We’re looking forward to being back at Ashton 

Gate for the first home game of the New Year. 

We’re focused on delivering a performance for 

the fans against a tough opponent. We saw 

during the fixture in Perpignan the threat that 

they pose, and we know we’ll have to be at our 

best on Friday night. 

“Getting five points away in Zebre was 

pleasing – the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi is a 

tough place to play - but we know there is a lot 

to improve on, particularly after the first half. 

When we improved our discipline and control, 

we were able to apply pressure and run in 34 

second-half points, so we need to build on 

that. 

“It was also great to welcome back Harry 

Randall and Siva Naulago from long-term 

injury. Both have worked incredibly hard to get 

back to full fitness and we’re pleased to have 

the pair of them available again

EPCR WELCOME 

A warm welcome to this Round 3/Round 4 match in the 

2022/23 EPCR Challenge Cup and a Happy New Year to all as 

we reach the business end of the tournament’s pool stage. 

Following the historic introduction of the South African clubs 

into EPCR’s competitions, it comes as no surprise that the 

Emirates Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs have already made 

an impact and both remain in contention to book coveted 

places in the knockout stage. 

With the top six clubs in each pool guaranteed qualification, 

there’s an important incentive in that the four highestranked 

clubs in each pool will earn home matches in the 

Round of 16. In addition, the clubs which finish ninth and 10th 

in each Heineken Champions Cup pool will qualify for the 

Round of 16 of the EPCR Challenge Cup. 

So, after what promises to be more compelling action this 

month, we’ll have a clearer idea of the pathway to the 

eagerly-anticipated Finals weekend at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium 

on 19 and 20 May for which nearly 70,000 tickets have 

already been sold. 

We are delighted to be joined on the journey to Dublin by 

our official partners, DHL, IHG and Tissot, by our official 

supporters, Gilbert and Kappa, and also by our official airline 

partner in South Africa, Qatar Airways. 

Our long-standing broadcast partners, BT Sport, beIN SPORTS

AboutSt Mungo’s 

St Mungo’s is a leading homelessness charity 

with national influence. In Bristol, we run 18 

services across the whole city, supporting people 

at every stage of homelessness. 

We work with people to prevent them becoming 

homeless in the first place. Our Outreach team is 

out day and night supporting people who are on the 

streets of Bristol. Last winter our Outreach team 

helped more than 500 people who were sleeping 

rough in the city. 

We also provide specialist emergency 

accommodation to help people get back on their 

feet, and longer-term homes for people who are 

ready to live a more independent life. 

Everyone’s situation is different; we offer expert 

person-centred support to find the right solution for 

each individual. We help people to find a new place to 

live or keep their current home. We help them manage 

their finances and access mental health support. 

Our role doesn’t end once we support someone into a 

home. At Bristol Recovery College our specialist tutors 

offer accredited courses in English, Maths, Digital Skills 

and Wellbeing. And our Progression Coaches work 

closely with students to help them find a job. Students 

at our Putting Down Roots gardening programme 

learn horticultural skills as they work as a team on our 

garden in city centre Castle Park. 

St Mungo’s ambition is to end rough sleeping in this 

country and we believe that policies and interventions 

can be put in place to end all forms of homelessness,

Academy trio Sam Worsley, Jimmy Halliwell and Joe Jenkins have been named in Alan Dickens’ 

32-man England U20 Elite Player Squad for the 2023 campaign, ahead of the Under-20 Six 

Nations starting next month. 

Fly-half Worsley, prop Halliwell and centre Jenkins – who made his Gallagher Premiership debut against 

Saracens in November – will now all prepare for a Six Nations opener against Scotland on Friday, 3 

February (KO 19:00 GMT) at Twickenham Stoop. 

To continue preparations ahead of the opening fixture, the men’s U20 squad will convene for camp at 

Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre on Wednesday 11 January, which will include two trial matches 

against Oxford University (K.O. 15:00 Saturday, 14 January) and Loughborough University (K.O. 13:00 

Saturday, 21 January). 

In addition to the Six Nations, England men’s U20 also will compete in the World Rugby Under-20 

Championship this upcoming summer. 

England’s player pathway programme is a vital development tool for future international rugby; of the 48 

players capped for England last year, 42 of them played England U20. 


Bears U18s News 

Bristol Bears denied at the death away against Saracens at the StoneX as Academy League action returned 

on Sunday. 

The Cubs were the first to score through Joe Cooper off the back of a rolling maul, Eamon Rogers converted. 

With five minutes to go until half-time, Toby Clinch dotted down in the corner for Saracen and Benjy Mills converted. 

Everything was level at the break. The Bears looked to build off the back of a fast and furious restart from Isaac 

Campbell-Wu, but handling errors cost the cubs. 

In the final quarter of the match the Bears were building in Saracens’ half. Louis Trevett looked to have scored but 

was denied by the referee. 

Saracens had a player sent to the bin with five minutes to go. They were let off the hook though when a late Mills 

penalty handed the home side the win. 

The Cubs next face London Irish at home at Shaftesbury Park on Saturday, January 21st.

HITZ is Premiership Rugby’s award-winning employability and education programme, with Central YMCA as the 

official education provider. 

We will work with you to find out what you’re interested in and where you want to get to. Then we’ll help you get 

there, supporting you every step of the way in an environment that is different from school and where staff will 

treat you with respect. 

HITZ uses rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship to support you to 

change your life and change your future. 

We are based at Lockleaze Sports Centre where we offer the opportunity to gain a Level 1 Employability Skills 

qualification alongside functional skills qualifications in maths & English 

What are the highlights of the programme this year… 

The programme is sponsored nationally by CVC and Wooden Spoon, and locally by Molson Group. Molson’s 

supportive approach has led to multiple opportunities for HITZ students to gain work-experience allowing an 

insight into a workplace and potential apprenticeship opportunities. As a result, there are four former HITZ 

students who are now on apprenticeships with Molson

Moving forward our coaches will continue to be able to gain knowledge from the Bears coaches and our players 

will be able to get closer to Bristol Bears action, both Men and Womens teams, with Super Sundays and Player
