MANAGER’S NOTES
Interesting times ahead as we
enter the final third of the season.
There is a lot going on at the
moment and matches are coming thick
and fast, as they do in this league,
particularly alongside a decent cup run.
It has been pointed out a bit in the
media that we are now kicking off a run
against a lot of teams who are currently
attempting to chase us down, especially
Middlesbrough, who have been on a good
run of late.
Most of the preparation for this game,
probably similar to Boro’s, has been
around rest and recovery and we are
looking forward to it, particularly after the
display on Saturday when, as I said after
the match, there was little to criticise.
We were fully prepared for what
Swansea would bring and it was a
committed display from start to finish.
It was different from the game down in
Wales earlier in the season, we created a
plan which included manipulating areas
to go after them and the players seemed
to enjoy it. We were willing to take risks,
knew that there would be openings if they
played through but we’ve got some good
defenders if that occurred and, fortunately,
the majority of the game was played on
the front foot from our perspective.
As I’ve said previously, we will come up
against challenges in every week and
it is great that we are managing to deal
with them. Different teams create different
approaches that we have to consider. We
have a lot of video analysis and meetings
to understand positions with and without
the ball, we know what we want, and the
demands placed on the players.
Similarly, the opposition will be doing
likewise. Generally, teams have tried
to shift things up to cause us problems
and that’s also got to be taken into
consideration.
This is part and parcel of the attention
to detail we undertake when preparing
for a game, in this tough division it is fine
margins that can help you pick up points
as well as the hard yards the players put in
both in training and in games.
Every fixture is important, an
opportunity to pick up points and it is futile
trying playing down the size of the game.
In fact, as I discussed with the media
earlier this week, we intentionally build
the games up. You want players to be able
to shine in big games and how are they
going to do that if you play those fixtures
down in the build-up?
If you are successful, matches will get
harder and harder the higher you go so
the ‘big-game mentality’ is a factor and
everyone can prepare correctly for these
matches and the atmosphere that is
associated with them.
Generally, we have done well in big
games. I appreciate that at this point last
year, we were the ones chasing the top
sides and now the target is on our back
with teams looking to catch us, but these
are the challenges we face and have to
overcome if we are to achieve our ultimate
goal. Including tonight there’s 16 games
left in the regular season, they are all big
games in my eyes and that’s how we will
be building them up.
OLI GETTING CLOSE TO WHERE HE WANTS TO BE
Striker Oli
McBurnie says he’s
not far away from
where he wants to be as
he looks to hit the heights
of his early season form
following his return
from injury.
After hitting the net on
a regular basis throughout
the first half of the current
campaign, niggling
injuries have ensured his
comeback has been one
of a stop-start nature in
recent weeks.
Despite not being in a
position to complete 90
minutes, Oli has still found
the net in games against
Wrexham and latterly
against Swansea at the
weekend as he closes
in on the fitness levels
required to be a regular
starter once again.
He said: “I’m getting
there. The game against
Rotherham was my first
start in the league since
we played them at Bramall
Lane, so that’s a while ago.
It has been frustrating for
me, but I’m over the other
side now so it was nice to
get 70 minutes under my
belt. I’m getting there.
“I just want to get
back to where I was at.
I was frustrated with my
performance against
PLAYER FOCUS
Rotherham and Macca
(Stuart McCall) explained
I’m not going to get back
to where I was in the
first game.
“I’ve set myself
standards which I want
to reach and if I don’t
reach them then I get a bit
frustrated, so I want to get
to where I was when I was
playing every week, full of
confidence, enjoying it with
the boys and scoring goals.
The ultimate goal is to help
the boys get promoted.”
With his injury issues
seemingly behind him, Oli
▲ Oli McBurnie is looking to hit the high standards again
states being able to fully
concentrate on his game
again is pleasing, as he
aims to help the Blades
achieve their goal with the
final stretch of the season
starting to come into view.
He added: “It’s nice to
be able to concentrate
on my football, hopefully
I can get back to what
I was doing before I got
injured and help us get to
where we want to be. The
boys have been excellent,
you don’t get into these
positions by chance - noone
gives you it.”
BASH PROUD OF APPEARANCE MILESTONE
Club stalwart Chris
Basham admits he
felt a feeling of
pride at recently hitting
500 career appearances.
The popular figure
is still going strong at
Bramall Lane and, as he
approaches the end of
his ninth full season as a
Blade, and after previously
appearing for the likes of
Bolton and Blackpool, he
looks back on his career so
far with great affection.
He said: “I’m very proud.
It is always tough when you
are at a Premier League
club at the start, trying
to find your way into an
unreal Bolton side, that
was tough, but I had belief
from managers there who
stuck with me. It went well,
I had the odd Premier
League appearance,
and was part of a great
culture. Then Blackpool,
a few ups and downs and
injuries, but I had some
good managers and played
in The Championship.
Now I’ve had nine years
at Sheffield United, and
373 appearances later
and everything that has
happened - I’m very proud
of the achievement.
“To stick at it and reach
PLAYER FOCUS
▲ Chris Basham recently hit the 500 career game milestone
achieved it, it goes to
prove I’ve had belief from
managers, coaches and
I’ve also believed in myself
to get where I am, and I am
still going. Hopefully I can
carry it on for a few more
years yet.”
The 34-year-old has
never let the Blades down
during many years of
loyal service as he looks
to add more memories
with the Blades well
positioned currently in the
Championship standings.
Another crack at the
Premier League would
be welcome, as he looks
back on some of his United
highlights, most of which
happened in United’s first
season back in English
football’s elite.
He continued: “The
games against Arsenal and
West Ham in the Premier
League at home, they were
special. I think they were
big wins. The 3-3 at home
to Manchester United was
a big game too.
“There’s the Leeds
game, perhaps not my best
performance, but it was just
a huge goal. The Premier
League is so demanding
and focused, to have a
good season and win the
Player of the Year award
was huge for me. That was
a real highlight.”
