From a 2021 team that ranksamong the Bulldogs’ all-time greatest, onethat captured the school’s first nationalchampionship in four decades while going14-1 … the only setback coming to Alabamain the SEC Championship Game, a lossthat Georgia would avenge with the 33-18pasting of the Tide in the national title gameon January 10 in Indianapolis.A glance at four games in the 2022campaign gives us great clarity as to thisteam’s toughness.The first is the September 3 season openerwith a pre-season 11th-ranked Oregon teamin Mercedes-Benz Stadium. What manythought would be a down-to-the-wire battlebetween two highly-ranked opponentsdidn’t exactly turn out that way. Long-timeGeorgia observers commented after the3rd-ranked Bulldogs’ 49-3 shellacking of theDucks, playing their first game under headcoach Dan Lanning who only the year beforeserved as Georgia’s defensive coordinator,that this may have indeed been the mostimpressive performance a Bulldog team hadever posted. One game in and already, thetalk of a second straight natty had begunheating up.After soundly dispatching Samford, SouthCarolina and Kent State, the unbeatenBulldogs then traveled to Columbia, Missourion October 1 – and ran into a buzzsaw!Georgia was heavily favored to topple aMissouri Tiger team that stood just 2-3 onthe season and 0-2 in the SEC. But someoneapparently failed to get that message tothe Tigers as they repeatedly frustrated theGeorgia offense with a fierce pass rush onStetson Bennett and surged to a 13-0 leadon the Bulldogs early in the second quarter.Then the Mizzou lead blinked to 16-3 beforeJack Podlesny’s field goal trimmed the Tigers’lead to 16-6 at the halftime break.But, backs to the wall and staring their firstdefeat squarely in the face, the Bulldogspulled within 19-12 at the start of the finalquarter. Then, with Bennett nailing somekey completions and the Dawgs’ KennyMcIntosh and Daijun Edwards-led runninggame taking over (107 yards rushing inthe fourth quarter), Georgia outscored thehome team by 14-3 in that period to leavethe Show-Me state with a grueling 26-22win. Difficult as it was, this game not onlydemonstrated the team’s toughness but agreat resiliency also.A third illustration of both the Bulldogs’mental and physical toughness came on theafternoon of November 5.
