push from 

artists toward the decentralising forces of NFTs if 

monopolies like Meta attempt to enforce control 

over these digital spaces, lest the constraints 

of algorithms created to further commercial 

interests stifle their creativity. What function does 

art perform in this result, and what can creators 

do to safeguard virtual cultural spaces in a 

society where the attention span of consumers 

is a commodity to be sold to advertisers? 

The topic will undoubtedly change, and given 

the speed at which technology is evolving, it 

is hard to accurately forecast how events will 

turn out. But one thing is certain: the union of 

art and technology will undoubtedly continue 

to be a balancing act of promise and issues 

for some.

Victor Mabet 

“Wait, is it a photograph or an actual drawing?” That is the question I hope those 

who watch my artwork for the first time ask themselves,” says Victor. 

Víctor Mabet is a Spanish self-taught 

hyper-realistic artist. He started 

drawing in 2019. His portraits are done 

with graphite and charcoal on paper. 

“Wait, is it a photograph or an actual drawing?” 

that is the question I hope those who watch 

my artwork for the first time ask themselves,” 

says Victor. 

Victor always pursued to convey onto paper 

what a camera would capture. 

“It’s mind-blowing the results you can achieve 

by simply creating some patches with charcoal 

and adding details with pencils,” says Victor. 

Victor’s passion for drawing has accompanied 

him since he was a child. It was not until 2019 

that Victor’s interest in drawing portraits arose. 

“At present, I’m seeking to fine-tune my 

technique,” says Victor. 

The key element in his artworks is getting 

a gaze that connects with and transmits to 

the beholder without giving up on blurs and 

textures, which all in all breathe life into a portrait. 

His technique is about creating base layers 

with charcoal powder and using graphite pencils

Dubai soon to be home to a series of 

amazing art installations 

The Dubai Public Art Strategy was 

launched on January 13, with a Dh2 

million initial commission and an open 

request for an art installation in a public 

park in the Al Hudaiba district. Later this year, 

the project will be presented. 

The Strategy aligns with His Highness 

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, 

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE 

and Ruler of Dubai, who aspires to make Dubai 

the global creative economy’s capital by 2026. 

The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai 

Culture) has recently started implementing the 

Strategy, which aims to convert the emirate 

into an open, accessible, and global art gallery 

while also promoting the emirate’s creative 

economy. 

Dubai is known for its grand and ambitious 

projects, and this includes a series of art 

installations. Some examples include the Dubai 

Creek Harbour, which features a number of 

large-scale sculptures and public artworks, as 

well as the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) 

Walk, which showcases a collection of outdoor 

art pieces. Additionally, the Dubai Mall has an 

extensive collection of contemporary art and 

sculptures on display throughout the shopping 

center. These are just a few examples of the 

many art installations that can be found in Dubai. 

Dubai Public Art, a government organisation 

in the United Arab Emirates, aims to turn the 

emirate into a public, open, and international 

gallery of art so that both locals and visitors 

can enjoy outstanding works of art. 

This is done in an effort to enhance the local 

aesthetic and cultural landscape. Together with 

Tashkeel, Art Dubai, Al Serkal Avenue, Jameel 

Arts Centre, and Akaas Visual Arts, the new 

initiative will feature a number of distinctive, 

site-specific artworks that will be dispersed 

throughout Dubai. 

UAE-based artists can now submit proposals 

for the first commission being organised by 

Dubai Culture. It will be unveiled in late 2023 

in Al Hudaiba, one of Dubai’s most stunning 

public gardens, which looks out over the Etihad 

Museum and Union House. 

The application date is February 13, 2023. 

Each of the shortlisted artists will get a sum 

of US$5,000 to produce a thorough proposal 

and a prototype of their works when the 16th 

edition of Art Dubai is revealed from March 

1 to 5.

Alessandra Roccasalva, an Italian 

graphic designer and illustrator, 

lives and works in Marina di Ragusa, 

Sicily. Alessandra graduated from the 

Academy of Fine Arts in Catania, specializing 

in painting and cultural heritage. She started 

making collages for fun, mostly drawing 

inspiration from works of art, and with millions 

of dots of “Bézier,” she cut out, isolate, and 

piece together other beautiful nature. She 

believes that images, due to their ambiguity 

and immense range of meanings, are a much 

more accurate means of breaking down and

since 2013 but started rapidly 

developing a voice and the 

techniques needed to execute 

his ideas in 2019 and has 

been all in ever since. 