SANDER STILL STRIVING FOR MORE
Sander Berge has
been in the goals
again in recent
weeks, but he insists he’s
still looking for more
ahead of tonight’s clash
with Middlesbrough.
The Norwegian has
been in imperious form of
late with a strong display
against Wrexham in the FA
Cup, backed up by another
formidable performance in
United’s 3-0 victory over
Swansea at the weekend.
The former Genk ace
netted in both of the
above games, taking his
overall tally to six in all
competitions and despite
his recent run he says he’s
still desperate for more.
He said of the goal
against Swansea: “It was
a nice lay-off from Macca
(James McAtee), he
read the game well and
I obviously gave him the
shout. He found the right
pass and it was nicely teed
up for me and I found the
qualities to find the corner.
“It’s nice to score but
I always want more. I’m
pushing for the next goal.
I’ve felt in the periods I’ve
played in regularly this
season and last season
that I’ve been able to
contribute with goals and
assists. I just need to keep
PLAYER FOCUS
doing that. We’re a team
where many people can
score, we showed that with
the way we play where
everyone comes into the
box, and everyone has
been involved on that
side this year, so we just
have to keep going. It
doesn’t matter if it is me or
someone else, the most
important thing is we win.”
The Blades welcome
in-form Middlesbrough
to Bramall Lane tonight
knowing Michael Carrick’s
side are one of a number of
teams looking to close the
gap on the Blades.
Sander appreciates the
talent within the Boro ranks
and states that he, and his
team-mates, will respect
the opposition whilst also
sticking to the principles
which have put United in a
good position coming into
the middle of February.
He stated: “It’s a big
game. These are the
games you want to play in.
We have respect for them,
they have done very well
lately since Michael Carrick
took over and we’ll be fully
focused on that game now.
“The mentality, together
with the staff, is we are
always hungry for more.
There are always ups and
downs in the season, but
we are stable mentally and
it is all about maintaining
control.”
SITTING DOWN WITH
DANIEL Daniel Jebbison
JEBBISON
Daniel Jebbison is eager to
make up for lost time
between now and the end
of the season, having been forced
to take a watching brief in
recent weeks.
The exciting youngster is
available for the first time this
month following a three-match
ban after an incident with
Wrexham’s Ben Tozer at The
Racecourse Ground that saw the
fourth official prompt the referee
into brandishing a straight red.
And with insufficient evidence
to support a successful appeal
despite the decision appearing
dubious, Daniel has subsequently
had to serve his punishment.
It was obviously an untimely
setback for the 19-year-old who
had built on his first goal of the
season at Millwall with his first
senior goal at Bramall Lane in the
victory over Hull City in January,
having worked tirelessly to
overcome an ankle issue that saw
him out of action for two months
towards the back end of 2022.
When Daniel speaks honestly
and openly about his time at S2,
and his entry into United’s coveted
Academy system. it is sometimes
hard to remember the striker is
still a teenager after he burst onto
the scene in red and white with
a memorable goal at Goodison
Park in the Premier League, when
current boss Paul Heckingbottom
was interim manager following the
departure of Chris Wilder.
That was his full United debut
and there has been plenty of
water under the bridge in the 639
days that have passed since, but
Daniel’s ambition to establish
himself in United’s first team has
never wavered, bettering himself
on-loan at Burton Albion prior
to Heckingbottom’s permanent
appointment and the last summer
coming back for pre-season with a
point to prove and the bit well and
truly between his teeth.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
UTB 13
UTB: Having returned from
an ankle injury that disrupted
the opening months of your
campaign despite a promising
pre-season, how nice was it
to return to competitive action
on Boxing Day?
DJ: “It was good to be back
involved after what seemed like
so long on the sidelines. I just
concentrated on training well,
trying my hardest and knowing
if I deserved the opportunity the
manager would reward me with
opportunities and minutes on the
pitch. I made a lot of progress on
and off the pitch last summer but
there is still loads more for me
to improve on and develop. I’ve
been in and around the squad
most of the season when fit and
I know exactly what I need to do
to find myself on the pitch more
and pushing for a starting jersey
too, the manager is clear.”
UTB: You were named in the
starting XI for the seasonal
opener at Watford having
been amongst the goals in the
friendlies, so how big a setback
was the injury at the time?
DJ: “I felt I had a point to
prove returning in the summer,
following my recall from Burton
last January. I knew I needed to
get my head down and realise
the challenge that was in front
of me. I had that realisation
that everything was there for
me, but I had to work hard, get
better quicker and grasp every
single opportunity on the pitch.
The Watford game was a big
experience for me personally, a
learning curve and it was tough.
I’d been given a big vote of
confidence and although that
didn’t go as I’d hoped I knew the
manager and coaching staff were
desperate for me to do well. The
injury was a huge setback, but for
me it was about coping with the
disappointment and I’m lucky to
have some good people that are
close to me, they certainly helped
me through some tough days.”
“EVERY STRIKER LOVES
SCORING A GOAL, BILLY
SHARP HAS TAUGHT ME SO
WELL! THE GOAL AT MILLWALL
WAS PERFECT TIMING AND A
REAL CONFIDENCE BOOST”
UTB: Following three
substitute appearances over
the festive period you were
then handed another chance
from the off at Millwall in the
cup, that must have been a real
opportunity for you to make a
statement to the manager?
DJ: “Every striker loves scoring
a goal, Billy Sharp has taught
me so well! The goal at Millwall
was perfect timing and a real
confidence boost because
getting your name on the
scoresheet is what we are paid
to do really and the rest of my
game feeds off it. I was delighted
to take that early chance against
Hull too because that game felt
that bit more special, with it being
at home. I probably should have
had another one at least, but it
was a tidy, instinctive finish from
Iliman’s excellent pass. To have
scored in consecutive starts
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
14 UTB
was great because every game
is going to be a challenge for
me to overcome and having got
sent off at Wrexham it shows
I still have a lot to learn to be
able to consistently produce
performances that will help the
team achieve its goals.”
