Therefore, the good deeds of God’s people will include
prayers for the healing of the sick and for God to stay his
hand and turn back the pandemic, and that he would provide
a cure. We pray about the coronavirus, and we work
to alleviate its suffering the way Abraham Lincoln prayed
for the end of the Civil War, and worked to end it, even
though he saw it as a judgment from God:
Fondly do we hope—fervently do we pray—that this
mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God
wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the
bond-man’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil
shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the
lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was
said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the
judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.”
God has his work to do—much of it secret. We have
ours. If we trust him and obey his word, he will cause his
sovereignty and our service to accomplish his wise and
good purposes.
