Even thought it’s early in the year, there seems to be an interesting
mix of people with slight trepidation regarding what’s to come in
2023. Rightly so, perhaps, but there are still many businesses and
individuals who are embracing the challenges, facing them head-on, and
recognising that there are still opportunities out there...
The Business Pilot Barometer on page 10 reflect this; it shows that whilst the
market is slowly recovering and is being heavily impacted by external pressures,
those that forward planned and made the right investments last year will be
better placed to capitalise on the opportunities that exist this year.
This is echoed by Selecta Systems’ Andy Green on page 22, who says that whilst
there will be challenges in not just our sector but the wider economy, this can
create potential openings for fabricators if you choose the right partnerships in
terms of support, marketing and product offering.
Elsewhere in this issue, I had a busy end to 2022 with some great press
trips. You can read more about my trip to REHAU’s Blaenau production plant,
national distribution centre and PVCR profile recycling facility on page 18,
whilst I also got to see ERA’s new smart door handle, TouchKey, which looks
to be an impressive addition to the company’s offering that will meet modernday
demands and expectations (page 50).
We also talk colour trends with Residence Collection (page 26), door trends with
Doorco (page 30), and the hardware trends to look out for this year with UAP
(page 48). Plus, we talk machinery with Danny Jones of Kall Kwik (page 40) and
Neil Parton of elumatec (page 42); whilst Ian Short explains how Morley Glass
can help companies make big savings on waste disposal costs (page 54).
Read on for all this plus lots more. Enjoy the issue!
THERMAL THINKING
FROM SHEERLINE
FIT SHOW 2023 REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!
Registration for the FIT Show’s 10th anniversary
edition is now live on the show’s website.
Sheerline has launched a new Thermal
Calculator exclusively for its customers
so they can calculate Energy Ratings and
U-values quickly and efficiently.
It has been developed by the in-house
R&D team to help customers meet Part-L
regulations in line with the government’s
2025 Future Homes and Buildings Standard.
The proprietary software behind the
solution produces Certass endorsed results
for U-values and Energy Ratings aligned to
the Certass Thermal Rating Register.
The exhibition takes place from 23 to 25 May
2023, and organisers say the show is the UK’s
number one event for the windows, doors, glass,
hardware and components industry.
The exhibition has grown from its roots as a
predominantly PVC-U windows and doors show,
to now incorporating the full spectrum of home
improvement products in materials ranging from
aluminium through to timber and the latest glass
technology.
Organisers say that more than 85% of the
space at the show has been allocated, with 20%
of that proportion being brands that have never
exhibited at Fit Show before.
Nickie West, FIT Show Event Director, said:
“It’s always exciting when we open registration
for FIT Show. It’s been a quick turnaround since
our delayed 2021 event in May 2022 but we’ve
managed to make some exciting changes and
develop new features to broaden our appeal in
this time. This, coupled with the fact that there
are so many new brands to see for the first time,
make Fit Show an essential fixture in the 2023
calendar.
“The fact that it’s our 10-year anniversary event
means there’s even more reasons to attend and
help us celebrate than ever before!”
You can read more about the 2023 show on
page 12.
The software enables fabricators to
self-generate specific thermal ratings for
all windows and doors within Sheerline’s
Classic and Prestige ranges in as little as
30 seconds. Sheerline says it is easy-touse,
guiding users through the specific
information that is required.
This includes the product range, sash
feature, whether the product is a window,
door or bi-fold along with the frame type.
Once fabricators have input these details,
they can check their Part-L compliance
within seconds while creating labels for the
products they are fabricating.
Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO said: “It’s
an invaluable tool for our customers, not
only to help the country reduce its carbon
footprint, but to help homeowners enjoy
thermally efficient, warm homes.
“When customers choose Sheerline,
they’re choosing compliance and all the
benefits associated with it.”
APPLICATOR
SUCCESS
MORE VIRGIN MATERIALS CONSUMED IN SIX
YEARS THAN IN WHOLE OF 20TH CENTURY
Environmental compliance data specialist
Ecoveritas has issued an urgent call to action
as research has shown more virgin materials
have been consumed in six years than the
entire 20th century.
Garnalex has announced it has achieved
full approved applicator status after going
through Syntha Pulvin’s testing process.
Garnalex says achieving this status helps
underline its commitment to excellence as
Syntha Pulvin is one of the leading architectural
powder coatings brands in Europe.
The Circularity Gap Report 2023 has found that
we live in the ‘overshoot era’ where the rising
material extraction of over 100 billion tons/year
has shrunk global circularity from 9.1% in 2018
to 7.2% in 2023.
And rising material extraction and use means
the situation is getting worse each year –
around the world, nearly every country has an
unsustainable approach to virgin material.
“Currently, more than 90% of materials are
either wasted, lost or remain unavailable for reuse
for years as they are locked into long-lasting
buildings and machinery.
Syntha Pulvin only works with approved
applicators that hold ISO9001 accreditation and
they must complete a comprehensive testing
process. This includes a 12-week programme
that ensures the organisation meets both the
BS6496 standard and Syntha Pulvin’s stringent
quality requirements.
Each approved applicator must also provide
examples of previous work that can be tested
for quality and durability. This protects the
Syntha Pulvin brand and ensures the company
only works with trusted suppliers. To maintain
this full applicator status, Garnalex will also
undergo audits at regular intervals.
Greg Grabski, Garnalex’s Powder Coating
Plant Manager, said: “Gaining full Syntha
Pulvin accreditation is a huge accolade for
everyone at Garnalex. Our in-house powder
coating plant has been operational for less
than six months and it is already recognised
for its quality and consistency.”
Garnalex CEO, Roger Hartshorn added:
“Bringing our powder coating in-house has
been a game-changer for us. It has enabled us
to focus on quality in a way we simply couldn’t
when we were outsourcing.”
www.sheerline.com/colour
“We are becoming less circular at a time when
we need to accelerate circularity to support climate
biodiversity and pollution action,” said Global
EPR Director Andrew McCaffery. “For something
that is a sphere, our planet is becoming less and
less circular each year. We are a long way from
decoupling growth from consumption.
“We are at a critical inflection point to halt
global warming. Having been held back by shorttermism
and poor policy making, we are now
finally evolving to meet the moment.
Natalie Little has been appointed as the
President of the Glass & Glazing Federation
(GGF) for a two-year term, becoming the first
woman to hold the position.
Natalie will lead the GGF and its subsidiaries
in what the association says will be a seminal
period in its development and progression. She
takes up her presidency whilst continuing her role
as Commercial Director of Truhouse, her family’s
home improvement company based in Stroud,
Gloucestershire.
Anda Gregory, Group Chief Development Officer
for the GGF, has worked closely with Natalie
during her period as Vice President. She said:
“Natalie has been involved with the GGF for some
“We must reuse, educate ourselves on
recycling, and reduce food waste, which can be
stopped if we control our collective greed. We are
surrounded by circular start-ups, professionals,
and consultants.
“We read new reports, play books, and
roadmaps every day, but we are not changing the
reality, the system. We must use this big jump in
the wrong direction as an unequivocal catalyst for
change.”
www.ecoveritas.com
FIRST FEMALE GGF PRESIDENT APPOINTED
time now and we have worked closely together
during the past year. She brings extraordinary
insight with her and her direct and pragmatic
approach to everything is refreshing.
“I know that she will be a huge asset towards the
team achieving some exciting projects that we are
set to deliver during the next two years.”
ANOTHER AWARD
WIN FOR MFT
STRONG START TO YEAR FOR
CARL F GROUPCO
Independent hardware distributor Carl F
Groupco is reporting a strong start to 2023.
Made for Trade (MFT) ended last year
by winning the ‘Best Roofing System or
Product’ for the Korniche Lantern Roof, at
the 2022 Built It Awards.
MFT says the Build It Awards have
always been regarded as the most coveted
recognition in the self-build industry, mainly
as a result of the rigorous, impartial judging
panel of specialists, which affords real
credibility for all winners.
As the last of the main industry awards
attended by the MFT team during 2022, this
year’s event took place with a Gala Dinner in
the heart of London.
John Crittenden, Managing Director at Carl F
Groupco, said: “We’re starting 2023 the same
way as we ended 2022 – strongly. Hardware is
always a bellwether for the wider industry, so it’s
heartening to see such strong sales.”
John says the strongest sales are coming from
the aluminium door sector.
He explained: “At the premium end of the
market, aluminium continues its resurgence, as
do large glazed doors. These are product trends
that show no signs of slowing down, and we
expect them to continue well into 2023.
The company says one range showing
particularly buoyant sales is Roto hardware, for
which Carl F Groupco is one of the UK’s major
stockists. This includes the PAS 24-compliant
Inowa sliding door hardware, designed for both
aluminium and PVC-U sliding doors, including the
popular Aluplast Smart-Slide door system.
For tilt and slide doors, the Alversa range is
said to remain popular. It has a handle-operated
tilt mode and offers secure tilt ventilation to
improve air circulation without compromising
security. The system is PAS 24 compliant too,
even with night ventilation.
John added: “Roto hardware gives our
customers the perfect mix of premium quality and
features, simple assembly and installation. It’s
a compelling range. Our strong start to the year,
especially in areas such as aluminium hardware,
is an indicator that there is still plenty of
opportunity in the market. Long may it continue!”
www.carlfgroupco.co.uk
As well as coming away with the top prize
for the ‘Best Roofing System or Product’, a
second recognition was also celebrated, as
the Korniche Bi-Folding Door was shortlisted
for the award of Best Glazed Doors.
Speaking of the double-shortlisting and
the incredible award win, MFT Marketing
Manager Ian Bousfield said: “Recognition
and understanding of the Korniche brand
and products continues to become more and
more established in the fabric of the wider
building industry.
“Made for Trade work hard and continually
invest in product development, marketing,
and brand awareness to ensure that Korniche
offers the very best platform for our partners
and customers, to allow them to sell multi
award-winning products at the best prices.”
The Business Pilot Barometer
SEASON'S GREETINGS?
Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst at Business Pilot, says that the industry saw ‘normal levels
of demand’ return in 2022, but cashflow and bad debt could have an impact in 2023...
December was what December normally is –
a slow month for window and door sales.
Leads were down 40% on November and
sales were down 43%. The flip side of that is that
at £6,142, average order value was up 15%.
And while a month-on-month drop of 40% in
leads and 43% in sales sounds – and is –
significant, the fall is consistent with a ‘normal’
seasonal adjustment.
For example, in December 2021 sales were down
by 40%, going forward to record a 47% bounce in
January 2022.
Tougher times may, however, be ahead.
Leads were down 4% year-on-year, and 29% on
December 2020. Sales last December were down
17% on the same time in 2021 and 32% on
December 2020.
The market has been creeping back towards
‘normal levels of demand’, for the last 12 months
or more.
We should still expect to see figures climb back in
January this year after the Christmas-lull.
The squeeze on household incomes and
inflationary pressure, however, means that it is
likely that this will be at a more modest level than
in either 2021 or 2020.
The forecasts for the housing market and the
wider UK economy are downbeat.
The UK is widely predicted to already be in
recession and the Bank of England is expected
to increase the base rate further this year in the
face of stubbornly high inflation.
Against this backdrop house prices are expected
to suffer their biggest decline since the financial
crisis with a drop of around 4%.
Even the double-digit falls predicted by the most
pessimistic commentators would not wipe out
the pandemic-driven increase of around 20% in
house prices, since 2019.
Homeowners who purchased their properties
before COVID and Stamp Duty holidays will retain
equity so will, in this respect, still have cash to
spend; but higher mortgage interest payments –
predicted to rise on average by £3,000 this year
– will lessen affordability.
Finance boost
Inflation will also continue to limit household
discretionary spend.
If you don’t already, this may make it a prudent
time to add finance to your offer. Homeowners are
facing a squeeze on income but higher average
order values suggest that they recognise the
contribution windows and doors can make in
lowering their heating costs and bills.
The other silver lining in amongst an otherwise
gloomy outlook for the UK economy as a whole
is that unemployment remains at historically low
levels, and while it may rise it is forecast to do so
more modestly than during past downturns.
The knowledge that their income stream is for most,
protected, should give homeowners increased
confidence to borrow to fund investments.
