NOVEMBER
The Day of the Dead in El
Salvador
The Day of the Dead, also known as the
Day of the Faithful Departed or Day of the
Dead is a Salvadoran tradition that takes
place on November 2 every year throughout
El Salvador to remember loved ones who
are no longer with us.
The tombstones are decorated with paper
flowers and bathed in melted beeswax to
obtain a hard complexion and better resist
the inclemencies, or with cypress wreaths
filled with artificial or natural flowers.
People visit the cemeteries very early in the
morning to bring flowers to their loved
ones, this is known as "enflorar". The
flowers are either natural or artificial. Some
people also bring musicians such as
mariachis to sing at the grave of the
deceased and in this way remember the
songs they liked. In most cemeteries there
are also special masses or services to
remember loved ones on this date.
Typical food is also eaten on this day.
Pupusas de chipilín, tamales, fried yucca or
holuelas con miel de panelas stand out in
these places. It is also customary to make
ayote in honey.
