2 KNIGHT ERRANT | THE DELTA CHI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
62 nd International Convention
July 26 th -31 st brought the Delta Chi Fraternity and its members to
St. Louis, Missouri for our 62nd International Convention. This was
our first convention since 2018!
The brotherhood and camaraderie that convention brings was felt immediately and the Delta Chi
Educational Foundation was grateful to spend time with our donors and friends in person! The DCEF
was proud to support Delta Chi, thank and honor our donors, grant the cost to bring in several fantastic
speakers, and hold our board meeting, annual membership meeting and even a joint board meeting
with the fraternity Board of Regents. Check out some of the great things that happened at convention.
Annual Membership Meeting
Every voting member of the DCEF (check www.dcef.com for details) is afforded a vote at the annual membership meeting in-person
or via proxy if they cannot attend. The Board of Directors was proud to welcome voting members and Brothers Patrick Alderdice
“AA” Elect, Greg Caufman - Regent-IV, Jerod Breit - Executive Director, Peter Chandler, Tom Horowitz, Brian Martin,Gregory Houser,
Trenten Behr, Rich Kruger, Trent Unterbrink, Justin Donnelly, Jon Ginsberg, Ronald Surmacz, Daniel McTague, Larry Stevens,
Mike Gnagi, Sean Conrad, Karl Grindel, John Adamec, Jason Michael Walker, Keith Shriver, Robert Hamlin, Brian Godsy, Bradley
Saribekian, Brendan Shields-Shimizu, William C. Strohm, Lyle Sprinkle, Craig Carp, Ed Fusco, Robert Hubbard, John Kattenberg,
Matthew Rolland, David Weber, Edwin Vandenburg, Shannon Johnson, Mark Sluss, George Preussell, Dick McKaig,Charles
Cheatham, Jon Sattler, Dave Jenks, and William Kennedy to join us for this membership meeting. These voting members along
with proxies received from voting members unable to attend in person gave the DCEF a quorum to vote on all business at this
annual membership meeting.
The primary business at this meeting was to elect new and renewing members to the DCEF Board of Directors. This year saw the
re-election of Brothers Jason Butler, Central Missouri ‘99, Michael Carroll, Auburn ‘71, David Edwards, Georgia Southern ‘86 and
Robert Hendershot, Purdue ‘72. The new members added this year were Brothers Miles Washburn, Massachusetts ‘87 and Peter Chandler,
Maryland ‘69.
Board Meeting
Board Meetings are held in person twice per year in the Winter and Summer. Board meetings are held every other month via
phone or video conference. St Louis Convention brought board members together for another such meeting.
During the Board meeting, which is open to the public (unless closed for specific topics such as HR discussions or proprietary
information), many topics were discussed and voted upon. These included potential changes to account fee structures in the future,
expectations for board members, review of the current financial health of the DCEF, investment strategy, recognition of donors
including New Founders, elections of officers to the DCEF Executive Committee and answering questions to donors and other
interested parties. We thank Brothers Mike Gnagi, Paul Bohlman, John Adamec, Jason Michael Walker, Mark Sluss, George Preussel,
Sean Conrad, Dick McKaig, John Farris, Brian Godsey, Steve Bossart, Patrick Alderdice, Bradley Saribekian, William Kennedy,
Mitchell Licht and Phil Yang for attending the DCEF Board Meeting.
The DCEF was also proud to host the annual Trustee Society Experience, multiple speakers and our convention table where we
helped you “Stick it to Hauser”, honored Brother Ken Shepard and helped donors find out more about their giving and the impact
they have on Delta Chi through the DCEF. Read on for more information!

Chairman’s
Welcome
Rod Arnold,
Texas A&M ‘88
Listening to
our Prospects
T
This issue finds me in the midst of road trips with my
high school senior for onsite college tours. As we step
across many fine campuses, memories from long ago
flood my mind. I’m struck by the factors affecting his
own decision-making process as he works to narrow
his choices. Academic rigor, future career prospects,
campus aesthetics, housing, social engagement,
entertainment options; it all counts.
If you want to know the status of the modern-day
Greek system, look at it through the eyes of a prime
prospect. They haven’t yet memorized all of the Greek
letter symbols on the houses; but what they do know
is how to gauge a winning franchise by the important
measurables. Sincere greetings, handshakes and
friendly conversation all count. Greek housing, if an
option, weighs heavily in the mix. Campus involvement
and a group’s reputation with the student body
at large is important, too. Word gets around, and the
prospects hear it.