UTB: Other than boss Paul
Heckingbottom, who else do
you feel has aided or is currently
helping your development and
integration as a regular within
United’s first-team squad?
DJ: “I’m very, very fortunate
to have so many good people
around me, driving me on and
pushing me to do even better.
I’m very grateful to how much
time Jack Lester has invested
in me, since my U16 days really.
He knows me inside out, he
knows my strengths, where I’m
improving and where I needed
to work even harder, I’m thankful
to him, the gaffer and his staff,
but also the spell at Burton
was fantastic too. Jimmy Floyd
(Hasselbaink) is a legend of the
game, so you just want to listen to
him and absorb it like a sponge.
He was very hands on during
training, he joined in the sessions
and would also do 1-2-1 drills with
you as an individual. The dressing
room here is demanding but the
lads are so driven for success.
Ollie Norwood is someone I really
look up to, he is always at his
best, whether it be in training,
the gym or obviously on the pitch
during a game. He keeps his
standards consistently high, and
I sometimes just step back I think
I need to be more like him, he has
a great attitude, he drives me on
and is a great bloke too.”
UTB: Despite you all having
to contend with injuries this
season, would it be fair to
say all the strikers at the club
have different strengths and
key attributes meaning they
can combine well in different
partnerships?
DJ: “100%. We have a big few
months ahead, speaking for
myself I have a chance to keep
stepping up and trying to stake a
claim for good minutes. My goal
this season was to be involved in
a promotion campaign, I want to
be back in the Premier League
with Sheffield United and really
try and establish myself, but
ultimately, I just have to keep my
head down and work hard for
that to happen. We have a terrific
group of forwards that’s for sure,
we all have obvious strengths but
are very different in other ways
and I think whoever the manager
picks in any given game
can contribute to make
us dangerous, we are a
special team and training
is a challenge every
single day. I try and take
things from the others to
improve my game,
but the mindset
not just amongst
the strikers is
about trying to
improve your
game further
and take it to
the next level,
to always want
to be learning
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
UTB 15
too when I’ve needed a kick
up the backside. I don’t mind
the expectation that has been
on my shoulders since scoring
at Everton, I’d rather have that
pressure to drive me on and push
myself rather than just sitting in
my comfort zone. The drive needs
to come from inside me firstly,
but the staff are always pushing
for that bit more and I honestly
can’t thank them enough for what
they do, not just for me, but for
all the lads behind the scenes,
nothing is too much, and they’ll
do everything within their power
to make you a better player.”
and willing to put the time in has
been key to our success so far
this season.”
UTB: You’ve previously
touched on the demands
that come from the players
themselves in the dressing room,
but how much ‘tough love’ do
you receive from the coaching
staff and is it something you feel
brings the best out of you?
DJ: “Hecky and his staff are all
tough on me, but I know why, it
is because they genuinely care
and know what they expect
from me, they know my potential
and have made me realise that
UTB: Let’s bring some humour
to the table…tell us about the
first time you got on the wrong
side of Jack Lester…but in the
long run how have you learnt
from some of your mistakes?!
DJ: “I will never forget my first
day at the club when the manager
and Jack were working in the
Academy. From the moment
I entered the building I knew what
they were going to be about, and
they’ve helped me so, so much
to get to where I am today. I was
once late for a training session
having spent too much time
tying my boots, Jack shouted at
me and let’s just say I knew not
to be late again! I knew there
was a new coach coming into
the club and there he was right
in front of me, he said what he
felt he needed to then I went
off and honestly had a fantastic
session. That is when I knew
how things would be, there is no
messing around, everything is
done with the absolute upmost
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
16 UTB
professionalism not just in the
first-team, but throughout the
whole club and that is a credit
to Hecky, Jack, Stu and all the
staff. But everyone needs these
learning experiences when you
are a youngster, struggles and
setbacks happen to everyone,
sometimes they are avoidable,
sometimes they aren’t. But I’ve
learnt the small details really
count and are the difference
from being okay to the absolute
best you can be, some people
will realise their potential, a lot
won’t. Our players have the
highest standards and have had
excellent careers, you can see
the difference and I’m learning
from some of the best every day
to become the best version of
myself on and off the field.”
UTB: During your spell
of having to watch on from
the stand, how have you
gauged recent performances
and progress?
DJ: “The sending off came at a
bad, bad time for me personally,
but I can only look forward and
not back and thankfully apart
from not being able to play my
own part nothing has been lost.
We deservedly beat Wrexham
in the replay after coming from
behind twice in the second half
in Wales and although it wasn’t
pretty it was a good point we
got at Rotherham, but I thought
we were very clinical at the
weekend in what, on paper, could
have turned into a really tough
test, because Swansea can be
frustrating opposition to face if
you don’t score early on. The
goals on Saturday came at good
times, we defended excellent
again and that has been a big
reason why we’ve done so well
this season because we know we
are tight at one end of the pitch
and have some real goalscoring
threats at the other end.”
UTB: Looking ahead to
welcoming Middlesbrough to
Bramall Lane on Wednesday
night, how excited are you about
potentially returning to the
matchday 18?
DJ: “I’m not going to lie; it is
probably the game I’ve been
looking forward to most for a long
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
UTB 17
time and that comes off the back
of the frustration of missing the
last three games. As and when
I’m selected, I want to build on
the goals I scored against Millwall
and Hull because that was some
feeling scoring under the lights
here on that Friday night and
I want more of those moments
between now and the end of
the season because like all the
boys, I hope to have a role to play
in helping us finish strongly. It
will be a wonderful atmosphere
against Boro, it is a big game,
we’re hosting a promotion rival
and there is plenty at stake for
both teams.”
UNDER-21s UPDATE
United’s U21s have further
extended their impressive lead at
the top of the Professional
Development League after defeating
Birmingham City 2-1.
The Blades started much the better of
the two sides with Andre Brooks and Sai
Sachdev going close early on.
On 10 minutes, United took the lead
when the free scoring Louie Marsh finished
into the bottom corner after good hold up
play from Antwoine Hackford.