The bigger challenge may be company cash flow
and bad debt.
As always, those fabricators and installers that
have continued to invest – and those who have
close control on cash – will be better placed to
ride out tougher times this year.
The Business Pilot Barometer offers a monthly analysis of the key trends defining window and door
retail, drawing on real industry data collated by the Business Pilot customer relationship management
system (CRM). Business Pilot uses cloud-based technologies to give installers complete visibility of every
element of their operation from leads and conversions to job scheduling, cost of installation, service
calls, and financial reporting.
Advertorial – Metal Technology
SYSTEMS CERTIFIED
SYSTEMS
Total Fabricator hears how Metal Technology’s systems have been certified by the
Passive House Institute and what this means for the supply chain...
Metal Technology’s System 17 Hi+
Curtain Walling and System 5-45
Hi+ Window have been certified
by the Passive House Institute (PHI),
recognising that our products meet the
required energy-efficiency criteria, with
System 17 Hi+ curtain walling awarded the
highest ranking of A+.
PHI is an independent research institute that
has played an especially crucial role in the
development of the Passive House concept – the
only internationally recognised, performance-based
energy standard in construction.
Following an extensive R&D and technical
development process, Metal Technology’s Passive
House certified products can be integrated into
Passive House projects, to assist in providing the
overall requirement of Passive House criteria.
See page 16 for more information on how Metal
Technology is leading the way in Passive House
Education, with our Passive House systems being
specified for new, innovative education buildings
being designed to the Passivhaus standard.
What is Passive House?
Established by the Passivhaus Institute in
Darmstadt, Germany in 1996, Passive House was
one of the pioneering concepts for the construction
of low energy houses and buildings. The design
is focused on making best use of the passive
influences in a building – e.g. sunshine, shading
and ventilation – rather than active heating and
cooling systems, such as air conditioning and
central heating. This, coupled with very high levels
of insulation and airtightness, make it possible for
a passive building to use 90% less energy than
those which are traditionally constructed.
Passive buildings offer superior indoor comfort
due to consistent temperatures and good air
quality. They also have the added benefit of
reducing both external and internal noise due to
the high levels of insulation.
Currently 35% of global energy consumption stems
from the building sector alone and the operational
stage is the largest contributor to carbon emissions
– the majority of which is from heating and cooling
demand. Passive House buildings provide
a transparent quality assured approach to
meeting our climate goals, while also creating a
sustainable built environment.
How does Passive House work?
The standard is built on a set of five principles that
ensure stable temperatures, comfortable indoor air,
reduction of noise and minimal energy use:
1. No thermal bridging – this means making sure
walls, floors and roofs are well insulated with no
gaps. This reduces the need for heating and cooling
to achieve a comfortable temperature
2. High quality insulation – the quality of
insulation is key to the success of the building
design. For most cool temperate climates, this
means a heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of .15
W/(m 2 K). The insulation serves to minimise the
heat exchange with the outside environment
3. Superior high-performance windows – such
as Metal Technology’s 545Hi+ ensure the entire
building envelope is well insulated with exceptional
low thermal conductivity. Frames should be
fitted with low E-glazing units filled with argon or
Krypton to prevent heat transfer. For most cool
temperate climates this means a U-value
of .80W/(m 2 K) with g-values around 50%
(g value= total solar transmittance,
proportion of the solar energy available for
the room)
4. Airtight construction – there should
be no uncontrolled airflow between
internal and external environments
5. Mechanical ventilation and heat
recovery – the measures to insulate the building
are combined with high quality ventilation that
recovers heat (min. 75%) from the used air and
transfers it to the fresh incoming air. This ensures a
minimal loss of energy and good indoor air quality.
For a building to be considered Passive
House, it must meet the following criteria:
Space heating and demand – not to exceed
15kWh or 10W (peak demand) per square metre of
usable living space
Space cooling demand – targets matching the
heat demand with an additional, climate dependant
allowance for dehumidification
Renewable Primary energy demand – not
to exceed 60kWh annually for all domestic
applications (heating, cooling, hot water, and
electricity) per square metre of usable living space
Airtightness – maximum of .6 air changes per
hour at 50 pascals pressure (as verified with onsite
pressure testing both pressurised and
de-pressurised states)
Thermal comfort – thermal comfort must be
met for all living areas year-round with not more
than 10% of the hours in any given year over 25
degrees Celsius.
Leading the way
in Passive House
Education
As the UK works to reduce its carbon emissions, there has been an increased
demand for new education buildings to meet the Passivhaus standard. With vast
experience in supplying its architectural aluminium systems for a wide range
of universities, colleges, schools and student accommodation developments,
Metal Technology’s certified Passive House systems are being specified to
assist in providing the overall requirement of Passive House criteria.
Metal Technology’s System 17 Hi+ Curtain Walling
and System 5-45 Hi+ Window have been certified
by the Passive House Institute (PHI). Further Passive
House products are under development as we
continue our drive to reduce our carbon footprint
on our road to Net Zero.
Currently, 35% of global energy consumption stems
from the building sector alone and the operational
stage is the largest contributor to carbon emissions,
the majority of which is from heating and cooling
demand. Passive House buildings provide a
transparent, quality assured approach to meeting
our climate goals, whilst also creating a sustainable
built environment.
Metal Technology played an intrinsic role in the
design process of the £29m Erne Campus at South
West College in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland which
opened its doors in September 2021. The campus
was the world’s first educational Passivhaus Premium
building and the first non-domestic Passivhaus
Premium in the UK, delivering an average project
façade u-value of 0.8w/m2K.
Designed by Hamilton Architects LLP and delivered
by Tracey Brothers Ltd, the 8,000m 2 education and
community facility is situated on the prime site of
the former Erne Hospital and has achieved BREEAM
outstanding accreditation, generating four times
more energy than it uses.
The construction and passive house design was
managed by Mullarkey Pedersen Architects for
Tracey Brothers’ design and build team. The Erne
Campus won the 2021 BREEAM Official Public
Sector Project – Design Stage Award and was also
named UK Project of the Year 2022 by the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
In 2022, Metal Technology was appointed to
supply its Passive House systems for one of the
world’s largest Passivhaus buildings at 26,666m 2 –
St Columba’s RC High School and Woodmill High
School, part of the Dunfermline Learning Campus,
which is due to open in 2024. Designed by AHR
Architects, the high school development is being
delivered by BAM Construction for Fife Council.

Out & About – REHAU
George Lewis recently visited three major parts of the REHAU network, including its Blaenau
Ffestiniog production plant, its national distribution centre and, lastly, its PVCR recycling
plant, to see how it brings everything together, from raw materials to the finished profile…
With an annual turnover of 88 million
Euros in 2021, and with one in seven
windows in the UK said to have some
sort of REHAU product in it, REHAU has always
been forward-thinking; the systems house says it
understands that if you stand still, you fall behind.
BEFORE, DURING, AFTER
We recently got the chance to see three working
parts of the REHAU ‘machine’, which gave us an
insight into the whole life-cycle of a PVC profile,
from its production at the company’s Blaenau
Ffestiniog plant and travel from its national
distribution centre. This concludes when the PVC
returns to PVCR, REHAU’s recycling plant, an area
that the company hopes to grow through further
collaboration with the supply chain.
The start
Somewhat out-of-sync with the way the profile
would make its journey, our REHAU road trip actually
concluded where the profile starts its life, at the
Blaenau Ffestiniog production plant in North Wales.
The profile then makes its
way to REHAU’s National
Distribution centre in Runcorn
The Blaenau Ffestiniog plant was bought in 1979
and had just 20 employees. It was the second
factory established by the supplier after being
founded in the town of Rehau in Germany in 1948.
Originally the plant was used for the manufacturing
of other products but started window extrusion in
1987. Blaenau-Ffestiniog now has 246 employees.
Due to its rural location near Snowdonia National
Park, and its status as the area’s largest employer,
REHAU has had to work tirelessly throughout the
years to ensure good ties to the local community.
It has eight apprentices working at the production
plant and works with Careers Wales to engage with
schools and colleges in the area to show that a
career in the fenestration industry is a viable option.
Blaenau Ffestiniog has a total of 18 extrusion
lines, which equates to a production of 3,200
tonnes per month. Included in those 18 extrusion
lines is six co-extrusion lines. These lines are
where the recycled PVC pellet, which we hear
about later, are used. REHAU says the quantity
of REHAU window products made of co-extruded
polymer equates to 45% in total.
Profile manufactured
at REHAU’s Blaenau
Ffestiniog plant in Wales
The company says the Blaenau Ffestiniog plant was
one of the first UK plants to change from a solventbased
primer to a water-based one, used during the
lamination process, which is better environmentally.
But the ‘green’ focus doesn’t stop there. REHAU has
the target of achieving zero waste and says that
currently 99% of all plant scrap is recycled.
18 T F JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2023 CONNECTING THE WINDOW, DOOR & ROOF FABRICATION SUPPLY CHAIN

SYSTEMS
The middle
During the trip we also got to see REHAU’s 132,000
sq. ft. national distribution centre, which opened
in 2014. The Runcorn site was strategically placed
to conveniently transport profile from Blaenau
Ffestiniog to the distribution centre, and onto its
network of fabricators nationwide.
PVCR General Manager Ceri
Davies talking us through
the profile recycling process
REHAU says it has spent £10 million on the centre,
including a big recent investment in two new ‘eco
trucks’, which run hydrogenated vegetable oil and
are impressively manufactured with cameras
instead of wing mirrors, which is said to have
improved safety and importantly created a 7-8%
improvement in fuel efficiency.
Whilst walking around the warehouse, it was
incredible to see the sheer number of products
leaving the centre, with some of the more popular
products not even making it into the warehouse
due to customer demand! It is delivered from
Blaenau Ffestiniog and left outside ready to be
placed onto the trucks and onto installers and
fabricators in all parts of the UK. REHAU says there
is approximately £10.5 million worth of stock on
site, sitting in between 5,600-5,800 stillages.
The end (and the beginning)
In what is the final part of the process, but what
we saw first, we visited PVCR. REHAU added PVCR
to its portfolio of businesses in 2014. It is a sister
company that recycles 670 tonnes per month of
PVC-U in the form of post-consumer windows.
The profile goes through a method which turns
used PVC-U into high-quality recycled PVC-U
shards, which is then transported to REHAU’s
Blaenau Ffestiniog plant, turned from a shard
into a pellet, and then introduced into the
manufacturing process for brand new window
and door profiles. REHAU says the newly created
profile doesn’t lose any durability or aesthetic
appeal, and is used on specific REHAU ranges,
including its TOTAL70 system.
REHAU says that 77% of the old windows that
come into PVCR can be turned into recycled
profile, and this method is stopping between
1000/1200 tonnes of windows going into landfill
per month.
The 2.5 acre PVCR site in Runcorn can keep up
to 150 tonnes of frames at any one time. But as
Ceri Davies, General Manager at PVCR explained,
this could be more if required due to the space
available on site, meaning it has the potential to
have 100 tonnes per day brought in.
He said: “The quality of the PVC we have been
able to send to Blaenau is phenomenal.” He also
explained PVCR is working to be more streamlined
in order to produce more recycled content,
including a new pre-shredding machine that has
helped reduce energy consumption by 20%.
REHAU says part of the development of PVCR is
increasing the volume and improving the way the
company receives old windows. The company is
also actively looking to grow its relationship with
fabricators and installers to ensure as many old
windows or profile off cuts are collected and sent to
PVCR, rather than thrown away or taken to landfill.
What next?
Seeing the whole process from start to finish
shows what can happen when a company puts
the correct measures in place and the team is
working in tandem. A profile is made, distributed,
and eventually returns to REHAU to be recycled
and reused. This sounds easy yet is far from
it, but as REHAU has shown, it can be done.
The next step is to work more closely with the
supply chain and increase the volume of recycled
content going back into the supply chain.
As construction of new housing and developments
is at an all-time high and homeowners look to
improve the energy efficiency of their homes with
new window installations, it is about developing
the infrastructure to get those frames recycled
and back into the system.
Could an innovation such as REHAU’s Window.
