A word from the Principal...
Dear families,
And just like that, it’s half term and halfway through the school year. This year is flying by and it’s
only going to seem to accelerate as we race towards the summer term where the extra-curricular
events come thicker and faster than ever!
This week our Y5 children have been living it up in ‘The Big Smoke’ as they headed to London for
their residential. As always, this trip was action-packed with trip to the museums, Houses of Parliament,
London Eye, Wicked at the theatre and much more. The children were wonderfully behaved,
representing the school brilliantly and earning many compliments from members of the public. I’d
like to extend my thanks to all of the staff involved in the planning and delivery of this trip, it is
much appreciated.
Finally, some question ideas to get the past the stock-response of ‘nothing’ from many childre when
asked about their school day:
• Tell me about the best part of your day.
• What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
• Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
• Tell me about what you read in class.
• Who did you play with today?
• What can you teach me that you learnt today?
Research shows that asking children about their learning and showing interest in their day has a
significant impact on how well they conduct themselves and achieve at school.
Have a great half term.
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

Outdoor Learning...
The pupils have been getting busy during their Outdoor Learning sessions over
the past two weeks. Fire has been a focus point for out session, exploring how
to prepare to build fires including using tools tools to split wood for kindling,
building fire, maintaining them, and best all, using them to make s’mores!
Marshmallows always seem to bring out big smiles! I’ve been really impressed
with the positive attitude shown by all children and particularly their knowledge
of fire safety. It’s been great to allow the children independence around the fire
and let them explore it safely.

EYFS
This week, Early Years have been learning about how to take care of the planet.
We read ‘Somebody swallowed Stanley’ and talked about why it’s important
to recycle. We also learnt about food chains. Lots of the children used recycled
materials to make kites and other exciting things!

Y1
Class 1 are continuing to learn about the 7 Continents and last week our focus
was on South America. They found out that football is the most popular sport
in Brazil and that there are lots of very interesting animals that live in the Amazon
Rainforest. The children made beautiful carnival masks and flags.
This week we looked at North America and what the USA is like. The children
learnt that it is called the United States because the country is split into 50
states. We looked at some famous landmarks: The Statue of Liberty, The White
House and Mount Rushmore.
This term in RE we are learning about Jewish celebrations and traditions. We
learnt about the Shema prayer and the celebration of Hanukkah. The children
made their Menorah candlesticks.

Y2
Year 2 have really enjoyed learning about shape in Maths. As a part of their
weekly challenges, the Year 2s had to sort 2D and 3D shapes as well as continuing
patterns using 2D shapes. It has been brilliant to see them remembering
so much of their learning and practising those skills during the challenges.
They also started learning about money this week and we have been thoroughly
impressed by how many coins the children recognised and how confident
they have been at making amounts of money using notes and coins.
In Art, the Year 2s have been getting to grips with digital art. They have learnt
about some very famous artists and their different styles. On the Chrome
books, they have had a go at creating different styles of art using a program
called Auto Draw. Lots of them found this really tricky to start with but they
have already developed their skills and are enjoying creating digital art. This
week, they have tested out taking a photo and using it to create pop art.
As a part of our topic, Year 2 have also been writing letters to Bob, the man on
the moon. We have learnt a lot about his job from one of our class books and
the children came up with questions that they would ask him about his work.
In their letters, we were so impressed with the fantastic questions and how
hard they worked on using the correct punctuation.
Well done Year 2!

Year 3 have continued to work really hard with their Stone Age topic work.
They have made Stone Age houses from clay and they had a great time visiting
and exploring an ancient village near Sancreed. They loved exploring the site
and imagining what life would have been like there. They have used this knowledge
to create their own Stone Age Village in a box. They have done a great
job completing their Stone Age stories and I have been really impressed with
the vocabulary they have used.
They have really enjoyed their sessions at Penzance Gymnastics club this half
term and the final foam pit session was a huge hit! Thank you to Jess and Lena
at the club for making our sessions so much fun!

Y4
Class 4 has had another amazing half term; working extremely hard in all areas
of the curriculum. The children have made excellent progress and this is
clear throughout their work. They’ve loved learning about Greek gods and goddesses.
In English they’ve all started to create their own Greek myth, I have
really enjoyed reading them all. In 3D art, they’ve all made their own ancient
Olympics vase that represents a sport from that time. In RE, they have been
learning about different ways that people worship, they all created lovely pieces
of writing. The children talked about the careers they might be interested in
pursuing in the future and the skills they would need for these roles; they created
great posters to demonstrate this. I hope you all have a lovely half term.

Y5
Year 5 have been busy on their London residential! Our three days have been
jam packed with so much excitement and happy memories. Some highlights of
the trip included a visit from our local MP Derek Thomas in the Houses of Parliament,
braving the London Eye and experiencing Wicked in the theatre.
The children have been so fantastic on the trip and have represented Ludgvan
School beautifully. We have had lots of lovely comments from members of the
public on how well the children have behaved (and how cool their green beanies
are!).

Y6
Year 6 have been studying Hinduism and focused on aspects of their beliefs,
such as: karma, dharma, moksha and their understanding that their souls experience
a cycle of life, death and reincarnation as another being. We had lots
of fun creating our very own board game, “Snakes and ladders - Hindu version”,
which required the players to go through the 100-square grid, allowing
for their dharma to be fulfilled, which ultimately allowed them to achieve moksha
once the number 100 was surpassed. There were some fantastic designs
and ideas for aspects of Hinduism that could replace the traditional snakes and
ladders.
In English, we have begun to write our eerie stories by creating a powerful,
descriptive introduction. We have attempted to use figurative language such
as pathetic fallacy and personification, as well as powerful vocabulary to really
entice a reader into the story.
In maths, we are finishing off our unit relating to decimals and fractions. The
class have been doing an amazing job with this difficult concept.
Super work year 6!