Despite the Blades’ dominance, it was
Birmingham who struck next when a
mistake allowed Keke Simmonds to roll the
ball into an empty net.
United were quickly back in front when
Owen Hampson showed great persistence
to chase a pass through the middle to nick
the ball and slot in from close range.
There were further opportunities before
the end with Jili Buyabu and Sydie Peck
both denied by the Birmingham ‘keeper.
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United’s U18s progressed to the
semi-finals of the Premier League
Cup after defeating top flight
Fulham 3-0 at the Randox
Health Academy.
After an early save from Luke Faxon,
United quickly took command with a Sam
Aston curling effort cannoning against
the crossbar. The Blades then took the
lead when Ben Drake’s free-kick was
headed across the goal by Jack Waldron
before being turned in by Jayden Prunty at
the near post.
It was soon 2-0 when Aston saw a shot
blocked, with his second attempt looping
up off a defender and into the far corner.
George Dickinson also went close
before the game was sewn up just after
the hour mark when Aston’s shot was
saved allowing Kurtis Havenhand to tap in
the loose ball.
Havenhand had a goal ruled out for
offside as the Blades looked to add further
gloss, with United also securing a clean
sheet with some late
blocks on a good
day for the Blades.
United Women have added
goalkeeper Fran Stenson to the
ranks after agreeing a loan deal
with Arsenal until the end of the season.
The former Birmingham stopper has
also enjoyed a spell with Manchester City
in her career, whilst she’s also gained
experience with two loan spells in the
Championship with Blackburn.
The England youth team goalkeeper, 21,
said: “I’m delighted to be here. The girls
have got a lot to prove in the rest of the
season and hopefully I have some impact
in that and hopefully we can move up the
table. Everyone’s been great, they’re a
really nice group of girls. They’ve been so
welcoming, and I can’t wait to get started
now. I want to make an impact and show
what I can do.”
Stenson kept a clean sheet in the recent
confidence boosting win over Charlton,
after debuting in the narrow loss against
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Nina Wilson has
joined National League side Wolves on
BLADES SURPRISE FOR IRSHAD
Following a recent visit to St Luke’s
thanks from patient and Blades fan Irshad
United made the annual Christmas
visit, but his nurses and the fundraising
since the 1960s, so through the work
undertaken by the staff, we are delighted
he hasn’t missed out.
Here Irshad is pictured along with nurse
and he also took to social media to thank
both St. Luke’s and the Blades.
FABLES & FOLKLORE
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
To Cap It All...
Now then, here is a question for
you. What is the best display you
have ever seen given by another
‘keeper at Bramall Lane against
the Blades?
Tough one, isn’t it? Firstly, you have
to be objective and actually, sometimes
grudgingly admit that one of the
opposition has been truly outstanding,
and that’s not always going to be easy.
One thing is for sure, some of Chris
Woods’ outings between the sticks at
BDBL won’t make the cut, and for very
clear reasons, but overall, did it make him
a bad ‘keeper? The honours won and
international appearances would strongly
suggest no, so maybe he saved the
howlers for the local derby games? If so,
then thanks for that Chris!
At United, it has to be said that we
have, by and large, been graced by some
fine custodians down the years. Our first
‘keeper was a lad from Gainsborough
▲ The great Alan Hodgkinson pictured in 1957
▲ Peter Shilton pictured during the aforementioned
game at Bramall Lane in January 1991
called Charlie Howlett, a man who, when
the advert went in the newspapers on
the morning after the legendary March
22nd meeting when the club was formed,
applied and basically got the job. In true
Carry On Football style, he wore glasses
even during a game. He let a record
number of goals in during a cup game
against Bolton Wanderers at their old
Pikes Lane ground on what was described
as a “pudding of a pitch” and apparently
spent most of the game fishing around in
the mud for his specs!
Howlett managed 112 appearances for
the fledgling Blades and overall did very
well before returning to Gainsborough
Trinity and then settling in Birmingham.
Sadly, his number was called in 1906 and
he is buried back in the Lincolnshire town.
His replacement, Will Lilley from Staveley,
played in our first ever League game (he
also conceded our first League goal!)
and managed 30 appearances. He even
scored three goals in the process! The
main replacement for him started a line
of great ‘keepers, and that was William
Henry Foulkes. That name is the stuff that
generations of Blades were weaned on. 6
feet 2 tall and, at his peak, over 23 stones
in weight - a true colossus of the game
and our past in every sense. A player who
won everything the game had to offer,
was the first captain of Chelsea and also
reported to be the originator of the fabled
“Who ate all the pies?” chant.
In fact, from Foulkes right up to Alan
Hodgkinson and over a five-decade spell,
there aren’t that many in between, and
that speaks volumes. Joe Lievesley took
the shirt and went on to play for England
as well as representing the Blades in the
top flight. Another product of the Staveley
area, he was the first ‘keeper to play for
Arsenal at Highbury. An amazing family, I
think there were seven siblings who were
also professional players. When he retired
from playing, he became a manager at
Rossington pit near Doncaster. One of
his sons was the head coach of Torino
and was killed on their plane when it
crashed in May 1949. Leslie had played
for Manchester United when younger
along with Crystal Palace and a long spell
with Torquay before turning his hand to
the coaching side of the game. He had
survived a previous air crash with the
youth team and two more during the war. I
mean, how unlucky is that? He is buried in
Rossington Cemetery by the way.
Gough was next. England and FA Cup
winner sacked by the strict Methodist
board of directors for breaching his
contract in 1923 by……buying a pub in
Castleford! Our chair, the legendary Sir
Charles Clegg and those who controlled
the club, were anti-alcohol. His mantra
was “No man gets lost on a straight road”
and he was a prime mover in what was
known as The Temperance Movement.