Where does Delta Chi fit into the mix? I can report
that we have a presence on many campuses, are currently
absent on other notable ones, and overall have
a favorable reputation. What I can also report is that,
on many campuses, Greek life is exploding. A pent-up
desire for social engagement has led to record numbers
this Fall Rush on many of the campuses with a heavy
Greek tradition. Tour representatives and administrative
officials on those campuses readily admit the
important role members of the Greek community play
during both their undergraduate years, and postgraduation
once they join the university’s alumni
ranks. While some college administrations appear
slightly adversarial to Greek houses, traditionally
Greek campuses fully embrace us as an integral part
of campus leadership and social life.
Which brings me to you, the alumni of our fraternity.
What you are supporting via the Delta Chi Educational
Foundation is important. Your support helps us grow
at a time when growth is extremely important in the
Greek world. We need to fortify our franchises, and
fast. Other peer organizations are doubling down on
undergraduate support, setting themselves up to have
stronger chapters and an even larger alumni base in the
near future. Our growth and the ability to increase our
competitiveness, as it were, will depend on investments
made in our own house.
It matters. Leadership training matters. Merit-based
scholarships to assist our brothers with expenses
matter. And supporting your local chapters with your
guidance matters, too. They are working hard to do
the right things, and to make us proud. The paths
to support are many, and they are completely your
choice. We are entering a fantastic, positive mode of
both addressing and permanently solving challenges
facing our organization. We will be stronger for it.
For all of your support, I thank you.
Engaging Donors
on a Riverboat Cruise
53
Ahead of the 62nd International Convention the Officers of the Delta Chi Atlanta Area
Alumni Chapter (DXAAAC), spearheaded by “B” Sean Conrad, reached out to collaborate
with the DCEF to host a Riverboat Dinner Cruise on the Mississippi River. It turned out
to be one of the highlights of the whole Convention, with nearly 90 in attendance.
The leadership of the DXAAAC recognized the opportunity to gather together in a
unique environment to break bread together. The event was entirely sponsored by the
DXAAAC and several chapter members, offering a complimentary dinner boat cruise
on the Mississippi River. Though primarily for the members of the DXAAAC, they
worked with the DCEF to identify prominent donors who should be included outside
of their local alumni chapter, as well as the newly elected “AA”, “CC”, and “DD”. In all,
88 attendees, including 20 spouses, attended.
This was a great example of a local alumni chapter working together with the International
organization to create opportunities for donor engagement. The DCEF was given
the opportunity to share a few remarks and cultivate stronger relationships.
Special thanks to the DXAAAC, Jon Sattler, Sean Conrad, Dave Cloutier, David Edwards,
Mike Carroll, Bill Thomas, and Larry Stevens for your generosity in making this happen.
The Delta Chi Educational
Foundation is thrilled to
welcome Delta Chi’s newly
elected Executive Committee:
“AA” Patrick Alderdice, Ball State ‘92 is a New
Founder and long time Trustee Society donor for
the Foundation. Patrick has served on the DCEF
Fundraising committee for many years as well as
a past ABT member and past “BB” of the Kansas
Chapter.
“CC” Matt Gorney, Kansas State ‘06 is Tie of Brotherhood
level donor and long time Trustee Society donor.
Matt has also served as a past Regent for Region IV,
past Abt member for Kansas State Chapter and past
DCEF board member
“DD” Mark Sexton, Missouri ‘92 is a LEGES level
donor and long time Trustee Society donor. Mark is
also a past Regent for Region IV and past “BB” of the
Missouri Chapter.
We look forward to working with the new Executive
Committee to lead our beloved Fraternity for the next
two years! Congratulations, Brothers!

2022 Trustee Society Experience
The 2022 Trustee Society Experience took place during the week of Delta Chi’s 62nd
International Convention in St. Louis, MO at Strathalbyn Farms Club. Over 80 donors
and their guests enjoyed the Sporting Clays course at one of the Midwest’s most
exclusive clubs, with instruction and a VIP shooting experience with the U.S. National
Champion Trap Shooter, Zach Nannini.
Each year the TS Experience has been growing in popularity, as the primary donor
appreciation event for the DCEF’s premiere giving society. Designed not only as a
donor appreciation event, but also to build brand ambassadors, this unique experience
took the place of a stale pre-banquet reception for about the same amount of money,
due to overly priced hors d’ oeuvres and adult beverages.
The Trustee Society recognizes donors who give at least $1,000 unrestricted to the
General Fund, to serve the areas of greatest need. Since 2018, each summer the DCEF
has hosted donors at this one-of-a-kind experience leveraging the network of our
Brotherhood. Taking on a life of its own, the TS Experience has become a pseudo
Who’s Who of Delta Chi’s most successful and generous alumni. Friendships and
business partnerships have been formed and strengthened through a common interest
in giving back to advance Delta Chi.
