How to see Rome in a day

The Eternal City wasn’t built in a day, so we never suggest only

spending one day in the city on your next Italian vacation. But, if

you’ve only got 24 hours, you can still taste authentic Roman living,

see some sights, and indulge in decadent eats that will make you

start planning your next trip before even leaving!

Enjoy our detailed itinerary for couples and families, and enjoy

what we think is the perfect day in Rome.

24 HOURS IN ROME FOR COUPLES AND FAMILIES 24 HOURS IN ROME FOR COUPLES AND FAMILIES

Itinerary for a couple

8:30 AM: The day will be jam packed, so after exiting the train station at

Roma Termini, we always recommend pausing for a sweet Italian breakfast.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do and head to Regoli for a steaming hot

cappuccino and maritozzo, a classic sweet bun spit open and topped with

whipped cream.

9:00 AM: Around the corner is Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore, one

of the four papal basilicas in the city. Take some time marveling at the marble

columns and gold covered ceiling that dates back to 432.

10:00 AM: Walk down via Cavour and cut through Monti for a taste of early

morning Roman life. This historic yet hipster district is lined

with quaint bars, picturesque vias, and one of a kind vintage

shops.

SHOPPING IN MONTI

romeing.it/shopping-in-monti/

11:00 AM: A day in Rome wouldn’t be properly spent without visiting one

of its worldly attractions. So let’s visit the one that takes the

gold medal: the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Spend a

few hours wandering by yourself or participate in one of our

Colosseum tours.

COLOSSEUM TOURS

romeing.it/shop/product-category/rome-tours/colosseum-tours/

1:00 PM: By now, it is lunchtime, so who is hungry? Head towards the

Jewish ghetto and snag a spot at Giggetto, a classic 3rd generational eatery

for some Roman fare. Save room for dessert because you absolutely cannot

leave this charming quartiere without a stop at Pasticceria Boccione for a

slice of cherry ricotta pie.

2:30 PM: After a leisurely lunch and an hour or so of rest, lace up your

walking shoes because we are headed to the center of town. Cut through

Campo de Fiori and catch a glimpse of the bustling market.

4:00 PM: Coffee and a gelato break, anyone? Around the corner from the

Pantheon is Giolitti. Established in 1900, this gelateria is arguably the city’s

most well-known gelateria that never disappoints.

4:30 PM: After a quick sweet pick-me-up, make your way towards Piazza

di Spagna and climb the stairs to the Pincio Terrace for a sweeping view of

Rome that is worth a thousand words.

6:00 PM: After a beautiful golden hour, walk along the river or hail a cab and

head towards Trastevere. Get lost amongst the color, noise, and graffiti that

make this neighbourhood unique. There are also great boutiques not to miss

out on!

7:00 PM: Enjoy aperitivo local style at Bar Calisto or at Cvlto. If wine is more

your style with an even more chill environment, try Enoteca

L’Antidoto or check out our list of bars in Trastevere.

BEST BARS IN TRASTEVERE

8:00 PM: Every night can be a pizza night in Rome! There are a handful of

local joints along the streets but don’t fall victim to the tourist traps! Snag

a table at Ivo a Trastevere or Pizzeria Marmi for a real Roman Experience.

Before the main course, order a plate of fritti misti and a cold beer.

10:00 PM: On your way home, cross over Ponte Sisto and get lost in the

Vatican’s twinkly lights from a distance.

7:00 am: Wake up early and head to the Vatican before

leaving town! Prefer traveling in comfort? Discover our

transfer services.

3:00 PM: The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain are all within

a short radius from one another. Pay a visit to all three, the crowds will surely

guide you, and don’t forget to make a wish by throwing a coin in the Trevi

Fountain!

9:00 AM: An early wake-up call requires caffeine and something sweet to

kick-start the day. Even if your kids don’t drink coffee, they can enjoy nutella

other specialities which Italian kids indulge in each morning.

ROME BREAKFAST GUIDE

3:00 PM: Take a stroll down Via del Corso, Rome’s shopping haven,

and browse amongst some independent designers and boutiques.

After a few purchases, hit Piazza di Spagna followed by Piazza del

Popolo, one of Rome’s largest urban squares with its symbolic twin

churches.

4:00 PM: If your family enjoys green space, above the piazza is Villa

Borghese, Rome’s third largest public landscaped park. There are

lakes, rides, a museum, and even a zoo!

