South East - Karen Maclean The temperature in the South has finally dropped, man & beast will be glad! Despite the extreme heat our animals have coped relatively well by finding that little bit of breeze or shade where they can. Agricultural shows have returned and luckily most have kept the Charolais Classes, cattle numbers have been lower this year although quality has remained. Wissington Rowena was Champion Charolais at South of England and new members to the South East Area Rob Tremayne & Nichola Osgood were reserve with their yearling heifer Marne Sweetpea (Welcome to the SECA Rob & Nichola). Darren & Donna Knox won Junior Interbreed Champion with Drumshane Scania. Mortimers Margarita New Forest Show – Champion & Supreme was won by 6 year old cow Mortimers Margarita, Reserve Champion – 2 year old heifer Goscombe Rainbow. Nick Jones & Sarah Jackson stayed an extra day for the Continental classes with excellent results for the Charolais Breed. Rob & Nichola took Supreme Champion at Chertsey Show with Marne Sweetpea. Mortimers Margarita Charolais Champion/ Champion Female & Reserve overall at Edenbridge with Marne Sweetpea being reserve Charolais. We will be holding a herd competition later on this month, please contact any committee members for further details. Marne Sweetpea Our Calf show will once again be held at Ardingly on the 24th November, sponsorship enquiries welcome. The club have continued to hold a few quizzes over zoom which have been good fun, our next one is on Thursday 13 October at 19.30 – if anyone would like to join in please do get in touch. Wales Eva Jones Shwmae pawb! It is lovely to get the chance to write a “normal” spring/ summer article after the last few years, complete with show and sale updates from across the Wales. We start with the end of April bull sales in Welshpool, which saw not only a fine trade to average over 5600gns but also a fantastic 100% clearance. Judge for the day from just a few miles away was Thomas Corbett of the Teme herd, who picked Graiggoch Samuel from G Jones, Clwyd as his champion. A Goldstar Gentleman son, he sold away at 7800gns to TT Jones & Co from Llanbrynmair. Top price of the day went to Teme Skyfall from the Corbett family of Knighton, Powys with a price of 9000gns, with reserve overall champion Maerdy Slater coming in next at Pre-sale champion Graiggoch Samuel Judging underway at Welshpool bull sale 8500gns from DE Evans, Mold. It certainly was a good day for Welsh breeders with Roberts & Jones of Welshpool seeing both their Montgomery Rolly and Montgomery Rowan away at 7000gns, while Graiggoch Regent, Maerdy Solomon, Teme Skyblue and Montgomery Romeo all reached in excess of the 6000gns mark. A successful sale day for all, let’s hope this is a sign of the demand for Charolais bulls in the commercial market. Long may it continue! Next came the best (and hottest!) week of the year as the Royal Welsh Show returned for the first time since 2019. With TB regulations changing in 4 year testing areas, we did see a fall in entry numbers, but an excellent standard of cattle nonetheless and a great show of support from the Welsh region. Supreme Champion went to the three year old heifer Dooley Paradise from Charlotte Boden, a Barnsford Ferny daughter. Reserve overall champion came from the same class, with the Corbett family’s second placed Teme Poshtotty and her heifer calf at foot following Paradise all the way. In the female section as a whole there was a great show from Welsh breeders, with red rosettes going to SL & LJ Evans for Breos Nel and the Corbett family for Teme Selfie and Teme Snowwhite, the last of whom went on to win not only breed junior champion but also triumphed in the interbreed junior heifer championship. Male Champion went to 13 month old Teme Sam, with Arwel Owen’s Trefaldwyn Slade standing reserve. Charolais pair were Teme Snowwhite and Stablemate. Teme Stardust, who went on to win interbreed Female of the Future pairs; a fantastic achievement. Congratulations and thanks go to all the exhibitors and supporters, especially in such extreme weather conditions, without whom the show would not be what it is. I’m sure I speak for many of us in saying what a great feeling it was to not only get back in the show ring, but also to catch up with old friends and new after such a long break. With this article going to print the end of August, the remaining summer shows will be covered in the next edition. Until then, on with the return to normality and the great British summer!
