Side Trip:
We made a little trek across the border
last week.
The Minnesota border, that is,
to visit the recently reopened Hi Lo Club
in Lakefield. I personally don’t recall ever
dining there before,
although you can’t
live in N’West Iowa
and not have heard of
it.
The tone was set as
we pulled up, with
a supersized urn of
spruce tips resting
adjacent a pair of
freshly painted bright
red doors. Inside, the
decor was 1950s supper
club meets Hollywood
with ornate
MYRNA
WAGNER
wall coverings, elaborate light fixtures and
candelabra, fabulous depictions of Marilyn
Monroe and James Dean, and if you looked
up, a vintage tin ceiling. The dining room
included a cozy seating area with leather
chairs in front of a large fireplace and a
beautiful wooden bar anchoring one end.
Our drinks were served in beautiful glassware,
a detail I greatly appreciate.
Reopening the restaurant is the undertaking
of Jim and Tresa Hussong. The two are
natives of Lakefield, and in recent years
have taken on multiple projects to benefit
the community. A few years back they
renovated and opened Dudley’s Garage, a
bowling alley and restaurant. Many readers
may know Jim for his leadership role as the
mayor of Arnolds Park.
Jim happened to be in the restaurant that
night and stopped by our table to visit. He
shared a few memories of the establishment,
details of elements yet to be completed
and the story behind the fabulous
artwork in the front entry.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and
wish the Hussongs and their staff much success.
And the food? From truffle fries to steak
to bread pudding — all were delicious.

Every once in awhile the Pearson
Lakes Art Center in Okoboji
pulls pieces from its vault to put
on display.
That is the case now through
March 4 with the “Selections from
our Collections” exhibit in the art
center’s Monte Pearson Gallery.
There are some familiar works of
art for those who frequent the art
center, as well as some new additions
to the collections.
That variety is what intrigues visual
arts director Danielle Clouse Gast
each time she puts together one of
these shows, comparing it to when
a family wants to mix things up with
their home decorations and maybe
decides to rearrange some furniture.
“It’s always a fun challenge,”
Clouse Gast said. “Even though it’s

working with pieces that are in the
building or maybe some viewers
have seen before, it’s trying to spin
them in a new way and I feel in
recent years the art center has expanded
its collection so much, there
are so many options visually to pull
from.”
Clouse Gast knew she wanted to
start with a large painting by Gary
Ernest Smith, which the art center
added in 2019, as well as round out
the exhibit with some 3D pieces.
Some have been out in the art center,
or in some of the offices perhaps,
but are making their debut in a gallery
show.
Others have been part of artist
specific exhibits, from which the art
center made purchases for its collections.
The show is a mix of selections
from the Pearson Lakes Art Center
collection and the Pearson Art Foundation
collection.
Clouse Gast said these shows take
form the day they hang the pieces
and in this case she gravitated towards
color, especially yellow that
pulls the viewer all around the room.
“Perhaps because it’s winter and I
wanted to liven it up a bit,” Clouse
Gast said. “You’re working to create
new experiences with what you have
and it’s a tremendously big deal to
have a collection like we have to be
able to do that.”

It’s one thing to admit having a case
of the blues. It’s another thing to
embrace it.
That’s what’s happening with the
latest gallery show at Arts on Grand in
downtown Spencer.
Dubbed “Winter Blues,” the exhibit
is on display until March 4 and features
a variety of artists and mediums,
all highlighting the “blues” in some
form or fashion.
An exhibit reception is scheduled
from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.
“So when we had Artisans Road Trip
a couple artists here were talking and
this idea came up,” said Tara Brown,
director at Arts on Grand. “Another
gallery had done something similar
and I thought how cool is that to kind
of make light of the winter blues. Us
Iowans, we just endure it, so it’s kind
of a nice way to re-appreciate winter.”
Not every work focuses on the winter
season, but nature quickly became
an obvious theme as they began hanging
pieces for the show.
Lots of blue birds, blue skies, blue
water.
Then there are some pieces where
the blue comes through in both color
and musical genre.
There are some pieces of blue jewelry,
polymer clay work, glass and
ceramics as well.
“We kind of left it open ended and
put out a call to artists and it just came
together that way, it’s definitely a fun
show,” Brown said.

The Dickinson County Nature
Center is inviting you to bring
your love bugs to their next
Family Nature Night so they can
learn to love bugs.
The free, monthly event takes place
the fourth Friday of each month and
is set to take place at 5 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 24. Each month, Family Nature
Night has a new theme and this
month will feature the theme of Love
Bugs.
“We have nothing but love for
our decomposing, pollinating,
Nature Night set for
Feb. 24 in Okoboji
nutrient recycling bugs! Join us as
participants see firsthand how these
mighty mini creatures help the world
around us,” said Britney Snell, a
naturalist with the nature center.
This program will help introduce
the exciting world of bugs to kids of
all ages and will help them answer
this question: what makes an insect
an insect?
Bugs often get a bad wrap.
And the organizers of this event are
hoping to change that.
“Bugs and insects are an important
part of our ecosystem. Kids tend
to miss the importance of these
creatures due to their off-putting
appearance,” said Jackie Jerge,
the community relations coordinator
with the Dickinson County
Nature Center. “We should all
learn to love bugs as they help
pollinate plants, disperse seeds,
and help keep soil heathy by
adding nutrients to the ground.
This impacts our food cycle.”
In addition to learning
more about the characteristics
of insects, the group will get
the chance to meet the nature
center’s own collection of insects.
There will also be a craft where
the families will get to design
their own love bug.

In addition to being tasty, charcuterie
boards have the ability to be stunning but
also casual. They are as flexible and individual