5:00 PM: After much needed fresh air away from the hustle and

bustle, head towards Prati and climb through the city’s castle,

fountain. Let the sounds of water and crowds guide you. Toss a coin, make a

wish, and then enjoy a gelato break afterwards!

6:00 PM: Overlooking the castle shines the Vatican City! Cruise

around St. Peter’s Square, or if the lines are short enough before

closing at 7:00, self-guide yourselves through St Peter’s Basilica.

7:30 PM: The day is almost over, but not until your family indulges

in some classic Roman cuisine: think carbonara, cacio e pepe,

and amatriciana. Some favorites include Armando al Pantheon, Da

Alfredo, or Da Gino al Parlamento. Tables fill up quickly, so be sure

to make a reservation!

9:00 PM: If you didn’t enjoy a tiramisu after dinner (which we

always recommend), head for another gelato before heading home

and parting ways with the Eternal City bright and early the next

morning.

The Vatican Museums are one of the most important international museum

centres. Here you can admire some of the most prestigious historical collections

and some of the world’s masterpieces. Giotto, Raphael, Michelangelo, Caravaggio

and Leonardo are just some of the names in the Vatican. Here is a list of what you

mustn’t miss in the museum complex.

The Sistine Chapel

With frescoes unparalleled beauty, the Sistine

Chapel hosts some of the greatest painters,

such as Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino,

Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli…

who was commissioned to paint the vault giving

the place the highest form of artistic expression.

Raphael’s Rooms

The Raphael Rooms (le Stanze di Raffaello)

were part of the flat chosen by Pope Julius

II della Rovere as his residence and located

on the second floor of the Papal Palace. The

pictorial decoration of the Stanze was carried

out by Raphael Sanzio and his pupils. The

Stanze are: Hall of Constantine, Room of the

Segnatura, Heliodorus’ room and the Room of

the Fire in Borgo.

Room VIII

Room VIII, is one of the most significant rooms

of the Pinanoteca. The room is dedicated to

Raphael and houses three of the great artist’s

altarpieces and tapestries. A warm but soft light

illuminates the beauty, colors, and materials of

each of the works. It also creates an intimate

and welcoming environment where each visitor

is invited to pause in silence and meditation.

CARNEVALE ROMANO: THE STORY OF ROME’S CARNIVAL

Origins of Roman Carnival

Carnevale Romano:

The Story of Rome’s Carnival

From Saturnalia to Rome’s Carnevale Today

p

Sonja Anderson

Saturnalia suspended work and business, temporarily

“freed” slaves, and eased moral restrictions. Saturn

was the Roman god of agriculture, and the festivities

honoring him involved decorative masks, rituals and

drunken parties.

The festival was adopted in the age of Catholicism

with a few adaptations. As early as 1143 AD, the Pope

held ceremonies in today’s Testaccio neighborhood

of Rome. These included jousting, duels, and hunting.

However, it wasn’t until Pope Paul II came to power and

relocated his residence to Piazza Venezia that Carnevale

truly took off. The Carnival festivities moved there with him,

making Via Lata (now Via del Corso) a natural setting for the most

anticipated events of the Carnival: the Inaugural Parade and the Race of the Barbary Horses.

Via del Corso: track of the Berber horse race

Carnival is celebrated all around the world, but like “all

roads,” it likely has roots in Rome. Now a Roman Catholic

celebration, Carnival takes place in the days before Lent, the

40-day period in which Catholics abstain from a chosen vice

(the word Carnevale comes from carnovale, which means

“removal of meat”). However, Carnival probably started as

the pagan Saturnalia festival of ancient Rome.

Via del Corso was the central racetrack of Carnival. The races started in Piazza del Popolo

and stretched down Via del Corso, ending at Piazza Venezia. There were races for children,

elderly people, donkeys and buffaloes. One pope, Alexander VI Borgia, even introduced a race

of prostitutes in 1501. Of all the competitions, the Barbary horses created the most chaos. La

Corsa dei Berberi, “The race of the Berbers,” focused on a specific breed, known as the Berber

horse, or Barb horse, which was bred prolifically in ancient Rome for its strength, stamina and

speed. Those qualities made the animals the ideal chariot horses for competitors in Circus

Maximus. Their reputation carried on into the Roman Catholic Carnival.

Noble families contributed male Berber horses to participate in the race and braided colorful

ribbons into their manes. Spectators gathered at Piazza del Popolo to watch the preparation of

the horses and make wagers. Uninhibited by riders, the horses galloped about a mile, finishing

in Piazza Venezia, where the owners of the winning horse were presented with a decorative

saddle.

