It has been a difficult year for Iranian people. I have personally struggled with my mental health. Like many, my sanity is constantly challenged by the neverending reports of unspeakable horrors that have befallen Iranian citizens. Music has played a central role in allowing me to ground myself and process the weight of grief that challenges me each day. Contrary to the stereotype held by some that Persian music is futile melancholy, I must say music has not been a form of defeatist escape for me, but rather, a way to heal, regroup, and recenter so that I can continue on my path: So that I can embrace my grief, move past it, become whole and then help people in need in ways that I am capable. In this spirit I wanted to share a segment from an improvisatory performance with my brother Witness Matlou that I have titled “lamentations.” May it be a tool for reflection, re-centering, coping, and healing in the new year so that we may all function with love and at our fullest potential.