The argument on that one raged right
through to 1927 when they finally released
his signature, and he was free to sign for
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
UTB 37
Torquay United. The battle arguably cost
him another FA Cup winning gong as he
probably should, and would, have played
against Cardiff City in the ‘25 Final. The
next big one was Jack Smith, another cup
finalist, and like so many it was arguably
the war years that stole his chance of
international recognition. He managed the
best part of two decades as number one
before another great in the shape of Ted
Burgin weighed in with 314 appearances
to be succeeded by the immortal
Alan Hodgkinson.
What can you say about Hodgy? One
of the shortest around at 5 foot 9 but with
the heart of a lion, the agility of a cat and
a love of Sheffield United which would
be hard to match. England player and the
first ever professional goalkeeper coach
in the game, he was the man who found
and coached Peter Schmeichel for Sir
Alex and told everyone he coached that,
if and when they played at Bramall Lane,
they needed to remember that, when
they walked up to the Kop, that they were
walking in his footsteps. It’s been seven
years since he passed, and I always think
of him to this day. A fiercely proud man
and as ‘Sheffield’ as you could get, he had
stayed away from the Lane for a long time
as he felt that he had been treated badly
by the board over lost monies off the
turnstiles from his testimonial game. Who
am I to say? But I do know that it was the
museum project and the fact that I got on
with him like a house on fire that helped
bring him back into the Blades family.
He had come up to Sheffield to see
family from his home just outside Rugby
one day and called in for a coffee. We
sat in the museum having a natter about
the games at the weekend, he was still
very much working, for Chris Wilder in
fact and at that point well into his 70s. I
remember it was bouncing down outside,
but nevertheless he asked if he could
have a wander up out of the tunnel to look
at the pitch, and, of course, there was no
issue with that whatsoever. He was gone a
while, so I thought I had better go and find
where he had got to. I didn’t have to look
far, and what I saw is one of the things that
will never ever leave me from my time on
the staff here. The great man was stood at
the side of the pitch, hands in pockets, just
taking in the arena he had graced so many
times, but mixed with the lashing rain, he
had tears rolling down his face.
“Are you ok Hodgy?” I enquired. He
wiped his eyes, looked at me and just
said, “You don’t realise just what this place
means to me JG. I love every blade of
grass, every seat. It’s home and I miss it so
much.” I had gone at that point too. What a
man. Still brings one to my eye to this day,
and 674 appearances for one club just
about tells the tale.
Anyway, back to original question.
The best display you have witnessed by
an opposing ‘keeper against United at
Bramall Lane? For me, there is no contest,
and it has stayed with me to this day. Our
first season back in the top flight under
Harry Bassett had been tough to say the
least. Our first League victory had come
at the 17th attempt against Forest. Around
this time, we added Glyn Hodges to the
side from Palace. At first a loan, those
around then may recall that the fans
were called on to raise some of the funds
needed to secure the Wales international
permanently, and the Promotions
Department, then under the guidance of
Mick Rooker, launched a “Grand National”
sweepstake to help fund. A player
known well to Harry as he had brought
him through the ranks at Wimbledon, he
played a huge part in our resurgence,
and what a player he could be - sublimely
skillful and strong as an ox, fans took to
him straight away and many likened him
to the legendary TC. A comparison that
must have irked the great man as it was a
Hodgy tackle in a pre-season friendly that
put him out for a good few months, but
that is another story!
I was on the Kop for the game against
Derby County, and that day we were
excellent and threw the kitchen sink
at a Rams side which had the likes of
Mark Wright and Dean Saunders in their
ranks. The man of the match that day
was Peter Shilton in goal. He gave an
absolute masterclass in the art and saved
everything that we could throw at him.
I can’t remember who hit one particular
shot, but it was flying in all the way with
Shilts wrong footed, yet he still managed
to stretch to it and tip it around the post.
Incredible, and this was a player then
into his 40s. I could remember him being
awesome when I was a young ‘un for
Stoke and then I was a big fan as he went
to Forest, and they went on to win two
European Cups. I recall Cloughie saying
something about signing the biggest
‘keeper with the biggest hands and
building from the back, and that he did
in some style. That day, Shilton saved
all bar one tap in from Hodges and, as
Hodge wheeled away to celebrate with
an ecstatic Shoreham, he tripped over
the advertising hoardings - not the goal
celebration that I would have imagined he
would have planned, but who cared. We
had breached the unbreachable and got
past the unmovable object that day which
was Peter Shilton, and that meant three
valuable points in the fight to keep us
up. Priceless.
Shilton got a proper ovation at the end
of the game from the Shoreham faithful,
and quite right too. This wasn’t long after
Italia 90 bear in mind, and he had given us
a show. 125 caps is some indication (along
with all the other stuff) as to how good he
was. Incredible to think he was between
the sticks against Man City in 1969, and
I was only a year or so old when that
game was played!
I am sure others will have different
opinions, and that is what football is
all about at the end of the day, but
that’s mine, and he did that in the
steps of Hodgy. I wonder if he had
been warned?
WHAT’S THE
STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor
DAVE BURKINSHAW features a Blades related photograph
from his personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
After the Blades
were relegated
from the old First
Division at the end of the
1967-68 season longserving
manager, John
Harris, was appointed in a
new role of general
manager.
The new post of first
team manager was filled
by former Shrewsbury
Town boss, Arthur Rowley.
Rowley’s brief, as well as
trying to win promotion,
was to use the transfer
market wisely especially
the lower leagues and
Scottish market.
Money was made
available for Rowley
although he was also
expected to sell players to
help balance the books.
In his transfer dealings
Rowley bought wisely
signing Ted Hemsley,
David Powell, John Flynn
and Eddie Colquhoun all
of whom would go on to
play key roles in United’s
promotion back to the top
flight. Unfortunately for
Rowley that promotion did
not come until May 1971
almost two years after he
had left the club.
In the event Rowley
was only in charge for
the one season, 1968-69.
Results were disappointing
especially away from home
and a final league position
of ninth had not been in
the script at the start of the
season. To add to Rowley’s
woes, cup results were also
disappointing with the team
exiting the League Cup and
FA Cup at the first hurdle.