In 2012 Stirling was 

living in his hometown 

Perth, Australia, when a 

modeling scout from an Italian 

agency (Crew) 

met with his local representation (Chadwick) 

for prospects. Stirling was unable to attend 

the meeting but a few weeks later received a 

call asking if he wanted to take a plane to Italy 

and participate in the Milan Fashion Week. 

Stirling accepted immediately and, upon arrival, 

experienced a very different way of life to 

his hometown. He was soaking in new 

and unfamiliar cultures while traveling 

Europe for work and meeting some 

of the top designers and creators in 

the world, admiring their attention to 

detail for their craft. 

During his downtime in a small 

apartment in Milan, one of his friends 

would often draw to pass the time. Stirling 

was inspired and, in turn, bought his own 

sketch pad. While sketching people down 

by the canals of Milan, hours of his time would 

go missing, and this would be the feeling 

Stirling would fall in love with. Practicing 

for years to chase the feeling of ‘flow’ 

while creating, Stirling continued to 

resist taking anything seriously, 

as he couldn’t imagine art as 

a career for himself. Seven 

years later, the call for him to 

sink more time into art became 

louder and harder to ignore. 

Then the thought struck him- 

‘how far could he take a piece of 

art?’ Stirling sunk three months 

of time into one drawing, and 

the old ceiling to his work was 

now blown open. Now how far 

could he take things? And in 

what direction? Stirling started to 

understand and respect art as 

his means of communication. 

“I try to “find the 

line between the 

earth and sky.” says 

Stirling Caiulo. 

What’s the difference between a fast stroke or a 

slow one? Being thoughtless while creating or 

being meticulous? He’s always liked misdirection 

in art from films like Refn’s Drive, the way a 

Haruki Murakami novel unexpectedly guides 

an audience into a surreal world, and the way 

rappers like Lupe Fiasco spontaneously create 

lyrics as a freestyle. 

Stirling wanted to find a balance between the 

two sides of himself: the expressive, the one 

who wanted to travel and soak in the world, and 

the other who wanted to stay in his apartment 

and find his flow. This is why he likes his work 

to dance between abstraction and realism, 

or as he calls it, ‘finding the line between the 

earth and sky.’ 

Stirling Caiulo has been a finalist for the last 

2 years in the Lester Prize, a major Australian 

portrait prize. He is now working on writing 

and illustrating his own graphic novel while 

he continues to take on commissions for oil 

portraits and large-scale murals.

The discovery of 60 mummies near 

Luxor, Egypt, indicates an elaborate burial site 

According to Spanish press sources, a 

group of Spanish archaeologists has 

found tombs in the ancient Egyptian 

city of Luxor that contain some 60 

mummies. The Vizier Amenhotep Huy Project, 

a Spanish archaeological mission, found the 

tombs late last year in the southern Egyptian 

city, according to a video released on YouTube 

by the Spanish news agency Efe. 

Francisco Martin-Valentin, director of the 

Madrid-based Institute of Ancient Egyptian 

Studies, and Teresa Bedman, the institute’s 

co-director, served as the mission’s leaders. 

An associated piece from Efe was also shared 

on Twitter by the Institute of Ancient Egyptian 

Studies. 

According to Martin-Valentin, Amenhotep-Huy, 

who served as the vizier (a high-ranking official) 

under pharaoh Amenhotep III, is connected to 

the two tombs, which were constructed after 

the 18th dynasty (1550-1292 BC). The vizier’s 

tomb, a chapel with 30 columns, is connected 

to the recently found tombs by two rooms. 

According to Martin-Valentin, “In the excavations 

of two secondary tombs existing in the courtyard 

of the main tomb of the Vizier Amen-Hotep Huy 

(Asasif no -28), stripped mummies—more or 

less complete—and parts of mummies have 

been found, which after the examination of our 

anthropologists testify to belong to about 60 

individuals, originally buried in these tombs.” 

The latest discoveries, according to Martin- 

Valentin, “suggest that the vizier’s tomb at 

some time became a necropolis.” From the 

archaeological context, he explains, “We can 

affirm that the individuals recovered belong 

to familial units of, or are connected to, the 

medium-high clergy of Amun of Karnak.” 