CARNEVALE ROMANO: THE STORY OF ROME’S CARNIVAL

Modern celebrations of Carnival across Italy

The equine race was abolished in 1874 by King Vittorio Emanuele II after a lethal accident,

and since then, Rome’s Carnival festivities have gone mostly dormant. The spirit of the

carnival, however, survives today through special celebrations such as those organised by

cultural associations like “Il Carnevale Romano Storico”. This association operates in the fields

of cultural promotion and strives to preserve the tradition of the Roman Carnival.

Due to the pandemic, the last celebration of Carnival was held three years ago, but the

celebrations organized in previous years have included theater performances, historical

reenactments, the famous equestrian parade, fireworks, street art performances, concerts,

and masquerade balls.

The modern carnival has even included the famous Candles Feast or “Festa dei moccoletti”,

a group game which used to conclude the Roman Catholic Carnival. The feast took place

at sunset on the evening of Mardì Gras. Participants wore decorative masks and carried

a lit candle or a lantern, trying to maintain their flame while simultaneously attempting to

extinguish other participant’s lanterns. If your flame went out, you were forced to take off your

mask. Today in Rome, you might see some costumed and masked characters around Piazza

Navona and Via del Corso, but the holiday is mostly celebrated by children in school. Shrove

Tuesday, or Martedì Grasso, falls on February 21 this year, so look out for Carnival festivities

leading up to that date. Try popular Carnival foods like castagnole, the famous sugar-coated

fried dough balls, or snack on frappe, which are crunchy strips of fried dough dusted with

powdered sugar.

The best cities in Italy

for Carnevale

p

Elisa Fernandez-Arias

February … it’s that time of the year

where everyone is wearing masks,

dressed to the nines, celebrating an old

Italian tradition: Carnevale. Rome,

unfortunately, doesn’t have the best Carnevale

scene, but there are plenty of other

places that do.

Venice

a 1 4 – 21 February

Venice is the first place we think

of when we think of Carnevale.

Situated in the northeast of Italy,

this dreamlike city is made up of

117 islands that are connected by

bridges that cross canals. The effect?

Moonlight reflecting on the water.

Fog rising in the night that gives the

streetlights halos. Slip on your mask

and into a gown, attend a grand ball,

and walk through the ornate streets

at night, carousing with strangers

and friends.

THE BEST CITIES IN ITALY FOR CARNEVALE

Ivrea

a 1 16 – 21 February

For a historical Carnival experience, head

to Ivrea, a town near Turin in northern

Italy. Don’t miss the Battle of the Oranges,

a historically-themed spectacle depicting

the liberation of the town’s people from

a tyrant king a thousand years ago. In

addition to this spectacle, which any

history buff would appreciate, there are

historical costumed characters throughout

the city and crowds wearing Phrygian

caps, representing freedom. Other events

are children’s parties and gala balls

4 – 21 February

The city of Acireale hosts what has been voted the most

beautiful carnival in Sicily, and there is a reason for this.

Acireale boasts one of the oldest carnival traditions on the

island, with papier-mâché floats using a combination of lights,

flowers and hydraulic systems. If you want to be amazed by

endless beauty, not only of the floats but also of the island itself,

this is the place to be. Some events: musical performances, street

performers (e.g. magicians and acrobats).

4,12,19,21,25 February

In Putignano (Apulia) the celebrations seem never-ending!

Four parades, with not only the typical papier-mâché

floats but also masked dancers. The different historical

social classes are represented in and protagonists of

the festivities: clerics, priests, widowers, young savages,

married women and married men... at the end of the

celebrations, fake priests run around the city shouting

‘Carnival is dead!’. Some events: visits to wine cellars,

readings of poetic satire, art exhibitions.

Viareggio is a colourful seaside town, which means that the

Carnival celebrations take place right on its shores. Most

famous is the parade of papier-mâché floats; but this is just

month, including night festivals, fireworks displays and cultural,

artistic and gastronomic events.

Valentine’s Day Ideas

That’ll Impress Your Date

Valentine’s day is at the doors and many of us are still trying to figure

out what to do. But we live in the mecca of love… so give one of these a

try, it can’t be too hard to impress your date.

A romantic dinner

The Roman restaurant scene has prepared some special

menus for Valentine’s Day 2023.

