Old Members’ Activities
The second phase of Access All Areas is off to a strong start, despite some brisk
headwinds from the later stages of the pandemic and then wider geopolitical
and economic uncertainty. In 2021-22 the College received £2,338,400 from 626
Old Members and Friends. Included within this total are legacy gifts of £1.25M,
which is a testament to the important impact the Taberdars’ Society and every
one of those who have remembered the College in their will continue to have
on the College’s present and future. In the case of the legacy received from
The Revd George Vincent (Literae Humaniores, 1904), who passed away in 1971,
we were heartened to see that his gesture of remembrance to the College was still
able to be felt more than 50 years later. A legacy gift from Celia Gould, niece of
Cyril Vysove (Modern Languages, 1942), was received to create and permanently
endow the Cyril Vysove Scholarship in Modern Languages. This will be awarded to
an incoming DPhil Modern Language student and the first Vysove Scholar will join
Queen’s next academic year.
In addition to these legacy gifts, the following major gifts of note were received by
the College in the 2021-22 academic year:
• A joint gift from Dr Ken Fisher (Chemistry, 1955), Dr Bob Feinberg (DPhil
Organic Chemistry, 1961) and an anonymous Old Member donor to create and
endow the Acheson-Hill Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry. This scholarship
has been endowed to commemorate in perpetuity the contributions of longtime
Chemistry tutors Morrin Acheson and Allen Hill to their students and to
Queen’s. The first Acheson-Hill Scholar will join Queen’s in academic year
2023-24.
• Two anonymous major gifts from Old Members to support the College’s
partnership with The Access Project in the northwest and an anonymous
major gift from an Old Member to support the continued endowment of the
Centenary Visiting Professorship in PPE.
In 2021-22 Governing Body was also able to recognise key milestones in the amount
of lifetime support received from individual Old Members and Friends. Governing
Body was pleased to elect two new Eglesfield Benefactors (in recognition of lifetime
giving of £100,000 and above) and ten new Philippa Benefactors (in recognition of
lifetime giving of £10,000 and above). They are grateful and pleased to be able to
bestow these important Benefactorships on those Old Member and Friends whose
lifetime giving has merited special recognition.*