ID, which shows fabricators, installers and
consumers the material history of their windows,
be the answer? REHAU thinks so. But the key for
now is about educating the supply chain about the
benefits of recycling, utilising recycled profile and
ensuring that when a window has reached the end
of its life, it can be processed and end up installed
on a new project, and not in landfill.
homeowners? Email the editor or contact us
INDUSTRY-LEADING
WARM ROOF FABRICATION
With over 15 years of system development, innovation has been at
the core of our business since we created the first-ever prefabricated
conservatory roof replacement system.
Continuing this legacy, we employ revolutionary technology to continually better the
Guardian Warm Roof system. Investing heavily in software for our fabricators, we have
optimised custom project mapping and made it easier to order the materials through
our online portal. Additionally, this software includes all the details needed for correct
material marking and cutting, eliminating any guesswork.
Setting another industry first, Metrotiles
can be pre-cut and coded to specification
for each Guardian Warm Roof.
This means the tiles can then be packed
down in order and sent to the site for
fast installation.
Distinctive structural composition
Although the “Skin-on-frame” structure
of the Guardian Warm Roof isn’t unique,
it includes a one-of-kind ridge and hip
support composition that caters for more
complex roof shapes. Moreover, we have
further optimised the number of aluminium
rafters needed in the Guardian Warm Roof,
which also requires minimal cleats. All-in-all,
this means operations can run on minimal
machinery and you can reduce stock
holding on the workshop floor.
Enhanced Fabrication Quality
Thanks to an expert team and years of
development we have been able to reduce
the overall fabrication time of the Guardian
Warm Roof for our Certified Fabricators.
Time savings equal faster turnarounds,
however, this isn’t the only benefit. Certified
Guardian Warm Roof Fabricators reduce
their overall material waste and can
economically pack away each roof ready
for dispatch. Again, this frees up space
in the workshop to start on the next roof
and means labour resources can be
better prioritised. Additionally, to beat
supply chain issues, where possible, we
manufacture products for our fabricators
such as the Guardian Slates.
Superior end-to-end experience
Maintaining a focus on system quality
and relationships with our fabricators, we
can cultivate an exceptional end-to-end
experience for our customers and end
users. Through the Guardian Warm Roof
certified fabricator and installer scheme, we
support an enhanced level of service. First,
with incoming leads, we have a dedicated
UK-based customer care team that matches
homeowners to fully vetted Certified
Guardian Warm Roof Installers. Next, all
and enables effective roof fabrication
turnover so installers can receive everything
they need in one drop. On-site, installers
can complete the exterior of a Guardian
time, labour and material waste.
However, if an installer’s training or
insurance is not up to date, they will be
notified, and their verified status removed.
Though severe, this action reinforces the
2023 Outlook
SYSTEMS
ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE
Andy Green, Selecta Systems’ Sales Director, provides some of the potential challenges
ahead and the opportunities they generate for fabricators and installers during 2023.
With the mixture of a global pandemic,
supply chain and resource issues to
tend with over the last couple of years,
our industry fared extremely well, remaining
resilient and buoyant.
As we move through 2023 and beyond, we now
seem to be in what feels like a never-ending news
feed of doom and gloom, but with challenges
comes opportunities.
We are hearing of a global recession brought on
by what the media cite as crises after crises.
Mortgage rates soaring and a possible sharp fall
in housing prices.
High inflation, elevated fuel prices and soaring
energy costs, which all-in-all is having a
detrimental impact on the cost of living for many.
Andy says material costs are just one of a number of potential issues that could affect the sector this year
Soaring energy costs
It appears that 2023 will continue to be fraught by
rising energy costs, even with the government’s
help there are fears that there may be further
increases.
When you compare current energy costs to 2020
and 2021, there has been a substantial increase
in energy bills.
Even if and when they do start to decrease, we
are a long way away from the 2020 and 2021
prices. However, with this comes opportunity for
the fenestration industry.
There are many looking at ways of reducing their
energy consumption and improving their home’s
energy efficiency levels.
As an industry, we have a range of window and
door products that can provide a long-term
solution to the current “crisis” – increasing their
necessity to the consumer.
Andy Green
What this means is that as a window and door
fabricator and/or installer you have the ideal
platform and opportunity to promote the energy
efficiency of your products as one of the main
USP’s.
Replacing ageing and tired windows and doors
with new can be seen as an essential renovation
to improve a home’s thermal efficiency and
reduce energy usage.
There is a need to focus on this positive and
educate, as there are millions of homes that
would benefit from new energy efficient windows
and doors, thus possibly saving hundreds of
pounds per year on their energy bills.
Combining this with the latest and future planned
revisions to Building Regulations Approved
Document Part L, it provides you with a legislative
platform for promoting the thermal performance
of windows and doors within the home.
Housing market
With many homeowners facing a rise in mortgage
repayments over the coming 12 months or so,
on top of the previously mentioned cost of living
increases, it is envisaged that there may be a dip
in house moves.
In-turn this could lead to the possibility of a
sharp decrease in housing prices, as the demand
wanes.
2023 Outlook
SYSTEMS
Continued from page 22
However, falling house prices and rising
mortgages may lead to a rethink from
homeowners.
The “don’t move, but improve” scenario could
possibly pan out, with it deemed cheaper to
improve or extend their existing home than to
move up the housing ladder. Again, with clever
marketing, it is an area where we as a sector can
take advantage of and open up the vision to the
homeowners through our installers – an improve,
don’t move campaign!
Supply chain issues and material costs
Supply chain issues and rising material costs
have been two of the biggest challenges that we
have faced as an industry over the last couple of
years.
As a PVC-U systems company, it was as much of
a stressful and frustrating period for ourselves as
it was for all concerned.
As a business, we prospered far better than many
and managed to resolve supply issues some time
back now, and far more quickly than others within
the industry.
Thankfully, as we go in to 2023, I’m happy to
say that those frustrations now seem firmly
behind us!
PVC-U raw material costs now look like they
have peaked and levelled out, and there are
possibilities of a decrease in raw material costs
in the coming months.
“To help you through the challenges ahead, it
is vitally important that you choose the right
partnerships for you and your business”
This is very welcome news after a period where
they were increasing day-by-day, making it very
difficult to plan and manage. From the outset, it
has always been the intention of Selecta to pass on
any savings to customers if and when they occur.
Choosing the right partnerships
To help you through the challenges ahead, it
is vitally important that you choose the right
partnerships for you and your business.
Why am I telling you this? Putting it quite simply
and as you know, your supply chain is an
extension of your business.
Moving forward, it’s essential that fabricators
and installers partner with the right window and
door system and supplier.
One that can provide future-proofed window
and door solutions to meet the demands of your
customers.
One that is looking at long-term innovation and
development of its products and services.
One that can provide a range of marketing and
technical support tools and services. Selecta are
ready when you are.
They fail, you fail. Whether that’s product, service
or support related, your supplier is a reflection
of you and your business. In good and bad times
you need to be able to rely on and trust your
suppliers.
Colour Trends
SETTING THE STANDARD
SYSTEMS
Total Fabricator hears from experts at The Residence Collection, who have pulled together the
top five colours that they believe are set to be a hit this year.
A
new year brings many things with it,
including new interior styles and colour
schemes.
Residence Collection says that cool
greens could be one of the colour
trends to look out for in 2023
Magenta
Paint company Pantone has chosen Viva Magenta
as their colour of the year for 2023 – a bright,
bold pink shade that’s sure to capture attention.
You can expect to see a lot of this colour in homes
next year, from pops of colour introduced in soft
furnishings, curtains or decorative items, to
statement walls, furniture pieces or fully painted
rooms.
Red-oranges
Another bold colour palette that’s set to pop in
2023 are shades of red-orange, especially since
Benjamin Moore announced its colour of the year
for 2023 is Raspberry Blush, a fiery red-orange.
Many consumers are looking for more expressive,
bold pops of colour to take over after neutrals have
taken centre stage in previous years, and warm
pops of red and orange are sure to do just that.
Similar to magenta, introducing the colour in
accents such as cushions, curtains, throws is a
great way to introduce the colour to a home, or
you can go all out with statement walls.
Warm neutrals
Despite bold colours predicted to take over in
2023, it doesn’t mean the reign of neutrals is
over. 2023 will see the resurgence of warm
neutrals, as opposed to cooler shades seen
in previous years, with earthy, warm tones
reminiscent of nature and the natural world
taking centre stage.
Warm neutrals create a super cosy and inviting
space, and include warm browns and creams,
see our Forest Collection or Bronze and Vintage
cream shades.
The beauty of neutral colours is their versatility,
so from wall colours, to furniture, and with the
Residence Collection your windows too, it’s easy
to incorporate this style into homes.
Warm yellows
Yellow is a warming and cosy colour, so it’s
no surprise that we expect to see it pop up in
homes even more in 2023.
Yellow comes in a variety of different shades,
and it’s the warmer-toned hues that are
expected to surge in popularity in the new year.
Yellows help make a space seem warmer and
cosier, such as our Cotswold Biscuit shade, and
we predict many people moving away from cooler
tones to these warmer hues in 2023.
Cool greens
Green has been a popular interior shade in recent
years, and it isn’t going away anytime soon.
While warm shades are set to surge in popularity
in 2023, cool-toned, muted green shades are
still the most popular green hues; think sage and
blue-toned greens.
These colours are a great base for many homes,
and lend themselves to popular interior styles
such as Japandi or Biophilic homes, which are
all about bringing the outside in and connecting
to nature.
Try our Cotswold Green, Sage or Painswick
colours to match this trend.
A PREMIER ADDITION WITH 2,000FT 2 MEZZANINE FLOOR
Arched frame manufacturer Premier Arches has further expanded its production facility with the
installation of a new 2,000 square foot mezzanine floor at its St Helens headquarters.
The additional production space will be used purely for profile bending, allowing the company to really ramp
up and streamline its processes.
The latest expansion takes Premier Arches’ total manufacturing space to 12,000 square feet, and is a
testament to the company’s continued success over the past 12 months.
Managing Director Sean Greenall commented: “Over the past three years, we’ve outgrown our premises
and have consistently gained new customers who are looking for not only high-quality products, but easy and
honest service.
“The new mezzanine is an extremely worthwhile investment, as it will allow us to successfully meet
continued demand while still delivering the quality our customers are used to.” www.premierarches.co.uk
SWEDISH MANUFACTURER JOINS SECURED BY DESIGN
Swedish window manufacturer LEIAB Windows has joined Secured by Design, the official police security
initiative.
LEIAB, situated in Mariannelund, Sweden, is a bespoke manufacturer of high-performance windows and
doorsets in composite timber/aluminium materials, manufacturing more than 50,000 products each year
destined for a wide variety of residential projects throughout Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.
LEIAB’s Secured by Design accredited products also include its timber aluminium composite door range, a selection available in double or single leaf,
fully glazed, and offering a high level of security to the property. Alfie Hosker, Secured by Design, said: “I am delighted that LEIAB Windows has joined
Secured by Design with their timber aluminium clad door and window range, and understand that they may be looking to extend this soon. I look forward
to this being a successful relationship with them over the coming years.” www.leiab.co.uk/en
PATIO DOOR WARM TO THE CORE FOR HOMEOWNERS
Given the new building regulations and a drive for better energy efficiency Kurt in Greatrex patio doors, (pictured) profine founded
Dekko Window Systems with Gary
says the Warmcore solution offers double and triple glazing options within a system that also
boasts a number of premium performance features.
With a U-value of 1.4 W/(m 2 K) double glazed and 1.0 W/(m 2 K) triple glazed, Warmcore is available in two,
three and four pane variants. It’s also a system with complete design flexibility and the option of both single
colour or dual-colour options, and there’s also a thermally broken low threshold available. The Warmcore
patio door is also said to incorporate soft close technology, also known as a safety brake, as an optional
upgrade which helps prevent trapped fingers and unintentional slamming, particularly useful when children
are around. Carefully engineered, these built-in safety brakes guarantee soft, dampened operation, helping prevent misuse. www.profine-uk.com
PREPARATION IS KEY FOR LEKA IN 2023
Leka Systems says it is preparing for a busy 2023 because its products help homeowners create more
energy efficient homes.
Rhys Hoddinott, MD of Leka Systems, said: “Sky-high energy prices mean more and more homeowners are
looking at ways to make their homes more energy efficient. The Leka Warm Roof and the Leka Orangery roof are
perfect solutions for upgrading failing or thermally inefficient conservatory roofs and helping to reduce energy
bills. As a result, we are already seeing a strong upturn in consumer enquiries.”