Riccardo Loreni, the chef of Cuoco e Camicia in Monti,

has created a “Fish and Chili” tasting menu in which each

fish dish is paired with a different chili pepper (€70).

Aqualunae Bistrot is also not to be missed, with its chef,

Emanuele Paoloni, who will dedicate Valentine’s Day to a tasting

menu to be enjoyed inside the bistro (€83, plus wine pairing €29).

At the iconic Eden Hotel, the Executive Chef Fabio Ciervo has created two ad hoc

curation initially comes as a surprise, it is nevertheless a nice one. The marble statue steals

the show, as soft lights flatter each fine detail of the veiled body while the dark machinery

behind creates a strong contrasting backdrop. To avoid losing the art’s voice to the factory’s

atmosphere, the figure is placed front and center on a high pedestal, demanding the attention

that a Greek goddess of beauty deserves.

The papal train that was built for Pope Pius IX in 1858 can be found in one of the two boiler

rooms on the ground floor. The other boiler room now tells the story of the late 19th-century

urban transformation and the 20th-century Fascist period, using informational panels. The

machinery on this floor literally fills the time gap between these two movements in Rome’s

history, as the plant was opened by The Municipal Electric Company, now Acea, in 1912

and later closed in the mid-1960s. Between each panel is a piece from the “From Myth to

Miracle” collection, displaying Roman Sarcophagi and engraved artifacts that were meant to

give positive portrayals of the afterlife. It is safe to say that the resurrection theme on this floor

speaks to both the art and the old plant.

On the second floor are two diesel engines that were installed under Mussolini. Today, these

machines create a wide aisle for displaying replica sculptures of original Greek works next to

copies that were slightly altered to please traditional Roman style. While it may seem unlikely

for such a museum to obtain a minimalist style, Centrale Montemartini puts effort into leaving

the walls empty and the rooms open, allowing two worlds to flatter one another. While the

large engines give the space its grandeur, the art adds warmth and color to the cold tones, so

that with each turn you can appreciate both elements of the museum.

Aside from the fixed art, the museum also hosts a number of different exhibitions throughout

the year. Until March 2023, the exhibition “The Colors of the Romans. Romani. Mosaics From

The Capitoline Collections” will be presenting a wide selection of mosaics, masterpieces of the

Capitoline collections which are not well known by the general public.

At Centrale Montemartini,

town of Ariccia (famous for the porchetta!),

and after travelling across Europe and the

USA, he returned to his homeland with the

idea of bringing people together through

food. Here he met

Karla, a young American

girl, who got to Italy at

18 on a study-abroad

program and never left.

This happened 15 years

ago and the couple is

still going strong today,

building a family – with

a 2-year-old boy, many

cats and many dogs –

and a family business:

spoiling foodies and

wine-lovers from all over with a marvellous

land and experience.

Their retreats consist of taking relatively

small groups of people, (approximately 10)

to maintain intimacy and facilitate sociality,

to different food and wine locations around

the Castelli for a week. These locations

include restaurants, agriturismi, vineyards

where visitors get to enjoy multi-sensory

experiences, through gorgeous views, the

peace and quiet of the countryside, and

some of the best flavours in Italy. The Eat

food market visits, meetings

with local producers and

artisans and more. In short,

Karla and Luca offer an

Karla and Luca organise four week long

Very few of the billions of tourists who visit Rome every year are told that the beauty of this

place expands beyond the city limits. Only true Romans are aware of the treasures and secrets

of their Lazio, a land rich in ancient traditions and cultures, culinary delicacies and breathtaking

landscapes. Eat at Castelli Romani is a new tour experience that opens a window onto

this uncharted world through food and wine retreats.

Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: the elegance of

a French bar with salon accents and intricate chandeliers

within the coziness of a Roman trattoria. Dine directly at

the kitchen counter or in one of the wooden tables while

enjoying Chef’s Roman dishes and homemade pasta.

What to order? With Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure

to have a fantastic dining experience. Authentic cuisine

that has never heard of a ‘half-portion’, delicious meat

and seafood specialities, and main courses marinated in

distilled and bitter bases is what awaits you.

As a starter we suggest the fried green tomato with

buffalo mozzarella and basil mayonnaise. So yummy!

For mains you can try the Linguine con ricciola, pesto

di rucola e limone candito or always stick with the well

loved classic, the iconic La carbonara del Marchese. The

guanciale is crispy, the pasta is homemade and al dente,

and the sauce perfectly creamy. Then try the galletto alla diavola or the Roman-style veal fillet

topped with prosciutto and sage. If you fancy fish, the Tonno rosso alla cacciatora or the sweet

and sour cod fish served with raspberries and vegetables in season.

