An Ayrshire derby for a place in a cup <strong>final</strong>. The stakes<br />
could hardly have been higher and <strong>Kilmarnock</strong>’s<br />
patience was eventually rewarded as they beat their<br />
First Division opponents in front of 25,057 fans at the<br />
National Stadium. Ayr defended doggedly and Kevin<br />
Cuthbert pulled off a number of fine saves for Brian<br />
Reid’s men but Dean Shiels <strong>final</strong>ly broke the deadlock 11<br />
minutes from the end of extra time. It was a memorable<br />
afternoon for Killie and there was even better to come<br />
when they stunned <strong>Celtic</strong> in the <strong>final</strong> two months later.<br />