Leka says its roofing solutions transform conservatories that are too hot in summer or too cold in winter
because they have U-values as low as 0.10W/m²K, helping to make homes more thermally efficient as well as create more usable living space. Certified
Leka fabricators receive full training and support to help them make the most of the potential of the products. www.epwinwindowsystems.co.uk
HIGHLIGHT PASSIVHAUS PRINCIPLES, SAYS REHAU
With the ongoing energy crisis further underlining the need for energy-efficient structure design,
fenestration professionals are being implored by systems house REHAU to highlight the importance of
Passivhaus principles to futureproof new and existing building stock.
According to REHAU, the Passivhaus performance criteria can provide fabricators with a key tool for securing
new business in the drive to more sustainable properties. Specifically, Steve Tonkiss, Head of Sales – South at
the polymer supplier, is highlighting how educating commercial project stakeholders on Passivhaus principles
and their impact on window design, can help fenestration professionals stand out in competitive markets.
He said: “The fabricator has a major role to play in ensuring architects and specifiers stakeholders consider
the principles when selecting frames for new and retrofit commercial projects, and the major impact window
selection can have. This is especially important considering recent updates to the Future Homes Standard and ongoing speculation that thermal performance
requirements will soon begin to mirror this strict certification – something that is already being discussed in Scotland.” https://window.rehau.com/uk-en
CLIP-IN BEAD OPTION ADDED TO CLASSIC RANGE
Sheerline has launched the latest addition to its Classic range, the clip-in bead option.
Sheerline says customers choosing the new clip-in bead version can still expect the same secure, ultra slim,
high-performance aluminium frames they are familiar with. But now with the added flexibility of being able to
supply frames and glass separately. Sheerline says using a simple clip-in bead based on the Prestige bead
design, Classic, is said to eliminate the need for time-consuming wedge gasketing. There’s also no requirement
to mill the beads during manufacture, keeping this latest development as fabricator friendly as possible. It is
available in the same two sash styles as with the rest of Sheerline’s thermally efficient range, Stepped and
Contemporary. Windows are available in two outer frame sizes, both available in flush fitting, or as standard options to meet homeowners’ specific
requirements. Sheerline CEO, Roger Hartshorn said: “Our new clip-in bead system is a game-changer for fabricators.” www.sheerline.com
A SMART ADDITION FOR DURHAM-BASED FABRICATOR
PVC-U and aluminium fabricator the TWR Group has enhanced its portfolio Kurt with Greatrex the (pictured) introduction founded
Dekko Window Systems with
of Smart’s AluSpace.
The interior steel-look door and screening system has been designed as an alternative to its Alitherm
Heritage windows and doors and is normally single glazed, not thermally broken, and can be sprayed
any colour to match the interiors, with black as standard. Developed to create light and airy internal
environments, AluSpace can be used to divide residential or commercial spaces of any shape and size,
while at the same time providing an effective acoustic barrier, and its sleek and elegant lines perfectly
complement TWR Group’s aluminium window and door ranges. TWR Group Director Laura Richardson said: “Despite being an exterior system, Smart’s
Heritage products are widely used internally. AluSpace is a dedicated interior steel look system which effectively divides spaces and creates highly
attractive screens and doors.” www.twrgroup.co.uk
HWL REVEALS TIP FOR EFFICIENT MANUFACTURE
Leeds-based trade fabricator HWL Windows has revealed that processing all of its product designs –
regardless of system and profile material – with Window Designer from First Degree Systems is key to
efficiency within the business.
HWL has been in operation for 20 years, and has used Window Designer to process its designs for all of
that time. In the last five years, the company has switched its purchase agreement to a subscription model,
which has given the fabricator access to more functions within the Window Designer suite of software, such
as Stock Assistant and Barcode Tracking. “In the last five years, we’ve changed our approach to software,”
Graham Howatson, HWL Director said. “We recognise that it is a necessary requirement in the business, and
it’s becoming even more important. As a result of running our high-end Residence Collection PVC-U products
through the Window Designer suite of software, we knew it worked.” www.firstdegreesystems.com
Door Trends
TALKING 2023 TRENDS
In his first column of 2023, Ben Aspinall, Head of IT & Marketing at DoorCo, offers insight
into the distribution side of the company and the recent trends seen through its fabricator
customers...
Doorco has designed
additional connector
parts for its FLiP
cassette range
For DoorCo, distribution – the supply
of composite door components for
manufacturing – remains central to our
business.
It is a fundamental part of the supply chain as
fabricators need the opportunity to own their
share of the market, differentiate, add value, and
deliver high quality and aesthetically pleasing
doors across all markets, from retail installers
and homeowners, to the commercial new build
and social housing sectors.
Hot off the back of our G-Award ‘Component
Supplier of the Year’ win, we thought we’d
examine the trends we’re seeing on this side of
the business.
Flexibility
Being independent means DoorCo can flex, both
in service and product development. FLiP and
the flexibility it brings to door designs is a great
example. Our distribution customers are using FLiP
to create all types of traditional and modern door
designs through their production innovation hubs.
FLiP has got even more flexible as it’s now
available for any composite door on the market.
We’ve created additional connector parts so that
FLiP now fits 44mm, 48mm, 68mm & 70mm
composite doors. These new connectors are in
stock and ready to go.
When it comes to service, many of our distribution
customers take advantage of our flexible prepping
service to boost capacity or create one-off doors.
One of the most popular services is painting and
we’re seeing increased demand for GRiPCORE
slabs painted in Agate Grey, Slate & Cotswold.
We’ve recently expanded our painting lines
in DoorCo with a state-of-the-art Schubox
automated paint line. To test this new equipment
and to support demand from our GRiPCORE
DoorCo has seen an increase in demand on special options when looking at the glass of a door.
customers, we’re painting some of the more
popular lines in these top three colours to stock in
January for faster delivery.
Colour
Expanding on colour, the feedback we have
received on the TWiNTONE and METALLiC
cassette systems we launched at FIT Show last
year has been very positive.
Customers are taking this concept a step further
creating doors that really stand out from the crowd.
A great example is a black FLiP cassette on an
Agate Grey door, with our exclusive Tectronic
GLAZiNG, a black outer frame and black hardware.
The results are impressive, with one-of-a-kind
designs being seen on ORiGINAL composite door.
GLAZiNG
Tectronic GLAZiNG is totally exclusive to DoorCo as
it was designed by Jeyda, our creative consultant.
Glass is one of the components that really
elevates door design and we’ve worked hard to
cultivate a range of exclusive DoorCo GLAZiNG
designs, like Tectronic and also Metropolis.
There is a definite increase in demand on these
special options from our distribution customers
as they seek to enhance their door product
offering to stand out from the crowd.
Designer doors
The designer doors we offer are unique to DoorCo
and demand for them keeps on rising. Monza
II and Links are both high end and stylish, but
with an affordable price point, and they are
both making a real impact on the designer door
markets.
Brought to you by DoorCo
All this choice and flexibility is supported
by a dedicated team and two large wellstocked
warehouses (65,000 sq. ft) delivering
a comprehensive range of composite door
components to customers, when they need them.
DoorCo is the only composite door supplier to
offer both a foam core door slab (ORiGINAL)
and a solid timber core slab (GRiPCORE) as
well as our own cassette system (FLiP). We also
provide a range of DoorCo Approved Components
(GLAZiNG & PAiNT).
This product range means we have complete
control over the major components in the supply
chain and delivers customers choice and the
opportunity to create a multitude of different
traditional, contemporary and designer door
designs that suit any home.
DoorCo invests on behalf of our customers to
ensure that together we can keep the composite
door market durable, innovative and fresh,
supported by flexibility and choice.
This is what sets DoorCo apart, and why the
G-Award judges deemed us worthy of being
named Component Supplier of the Year.
Digital Presence
A POSITIVE INFLUENCE
Lorna Lockwood, Senior Graphic Designer at Distinction Doors, discusses how the company
has built its online presence in order to drive sales...
Instagram has over 32 million monthly users
in the UK. It sits just below Facebook as the
country’s second most popular social media
platform, ahead of Twitter and LinkedIn.
Since its launch Instagram has evolved,
becoming far more than a photo sharing platform.
Today, inspirational and aspirational images and
posts are peppered with adverts, endorsements
and influencer campaigns.
This has changed the landscape for Instagram
users and opened a world of opportunity for
businesses. It is enabling companies to build
brands in a visual and creative manner and
engage directly with their target audience.
Strategic presence
While social media has long been part of our
marketing mix, we are relatively new to Instagram.
Distinction Doors landed on the platform in April
2022 to coincide with our brand refresh.
Strategically, we feel that Instagram is a vitally
important tool in helping us boost our consumer
pull.
Since April, we have grown our following and
reached an extraordinary number of accounts.
Using Google Analytics, we have also been able
to track the number of visitors to our website
from the platform. Our profile visits are also a
good indicator of consumer interest in our brand
and products.
Lifestyle images
Naturally, images have played a massive role
in building our presence. As the UK’s largest
supplier of composite doors, we have access to
an abundance of product and lifestyle imagery.
The latter is essential for impact, and I am
pleased to say that we have recently boosted our
gallery with a selection of new CGI lifestyle shots,
curated specifically for Instagram.
Distinction Doors’ Venture
collection. Inset: Lorna Lockwood
These are available to our
customers for marketing
purposes. We are also working with our
customers to develop a portfolio of real-life
lifestyle images. In fact, this is one of the reasons
why we have begun influencer marketing.
Influencer marketing
Last year, we partnered with Fascia Place
to supply and fit a new entrance door for
Instagram user, Ellie, posting under the handle
‘sevenpalmtreehouse’.
Ellie is using Instagram to chart the renovation
of her house by the sea and has 22.6k followers.
She has the relevance, reach and resonance
that we require. Her audience is aligned with
our target audience and while relatively small
compared to some Instagram influencers in this
sector, it is effective for our purposes.
The new door – a nxt-gen Esteem in Distinction
Agate Grey with Kara Brass glazing was fitted
in October. Ellie shared her door journey with
her followers – starting with the condition of
her existing door, to viewing our brochure and
selecting her new door style, colour and glazing,
right through to the completed installation.
The final post generated almost 300 Likes and
received plenty of positive comments.
Direct impact
As a business it is important that we monitor the
true impact of marketing campaigns such as this
and so we are working with Fascia Place to see
how sales are performing as a direct result. We
are already aware of several confirmed orders off
the back of Ellie’s post.
Influencer marketing is a key component of our
marketing strategy for 2023, and I am pleased to
say that we already have several in the pipeline,
including a celebrity.
In addition, we are also trialling Instagram
competitions. Our recent ‘win a Bloom &
Wild Christmas wreath’ giveaway was hugely
successful, receiving thousands of entries.
Driving customer sales
The influencer campaign is just one of the ways
we work with and support our customers on social
media and online. Last year our digital footprint
increased significantly. Our page views on LinkedIn
rose more than 700% compared to 2021.
Similarly, on Facebook accounts reached YTD was
up almost 200% on the previous year. All our
customers benefit from this reach, engagement
and exposure. Nowhere is this more apparent
than when reviewing our website statistics.
Our Showroom Locator, Request a Brochure
and door-designer are critical indicators of our
consumer reach – they trigger footfall, enquiries
and quotes, which ultimately drives business
opportunities for our customers.
VBH GETS A GRIP ON TILT/SLIDE
For further updates, visit www.total-fabricator.co.uk
VBH has introduced a new greenteQ handle set range for tilt/slide patio doors.
The company says tilt/slide patio doors continue to be a popular option. Their ability to offer a
large opening when in the Slide mode or controlled ventilation in the Tilt position makes them a
popular alternative to standard in-line sliding patio doors. VBH says many people prefer the fact
that they offer locking points around the whole door sash.
The new BGT10 handle sets are taken from VBH’s Continental greenteQ product range and,
as such, are available in the finishes most popular in Europe. These are white, brown, F1 silver
anodised, F4 bronze anodised, and F9 dark silver anodised. There are Standard and Slim variants
available. The Standard external lever stands off the door face by 51mm, while the Slim outer
handle stands off by just 24mm, allowing it to pass the fixed mullion as the door slides open.