Today’s featured
photograph was taken
during United’s home game
with Preston North End
played on 23rd November
1968. A crowd of 15,969
were at the game to
witness the home debut
of another new signing,
striker John Tudor. Tudor
had been signed from
Coventry City just over a
week earlier for a then club
record fee of £58.5K. John
had made his league debut
at Bury the previous week
and had scored both goals
for United in their 2-0 win.
He had already endeared
himself to fans who were
now hoping for more.
John did not disappoint
scoring with a header
after five minutes and
later adding another fine
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
UTB 41
headed goal. Further
headed goals from Gil
Reece and Preston
defender Jim McNab,
into his own net, gave the
Blades a comprehensive
4-0 win.
The photograph features
one of John’s two headed
goals in front of the
Shoreham Street Kop. In
goal for North End is their
long-serving Republic of
Ireland international Alan
Kelly. It was his son who
later played for the Blades
in the 1990s.
Tudor’s position has
obscured another United
player (which may be Colin
Addison) and a Preston
player. The other Preston
player visible behind Tudor
is midfielder Ken Knighton,
which some older Blades
may remember annoying
United when playing for
Hull City at the Lane in the
promotion season with his
robust tackling.
Tudor finished the
season with 11 league
goals in 19 games, just
one behind top scorer
Alan Woodward. During
the promotion season of
1970-71, John scored some
important goals (notably
winners at Birmingham City
and at home to Sheffield
Wednesday) before being
controversially sold to
Newcastle United in
exchange for John Hope
and David Ford.
UNITED CASHBACK INITIATIVE
Tonight, on our United Cashback Initiative,
we would like to give a warm welcome to
Dronfield Town Stonelow U14s. Dronfield
Town currently play in the Sheffield
District Junior Football League in the C
Division and were formed in 2019, bringing
together disheartened young footballers
and those released from other teams.
After a successful first season playing
against other newly formed sides, they
were immediately promoted to B Division.
A promotion too soon, they suffered for
two seasons due to Covid, and were
relegated to C Division last season. They
started this season struggling for that
winning mentality, but they have now
returned to winning ways and are amongst
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
the teams challenging for promotion back
to B Division.
Dronfield Town Stonelow U14s play for
community grassroots club Dronfield Town
FC who have over 35 teams including
a men’s team, women’s team and girls’
and boys’ teams. As part of our United
Cashback Initiative, Dronfield Town can be
seen taking part in today’s pre-match flag
waving as the players come out onto the
pitch, and they have also raised funds for
their club to spend on anything they wish,
from new kit to new sports equipment, to
end of season presentation evenings –
the choice is theirs! We hope you all have
a fantastic day at Beautiful Downtown
Bramall Lane.

United had won 2-1 at the Riverside
earlier in the season, against a team which
included England legends Paul Merson
and Paul Gascoigne. In this reverse fixture
at Bramall Lane, the Blades again took the
spoils narrowly winning thanks to a single
goal from Dean Saunders in front of the
live Sky TV cameras.
United were masterful in their approach,
and responded magnificently to a cup
defeat to Newcastle United 48 hours
previously, whilst Boro were made to rue
missed opportunities, especially after
Merson failed to score from the penalty
spot. Hamilton Ricard was also guilty of
wasting chances after the Colombian twice
blasted over from a close range, and also
miss-kicked with the goal at his mercy.
The Blades netted the winner on 52
minutes. The home side were awarded
a free kick near the corner flag in front of
the Kop, and Wayne Quinn’s delivery saw
Lee Sandford’s header expertly saved by
‘keeper Mark Schwarzer before Saunders
stabbed home the loose ball.
Boro were handed an opportunity
to draw level on the hour mark after
Ricard was tripped in the box by David
Holdsworth. Merson stepped forward,
but his run up was rushed as he blasted
the ball high and wide. The visitors then
lost midfield maestro Gascoigne to a foot
injury with 15 minutes remaining.
United perhaps ought to have wrapped
the game up early but both Saunders
twice, and his strike partner Gareth Taylor
missed presentable opportunities to put
the game to bed.
ON THIS DAY
UTB looks back into the archives to find out what
happened on this day in United’s history…
FEBRUARY
15
Mid-table United put more
1975 pressure on struggling
Chelsea who were starting to look over
their shoulder after this defeat at Bramall
Lane. Goals from Alan Woodward and
Len Badger secured a 2-1 win, with United
going on to finish the season strongly,
ending the campaign sixth, whilst the
Blues were eventually relegated.
The Blades had to come
1997 from behind twice to earn a
priceless point in this second-tier clash
against leaders Bolton in a final game
between the two sides at Burnden
Park. Mixu Paatelainen’s early opener
was quickly cancelled out by Jan-Aage
Fjortoft before Chris Fairclough restored
the home side’s lead. Petr Katchouro’s
goal after the break earned a point as
United remained fourth, four points off
the automatic promotion places.
Neil Warnock’s Blades
2003 continued their remarkable
cup exploits after a 2-0 win over Walsall
ensured a place in the quarter-finals.
This game was significant for loanee
Tommy Mooney who scored his one
and only United goal to open the
scoring before Peter Ndlovu made it two
after the break. The Blades would go on
to defeat Leeds before losing to Arsenal
in the semi-finals.
WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Adrian Heath...
Stoke-born Adrian Heath began
his professional playing career
with hometown club Stoke City,
making his league debut in April 1978.
Adrian was able to play as an attacking
midfield player or up front. He had
a successful career winning League
Championship and FA Cup winning
medals with Everton who he had joined
in January 1982 for £700K. He also won
England U21 and B international honours
and was denied the chance of call up to
the full England squad when he suffered a
serious injury in December 1984.
As well as playing for Stoke City
and Everton, he also had spells with
Spanish club Espanyol, Aston Villa,
Manchester City and Burnley before
joining the Blades in mid-December
1995 as player/assistant manager. His
United appointment was as part of
new manager Howard Kendall’s team.