A sarcophagus adorned with the Pharaoh 

Amun is among the items from the vizier’s 

tomb that are now on show in a Luxor Museum 

exhibition. According to Martin-Valentin, the 

archaeological mission will pick back up at the 

end of September when six columns from the 

vizier’s chapel have been rebuilt.

“Hyper-realistic drawings seduce the viewer into a 

world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that 

articulates the stream of daily events” says Ramadhan 

Hamisi. 


Ramadhan Hamisi, a Tanzanian artist 

who was born in 1990, is well known 

for his incredibly lifelike portraits of 

both people and animals. Ramadhan 

takes a conceptual approach and welcomes 

the visitor into a continuous state of equilibrium 

and the space that articulates the flow of daily 

happenings. He first drew when he was six 

years old. Pencils and paper, along with what 

he could afford, served as his starting point for 

forging his new artistic identity. Ramadhan won 

various events while in primary and secondary 

school as evidence of it. 

Ramadhan attended Kenyatta University 

to study finance and economics. He studied 

economics, but his artwork was always excellent. 

He didn’t want to study painting since he thought 

it would be boring if he took it too seriously. He 

regarded painting as a pastime and wanted 

it to stay that way. He made an effort to leave 

this artistic path, but he couldn’t help but feel 

lured back to art. 

He decided to devote his attention to his 

artwork and advance his profession as an 

artist shortly after graduating from university 

and starting to teach at a tiny college called 

Sketchmasta Art in 2016. He held his first solo 

exhibition in 2019 named SELF ESTEEM at 

Knext Art Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa. 

The pandemic enabled his work to spread, 

for he prefers to work in the peace of his studio. 

This was an opportunity for him to pause and 

concentrate on his growth as a self-taught artist. 

Ramadhan has been actively working on his 

series of large-format Charcoal drawings for 

the past few years. In 2022, he had a group 

exhibition at Pen Project in Miami, followed by a 

solo exhibition at Galerie Felix Holler in Austria.

capture that with a camera. 

He creates drawings that emanate cold and 

latent anger using graphite, charcoal, and 

pastel. There are times when unsettling beauty 

appears. He uses time-consuming techniques 

to produce his black-and-white artwork. His 

work strives to capture the underlying spirit and 

profound human emotion that are difficult to put 

through words. His artwork directly responds to 

its surroundings and draws inspiration from the 

artist’s daily experiences. These are frequently 

framed examples that would be overlooked 

in their original context.

A century’s worth of audio is preserved 

on wax cylinders 

The first recording, which was distorted, 

was of a child’s voice. The child was 

speaking to whoever was listening and 

wished them a Merry Christmas. The 

second recording, though still noisy, captured 

the end of the second act of “Aida,” sung 

by German singer Johanna Gadski at the 

Metropolitan Opera House in the spring of 1903. 

The third recording was the clearest yet. It 

was the waltz from “Romeo and Juliet” from the 

Met, sung by Australian soprano Nellie Melba. 

The recordings were found at the New York 

Public Library in a conference room. They were 

dug up from a much older source: wax cylinders. 

These recordings were made in the late 1800s 

and were made by Lionel Mapleson, a librarian 

at the Metropolitan Opera. He recorded both 

opera performances he saw as part of his job 

and the everyday life of his family. 

The library preserves audio recordings on 

wax cylinders. Some of these recordings have 

been around for a long time, and some are 

new recordings. The library is going to digitize 

these recordings so that they can be accessed 

and used by people in the future. 

The machine will allow the library to play 

a few broken Mapleson cylinders. Nobody 

alive has ever heard them, so this might be a 

chance to hear something new from the earliest 

moments in recording history. 

The Mapleson cylinders were originally in 

the library’s collection, but a new batch was 

recently donated by Alfred Mapleson, the Met 

librarian’s great-grandson. This donation was 

accompanied by a collection of diaries written 

by Lionel Mapleson that chronicled both his 

daily life and the Metropolitan Opera’s calendar. 

The diaries provide extra context to both 

Mapleson’s audio recordings and the broader 

world of New York opera. For example, one 

entry from New Year’s Day in 1908 noted the 

“tremendous reception” for a performance by 

Gustav Mahler. Another described the time that 

Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini, “in rage,” 

dismissed his orchestra because of noise on 

the roof. 

