Another thing I should say before I try to answer the question,
What is God doing? is that he is always doing a billion
things we do not know:
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,

I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are more than can be told. (Ps. 40:5)
Not only are his designs in the coronavirus beyond counting;
they are, in many ways, inscrutable. “Oh, the depth
of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How
unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his
ways!” (Rom. 11:33). But when Paul wrote that, he was not
saying, “So close your Bible and make up your own reality.”
On the contrary, those words about God’s inscrutable
ways were written as a climax to eleven chapters of the
greatest news in the world, all of which are written to be