Gary Gleeson, Marketing Manager at VBH, said: “The greenteQ brand is very strong within the patio door sector. Although tilt/slide doors are not in the same
sales volume bracket as bi-folds, lift/slides or inline sliders, there is still a healthy market for them, and we sell a lot of tilt/slide hardware. We’re very pleased
to have been able to introduce one of our German handle ranges into our UK product portfolio to give fabricators here a greenteQ option.” www.vbhgb.com
COMP DOOR RARING TO RETURN TO FIT SHOW 2023
After making its debut at the FIT Show in 2022, Comp Door has announced that it will be
returning to show for a second time in May this year.
Comp Door says its solid timber core composite door won industry-acclaim last year when it
became the first door of its kind to meet Part L regulations and was recognised by G22 awards as
a finalist in the New Product of the Year category.
The company began manufacturing in March last year from its 46,000 sq. ft factory in
Staffordshire.
Comp Door’s first year also saw the launch of several new products, including French Doors and
Arched Frames, with Stable Doors also currently in development. All these products and more exciting new concepts will be on Comp Door’s stand K31
at the FIT Show’s 10th anniversary in May 2023.
Richard Diliberto, Comp Door’s Sales Director, commented: “We’ve had a spectacular first year thanks to the support we’ve had from installers,
many of whom we had initial conversations with at our first FIT Show in 2022. We’re looking forward to returning to the NEC in May to present our new
products and concepts, and to catch up with our existing customers and hopefully meet some more new ones.” https://compdoor.co.uk
SHEERLINE HOLDS SUCCESSFUL CUSTOMER OPEN DAYS
Sheerline has held several open days for its fabricator customers at its HQ in Nether Heage,
Derbyshire.
The company said the open days provided an opportunity for senior members of the team to highlight its
achievements over the past few years and showcase its new products that will be available in early 2023.
This includes a new Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door, which completes the Prestige door range.
The team also took customers through the benefits of the new beaded option for the ultra-slim, ultrasecure
Classic range, as well as showing how fabricator and fitter friendly the new SBD option for the
award winning S1 lantern is. After showcasing its new products, the team provided a comprehensive tour
of Sheerline’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the opportunity to see the in-house powder coating plant
in operation, which has benefited from over £1.2 million in investment.
Sheerline CEO, Roger Hartshorn said: “We’re delighted with the success of our customer open days and look forward to holding more in the future. It’s a
great opportunity for us to showcase what we’re doing at Sheerline, which is pushing the bounds of what is possible within the fenestration industry by using
technology to innovate and set ourselves apart from our competitors.” www.sheerline.com
A CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO ITS CUSTOMERS
DoorCo has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its composite door distribution service
following its G-Award success as Component Supplier of the Year.
“Our distribution product and service offering are fully flexible and it’s this approach to supply that
sets DoorCo apart,” explained Mark Towers, Head of Operations at Doorco. “The distribution side of
the business – the supply of composite door components for manufacturing – is fundamental, not
only to our business, but to the entire supply chain: fabricators need the opportunity to own their
share of the market, differentiate, add value, and deliver high quality and aesthetically pleasing
doors across all markets, from retail installers and homeowners to the commercial new build and
social housing sectors. It is our position in the supply chain to support this and while some door
suppliers are moving away from offering a distribution only service, it remains very much in focus
at DoorCo. While many fabricators have the in-house facilities to fully manufacture doors, many
DoorCo customers dip into some of our prepping services like painting and glazing to create or
support their own capacity. DoorCo invests on behalf of our customers to ensure that the composite door market is durable, innovative and fresh, supported by
flexibility and choice.” www.door-co.com
NEW WAVE IN HARMONY WITH PERFECT MONTH
Despite industry-wide supply chain issues recently, door manufacturer New Wave Doors
reported fulfilling every one of its orders on time and in full throughout November 2022.
The Bristol-based manufacturer has seen demand for its alternative to traditional bi-fold doors
increase considerably in recent years – and has always been proud of its ability to fulfil orders
quickly and efficiently.
New Wave Doors Production Director, Ben Warren, commented: “Maintaining high OTIF scores is
something we’ve been focusing on since the pandemic, and we’ve achieved over 90% OTIF since
April. The fact we have been able to deliver 100% of our orders on time and in full for the whole of
November shows that our hard work is paying off. The biggest influence has been our new software system. We found off-the-shelf systems just weren’t
delivering what we needed, so we are working with our own software developers and have invested in a system that has been designed specifically
for our business. It allows for full QR code scanning throughout the factory, which gives full transparency throughout our manufacturing processes. We
can simply log in and see exactly what’s going on at any given point. Like nearly all companies in the industry, we’ve been at the mercy of supply chain
issues. But we’ve taken the necessary steps to combat these, and it’s fantastic to see those are paying off and our customers can rely on New Wave
Doors to reliably and consistently fulfil their orders.” www.newwavedoors.co.uk
VINTAGE STILL APPEALS
ODL Europe says it has reported strong demand for its 1930s-inspired Craftsman composite
door designs, with the shift from consumers to distinctive traditional styling still reportedly
proving popular.
The company’s Trafalgar Square range was based on the Arts and Crafts-style door that combines
decorative glazing options with the best in traditional styling. Suzanne Nicholl, Head of Sales and
Customer Services at ODL Europe, explained: “Craftsman-style composite doors have always been
popular in period properties, but we are now seeing an uptake in contemporary new builds and modern
refurbishments too. Our Craftsman range evokes the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement and features
the traditional ratio of a top third glazing and two thirds panel, emphasising the stunning woodgrain
effect on our doors.”
The Capstone 44mm door slab is manufactured using 2mm thick GRP SMC skins for impact
resistance. Stiles and rails are manufactured from a water-resistant pure PVC polymer and reinforced
using LVL (Laminated Veneered Lumber) timbers with a minimum density of 570 kg/m 3 . The SMC skins and sub-frame door assembly are fully bonded
using a urethane adhesive resin. And for peace of mind, all ODL Europe door slabs are covered by a 10-year structural warranty. www.odleurope.com
Fabricator Support
GROW WITH THEM
Andy McDonnell, Managing Director at Eurocell, explains how the company can help
fabricators create opportunities for new business and growth by providing the right offer to
As we move into 2023, market conditions
continue to prove challenging – but
the opportunities for new business
and sustained growth are clearly there for
fabricators who are ready and able to provide
the right offer to customers.
New build programmes continue to spring up
around the country, providing the opportunity to
win significant and sustained work by building
partnerships with larger contractors and their
sub-contractors.
On a smaller scale, many homeowners are
looking to add garden rooms to their properties to
create extra space and allow them to better enjoy
the British summer.
its customers...
To harness these opportunities, however, it is vital
fabricators select the best and most appropriate
partners to enable them to deliver the best
possible overall service to their customers.
A critical choice
Whether you are a small, family business
servicing mainly local domestic customers,
or a larger fabricator dealing with both
residential and commercial contracts, the
need to set yourself apart from the crowd is
critical to winning and retaining business in an
increasingly competitive marketplace.
That makes the choice of supplier partner
an absolutely critical one. While high-quality
products are of course a prerequisite, product
quality on its own will not cut the mustard for
fabricators seeking – as they should – to offer
premium added value to their customers.
Fabricators should always examine carefully what
other services and support a supplier partner is
prepared to offer, and how much that partner is
prepared to invest in a long-term partnership.
Eurocell’s registered fabricators have access to support whenever required. Inset: Andy McDonnell
Product availability is of through a comprehensive change-over
access to an account engineer providing training
and practical support throughout their partnership
with Eurocell.
Eurocell Recycle can recycle
44,000 tonnes of PVC-U annually
The assistance available extends into the
provision of ongoing technical and specification
support for fabricators, as well as any contractors
and installers working on their behalf.
This covers product testing for BSI / CEN
solutions; complete product specification support
including calculation of wind loads and U-values,
and the provision of sample specifications for
bespoke project designs.
Eurocell’s dedicated new build team can even
help train installers to maximise efficiency onsite.
On-site toolbox talks are also provided to
help ensure both builders and installers deliver
the best possible installation.
The support available from Eurocell extends
well beyond purely engineering and technical
aspects, however.
‘Grow with us’
At Eurocell, we want fabricators to ‘grow with
us’ – expanding their business and securing their
long-term futures. And we recognise that can
only be achieved through a holistic approach to
supporting their businesses.
Each fabricator, therefore, has access to a
dedicated account manager to work with them
to develop their business, from support with
daily requirements through to overarching
strategic planning.
The account manager will even liaise
with Eurocell customer service and senior
management on behalf of their fabricator,
enabling them to get on with what they do best.
Our philosophy is ‘our team is your team’ and this
is testament to this approach.
Central to business growth is, of course, lead
generation – and that is an area where Eurocell is
uniquely placed to deliver for its fabricators.
Eurocell has forged strong relationships with
many premier housebuilders who have first-hand
experience of Eurocell systems and are keen
to specify them on their new developments –
enabling Eurocell to provide leads in line with the
growth aspirations of individual fabricators.
Eurocell also develops a continuous flow of
specialist CPD modules for specifiers, which
has itself become a constant source of new
commercial opportunities.
As a business, Eurocell also identifies installer
prospects in your local area, then canvasses
and converts them into leads on behalf of our
fabricators, while also promoting conservatory
roof systems (CRS) which are another area where
we can provide leads.
Here, quotes can be provided in less than
one hour, with flexible delivery options to suit
individual fabricator needs, with technical
support whenever and wherever needed.
Continuous investment
Finally, as a business, we continue to invest
to drive awareness of our brand and demand,
resulting in a consistent flow of leads from
homeowners seeking new and replacement
windows, doors, conservatory roofs, and garden
rooms.
The ‘Grow with us’ ethos extends to other aspects
of our operations too. We recognise that for us
and our fabricators to continue to thrive in the
long term, the need to innovate is critical.
As a business, Eurocell invests some £5 million
each year in new products, but equally we invest
in researching and understanding new markets
– where our agile culture means we can move
quickly to create the best products and solutions
to meet market needs. This itself provides
opportunities for fabricators to expand the range
of products they manufacture and enables them
to regularly offer new, high-quality, and supremely
efficient systems to their customers.
Finally, it’s important to reference the benefits
fabricators can gain from our sustainability focus,
which includes Eurocell Recycle, which not only
takes the hassle out of removing your waste, but
also means you receive payment for the waste.
Eurocell Recycle enables us to recycle old
products at the end of their life into new PVC-U
profiles and we process approximately 44,000
tonnes of PVC-U waste annually, equivalent to
around 3.4m window frames.
At Eurocell, our UK-wide network of fabricators
is integral to our success, and every action we
take is geared to driving their expansion and
competitiveness through a mutually rewarding,
long-term collaboration.
SCHTEC - THE BEST KEPT SECRET?
Danny Jones, Technical Director for Kall Kwik Machinery, discusses the launch of Schtec
Makine’s product range in the UK, and the benefits and savings it can offer its customers.
At Kall Kwik, we’re always focused on
delivering the best products possible, at
the best price.
It’s something we’ve built our reputation upon, and
we always want to ensure our clients are getting
the most cost-effective machinery that suits them
and their needs.
Alongside our range from URBAN and FOM, we’ve
added another string to our bow, introducing the
Schtec range to the UK market.
Schtec Makine was launched in 2013 by a group
of experienced engineers and designers, and has
been producing high-quality, affordable machinery
for the European market for close to a decade.
Its range encompasses all the latest innovations
and considerations for manufacturers, but with a
difference.
Danny Jones (right) with Schtec Sales Manager Ömer Naci
Konuksever
All Schtec machinery is constructed using the
highest-quality parts and componentry which
match the capabilities and demands of more
expensive pieces of machinery, without the
premium price point. Schtec’s range includes
machinery for both PVC-U and aluminium systems.
Constructed and designed with the same
components and features that manufacturers
would expect in top-of-the-line German machinery,
Schtec’s systems make use of industry-leading
Beckhoff automation software, and even the
screws used are manufactured by Würth.
By focusing on creating high-quality, affordable
machinery, Schtec has really carved out a niche for
themselves in the industry.