The diary is very important because it gives 

us a detailed look at Bob Kosovsky’s life in both 

New York and England since he went back to 

visit his family every summer. 

The library got a machine from its creator, 

Nicholas Bergh, last spring. This machine 

is from the 1800s and it was used to record 

Western music. Nicholas Bergh says that this 

machine is very special because it was used 

to document what was happening in theatres 

in the 1800s. 

“It’s in better hands at the New York Public 

Library,” he said. The recordings had originated 

at the Metropolitan Opera; now, they would 

reside nearby forever. “Let’s keep it in New 

York because this is where it all happened. I 

like that idea.”

Tereza Barnard 

Realism, narrative elements, and abstract features allow viewers to slow down 

and observe the hidden layers. 

The world is speeding up, and many 

things are but a swipe away. However, 

some emotions cannot be read in a 

split second. With a graduate degree 

in psychology, Tereza Barnard (b. 1984) has 

learned that hidden but key features take time 

to be observed and revealed. Barnard uses 

realism, narrative elements, and sometimes 

abstract features to allow her viewers to slow 

down, observe the hidden layers, and enter the 

inner worlds of her sitters and her own. In doing 

so, she hopes they will find beauty, inspiration, 

and, most notably, a time for themselves to 

think. Barnard is a self-taught artist and can 

take up to three months to finish a painting as 

she extensively observes the microexpressions 

of her subjects. 

Barnard was a finalist in ModPortrait 2021, 

ARC 15th and 16th Salon, and her work has 

been presented to the jury at Figurativas 2021. 

She received an honourable mention in the 

Blue Review Art Prize and has exhibited in 

galleries across the UK and the United States, 

recently exhibiting with the Royal Society of 

British Artists at Mall Galleries.

Tereza Barnard’s paintings of young beauty 

queens in beautiful ruffle dresses are not just 

a nostalgic look into a world of pageantry, 

they are also a deeper exploration of the 

complexities of the mother-child relationship.

and control that exist within the paintings. The 

forced smiles on the children’s faces and other 

elements come together to create a sense of 

unease that underlies the outward beauty of 

the paintings. 

In this way, Barnard’s work serves as a 

powerful commentary on the societal expectation 

of beauty and the ways in which it is imposed 

upon both mothers and children. It invites 

the viewer to question the impact that these 

expectations have on their relationships and 

the lengths to which mothers will go in pursuit 

of achieving them. Through her use of striking 

imagery and nuanced symbolism, Barnard’s 

paintings reveal the beauty pageant world for 

what it truly is: a constructed reality that has 

real-life consequences.

“The creative process is deliberately chaotic in the 

making yet geared towards the achievement of a 

sense of harmony and visually engaging imagery,” 

says Rosso Emerald Crimson 


Born and raised in Sicily, Rosso moved 

permanently to London in early 2000. 

She holds an MA in International 

Communications and Human Rights 

and worked in advertising before changing 

her direction to the visual arts. In her short 

but intense art career, she has won several art 

prizes, starting with the 2016 “Emerald Winter 

Pride Award”, organised by Pride UK, where 

she won the First Prize, shortly followed by 

another first prize for the Holly Bush “Emerging 

Woman Painter Prize”, leading to Rosso’s first 

solo exhibition in London. In 2019, Rosso was 

awarded the first prize for the portrait/figurative 

category at the “Jackson Open Painting Prize”. 

She was selected to participate in “Sky Portrait 

Artist Of The Year” in 2019 and again in 2021, 

aired on British national TV. In 2021, she was a 

finalist in the renowned “Beautiful Bizarre Art 

Prize”, which opened doors to collaborations 

and exhibitions internationally with galleries in 

the US (Sugarlift, Principle Gallery), Canada 

(James Baerd Gallery), Norway (Romfjord 

Gallery), Germany (Stoerpunkt). 

In her portraiture, Rosso Emerald Crimson 

renders female subjects which emerge through 

a haze of pastels and muted tones. She infuses 

dreamy oil paintings with responses to current 

affairs and questions about the future, which 

often serve as a catalyst for her projects. 

Issues of racial injustice, gender identity and 

environmental crisis have all played a major 

role in her work. 