· 2018: Estes Park, CO: The Stanley Hotel tour – site of 1929 Delta Chi Convention,
where Delta Chi became the first fraternity to abolish “Hell Week”
· 2019: Iowa City, IA: Field of Dreams and Farewell to Iowa City – as IHQ was
relocated to Indianapolis
· 2021: Lexington, KY: A Taste of Kentucky @ Keeneland Raceway – held in
conjunction with the DCEF’s Annual Membership Meeting – Big Hats & Bowties
simulated horse racing and tour at Keeneland
· 2022: St Louis, MO: Gateway to the West Sporting Clays @ Strathalbyn Farms Club
Nearly 90% of annual giving for the General Fund comes from donors in the Trustee
Society. Since 2017 the number of Trustee Society donors has doubled, growing from
58 to 120 in 2021 representing 71 chapters. In 2022 the DCEF is targeting 25% growth
in this category of donors. Gifts can be made monthly, quarterly, or annually and in
the form of cash or securities.
The Delta Chi Educational Foundation extends our sincerest thanks and appreciation
to all the Trustee Society donors.
Executive Director’s Message
Delta Chi is more than an organization; it’s an experience that never stops providing. Much
of a member’s time in Delta Chi is spent as an alumnus, and what a rewarding experience
this can be! As alumni, we can advance Delta Chi through our leadership, involvement, and
support. Your actions help provide our undergraduate brothers with a meaningful Delta
Chi experience, laying the foundation for their future years as alumni. We are grateful for
all that you do for the Fraternity, and we hope you will join us this summer for what will
be a memorable experience in St. Louis!

Living a life focused on volunteering to help others
Focus on
Volunteering
John Tunila, OWC, Connecticut ’81 served the Delta Chi Educational Foundation for
more than 25 years from 1995 – 2022. At the St. Louis Convention he stepped down
from service to the Board of Directors. Affectionately known as “Tunes” by his chapter
brothers at UCONN he also served the Connecticut Area Delta Chi Alumni Chapter
as the “E”, “F”, and Alumni Tailgate Co-Chair respectively, in addition to serving the
UCONN House Corporation as President.
First serving as the DCEF Legal Advisor for a decade, then elected to the Board of
Directors. While on the Board he served the Executive Committee as the Secretary
from 2011 – 2013, and took on leadership roles as Fundraising Advisor, and Chairman
of the Strategic Initiatives Committee.
During his long tenure of volunteerism, he led a successful career as an Attorney and
Partner at Diana, Conti & Tunila, LLP located in Manchester, CT. In addition to his law
career, he’s been a full-time family man, raising two-daughters, Emily and Megan,
with his wife, Susan. Susan has been a major supporter of his efforts to advance Delta
Chi at the local, regional, and international level, attending many Conventions with him.
In his free time, John enjoys sailing, which is where he can be found most weekends in
the summer aboard his 36’ Islander, Vittoria. He is a long-time member of the Westerly
Yacht Club in Westerly, R.I. One of his proudest accomplishments was as a member of
the By-Laws committee at Westerly YC, championing his daughters to become the first
female members at the last male-only club on the east coast; now gender neutral.
John could always be counted upon to extend sincerity and hospitality, along with
a thoughtful response in any relationship. Many times, he and Susan provided meals
and lodging to DCEF Staff during their travels to save the organization money. He
always led by example, especially in his giving, having reached the Martlet Club
which recognizes donors who’ve given $50,000 - $74,999.
Reflecting on his experience: “The heroes in Delta Chi that I look up to are Ray Galbreth,
Missouri ‘69 and Mike Carroll, Auburn ‘71. I met Ray [Executive Director Emeritus]
when I was a sophomore at a Regional Leadership Conference; he’s such a folksy and
enjoyable guy. There is no finer Delta Chi out there than Mike Carroll [“AA” Emeritus,
OWC]. I’ve never heard Mike say a negative word about anyone. His positiveness and
ability to see the good side of everybody transcends, and it is really powerful.
I feel Delta Chi is more relevant than ever in today’s college experience. We live in a
very polarizing society; a society that doesn’t seem to know how to come together,
how to work together for the greater good. We didn’t always see eye-to-eye [in
college] but that didn’t interfere with our friendship, and it didn’t interfere with our
common purpose. I think that’s what’s missing today in society - the ability to work
together, and that’s a skill you learn through the fraternity experience. You’re gonna
have to reach a resolution with your brothers... otherwise the social event doesn’t
occur, or the fundraiser doesn’t happen. College is a difficult and oftentimes isolating
environment. Having a strong support environment and a brotherhood really can
make a huge difference between success and failure.”
Thank you, John, for your years of service towards advancing Delta Chi.

in his honor and bought him a “martlet”! Over $15,000 was raised in honor of Greg!