The company focus on delivering the best
machinery for the best price is an ethos we can get
AUTOMATION
The CP 290 Corner Crimping
Machine will be available in the
UK as part of the Schtec range
this year
behind here at Kall Kwik, and when the products
are so well-made and constructed with the best
materials available, it’s a no-brainer for us to give
our stamp of approval.
We really anticipate the new range to shake things
up within the industry.
Problem solver
Introducing such a competitive player to the market
will no doubt come with its own challenges, but
when you have faith in the product, and are aware
of the problems the Schtec range can solve, I’m
sure they’ll have no problem carving out a name
for themselves within the UK market.
After a small boom within the glazing sector
following the pandemic, where people had the
spare cash around to invest in larger scale home
improvement projects, we’re now starting to see
something of a downturn.
Not just regarding the work available, but in the
types of jobs that companies are able to take on.
This includes the ways that fabricators can reinvest
in themselves.
Speaking from our experience, there has been
a massive uptick in the demand for refurbished
“We’re thrilled to be Schtec’s partner here in the
UK, and we can’t wait to see what sort of impact
their range has on the market”
machinery, as companies aren’t willing to part
with large amounts of money to simply maintain a
theoretical advantage over their competition.
They need machinery that will save them money
and produce real, tangible results.
Of course, there are drawbacks to purchasing
refurbished machinery, no matter how well restored
it is.
Purchasing new gives suppliers and fabricators the
peace of mind that their machine will begin working
for them from the moment that it is installed.
The Schtec range more than guarantees the best fit
for many businesses.
I could go on all day about the quality construction
of the machines, the parts used, and the software
that they utilise, but we know that our customers
can’t argue with results.
We’re thrilled to be Schtec’s partner here in the UK,
and we can’t wait to see what sort of impact their
range has on the market.
Excited for 2023
It’s been a really encouraging few months, and
going through 2023, we’re excited to see what
sort of developments and innovations we’ll see
throughout the glazing industry this year.
At Kall Kwik, we believe we offer one of the best
product ranges in the industry, and with our core
ACE support package that provides advice, care,
and engineering to all of our customers, we believe
that all of our fabricators will be on track for an
amazing 2023.
Schtec may be the best kept secret in the industry,
but not for much longer…
Industry 4.0
THE ADVANTAGES ARE REAL
AUTOMATION
Neil Parton, Managing Director of machinery expert elumatec, discusses the implementation of
Industry 4.0, what it means and how it will give your company a ‘competitive edge’...
Manufacturing and information technology
used to be two very distinct sectors.
Not any more. When machines can be
equipped with wireless technologies that don’t
simply monitor and control, but make decisions,
optimise workflows and prevent breakdowns, we
are clearly in a new era.
But while this new industrial revolution has clear
benefits, adoption rates are not what they could
be. Perhaps the jargon and buzzwords are offputting.
Industrial Internet of Things, machine
learning, cyber-physical systems – all these
terms, or their acronyms, can easily alienate
the engineer proud of his time-honed skill or the
machine operator scheduling processes with a
blend of experience and gut feel.
Maybe the skills gap is the reason. Or could it
be that the hype is just too much? It’s easy to
become jaded by tales of developments that offer
benefits beyond our wildest dreams.
I expect there are many causes, but I know two
things:
1: A manufacturer that’s going to thrive in the
long term needs to have alignment between
its operational strategy and its digital one. The
systems should not be in opposition.
2: Despite being branded as a major revolution,
transformation can be gradual. Industry 4.0
technologies can be implemented in small,
simple and manageable steps which can make a
significant difference.
Let’s look at the kinds of things these
technologies make possible and why they matter.
Survival of the fittest?
We all know that the world has changed. News
reports tell us about labour and skills shortages.
There is disruption in supply chains. Energy
prices have rocketed. Uncertainty isn’t a shortterm
issue but the new normal.
Elumatec Managing Director Neil Parton
Those manufacturers that have eliminated waste
will be stronger. The ones that can turnaround
orders faster will secure the deal. The ones
whose machines monitor themselves won’t suffer
breakdowns. The ones that model new products
using augmented or virtual reality don’t have to
wait weeks for a physical prototype before they
can test the concept.
Over time, those adopting Industry 4.0
technologies will gain a competitive edge. They
will be more efficient, more responsive and more
adaptable. They will be the survivors.
This isn’t an industrial revolution that we should be
resisting or avoiding. It’s one we should embrace.
In simple terms, all this is possible because
information is collected, analysed and used to
improve how things are done. The processors can
do it faster than we can, that’s all.
So how do we go about adoption? The short
answer is by taking small, well-planned steps.
Leaping-in could alienate employees, provoking
resistance. Without adequate planning,
investments could be made in digitising
processes that were already working optimally.
Instead, an organisation should look at their
people, their processes, their existing technology,
the challenges they face and the opportunities
they could exploit. Then they should identify the
issues that Industry 4.0 technologies could solve.
If that sounds too simple, apologies. I understand
that in-depth consideration is required, and that
investments must be sound. But I also know how
many of elumatec’s customers are singing the
praises of our Industry 4.0 eluCloud software. I
know customers want machinery where performance
is optimised by these technologies. There’s already a
lot of interest in our new Industry 4.0 ready eluCloud
SBZ 155 and the SBZ 125/85 machining centres.
The steps to successful adoption:
1: Understand where you are now. Learn about
where Industry 4.0 technology could improve your
operation. Get advice and talk to your peers.
2: Draft a plan. Include not only the technology you
want to adopt, but also the impact on stakeholders.
3: Share your vision internally and with key
partners. Ensure your team are on-board. Secure
funding. Ensure resources are adequate. Think
about training or recruiting to solve any skills gaps.
4: Start with the quick wins. Upgrade your
existing systems if possible.
5: Keep moving forward. Overnight miracles are
rare but long-term benefits can be huge.
And 6: Review, review, review.
One last thing
I’m a big believer in the power of Industry 4.0.
I know the possibilities it offers can transform
struggling businesses into success stories that
other manufacturers would love to emulate. But
there’s a big proviso: does it make sense for your
operation and its objectives?
Always consider whether the technology aligns
with your strategy. Does it offer something your
market wants? If it doesn’t, why do it?
EMMEGI MACHINE A PERFECT FIT
Until investing in an Emmegi Phantomatic T3A CNC machining centre, Cannock-based Cube
Commercial said it had been carrying out all its aluminium profile preparations using punch
tooling and a copy router.
Cube Commercial said its fabrication team were skilled and experienced so the quality was
good, but Paul Grenfell, Cube’s Director, knew it could be even better. He said: “Emmegi has
an outstanding reputation in this industry for the usability and reliability of its machines, and
when we spoke to a couple of other aluminium fabricators in our area, they had no hesitation in
recommending them. In fact, it was a friend of mine in the industry who suggested the Phantomatic
T3A and said it would suit the structure and vision of our company perfectly.” The Phantomatic T3A
three axes machining centre contains an angular machining head and a saw blade for machining
on all five faces of the workpiece and comes with an eight-piece tool magazine. It also has an automatically positioned clamp unit and a high torque 5.5kW
electro-spindle. Paul Grenfell added: “Since the T3A was installed, we have certainly seen a significant improvement in our productivity and better precision,
accuracy and overall quality in our frames. As you would expect, our fabrication team are very pleased with our investment – they can focus more on
efficiency and quality control now and on delivering the repeatability and consistency that our commercial clients demand.” www.emmegi.com/en/home
AN ADVANTAGE TO HAVING AVANTEK MACHINERY
When a power surge damaged a critical electronic component leaving family-owned Bonmahon Joinery’s
production line completely out of order, its incumbent machinery supplier was unable to resolve the issue.
With his faith in the existing machinery supplier’s reliability badly shaken, Bonmahon Founder and Director,
John Roche, began searching for a new one, with excellent customer service and reliable technical support at the
forefront of his mind. A recommendation from a fellow fabricator and existing Avantek customer during the 2018
FIT Show, led John to approaching the company.
Confidence in the partnership has more recently seen Bonmahon switching its PVC-U profile supply to Liniar,
part of the Quanex group and a sister company to Avantek.
John commented: “The manufacturing process is now a lot smoother with the upgraded equipment. Both our
efficiency and the quality of our finished products have significantly improved, and we’re also finding the Liniar profiles very straightforward to work with.”
John’s daughter Gillian, who helps run the business, added: “We’re manufacturing the best windows we’ve ever made in terms of overall performance.
We’re out in the countryside on the Atlantic coast, a really exposed location, and we need a product that can withstand harsh conditions such as strong
winds and belting rain.” www.avantekmachinery.co.uk
HAFFNER ENDS 2022 WITH G22 AWARD
Haffner ended 2022 by being named as Machinery Supplier of the Year at the G22 Awards.
This was the first time the category of Machinery Supplier was included. Matt Thomas, Haffner’s
Managing Director, said: “Winning an award is always noteworthy but to be the first winner in a new
category is even more special. It means a lot to everyone in the team and it’s a tribute to the years of
hard work and commitment from our Chief Executive Officer, Dave Thomas.”
Haffner is said to have won the award for delivering the world’s first fully seamless window,
something the company says was only possible thanks to its exclusive UK supply partnership with Graf
Synergy. Launched at the FIT Show 2022, the machine demonstrates the next generation in fabrication
automation and sets a new standard for the industry.
The judging panel commented: “The judges were impressed by this supplier’s innovative approach.”
Haffner CEO Dave Thomas concluded: “This is a proud moment for everyone at Haffner. I’d like to thank everyone who’s part of the Haffner team – all
our staff and our partners, especially our PR and marketing expert Jane Ward of Team 4 Marketing, who’s been part of the Haffner story for 20 years. We
are all thrilled.” www.haffnerltd.com
NIDEC MACHINES AIM TO CUT INSPECTION TIME BY 90%
Nidec Machine Tool Corporation has launched Robot Camera SPEED, visual inspection equipment for
cutting tools (hobbing machines) to process gears and other components, and Robot Camera MAX,
visual inspection equipment for broaching machines.
These Robot Cameras use a digital camera to automatically shoot images of cutting tools’ edges at a
high speed and with high accuracy, and save the graphic data of those images.
By entering a tool’s specifications into a Robot Camera, the user can have it determine what images
to shoot of tools of different shapes, and identify any missing part on the edge of a cutting edge and any
detached portion of coating, while judging if any problem exists with a tool’s visual appearance, including
its wear status.
The Robot Cameras are both developed for the automation of Nidec’s cutting tool manufacturing and
regrinding. This improves their quality and can reduce inspection time by 90%.
Both “SPEED” and “MAX” are now available as part of Nidec Machine Tool’s strategy to improve its
cutting tool-related services. Nidec Machine Tool says it is committed to actively working to solving its customer’s problems. www.nidec.com/en
Forklifts
FORKING OUT FOR THE RIGHT ONE
Total Fabricator hears from specialist forklift manufacturer Combilift, who looks at some
options available for fabricators when it comes to lifting, moving and storing materials.
The fabricating sector faces some particular
challenges when it comes to lifting, moving
and storing its products, which tend to be
either long and/or bulky and therefore potentially
problematic to handle.
The limited manoeuvrability of counterbalance
or reach trucks means that they are not always
up to the job of maneuvering these loads around
production or warehousing facilities without
compromising on safety and efficiency.
A further issue is space; transporting a 6m long
stillage of extrusions, for example, with these
conventional forklifts can require wide working
aisles between racking as well as generously
proportioned access doorways.
Multi-directional ability optimises space
As space is one of the most valuable commodities
a company possesses, it’s financially wise to make
the most of it, so any equipment that enables
space optimisation is well worth considering.
As well as cost issues, expanding premises in
times of growth can be disruptive or impossible
due to planning constraints.
Many fabricators therefore gave an enthusiastic
welcome to the emergence of 4-way, or multidirectional
forklifts around 25 years ago, which
were pioneered by companies such as ourselves
at Combilift.
The beauty of multi-directional technology is that
the spaces between racking in storage areas
need only be as wide as the depth of the forklift,
regardless of the length of the load, as this is
carried sideways, resting on the truck platform.
This enables very stable transportation, avoids
tricky maneuvering or risky high level movement
around obstacles, and also gives the driver
clear visibility of the truck, the load and the
surroundings.