The women and girls are very charismatic and 

often depicted staring forward with unsmiling 

expressions. They are placed within abstract 

landscapes that defy any reference to objective 

reality. It is within these neutral settings that 

an intimate dialogue can emerge between the 

viewers and the characters, the content of 

which is very subjective. 

Technically, while the portrayal of the 

figures is achieved by a meticulous rendering 

using traditional oil painting techniques, the 

deconstruction (and reconstruction) of the 

surrounding derives from the juxtaposition of 

different media, including spray paint, vigorous 

scraping and scratching of the surface and, 

occasionally, application of metal leaves and

The visionary artist, unveiling beauty in 

digital prints of art

Vratislav Pecka or better known by his 

artistic nickname PosterLad is an artist 

who makes prints using digital art. He 

hails from Prague, Czech Republic. 

He has established a lucrative business, 

ships museum-quality prints worldwide, and 

won a few design honors for his work. His 

graphic design project is known as PosterLad. 

The PosterLad project began in 2016 as a 

diversion for a busy designer who had grown 

weary of the client’s work and had set himself the 

objective of starting to produce his own artistic 

work. Pecka has been creating posters virtually 

every day since that time. The designer does 

not commit to one look for an extended time 

because his style is ever-evolving. PosterLad 

gained popularity on social media within a 

short period and won the 2019 Silver A’Design 

Award and the 2020 German Design Award. 

Vratislav is a full-time artist right now, but he 

is willing to work with clients that want designs 

with his distinctive artistic flair. Pecka makes 

crypto art in addition to creating posters. He 

exhibits his creations on the renowned platform 

SuperRare. This platform hosts only a handful 

of contemporary artists. 

Vratislav believes that a poster does not have 

to be made to promote an event or a product. 

Instead, he uses it to express his artistic ideas. 

Some of the highlights of his works are simple 

shapes and vivid colors. A major part of his 

work is inspired by the Bauhaus school and 

the nostalgia and memories of the ’90s era. 

The posters by PosterLad do not express 

thoughts for delivering a message. The main 

aim of Vratislav Pecka is to captivate the client’s 

vision and please the eyes of the observer. 

His collections include Limited edition, 

Popular, Typography, Minimalist, Mosaic, 

Plants, VHS, Organic, and Notations. 

All the designs available on PosterLad are 

designed by Pecka. He prints on 200g of 

superior-quality paper that is sourced from 

Japan. This paper is resistant to color fading. To 

ensure that the delivery can be made quickly, 

the artist works with different printing houses 

worldwide.

Modern Abstract Art 

Lori works primarily with acrylic paints on canvas. Her overall body of work 

features strong, powerful lines and geometric forms with a focus on space. 


Lore Mirabelli has established herself as an 

abstract artist with a penchant for large, 

exquisite paintings. Originally from the 

Canadian city of Sault Ste, she majored 

in psychology at the University of Laurentian, 

and despite her desire to engage in creative 

art, she eventually found employment in child 

welfare. She maintained her love of modern 

contemporary art despite having a full-time 

job, and in 2009, she decided to enter the 

abstract painting scene in Toronto, Canada. 

She took a leap of faith and sold her home & 

relocated to the big metropolis. 

Lori lived in her studio loft in Downtown 

Toronto from 2017 to 2021. She obtained gallery 

representation both locally and abroad which 

allowed her to display her unique paintings at 

Toronto art exhibitions. She made the decision 

to leave her job in child protection, which she 

had been doing full-time for twenty-one years, 

during the epidemic and pursue a full-time 

career as an abstract artist. 

Her studio is now situated in Almonte, a small, 

charming hamlet outside of Ottawa, Ontario. 

Lori has taken part in a number of exhibitions. 

Her work has been featured on the popular 

television show Mad Men, and she has worked 

with Nuvango Art Gallery & Fashion Designer. 

She also provided live painting for the remake 

musical “Sunday in the Park with George.” She 

was asked to do an 18x13-foot painting for a 

public art installation at 15 Brunel Court, The 

Gallery Condominiums, in City Place Toronto, 

Canada. She is represented domestically by a 

number of galleries and internationally by Det er 

Kunsten (Denmark) and Signet Contemporary 

Art (London, England). 