Kendall was very familiar with Heath’s
▲ Adrian pictured as Minnesota boss in 2022
UTB 51
qualities having managed him at Everton
and Manchester City and earlier in their
careers when Heath was a youngster at
Stoke and Kendall was the reserve team
player/coach.
Adrian made his league debut for
United as a substitute, ironically against
his former club Stoke City away in a
2-2 draw. In total he only made four
substitute appearances in the league for
United and a further one appearance as
a substitute in the FA Cup. He remained
with the Blades until March 1996 when
he accepted an offer from another former
club, Burnley, to become their player/
manager.
At Burnley, Adrian finally retired from
playing at the end of the 1996/97 season,
the same time he also left Burnley as
manager. He had guided them to ninth
in the old Second Division (now League
One). As a player he had played over 550
league games and scored 120 goals.
After a spell working as manager of
Sunderland reserves as part of Peter
Reid’s management team (his former
team-mate at Everton), Adrian made a
surprise return to Bramall Lane as the
Blades’ new manager in June 1999.
He faced a tough job at the Lane as the
club sold a lot of its better players such
as Alan Kelly, Marcelo and Lee Morris
to balance the books. His most notable
signings were defender Shaun Murphy
and striker Marcus Bent. With morale
low at the club and the team struggling,
Adrian resigned following a poor
performance in a 3-1 home defeat against
Port Vale in November 1999.
After leaving United, Adrian was again
appointed to posts within the managerial
teams of Peter Reid at both Leeds United
and Coventry City. At Coventry he had
two spells as caretaker boss, one in 2005
(following Peter Reid’s departure) and
▲ Unveiled as Blades boss in 1999
another in 2007, before he left the English
game to work in the USA.
His first post in the US was as manager
of Austin Aztex in February 2008. When
this club relocated to Florida to become
Orlando City, Adrian followed. He enjoyed
early success with Orlando winning titles
and cups. His work was recognised when
he was named Coach of the Year in both
2011 and 2012.
After his dismissal by Orlando in July
2016, Adrian was appointed as the head
coach at Minnesota United where he has
remained to this day.
SPURS HIT FOR SIX
This home game against Tottenham
Hotspur was quite possibly the most
extraordinary night in United’s Premier
League history.
Whilst not the most shot shy team
in the Premier League, United had
shown no real inclination that they had
the firepower to hit a side for six, even
with a prolific Brian Deane leading the
attack.
What makes the result even more
remarkable is the contrasting form of
the two sides. Spurs, after a difficult
start, were upwardly mobile by this
stage and went into the contest looking
for a sixth straight win which could have
potentially shifted them into fourth
position. United on the other hand
were still in the relegation zone with
just 12 games remaining, and had the
small matter of a FA Cup quarter-final at
Blackburn firmly on the horizon.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs MIDDLESBROUGH
Fair to say no-one was expecting a
home win, never mind a 6-0 trouncing!
One of United’s heroes on the night
was Ian Bryson, one of seven changes
made for the game following defeat to
Southampton.
The 1992-93 season proved to be
Bryson’s final campaign in red and
white, with this popular operator seeing
any chance of regular game time ended
by a series of injuries which would
eventually rule him out of contention
for United’s future Wembley showdown
with Wednesday.
Speaking to UTB in early 2021,
with these previously unseen quotes,
Bryson, who netted twice along with
goals from Andy Gray (og), Franz Carr,
Brian Deane and Paul Rogers, looked
back on this crazy game which would
prove to be his last hurrah in a Blades
career which began in 1988.
He said: “They had some really good
players like Teddy Sheringham, Darren
Anderton, Gary Mabbutt to name a few,
they were high class players, so it was a
great win for us.
“Dave Bassett was quite good in
getting results from certain games that
would really boost everyone. We were
in a situation where we were close to
the bottom before the game, but we
always had great belief in our ability.
“I had some great moments with
United, but I have to say the Tottenham
game was right up there. We got a great
start. You tend to try and keep things
tight for the first 10 minutes and then
start to become more adventurous.
We got a great goal, I think it was
something off the training field when
Franz Carr gave us the lead, he bent the
ball into the top right corner.
“We were a little fortunate with the
second. Brian crossed it and it ended
up in the back of their net off their own
player. I scored a couple, with one a
UTB 61
really good finish, and we never looked
back. I was thinking about my favourite
games, and there were many. I scored
a couple on my home debut when we
won 3-2, and Northampton was the next
one in the cup, and I scored a couple
again. The Wolves game when we
earned promotion was special, and the
next season when we were promoted
at Leicester. There were a couple
of games in the First Division when
I scored against Forest when we won at
Bramall Lane, that was the first win, and
then it was the Man Utd FA Cup win and
beating Wednesday. There is no doubt
this one with Spurs is right up there, it
was a special night.”
Thirty years later and the result is still
United’s biggest Premier League win
and Tottenham’s joint biggest Premier
League defeat.
It certainly will live long in the
memory of the 16,643 who were there,
as United secured a huge boost to their
survival hopes.
WHAT HAPPENED
THE STATE OF PLAY…
The first week in March included
six midweek fixtures which
would have a bearing on the
top and bottom of the Premier
much hanging on in the race
fight between Aston Villa and
Manchester United. At the
THE GAMES…
Middlesbrough had won just
one Premier League game since
December 5th meaning their
comfortable mid-table position
had quickly turned into a fight to
preserve their top flight status.
Prior to this game with Ipswich,
they had slumped to 21st, but
they managed to find a huge
win to defeat Ipswich at Portman
Road thanks to a Paul Wilkinson
strike. Fellow strugglers
Nottingham Forest and Crystal
Palace played out a 1-1 draw
with Gareth Southgate’s opener
quickly cancelled out by Roy
Keane. At the top end, Norwich’s
title challenge continued to
stutter when a late Ian Wright
goal earned Arsenal a point after
Ruel Fox had given Norwich
the lead. Elsewhere, Sheffield
Wednesday’s strong run of form
was ended after a 1-0 defeat to
HEADLINE ACT…
There is no question that United’s
PREMIER LEAGUE PRIMARY STARS
SUPPORTS LOCAL SCHOOLS
The Foundation’s Premier
League Primary Stars
programme inspires
primary school children
to become more active by
providing quality support
for schools in both the
classroom and in PE.