From Greg Hauser “Thank you to all the donors who “stuck it to me” at convention
this year and supported the Delta Chi Educational Foundation!”
Thanks to those who bought Martlets for Greg Hauser as well as all those who made a
The Delta Chi Educational Foundation recognizes donors
with varying degrees of Lifetime Giving Status and
annual giving societies, such as the 1890 Society and
Trustee Society. These giving levels include all giving
through the Educational Foundation and range from
$500 - $1 million.
The DCEF created the recognition of New Founder in
1997 for lifetime contributions totaling $100,000 and
more. In addition to contemporary donors, the recognition
was bestowed posthumously as well. It marks a
significant achievement in our lifelong endeavor when
a Brother or Friend of the Fraternity makes a lifelong
commitment to supporting the leaders of tomorrow
through the Fraternity and Educational Foundation.
Since our last Convention in 2018, we have the honor
of recognizing five men who’ve achieved New Founder
and Second Degree New Founder. Two posthumously,
and two others who have graciously declined to speak;
their impact is noble and noteworthy. Please join me in
thanking and recognizing the following:
• Second Degree, Brother Thomas Maroldy, Florida ‘58
• Second Degree, Brother John Ziegler, Louisiana Tech ’01
• Second Degree, Brother Ed Fusco, Embry Riddle ’73, OWC
• New Founder, Brother Ralph Fabozzi, Embry Riddle ‘73
In all, 28 men have been recognized as a New Founder
for their generosity, out of more than 126,000 initiates
since 1890. Less than a quarter of one percent of the
members who enter Delta Chi achieve what you have
been recognized for tonight. The requirements are
demanding, but fair, requiring perseverance and ability.
Tonight, we have the opportunity to recognize the 29th:
Brother Chad M. Wolett, Arizona State ’94.
“If I can leave you with one message it would be, give
what you can, as often as you can.
Many of you may have heard the parable: How do you
eat an elephant sandwich? One bite at a time. Standing
before you tonight I’ve made more than 300 individual
gifts in the 36 years I’ve been a member of Delta Chi.
The big gifts did come, but I started with small gifts;
small gifts add up to a big impact over time. For me
and our family, small monthly gifts were easier to digest,
and I just stepped those up over time, little by little.
Making gifts to Delta Chi made me feel good. I felt I
was giving back to the organization and paying it forward
to the next generation of leaders in my Fraternity.
I experienced the great advantages of brotherhood
during my time in college, and even more-so in my time
as an alumnus. Investing in the growth and development
of my Fraternity brought me into circles of other men
who shared my values of giving back; those men
became mentors, friends, and business partners.
A number of years ago I was told a story. A son and his
father were walking down the street when they came
across a scraggly man holding up a sign that said
“Anything Helps.” The father reaches into his pocket,
pulls out $20 and gives it to the man with the sign. As
they were walking away the son says to the father, “Dad,
that man will probably just waste that money on beer
and drugs.” The father stops and turns to the son and
says, “Son, if he does use that money that way it says a
lot about his character. Here’s the problem, when someone
asks for our help and we have the means and ability
to help but we choose not to… well son, that says a lot
about our character.”
Let me repeat that; If we have the means and ability to
help but we choose not to, it says something about our
character.
If the Delta Chi Educational Foundation isn’t currently
in your regular giving, I’m asking you now; Join me
[tonight] by making a gift, give what you can, and
invest in our brotherhood.
This recognition of my $100,000th dollar given is just a
number… it’s what the number represents, the number
of lives touched via scholarships and the men developed
via leadership programs that gets me excited. As I stand
here before you, it’s the men in this room that inspire me
to keep giving. I can’t wait to see the impact each of you
make in our society. It’s your education and character
development that I’m investing in with my money.”

The Delta Chi Educational Foundation is excited
to announce that the 2023 Winter Board Meeting
will be held at the InterContinental San Francisco,
January 26-30. Room rates are available for $209/
night++.
These are open meetings, and all donors are invited
to attend. Business meetings will be held on Friday,
January 27 and tourist experiences will be organized
for guests around the city. On Saturday,
January 28 join in the fun on the Dave Cloutier
curated wine trail
through Napa
Valley! Transportation
will be
provided; wine
tasting admission
will be organized
and collected (not
tax deductible).
In between enjoy a meal at Union Square a short
walk from the hotel, or don your bib for fresh
Dungeness crab at Fisherman’s Wharf, zig-zag your
way down Lombard Street, hop on a cable-car on
your way to ChinaTown, gaze at the Golden Gate
Bridge, or plan your escape from Alcatraz!
These Foundation meetings are building a reputation
for alumni engagement, and we look forward
to welcoming more newcomers who are looking
for meaningful and fun ways to connect with other
alumni, all while making a positive difference for a
good cause.