Lori works primarily with acrylic paints on 

canvas. Her overall body of work features 

strong, powerful lines and geometric forms with 

a focus on space. She specialises in producing 

enormous works of modern abstract art for 

private residences, commercial buildings, 

resorts, and specialty shops.

Hyperrealistic

“My goal isn’t to replicate a picture by hand. My goal 

is to give life to it. To make viewers feel what the 

model or I feel,” says Matteo Zoccheddu. 


Italian artist Matteo Zoccheddu has a keen 

eye for details. You can clearly see this in 

his hyperrealistic charcoal portraits that take 

months to complete, with details that include 

every skin pore on a person’s face. 

Since a very young age, Matteo has always 

been captivated by art and particularly realism. 

After spending his childhood drawing anime 

characters, one day he decides to, as a joke, 

make a portrait of his grandfather and that will 

be the beginning of a passion he had never 

considered before. 

Thanks to YouTube, he is now able to see what 

real hyperrealistic artists can do and spends 

countless hours watching those videos, viewing 

the process of a portrait from start to finish. 

But he doesn’t only watch. He practices 

every moment he can, experimenting with 

different styles and all kinds of materials. He has 

become obsessed with details and the search 

for perfection only for his own amusement. In 

fact, he didn’t know that with this kind of art, 

one could make a living, sometimes even a 

great living, so he stopped before his 20’s. 

During this period of distance, his mind kept 

bringing him back to this passion from time 

to time, even though he is convinced it was 

useless. Almost a decade later, joining social 

media, he is now aware of the vast world of 

realistic drawings and has started posting his 

works. After receiving very positive feedback 

from the community, he decided to take this 

more seriously and started drawing for many 

hours every day, rapidly improving and gradually 

incrementing the difficulty of every new portrait. 

He started making portraits of celebrities he 

admires, like Daniel Radcliffe from the Harry 

Potter saga or Hayao Miyazaki, the great director 

father of the Ghibli movies.

low-quality images from the internet didn’t 

have and this allows him to put those details 

in his new artworks, increasing the level of 

his works even more and that’s one of the 

things that keep him motivated. The prospect 

of improving every day and the desire to push 

his limits more and more.

Sharjah Biennial 15 

The 15th Sharjah Biennial will feature more than 140 artists from 70 different nations after being postponed twice owing to the coronavirus 

pandemic. The exhibition, titled Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present, was created by Sharjah Art Foundation director and 

biennial curator Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi and Nigerian curator, art critic, and writer Okwui Enwezor, who passed away in 2019. In Sharjah, 

the biennial will be held at 16 different locations, including a vegetable market, a power plant, and a former nursery. The 30th anniversary of 

the platform will be celebrated by featuring 30 significant commissions.

Sikka Art and 

Design Festival 

The 11th Sikka Art and Design Festival, which 

honors Dubai’s expanding cultural and creative 

sector, has started preparations by Dubai Culture. 

The celebration held the 10th edition last year 

and was back after a pandemic-related two-year 

absence. The festival brings together visual artists, 

performers, designers, musicians, and other creatives 

to present artworks, concerts, murals, poetry 

readings, and film screenings. The festival is named 

after the passageways between low-rise structures 

in the historic neighborhood close to Dubai Creek 

(still referred to by most long-time residents as Al 

Bastakiya).

The Soil From Which We Came 

The Soil From Which We Came is Larry Amponsah’s (born 1989, Ghana) first 

solo show in the United Arab Emirates, presented by Lawrie Shabibi. The 

exhibition is a continuation of the artist’s exploration of conventional imagemaking 

techniques while also examining modern image politics through the 

use of unorthodox production techniques. The centrepiece of the exhibition is 

Amponsah’s most recent collection of sizable collage works. The artworks take 

the form of colourful miniature collages put together from a variety of pictures 

culled from fashion magazines that mimic clichés of “White beauty” and common 

representational ideas. The initial collages are transformed into compelling largescale 

portraits of Black people using digital manipulations, physical collages, new 

printing techniques, and painting. These portraits draw on the artist’s personal 

experiences as well as larger global Black narratives.

Drawings 

The next solo exhibition by Chaouki Choukini will highlight the 

artist’s beautiful watercolour creations. These concepts for 

sculptures, which frequently begin with a watercolour drawing 

in Choukini’s creative process, can be viewed as independent 

pieces of art. The shapes that populate his sketches are not 

hard and brittle, even though they are meant to be carved or 

cast in wood or bronze; instead, they have soft colours and 

few dark edges; perhaps these watercolour plans partially 

explain the artist’s skill in giving an organic softness to the 

severe geometric shapes of his work.

