Side Trip:
We made a little trek across the border
last week.
The Minnesota border, that is,
to visit the recently reopened Hi Lo Club
in Lakefield. I personally don’t recall ever
dining there before,
although you can’t
live in N’West Iowa
and not have heard of
it.
The tone was set as
we pulled up, with
a supersized urn of
spruce tips resting
adjacent a pair of
freshly painted bright
red doors. Inside, the
decor was 1950s supper
club meets Hollywood
with ornate
MYRNA
WAGNER
wall coverings, elaborate light fixtures and
candelabra, fabulous depictions of Marilyn
Monroe and James Dean, and if you looked
up, a vintage tin ceiling. The dining room
included a cozy seating area with leather
chairs in front of a large fireplace and a
beautiful wooden bar anchoring one end.
Our drinks were served in beautiful glassware,
a detail I greatly appreciate.
Reopening the restaurant is the undertaking
of Jim and Tresa Hussong. The two are
natives of Lakefield, and in recent years
have taken on multiple projects to benefit
the community. A few years back they
renovated and opened Dudley’s Garage, a
bowling alley and restaurant. Many readers
may know Jim for his leadership role as the
mayor of Arnolds Park.
Jim happened to be in the restaurant that
night and stopped by our table to visit. He
shared a few memories of the establishment,
details of elements yet to be completed
and the story behind the fabulous
artwork in the front entry.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and
wish the Hussongs and their staff much success.
And the food? From truffle fries to steak
to bread pudding — all were delicious.