The models of the Combilift C-Series have proved
to be a popular choice as they can work in tight
confines, indoors and out in all weathers and
on less than perfect ground conditions. They
are in effect universal handling solutions with
lift capacities from 2.5t upwards with bespoke
lift heights, power options and attachments
according to customer requirements.
Crucially, they can enable a doubling of available
storage space by “improving not moving.”
We have a team of 10 design engineers who work
on our free, no obligation warehouse design &
layout service, providing diagrams showing how
to maximise storage capacity according to the
capabilities of our products.
Stand-on for faster picking
For fabricators or stockholders who do a lot
of picking and where space is at an absolute
premium, it can be worth looking at stand-on
trucks. The narrowed down cab dimensions
make them even niftier in tight spaces and they
also considerably speed up handling and storage
46 T F JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2023 CONNECTING THE WINDOW, DOOR & ROOF FABRICATION SUPPLY CHAIN

A before (image left) and after (right) shot of
how a Combilift forklift can help increase the
amount of products held in a warehouse
procedures – it is quicker and more convenient
for operators to enter and exit the low-level
operator station compared to getting in and out of
an enclosed cab.
Many companies also opt for guide rollers to be
fitted to these models so that they can travel
smoothly and quickly down guided aisles with no
risk of product damage.
Walk your way to safer handling
There are still too many accidents every year
involving forklift trucks in warehouses and
manufacturing facilities, so safety has to be
priority number one for any industry sector.
Pedestrian trucks can be a safer alternative to
ride-on trucks as their operational speed is of
course much slower and they therefore pose less
risk of accidents.
Furthermore, operators at ground level are more
aware of their surroundings compared to when
they are sitting in a cab.
Our range at Combilift includes multi-directional
stackers which can handle long products as well
as palletised loads.
They all feature the company’s patented and
award winning multi-position tiller arm which
enables the operator to work from the safest
position at the side of unit rather than the rear.
It is also quicker and more economical to train
operators to use pedestrian models, which can
be an advantage if you need to employ extra
personnel in busy seasons.
Choose your power
Demand for electric MHE continues to grow in
line with the drive for more sustainability. If you
have always used diesel or LPG power, it is worth
taking a look at new electric models.
Improved battery performance and technology
enables ever increasing lift capacities and longer
run times per charge.
As electric trucks do not have traditional
combustion engines or hydraulic transmissions,
there is no need to check and top up engine
fluids or lubricants, so as well as reducing a
company’s carbon footprint, this also lowers
maintenance costs.
Emission-free and quiet operation is also greatly
appreciated by the workforce.
Combilift says its STE stand-on
truck has enabled Origin to
increase storage capacity of
aluminium extrusions by 30%
Trends
A YEAR OF CHALLENGES
Bonnie Hodson, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at UAP, reflects on the trends that shaped
2022 and what lies ahead during 2023.
In a year that has been dominated by economic
and political upheaval, there have been
inevitable challenges for all businesses.
For manufacturers, supply chain disruption has
also continued as have fluctuating material
costs, creating further bumps in the road. But
against this backdrop, there are also positive
trends which are driving growth in our sector and
creating new opportunities.
Smarter strategies
We operate in a fast-paced market, where
customers’ needs and expectations are constantly
changing. This is accelerating new product
development with a focus on door hardware that
improves security, durability, ease of use and
installation.
One of the biggest drivers of new innovation has
been the shift towards smart technology. The
pandemic, which caused people of all ages to more
actively use online devices, has meant that smart
technology is no longer a nice to have. For many
homeowners, it is expected and part of daily life.
This trend saw more electronic door locks come to
market in 2022, including the IONIC, which is the
first in a series of smart products to be launched
under UAP’s Fullex-ai brand. Although the product
launched at the end of 2022, it follows five years
of extensive research, planning and testing.
This saw us investigate customers’ priorities and
the factors needed to provide the best possible
experience. We learned that security, ease of use,
speed, reliability and flexibility were all essential
for end users.
The result is an ultra-secure electronic lock,
enabling access via a smartphone app, a fob,
push button on the inside, or a thumb turn.
Security is enhanced through face recognition,
Bonnie Hodson
which builds additional authentication into the
app and the fobs have been manufactured in a
way that prevents them from being cloned.
To continue to meet our customers’ changing needs,
UAP has continued to carry out market and customer
research over the past 12 months. This will result in
the launch of several new products in 2023.
Evolving processes
Keeping pace with customer demands also
requires manufacturers’ processes to evolve and
that includes investment in new equipment and
technology. Automation is a crucial element in
this strategy to improve capacity, manufacturing
speeds and quality.
At UAP, we have been working on plans to
integrate more automated technology into our
operations. Our focus is on equipment and
processes that will deliver a better customer
experience both in terms of delivery times and
stock availability.
At the same time, we have to be mindful of our
impact on the environment. The need to improve
sustainability credentials is key for all businesses
and manufacturing is no exception.
In the hardware sector, we must take a more
proactive approach to deliver positive and
tangible change.
The new IONIC lock can
be used via an app
HARDWARE & ACCESSORIES
That is why UAP has launched a new initiative
named S.E.E., which aims to go above and
beyond standard environmental policies and
accreditations such as ISO:14001.
Considering the core pillars required to deliver
sustainability improvements (social, economic,
environmental), S.E.E has been designed to engage
staff at all levels. Each department has also been
tasked with launching a sustainability initiative, led
by a nominated sustainability champion.
As a long-term campaign with clear objectives,
S.E.E. is driving new ideas that will deliver
consistent environmental improvements and
enable our business to share best practice and
knowledge, both internally and externally.
A range of initiatives have been rolled out, including
a competition to encourage our customers to
upcycle crates or pallets, and a project aimed at
introducing new manufacturing equipment that
produces less waste and energy.
Green customers are being identified to partner
with us on new sustainability campaigns, and
we’re working with suppliers in China to audit
products and factories to stop the use of virgin
plastic packaging.
Building resilience
The hurdles of the past year have underlined
the importance of resilience. Managing ongoing
uncertainty is incredibly difficult, so all businesses
must be in a strong position to respond quickly and
effectively to change and challenge.
At UAP, we have strengthened our operations
through an acquisition strategy. This strategically
targets complementary companies that will
bolster our expertise in providing locks and
hardware for doors and windows.
Since 2019, we have acquired two businesses,
and set up two companies overseas.
In 2023, we will be back on the acquisition trail to
secure further growth and provide our customers
with a broader range of high-quality products.
To support our expansion plans, we have also
“The need to improve sustainability credentials
is key for all businesses and manufacturing is no
exception”
restructured our finances this year and repaid our
investors, providing us with more working capital
to achieve our targets.
Of course, it is impossible to grow and strengthen
a business without people, and this has also
led to new initiatives designed to support and
develop staff.
Our growth share scheme means that every UAP
employee now owns a share of the business and
benefits from its future success.
These shares are earned and can’t be purchased,
with 20% of the UAP share fund now owned by
our employees.
In 2022, we also embedded the UAP Training
Academy, which is now integral to the way we
operate as a company.
The evolving initiative combines multiple tools to
deliver its objectives, providing employees with
both job specific training as well as the chance to
learn softer skills.
As all staff returned to office-based working,
another key development in 2022 was the launch
of our free doggy day care service. Located on site
in our Whitefield office, the facility has encouraged
our people to transition away from remote working
while improving staff morale.
Unlocking potential
Over the past year, one of the key lessons learned
is that economic and political challenges should
not be seen as a barrier to growth.
As we look ahead to this year, these challenges
are unlikely to change, so we can’t stand still.
Ongoing research, development and investment
will ensure that our products, manufacturing
processes and people can keep up with the pace
of change and are fit for the future.
Smart Handles
HARDWARE & ACCESSORIES
The smart security sector seems to be of everincreasing
popularity to the homeowner and
end-user, with the ability to lock, unlock and
open the door in alternative ways to ‘traditional’
methods catching the imagination and fitting better
with people’s busy lives and changing expectations.
It is due to these factors that ERA says it has
‘revolutionised the expectations and capabilities
of keyless entry’ with the launch of its door
security solution, TouchKey.
TouchKey combines a smarter security door
handle, an auto-firing multi-point lock, and an
anti-bump security cylinder.
It is installed during the fabrication stage on
composite or timber entrance doors, and the
technology provides multi-factor authentication
for residential door access. ERA says it is the only
system of its kind to combine five different entry
methods into a single door handle.
This includes fingerprint access, geolocation
technology, by app voice-activated entry, or via
the Smart Home app, but still offers the ability to
be opened by manual key override if required.
The new product, which we got to see up close at
the launch event, features fingerprint technology
which allows up to 50 different fingerprints to be
stored directly within the handle to provide users
with instant access to the property.
And when used with the ERA Smart Home app,
TouchKey can be unlocked with a single touch locally
or remotely via the addition of an ERA alarm hub.
As ERA points out, having all this data
implemented within the product also requires
consideration, with a GDPR compliant platform
hosted on a UK ERA-owned data server to stop
hackers gaining access to personal information.
A SMART ADDITION
George Lewis recently attended the launch of TouchKey, ERA’s new smart door security
solution. We hear what the company has done to make the product stand out in an evergrowing
market sector…
The TouchKey smart home security door handle
ERA says the smart lock’s battery life is between
6-8 months, on the basis of ten openings per day.
But to allay any fear of the door remaining open
when the battery runs low or stops, prior warning
will be given for the homeowner to change the
battery, and if the battery still isn’t changed, the
lock goes into a ‘fail-safe’ mode.
Digital e-keys with ‘timed access’, or live for a
certain amount of time, can also be assigned to
individuals, such as family and friends, via the
app. Voice command can be operated via the app
to unlock the door on approach, without having to
physically touch a smartphone.
With the geolocation technology, the system can
remotely unlock via Bluetooth once a designated
individual is within range of the property.
And for the traditional folk amongst us, the
TouchKey also contains a hidden manual key
override, with three keys supplied as standard.
ERA says that TouchKey has been manufactured due
to demand from both fabricators and homeowners.
Helen Downer, President of Tyman UK & Ireland,
ERA’s parent company, explained: “TouchKey
provides fabricators with the next generation in
smarter door security, and because it integrates with
the wider ERA Protect smart ecosystem, it presents
door manufacturers with cross-selling opportunities,
whilst providing additional security for customers.”
As an extra selling point, ERA says TouchKey is
one of the first systems of its kind to achieve a
new BSI Standard.
TouchKey has been independently tested to BSI’s
new Smart Residential Locking Device standard,
which was developed in conjunction with ERA
and combines the BSI Internet of Things (IoT)
Kitemark with TS 621 for mechanical security
with smart locking.
From a design point of view, the mechanical
hardware includes a two hook multi-point lock
with a central deadbolt that fires six locking
points when engaged to automatically secure the
door on closing.
And the anti-bump security cylinder works
in conjunction with the TouchKey smarter
handle and TouchKey multi-point lock, whilst
simultaneously providing resistance against
forced entry.
The smarter handle is also built for strong security,
with the addition of a forged steel backplate and
hardened plates that prevent potential attackers
from removing the handle to access the lock.
And finally, to further impress the homeowner,
ERA says TouchKey is the first of its products to
feature 100% sustainable packaging.
SLIM THINKING FOR 2023 WITH OMEGA LETTERPLATE
Hardware manufacturer VBH is reporting a high uptake of the new greenteQ SLIM Omega letterplate.
The product has been introduced following feedback from VBH customers who were struggling to find a
feature-packed letterplate that they could fit to slim mid-rails without it overhanging the profile.
The new letterplate opens to 180° in the same way that the standard Omega product does, but is only
56mm deep. Despite the slim overall size, the internal aperture is only, at 31mm, 8mm less than a standard
letterplate. VBH advises that this will cope with most standard postal items. Omega SLIM is available in nine
finishes of the greenteQ Suite, VBH’s range of matching resi-door, window and patio door furniture. Marketing
Manager Gary Gleeson said: “We re-vamped the Omega range in 2022, giving it a much more contemporary
look. We had been hearing for a while that people wanted our original ‘box’ but in a slimmer package, so it
seemed the perfect time to lay down the tooling and put some stock in place of the all-new Omega SLIM.” www.vbhgb.com
TOUCHKEY RECEIVES SBD ACCREDITATION
ERA has been awarded the Secured by Design (SBD) Secure Connected Device accreditation for its new door
security solution, TouchKey.