Il Marchese is a delightful place that is not only culinary heaven but quenches your thirst. It

doubles as a lovely cocktail bar, and the first Amaro Bar of Europe - its menu has more than

six hundred kinds of bitters. Either post dinner, or as an aperitivo, enjoy one of their signature

drinks, all a blend of carefully selected fine ingredients with various textures and extraordinary

compositions of aromas and tastes - each of them unique, each worth every sip.

Raw food, explains Katia, founder, chef and director of

Écru, is energising and rich in protein, environmentally

friendly and suitable for coeliacs, vegans and lactose

intolerant people, as well as creative, full of intense

flavours and colourful dishes that everyone can enjoy.

Raw cooking leaves the nutritional qualities of food

unaltered; its techniques do not involve the use of

fires and cookers, but alternatives methods, such as

fermenting, marinating, a process called ‘massaging the

vegetables’, which serves to soften the fibres, giving a

cooked feel to the product without it actually being cooked (!), and dehydration.

With these techniques, Katia and her staff prepare both savoury and sweet dishes: breads,

crepes, salads, sandwiches, tartare, sushi, vegetable purées, fermented cheeses made from

dried fruit and more.

The restaurant is open from morning till evening, the menu is a la carte and offers the

possibility to eat anything at any time, thanks to a kind of eternal brunch; you can have

breakfast at dinner time, with a bowl of fruit and muesli, have lunch for breakfast with one of

their salads or sushi, and enjoy a sweet snack at lunch time.

Écru is a place we recommend to Romans, vegans and all passers-by who want to taste the

products of the Italian land, in their full potential. In addition to their dishes, you can taste

some of their delicious natural wines, buy some of their products or participate in their raw

food cooking classes.

ARTE LIBERATA 1937-1947:

MASTERPIECES SAVED FROM WAR

Until 10 April 2023, the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome presents the exhibition ARTE LIBERATA

1937-1947 Masterpieces saved from war.

The collection, distributed in ten exposition halls, is made of more than one hundred

masterpieces saved in the period between the two World Wars and, through a collaborative

effort of more than forty museums and institutes, it brings together an extensive documentary,

photographic and audio panorama.

At the centre of the project is the idea of paying a tribute to all those men and women who,

despite all the logistic challenges, in the dramatic contingency of war, interpreted their

profession in the name of a common interest, aware of the universality of our heritage to be

saved.

Starting from the first floor of the museum,

the narrative is articulated into three strands,

displaying statues, oil paintings, period

photographic images and recordings. Right

from the beginning, visitors are invited to take

a step into the past to understand the historic

work of saving Italian works of art from the

dangers of the second World War.

The first thread– Forced exports and the art

market – refers to the alteration suffered by

the art market in the aftermath of the signing

of the Rome-Berlin axis (1936).

The second core – Movements and recoveries

– refers to 1939, when, with Hitler’s invasion

of Poland, Minister of Education Giuseppe

Bottai set in motion the operations to secure

the cultural heritage, with the consequent

elaboration of the plan to move works of art.

The third and final strand – the end of the

conflict and the restitutions – considers the

missions for the recovery and preservation of

stolen works at the end of the war.

ART & CULT

While walking through the gallery space, don’t miss out on some works of the highest artistic

value that have fortunately survived:

• Titian Vecellio’s Danae, from the National Museum of Capodimonte (Naples). Visitors can

find the famous painting in the last hall;

• Santa Palazia by Giovan Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino;

• The Madonna of Senigallia’s oil painting by Piero della Francesca;

• The famous portraits of the literate Alessandro Manzoni by Francesco Hayez, one of the

leading artists of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan;

• Henry VIII by Hans Holbein the Younger, German-Swiss painter and printmaker,

considered one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century;

• The magnificent wooden globe by the cartographer Vincenzo Maria Coronelli from

Montecassino’s National Museum Public Library.

March 26, 2023

Viper Theatre

------------------------

Coma Cose is a unique

duo in Italian music

composed of Fausto

Lama and California.

It was born in 2016

thanks to a disarming

sincerity and irony,

conveyed by California’s

subtle voice and

Fausto’s wordplay.

Pleasant, light and

yet profound songs

with indie pop-hip hop

sounds.