Musée d’Orsay 

The Louvre features the ideal exhibition for 

anyone interested in impressionism or a fan

Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Musée d’Orsay 

have put together a stunning collection of 

150 paintings that portray the history of the

“American Gothic” is one of the most famous and iconic paintings in 

the United States, and it has become a symbol of rural America and 

the ideals of hard work and self-reliance. The painting is now housed 

in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it is on display to the public. It 

continues to be widely admired and studied by art lovers and scholars 

around the world. 

The series consists of 32 paintings, each of which depicts a 

can of Campbell’s Soup. The paintings were created using a 

screenprinting process and are rendered in bright, bold colours. 

The Campbell’s Soup cans series is one of Warhol’s most famous

Banksy is a pseudonym for a famous British street artist whose real 

identity is unknown. Banksy is known for creating controversial 

and thought-provoking street art that often addresses political and 

social issues. The artist’s work has been featured in galleries and 

museums around the world and has sold for millions of dollars at 

auction. 


ART FACTS 

Jackson Pollock is famous for his drip paintings, which are a type 

of abstract expressionist art. Pollock developed a unique painting 

style in which he dripped, splattered, and poured paint onto the 

canvas, creating intricate and highly dynamic compositions. 

The painting depicts a scene of a boat on the Mediterranean Sea, 

with the boat and its occupants appearing to be suspended in midair 

as if they are being tossed around by the waves. The painting is 

notable for its use of abstract forms and distorted perspective, which 

were revolutionary at the time it was created. It is considered to be a 

key work in the development of cubism, a revolutionary art movement 

that emerged in the early 20th century. 

Monet’s father wanted him to take over the family’s grocery 

business and did not support Monet’s desire to become 

an artist. Monet left home at the age of 16 to study art and 

eventually convinced his father to let him pursue his passion. 

Despite the initial lack of support from his family, Monet went 

on to become one of the most famous and influential artists in 

the history of art. 

The “Thinker” is a bronze sculpture created by Auguste 

Rodin in 1880. It depicts a man seated on a rock, with 

his chin resting on his hand as if in deep thought. The 

sculpture is one of Rodin’s most famous works and has 

become an iconic symbol of intellectual contemplation.

Interflora is a network of flower delivery 

services with more than 58,000 connected 

flower shops spread throughout more than 

140 nations. In 1920, a nurseryman named 

Carl Englemann in Saffron Walden, Essex, 

and a florist named Joe Dobson of Leighton’s 

Seedsmen and Florists in Glasgow were trying 

to expand their businesses. They applied to 

become international members of the Florists 

Telegraph Delivery Association, which had been 

around in the US since 1910 and is now known 

as Florists’ Transworld Delivery. The UK branch 

of the FTDA was established in 1923 with 17 

members. Flowers by Wire was one of the 

advertising catchphrases used at a time when 

florists were communicating with one another 

via telegraph. Telegrams were thereafter sent 

from one member to another. 

In the original Interflora Directory, used by 

members, the longest-established members could 

be recognized by their telegraphic addresses. 

This would be the only telegraphic address 

in that city to include the name Interflora. 

In the case of the founding members, their 

telegraphic addresses were “Interflora Glasgow” 

and “Interflora Saffron Walden”, respectively. 

In 1953 the name changed to Interflora and 

the slogan Flowers Worldwide along with the 

Mercury Man roundel became well known. “Say 

it with Flowers” became the subsequent and 

most famous slogan associated with Interflora. 

The company presents assorted options for 

buying flowers from same-day delivery bouquets 

for your last-minute plans to international ones for 

your loved ones overseas. Anniversary Flowers 

and Birthday Flowers stand to add a splash of 

colour to your celebrations, all ordered online 

from the luxury of your home. 

Interflora champions the technologies of 

the internet to deliver hand-made bouquets of 

fresh flowers to their customers. The company 

in the early 2000s bought out a system called 

Rose, which used broadband connection. This 

enabled orders to be transmitted in real-time. 

All in all, it ensured a more pleasant experience 

for its consumers and helped Interflora truly 

become international.