TouchKey is now listed by SBD as a Police Preferred Specification product after meeting the necessary recognised
security standards. The accreditation forms part of SBD’s certification scheme on behalf of the UK Police Service to help
consumers make better-informed choices when buying connectable devices and help keep them safe from crime.
Ben Penson, Technical, Innovation and Development Director at ERA, said: “TouchKey presents the next generation
in smarter door security. It was therefore crucial that the product was certified to the highest possible standard to
provide door manufacturers and their customers with complete peace of mind and confidence in its capabilities.”
AT PRECISION MOVES TO NEW PETERLEE FACTORY
Bi-fold hardware supplier AT Precision has moved to a new, 120,000 square foot factory, significantly
increasing capacity and ramping up production.
The new facility in Peterlee now houses 40,000 square feet for manufacturing, and 80,000 square feet for
storage, meaning not only is there much more room for fabrication, but a significantly increased space for keeping
finished products, ready for distribution.
Sales Director Michael Hewitt said: “The new year has been the perfect time to relocate to a much bigger
site, and has allowed us to ramp up both production capacity and manufacturing speed, enabling us to meet a
constantly growing customer demand. With an additional 80,000 square feet of storage space, we’re able to keep
even more products in stock, ensuring our customers can get the products they need, when they need them.” www.atprecision.co.uk
BRITON ENHANCED DOOR CLOSERS A HIT
Briton has launched its newly enhanced 2000 door closer series, adding augmented versions of its 2003 and
2003V overhead door closers to its UK portfolio.
Briton says the 2000 series, designed for surface mount application and celebrated for its renowned reliability and
performance, offers an authentic one-box solution for timber and uninsulated metal doors, and is ideal for first time or
retrofit functions in a host of domestic and public settings. To meet the developing requirements of customers, Briton is
building upon the design of the 2003 and 2003V, optimising both closers for seamless adjustment and installation, with
self-adhesive Accufit templates in all mounting positions designed to assist in quick and accurate fittings.
Sue Corrick, Product Marketing Manager at Allegion UK, said: “Trusted performance, reliability and durability is what our customers know us for, and
since its launch, the 2000 series has always epitomised that long-standing heritage. With the enhanced 2003 and 2003V, we’re now improving the
installation process even further, helping ensure our product functions efficiently and effectively when it matters, for years to come.” www.briton.co.uk
door hardware offering, and create a wider selection for its customers in the UK market.
The top model is of a design based on the proven Roto modular principle and can be integrated into almost all
UK profile systems. Tyson Anderson, Titon’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “Given the continued interest
in aluminium windows and doors throughout the commercial and domestic markets alike, customers are looking for high quality and technically sound
hardware products and the Roto AL Designo range perfectly addresses this need. Not only that, we now have access to the full range of Roto products which
EVEREST FIT YALE PLATINUM CYLINDER AS STANDARD
Yale has announced that its long-standing partner, Everest, is now fitting the Platinum 3-star
cylinder on all its doors as standard.
Anthony Threlfall, Head of Marketing at Everest, said: “Before deciding on Yale’s Platinum 3-star cylinder
we benchmarked the market in an evaluation and independent test program and Yale came out on top.”
The Yale Platinum 3 Star has been designed, developed, and tested to Yale’s exacting standards to
2022 WAS A VINTAGE YEAR FOR VBH
Hardware manufacturer VBH has said that 2022 was a great success for the company.
The company celebrated its 40th year in business with a dinner and dance at Leeds Castle in May,
and once again co-hosted the customer golf day in the summer with Deceuninck.
In terms of product development, VBH saw a steady stream of new products hit the market,
including a slim Omega letterplate, a complete re-design of the standard Omega range, new finishes
being added to the greenteQ Suite of matching door and window furniture, and new window and
door restrictors, among others. VBH also made its first forays into the world of sports sponsorship
by providing a full kit for one of Clyde FC’s community teams, sponsoring Gillingham FC’s match
against Sheffield Wednesday, and had greenteQ Q-Smart branding on the Vauxhall Astras throughout
the 2022 British Touring Car Championship.
2022 was a year of internal promotions, with many members of the team progressing to new
positions of greater responsibility within the company.
Towards the end of the year, VBH said it was proud to be judged Large Business of the Year at the
Medway Business Awards, and was voted Hardware Company of the Year in the National Fenestration
Awards. The company’s product range and the efforts of the expanded team is said to have helped VBH to another record year for sales in 2022, despite the
well-documented issues that businesses and individuals are facing in these uncertain times.
And despite challenges, VBH’s On Time in Full delivery score remained in the 96 – 98% bracket for the full year, which the company says was thanks to its
purchasing and logistics strategies.
New products and initiatives are due to be launched in the coming months, coupled with evolving service practices, and VBH is certain that it will build on
the success of 2022 in 2023, and says it will continue to offer top levels of service to its customers, both existing and new. www.vbhgb.com
Glass Recycling
A SMASHING INITIATIVE
Fabricators can make big savings on waste disposal costs while at the same time raising
money to support environmental and social initiatives in a glass recycling scheme set up
by Morley Glass. MD Ian Short explains how it works...
Cost-cutting has not been easy for any
business in recent years given the global
issues that are fuelling inflation and
impacting all areas of the economy.
Managing Director of
Morley Glass Ian Short
But if you are a window and door fabricator, or
an installer paying for someone to collect and
dispose of your post-consumer glass that you
have removed as part of window replacement
jobs, you could be in a position to make
significant savings.
An opportunity
Back in 2019 we looked closely at the costs for
disposing of our waste materials – mainly glass,
metals, cardboard, timber and plastic packaging
– and saw an opportunity.
We’d already started to divert anything that could
be re-used, such as the wooden boxes that our
blind systems are supplied in, to local charities
and schools, and good processes for recycling
materials like cardboard were already used.
But one material stood out – glass.
Despite being an easy material to recycle, all too
often glass removed during window replacements
is simply thrown into the general waste skip.
This means recyclable glass usually ends up
in landfill, which is not only environmentally
problematic – it is also becoming incredibly
expensive.
Fuel prices, the end of the red diesel concession
for the waste sector and higher landfill tax rates
have all hit to make waste disposal costs higher
than ever.
So being able to recycle – particularly when
it costs nothing – makes good business and
“Despite being an easy material to recycle,
all too often glass removed during window
replacements is simply thrown into the general
waste skip”
environmental sense.
Collected and recycled for free
That’s why we have installed machinery at our
Leeds HQ which is a first stage post-consumer
glass recycling plant.
This means we are uniquely placed to take waste
glass from fabricators and installers, regardless
of whether they are a Morley Glass integral blinds
customer or not, and divert this into the production
of new glass.
Our message is simple; please don’t skip your
waste glass – we need it!
We will collect it from you at no cost providing
your location is within access of our vehicle
delivery fleet and that we have the capacity to
take it.
We can’t promise to take it away in every case
but please get in touch if you are interested. We
can do this thanks to the support of Saint-Gobain
Glass and our shared sustainability vision.
GLASS PROCESSING & SEALED UNITS
Morley’s glass crushing
machine in Leeds
How it works
Morley Glass delivery drivers collect waste glass
from fabricators and installers as they deliver
Uni-Blinds to customers throughout the UK.
On their return to Leeds, the glass is unloaded
and fed into a glass crushing machine which
creates glass cullet.
“Our message is simple, please don’t skip your
waste glass – we need it! We will collect it from
you at no cost providing your location is within
access of our vehicle delivery fleet and that we
have the capacity to take it”
This is bagged and collected by Saint-Gobain
Glass for use as a raw material in new glass
manufacture.
Cullet is valuable because it reduces the demand
for virgin raw materials in glass making, and
using cullet in place of silica means less energy is
needed in the manufacturing process.
All this means that Morley Glass is paid for every
tonne of glass cullet generated.
The great thing about the revenue raised by this
recycling scheme is that it all goes into a fund
called GreenVision to support local charities,
groups and individuals who are dedicated to
environmental or social improvement.
In just over two years, the total value of this fund
has reached £60,000 as a result of the 1,000
tonnes of waste glass we have collected and
processed to date.
Far-reaching environmental benefits
In addition to supporting a diverse range of
micro-initiatives, there is a bigger environmental
benefit with glass recycling.
Ever since we started recycling glass, we have
tracked the volumes collected and crushed for
cullet which has enabled us to calculate the raw
material, energy and CO 2 savings achieved.
The data shows that in two years, the amount
of glass cullet we have produced is equivalent
to the weight of 150 elephants, saving around
325,000kg of CO 2 , as every tonne of glass cullet
prevents 300kg going into the atmosphere.
Over 920,000kg of sand, the main raw material
for glass, has also been saved and the overall
energy saving is calculated at 541 ‘energy
years’ – that is the amount of energy used by an
average UK household in 12 months.
So, if you would like Morley Glass to collect your
waste glass to help save resources, cut CO 2
and support environmental and social initiatives
please get in touch.
SAINT-GOBAIN GLASS BAGS TWO G22 AWARDS
Saint-Gobain Glass was named Glass Company of the Year and saw one of its key employees win
the Unsung Hero category at the G22 Awards.
The company was recognised as the Glass Company of the Year for its commitment and investment
in the industry. Last year it invested more than £30 million in its site in Eggborough, which included the
installation of a new float glass furnace, and refurbishment and redevelopment of associated areas of
its factory. Production Specialist Will Ruane was also named the winner in the Unsung Hero category. He
joined the company as an intern in finance department, took an interest in glass production and is now
on a development and training programme to achieve a senior management role in Float Glass manufacturing. He also played a vital role in the project to
install the new furnace. Steve Severs MD at Saint-Gobain Glass said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the whole team and hugely rewarding for Will.
“The G22 Award comes immediately after winning two awards in the Glass Focus Awards where our project The Spark was awarded Design of the Year –
Flat Glass, and we also won the Strengthening business through people award.” www.saint-gobain-glass.com
CUSTOM MIXING THE KEY FOR QUANEX
Sarah
Quanex has bought the assets of LMI Custom Mixing – a custom polymer mixer that produces
rubber compounds.
Going forward, it will do business as Quanex Custom Mixing. The business has been a key Quanex
supplier for twenty years – which made the acquisition a logical development, as Edgetech MD
Chris Alderson explained:“LMI is a perfect fit for Quanex, not least because they were a long-term
supplier already, and had previously been part of a group with Edgetech in the past. The acquisition
significantly enhances Quanex’s existing expertise in materials science and process engineering, and
allows us to further expand our product offering. What’s more, given that Edgetech US and LMI are
based in the same location in Ohio, it will allow for a seamless integration.” www.edgetechig.co.uk
A SMASHING INITIATIVE FROM MORLEY GLASS
Morley Glass says it has saved over 1,000 tonnes of post-consumer glass from going to
landfill in just two years, and instead diverted it into the production of new glass in a scheme
that has provided funding of more than £60,000 for environmental and community schemes in
West Yorkshire.
In 2020, the company invested in reducing its process waste and providing a post-consumer glass
recycling service to fabricators and installers by commissioning machinery that could crush waste
glass into what is known as cullet.
The company says this can be fed directly into the manufacture of new glass which not only reduces
needless landfill waste, but also cuts the volumes of virgin raw materials needed to make glass, and
saves energy as turning cullet into new glass requires less energy. You can read more about this scheme on page 54. www.morleyglass.co.uk
TUFFX GLASS UP TO THE CHALLENGE
‘Sleek, contemporary design, bold geometric architecture and a mixture of modern and traditional
build materials’ were said to be the key components of a residential property in Exeter which was
recently completed with specialist glass from TuffX.
TuffX supplied a total of 10m 2 21.5mm toughened and laminated glass for the prominent first-floor
balustrade, made up of six rectangular units each 1205mm in height. The finished build is a complementary
mix of both modern textures and traditional materials, which have turned a home into a design show piece,
while the completed glass balustrade creates a practical, safe and secure outdoor space for the occupants
to enjoy. TuffX’s Commercial Director Paul Higgins said: “It’s always a huge pleasure to see our products take
pride of place in such impressive architectural designs.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk
