COVER STORY
CANADIAN CANOE MUSEUM
EXPERIENCE A VOYAGEUR CANOE TOUR
by Joanne Culley
Not a paddler? That’s not a problem, just bring
your sense of adventure to the many activities
offered by the Canadian Canoe Museum this
summer.
Down at the Peterborough Liftlock, the museum’s
voyageur canoe tours take guests for paddles up
and over the Liftlock north along the Trent-Severn
Waterway for a 90-minute fun and engaging ride
suitable for all ages and abilities. Scheduled
tours are available on weekends and custom
tours can also be booked for up to 20 people by
emailing paddle@canoemuseum.ca or by calling
705-748-9153 ext. 218.
Come visit the museum itself to learn about the
importance of the canoe and kayak to not only
the local area but to the history of Canada. The
museum has the largest collection of its kind and
displays more than 100 canoes and kayaks ranging
from First Nations’ dugouts and Beothuk bark
canoes to canvas canoes made in Peterborough.
These are all part of interactive, hands-on galleries,
and engaging exhibits. Drop-in family friendly
programming will be happening all summer, with
a calendar of events at canoemuseum.ca.
Currently on display is Just Add Water: Little Boats
with BIG Stories featuring canoes from noteworthy
people, including Robert Bateman’s Minto canoe
and Gordon Lightfoot’s canary yellow canoe,
along with a Fijian Takia boat, and the stories
behind these vessels.
Meanwhile, the museum is planning for its
new facility at the water’s edge, estimated for
completion in 2022.
“We’re excited to be at 60 percent of our
fundraising goal for the new building, having
12 Kawartha Visitor Guide :: Summer 2019

ecently received an incredible $10 million grant
from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund,” says
Carolyn Hyslop, Executive Director. “At our current
location, visitors can view the architectural plans
for the new museum and via our web site, they can
‘fly through’ the new facility.”
Some spaces are still available for their Summer
Paddling Adventure day camps and multi-day
canoe trips for youth age 8 to 14, where campers
learn skills from Ontario Recreational Canoeing
and Kayaking Association-certified instructors
in a fun, safe and supportive environment while
interacting with nature, developing their paddling
skills and enjoying the lakes and rivers in the
Kawarthas.
“You’ll see us popping up at community events
this summer, including the Peterborough Pulse
street festival, the Muskoka Heritage Boat Show in
Gravenhurst and local farmer’s markets – be sure
to come over and say hello,” says Hyslop.
The museum is located at 910 Monaghan Road. For
WORLD'S
LARGEST
T-REX
AT INDIAN RIVER
REPTILE ZOO
If you’ve been listening to the news lately,
you are aware that the world’s largest
Tyrannosaurus rex was discovered in
Canada. Last March, the Royal Museum of
Saskatchewan announced that they were
ready for the public to view “Scotty,“ the
world’s largest Tyrannosaurus rex. This
means that “Scotty” is now the world’s
largest T-Rex and “Sue,” who is on
display at the Chicago Museum,
has moved to second place.
Sue is 44 feet long and Scotty is
45 feet long, but both are fossils
of the dinosaur bones and look
a little on the skinny side, even
though Scotty once weighed
over 400 pounds more than Sue
did, at about 10,000 pounds.
The Indian River Reptile and Dinosaur Park has
now “cloned” and added flesh and skin to both
Sue and Scotty to create life-size animatronic
dinosaurs that now move and roar!
“We are calling them ‘Scott’ and ‘Susan’ since
they are now mature and dignified,” says Ted
Loyst, zoo spokesman. “Both are over 60 million
years old. They are waiting at our Dinosaur
Park for you and your family to visit. Bring your
camera. There are now over 60 dinosaurs at
Indian River Reptile and Dinosaur Park as well
as dozens of live alligators and crocodiles and
hundreds of turtles, lizards and snakes.”
The Indian River Reptile and Dinosaur Park
is Canada’s only non-profit zoological reptile
facility and sanctuary and the only registered
non-for-profit institution of its kind in North
America, providing care for unwanted and
abandoned reptiles. The sanctuary offers
educational fun for the whole family.
Enjoy the “croc-walk,” if you dare. Walk over
six geothermal heated ponds teaming with
crocodilian. Go on a bone dig, the giant gator slide
or have some fun putting on their new 18-hole
championship mini-golf course “Standing Stones.”
They are open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all summer long
from June 1 to September 30, including holidays This
not-for-profit, registered charity appreciates your
support and accepts donations. They are located
on Highway 7 just 15 km east of Peterborough. For
more information, please call 705-639-1443 or go to
PETERBOROUGH
MUSEUM & ARCHIVES
BLOCKBUSTER EXHIBITION
For the first time in its history, the Peterborough
Museum & Archives (PMA) is hosting what is
considered a blockbuster exhibition. On loan
from the Canadian Museum of Nature is, "Ice Age
Mammals" – a national travelling exhibition that
explores themes of climate change and biology.
This exhibition is making its final stop at the PMA
before being taken off the market for refurbishment,
meaning this will be one of the final opportunities
to see all that "Ice Age Mammals" has to offer.
In the exhibition, one can expect to see a variety
of fossils and specimens including a real mammoth
tusk, muskox furs, interactive learning stations,
skulls of various mammals, and a skeleton cast of a
mastodon! What makes this exhibition a blockbuster
is the appeal that it will have to non-traditional
museum visitors. It will provide an opportunity for
local residents and tourists to the area to not only
learn about the mammals that survived the ice age,
and those that didn’t, but also to explore themes
of global challenges related to climate change. This
is a priority message of the City of Peterborough,
and through this exhibition, the museum is able to
share the goals of sustainability in a non-traditional
forum, shedding light on the natural environment
of today through the lens of the past.
"Ice Age Mammals" is also physically larger than
any other on-loan exhibition hosted at the PMA,
meaning there is more to see in the museum. Part of
what has made this possible is a series of renovations
that began in 2010 and concluded in 2017. The
Museum Renewal Project included rejuvenation of
all public spaces, the construction of a 9,000-squarefoot
storage facility, and improvements made to
preservation and exhibition environments. The
completion of this construction project increased
the number of opportunities the PMA can leverage
when thinking about programming and booking
exhibitions. "Ice Age Mammals" is the PMA's first
kick-at-the-can hosting a blockbuster exhibit, with
(hopefully) more to come in the future!
GALLERY ON THE LAKE
WORLD CLASS ART
by Joanne Culley
Did you know that truly exceptional Canadian art
is available at Buckhorn’s Gallery on the Lake?
"Finding this great art will deliver a truly
remarkable experience, you will be impressed
by our incredible collection,” says Esther Inglis,
owner of Gallery on the Lake, a 15,000 sq. ft.
gallery located on Lower Buckhorn Lake.
Set amidst the rocks and trees of the Canadian
Shield, the Gallery on the Lake is one of Canada's
largest retail art galleries and offers a wide
selection of original, affordably priced art by
Canadian artists.
Along with paintings in the traditional media
such as oil, watercolour and acrylic, the gallery
offers handmade jewellery, pottery, glassware,
woodturnings, bronze and soapstone sculpture.
Painting styles range from traditional to
contemporary and semi-abstract, in a variety of
subject matter and media.
During the last few years, the gallery has been
cementing its reputation as a destination , for
WORLD CLASS ART. And this year’s line-up of
world class exhibits will only enhance that hardearned
reputation” declares Inglis. “This year we are
launching another season of spectacular exhibits.”
Upcoming exhibits include:
From now until June 28: John Lennard and Eddie
Lepage’s exhibit entitled “Natural Elements” Both
these veterans in the Canadian Art Scene provide
distinct and recognizable subject matter, from
John’s colourful yet serene landscapes to Eddie’s
highly detailed tree-limbs; wildlife and rushing
waters.
June 29 to August 2: Christian Morrisseau is
the youngest son of Canada’s most famous
indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau and the
only family member who paints in the Woodland
style of his father, learning his craft at his father’s
knee. Original paintings will be yours to view and
own at this memorable exhibit.
August 3 to August 30. One of our most
prominent artists is Tim Packer who has earned
a solid reputation as one of Canada’s foremost
contemporary artists. His trademark “sun
through the trees” images are highly sought
after, depicting Northern Landscape scenes from
Lake Superior, Algoma and the Kawarthas. His
work is collected in Canada, the United States
and Worldwide.
August 31 to September 27: Elena Henderson ‘s
bold dramatic florals will be featured as the fall
season begins. The perfect time for something
dramatic and different to liven up your space.
NEW HOBART’S LIGHTHOUSE
RESTAURANT OPENS ON STONY LAKE
By Joanne Culley
Hobart’s is pleased to announce the opening
of their third location, on Stony Lake in Harbour
Town, McCracken’s Landing.
“We invite everyone to visit us by land or water
to experience exceptional food, atmosphere
and service in our casual dining restaurant,” says
Wesley Found, General Manager of Hobart’s.
They’re open all week, except Tuesdays, serving
brunch on the weekends and holiday Mondays,
with omelettes, Eggs Benedict, and waffles, lunch
with panini sandwiches, burgers and wraps,
dinners with meats, seafood, fish, vegetarian
options and more.
Our goal at Hobart’s Lighthouse is to create a
community feeling where all are welcome - locals,
cottages and visitors alike,” continues Found.
“We like to describe the food as blending longstanding
traditions with new culinary trends, from
comfort food to upscale pub food.
People can come in for a classic burger and beer,
or enjoy a celebratory meal with an expensive
bottle of wine and a high-quality steak.”
Passionate about his craft for more than three
decades, Executive Chef Scott Hudson has
taught in college culinary programs and worked
in restaurants across the country as far north as
Nunavut. He and his team create a fusion style of
food, with a little bit of everything – Italian, Asian,
vegetarian, vegan, along with the signature steaks
that Hobart’s is known for.
“We’re fresh obsessed, sourcing high-quality
ingredients for all of our dishes, which are 100
percent made in-house,” says Hudson.
Chef Hudson adds that they like to create a
“humble table” relaxed atmosphere for their
guests with the best patio in town. Every table has
a view overlooking the lake.
Hobart’s Lighthouse is located at 2281 McCracken’s
Landing Rd, 1-705-652-0557 and is open for the
season until October 15. The other two locations
are 139 Hunter Street West in Peterborough and 189
BEACHES
IN THE KAWARTHAS
In Anishnabe, Kawartha means “bright waters and
happy lands”. Many love to experience its clear,
deep lakes and sparkling rivers by swimming or
sitting on the many beautiful, sandy beaches found
in the region. On the hot summer days that we wait
for all year long, there is nothing more refreshing
than a dip in the cool waters of the Kawartha lakes.
Why not take a break, pack a picnic, and gather up
your family and friends to enjoy a relaxing day at
the beach? Here are just a few of the many places
in the area where visitors can unwind:
• The public beach at Sandy Lake, located at 1247
Lakehurst Rd. just west of Buckhorn is popular
with families because of its clear, shallow waters.
• Ennismore Waterfront Park on Chemong Lake
has a sandy beach and picnic pavilion, as well
as an interpretive trail network with an osprey
viewing platform and boardwalks.
• Selwyn Conservation Area on Chemong Lake
north of Bridgenorth has a sandy beach with
picnic tables and shelters as well as a nature
trail wending through the park.
• Lakefield Beach is located in the Lakefield Park
and Campground on the southwest shore of
Lake Katchewanooka, which means “water of
many rapids” in Anishinabe.
• Beavermead Park and Rogers Cove Beach,
both on Little Lake in Peterborough, offer
opportunities for swimming and boating as
well as playgrounds for children.
• On Balsam Lake, visitors can swim at the
sandy beach at Balsam Lake Provincial Park on
Highway 48 and enjoy the day-use picnic and
playground facilities,
• Birch Point beach located on Birch Point Road
on Balsam Lake has a 15 metre, grassy strip of
beach that is open to the public for swimming,
along with A popular rope swing
• Garnet Graham Park on Cameron Lake offers
public swimming, picnicking and a playground,
and is located at the end of Bond and Francis
Street in Fenelon Falls.
• The beach at Silent Lake Provincial Park, north
of Apsley on Highway 28, offers vistas of the
rocks and forests of the Canadian Shield. It is
indeed silent, as no motorboats are allowed in
the park.
• The shallow waters of the Indian River at the
Warsaw Caves Conservation Area are suitable for
young swimmers. Visitors can also camp, canoe,
hike on 13 km of trails or explore the series of
seven caves during their stay in the park.
• Emily Provincial Park near Omemee has two
sandy beaches on the Pigeon River for visitors
to enjoy. Buoys mark the swimming areas and
pets are not allowed.
ELECTRIC BIKES FOR ALL
Two new Pedego
Kawartha Lakes
stores offer the
Pedego line of
electric bikes, in
14 models, for
all ages, from
touring and
mountain bikes, to
three-wheel trikes
and cargo bikes.
“I really like the Pedego brand of e-bikes, because
of their price point and high quality, but when
I tried to buy one in the Kawartha Lakes area
a couple of years ago, I couldn’t find one, so I
decided to open up my first store in Bobcaygeon
a year ago,” says Allen Hussey, owner. “That has
proved to be so successful that I decided to open
another one in Lindsay this year.”
well as a full line of Scott and KHS traditional bikes.
“We can adjust the bike to suit any rider, moving
the height of the seat and changing the size of
seat to accommodate different weights. They
come in a variety of colours, with fenders and
other accessories,” he continues.
Pedego also offers cycling tours in various parts of
the world including USA, France, Western Canada,
and hopefully in Kawartha Lakes later this year.
When asked about the appeal of e-bikes, Hussey
says, “I’m in my 60s and I find it easier to use an
e-bike for going up hills, but they’re also good
for parents keeping up to their kids when they’re
on a ride. You can use it like a normal bike, in the
pedaling mode, then shift to the electric assist,
by pressing down on the pedal when it’s needed.
Come in and go for a ride through the picturesque
Kawartha Lakes area – demos are always free!”
The stores are located at 47 William St. in
Bobcaygeon, and 66 William St. N. in Lindsay,
offering sales, service and rentals of e-bikes, as
VICTORIA STATION LINDSAY
Maintenance-Free Adult
Lifestyle Condominiums
The Railway Lands in the heart of downtown
Lindsay offers the finest in condominium living
for empty-nesters and those who have time to
stop and smell the roses.
The father and son team of Don and Mark
Wilson have opened up their next condominium
development, Victoria Station, a six-storey midrise
condo development, on the Railway Lands
in Lindsay. Victoria Station will host 104 suites
in a selection of one-and-two bedroom designs,
ranging from 857 to 1387 sq. ft., offering your
choice for the finest in downtown living.
“This thoughtfully planned condominium will
feature eight different models offering modern
open concept layouts and finishes, glass
balconies and terraces,” says Cheryl Wilkinson,
Sales & Marketing Representative with MVW
Construction & Engineering. “Each condo has its
own ensuite laundry, for convenience.”
“The new Victoria Station adult-lifestyle
condominiums offer the best of both worlds
- all the benefits of home ownership without
the worry of repairs or maintenance,” continues
Wilkinson. “Owners will be able to choose from
a selection of finishes, bringing their taste and
style to their new home. We encourage people
to register and reserve their suites now, as our
previous development, our Union Station phase,
has sold out.”
The Victoria Station building, located between
Glenelg and Melbourne Streets on Victoria
Avenue, will feature a large ground floor lobby,
secure entrance, underground parking, storage
lockers, a guest suite, top floor lounge, and
exercise room. Architectural design and details
will resemble Union Station where the quality
and workmanship speak for itself.
“Victoria Station is in the heart of historic
downtown Lindsay, a short walk to shopping
and all your day-to-day needs, fine dining, the
farmers’ market, and free concerts at Victoria
Park,” continues Crawford. “And, of course, it’s
close to Kawartha cottage country. It is truly
a location where you can live, work and play,
offering all the excitement and serenity of small
town living.”
Known as the gateway to the Kawartha Lakes,
Lindsay offers residents live theatre, beautiful
parks, boating and other recreation on the
Trent-Severn Waterway. Unique shops, walking
paths and a recreational centre provide
opportunities to fill your day, and modern
health care facilities are close when needed.
Not far from cottage country and the serene
setting of farms and open fields, the hub of The
Kawarthas is an easy drive to Peterborough,
Oshawa or Toronto.
TRENT HILLS & CAMPBELLFORD
100 YEAR OLD TRADITION
At Empire, our cheese is made in the
traditional way in open-style vats. In our
opinion, this gives the cheese and curd a
better flavour. We use no additives to boost
production, and there are no flavours added
to our cheddar. It is all natural, with no added
preservatives.
After production, the cheese is naturally aged in
cold storage, cut and vacuum packaged in our
modern facilities to preserve the flavour. A true
mix of tradition and modern technology to give
our customers a better product!
Empire Cheese Factory also offers a wide
selection of gift baskets and boxes in a range of
prices, which feature a selection of our famous
cheese, with various quality biscuits, jams,
honey, candy and maple syrup.
Please ask us about fundraising opportunities.