Since 2019, we have
been able to support over
300 teachers in over 100
schools across Sheffield.
One school that has
recently engaged with our
Primary Stars programme
is Greystones Primary
School. Beth Stevenson,
a Year 5 teacher at the
school, has found the
programme has had a big
impact on her confidence:
“When we first engaged
with Primary Stars, we’d
just come out of lockdown.
I hadn’t taught a PE lesson
in over 18 months, so
getting back into the flow
of teaching PE was quite
difficult for me. Working
with coach Rich Caley from
the Foundation has really
built my confidence as
Primary Stars has provided
me with different skills,
games and activities that
I can teach with any sport.
It’s been so useful.”
The PL Primary Stars
website (plprimarystars.
com) provides free
resources and tools for
teachers to use in PE and
in the classroom. The
site also features a free
newsletter for parents that
includes fun activities and
challenges to do at home.
Optimism is rising at
Middlesbrough as manager
Michael Carrick looks to guide
the club back to the Premier League.
The arrival of former Manchester
United and England midfielder Carrick
as Boro boss following the exit of Chris
Wilder in October sparked an instant
revival in a side that has struggled to
catch fire in the opening weeks of the
Championship season.
While managerial appointments
tend to produce a bounce in results,
sustaining that winning momentum
is often a challenge, yet Carrick has
managed that and his side arrive at
Bramall Lane this evening as strong
promotion contenders.
Middlesbrough have turned in some
impressive performances on their
travels this season and they will be
keen to add another this evening.
saved the club from liquidation before
succeeding Colin Henderson as chairman.
Swapping Ayresome Park for the Riverside
Stadium and the appointment of Robson in
1994 helped launch a revolution including
three Wembley final appearances within 12
months in 1997 and 1998.
UTB...
Traditionally supporters come from
Middlesbrough itself and towns in the
immediate area. Middlesbrough have one
of the highest proportions in Britain of
locally born season ticket holders at an
estimated 80%, and one of the highest
proportions of female fans at around 20%
at the last count.
A TV FIRST?
UTB 79
Middlesbrough claim to be the first football
club in the world to launch its own TV
channel – Boro TV. The first broadcasts
were tied to the club’s first ever major cup
final appearance in 1997, a full year ahead
of Manchester United’s MUTV, which still
claims to be the first in the world.
BOYS FROM BRAZIL...
Everyone will remember Juninho and
his bag of tricks and the unmistakeable
figure of Emerson and his
little jig in the ‘90s. But
Boro’s connections with
Brazil also throw up the
likes of 1994 World Cup
winner Branco, toughtackling
midfielder
Doriva and one-time
club record signing
Afonso Alves.
CONNECTIONS…
There have been many managerial
connections, the obvious and most
recent being Chris Wilder. Bryan Robson
and Neil Warnock also managed both
clubs, whilst Blades legend Brian Deane
was also a popular figure on Teesside
during his playing days. Former United
loanee Mo Besic also plied his trade at
the Riverside.
THE EX-FILES
David McGoldrick
EACH WEEK UTB CATCHES UP WITH THE PROGRESS OF SOME OF THE NAMES WHO ONCE
GRACED BRAMALL LANE, BUT ARE NOW CONTINUING THEIR CAREER ELSEWHERE…
David McGoldrick is off the mark
for his new club Derby County
after scoring a dramatic stoppage
time winner recently against
Peterborough United.
Trailing 1-0 and down to 10 men,
things looked bleak for the Rams
until an equaliser from Jason
Knight on 88 minutes was followed
up by McGoldrick’s winner from
12 yards.
After missing the first four games
of the campaign through injury,
McGoldrick is now finding his
feet at Pride Park after his highly
successful stint at Bramall Lane
came to an end at the conclusion
of last season.
“As a striker you enjoy your
goals, and especially when
they come as a winner as well,”
McGoldrick said of his first strike.
“We hadn’t scored for a few
games, so to get two right at the
end was nice. It was a pleasing day
all around and it’s always special
to turn it around late on.
“We are all together as one in
the dressing room and it helps with
the team bonding too, celebrating
together at the end, especially
as quite a few of us have come
through the door this summer.
The changing room was very
happy after.”
Grateful to be back fit again after
recovering from the injury which
curtailed his final season in S2, the
ex-Forest front man is now focused
on a strong run in the side.
He added: “I feel I am getting
fitter. I came here after a four or
five-month spell out, following an
operation. I’ve been building my
fitness up and I had a setback by
doing too much too soon, but now
I am building things up slowly.”
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
2,000 UP...
Although it is about six weeks ago that we beat Blackpool 2-1 at the seaside, it is still
worth noting that it was our 2,000th league victory in our 4,961st league game. Below
is a summary of each of our 250 landmark victories. As can be seen, our first 250
victories were the quickest, in terms of games played - 575, but our most recent 250
wins came a very close second quickest, taking just 576 games.
The Blackpool victory came after 4,961 games and by the end of the season we will
have played 4,982 league games. So game 18 next season will see another landmark
reached – our 5,000th league game.
QUICK TO 200
In our last programme it was mentioned that Ollie Norwood had reached his 200th
appearance for the Blades having missed only 13 possible games. I was asked if
anyone has reached his 200th United appearance quicker in terms of possible games
missed. There may be more than one other but Eddie Colquhoun’s record will take
some beating. Ignoring County Cup, Watney Cup and Texaco Cup appearances he
reached 200 club appearances (179 league,
7 FA Cup and 14 League Cup) having
missed just eight possible games. If the
other competitons are included (14 games)
he reached 200 appearances missing only
seven games.
If anyone knows of a player to have reached
his ‘200’ missing fewer games please let me
know on blades195451@yahoo.com
