SCENE SETTER
We meet again. Celtic and Kilmarnock went
ago – with the Hoops winning 2-0 – and part
two is under the Hampden floodlights.
VIAPLAY CUP SEMI-FINAL
CELTIC v
KILMARNOCK
A
t stake is a place in the Viaplay Cup
final on Sunday February 26 against
either Rangers or Aberdeen – who
meet in the second semi-final tomorrow,
kick-off 3.00pm. This is the 77th season of the
competition and Celtic are the favourites to
reach the final for the 36th time while their
opponents from Ayrshire are seeking a seventh
appearance in the showpiece.
Ange Postecoglou’s men are the current
holders, having beaten St Johnstone by a
single James Forrest goal in last season’s
semi-final before going on to defeat Hibernian
2-1 in the decider. Celtic have won six of the
last eight League Cups – only Ross County
(twice) have beaten them in that period.
The Hoops are the reigning cinch Premiership
champions and have suffered only one
defeat in domestic football all season – a
2-0 loss at St Mirren on September 18. They
began 2023 with a 2-2 draw in the New
Year derby at Ibrox to remain nine points
clear at the top. Postecoglou’s side booked
their semi-final berth with emphatic
wins at Ross County and Motherwell.
Kyogo Furuhashi is Celtic’s top scorer with 16
goals in all competitions but they have abundant
attacking options, including Liel Abada, Jota,
Daizen Maeda, Giorgios Giakoumakis and
League Cup specialist Forrest. The Parkhead
boss has recently added to his talented
squad – Canada full-back Alistair Johnston
made his debut at Ibrox while J-League
Player of the Year Tomoki Iwata, who can
play in defence or midfield, has arrived from
Yokohama F Marinos. The Japanese market
has also yielded Yuki Kobayashi – a central
defender previously with Vissel Kobe.
Derek McInnes has also bolstered his squad
since the window opened, with former
Peterborough and Rotherham striker Kyle
Vassell putting pen to paper after a spell in
the United States with San Diego Loyal. Danny
Armstrong and Oli Shaw have scored the bulk
of Killie’s goals in this season’s competition and
they are boosted by the return of Kyle Lafferty.
Killie’s first game in the Viaplay Cup was
at Fraserburgh back in July – they came
through their group then knocked out
Hearts at Tynecastle before a Rugby Park
victory over Dundee United ended their
long wait for a return to Hampden Park.
This is the club’s first appearance at this
stage since beating rivals Ayr United on
the way to winning the trophy in 2011/12.
Last season was the only one in 30 years that
Kilmarnock were not in the top flight and there
was much work to do when McInnes took
charge on January 4, 2022 but the experienced
gaffer secured the title with a dramatic win over
Arbroath in the penultimate game. Kilmarnock
have been strong at home this term – five wins,
three draws and two defeats – and will surely
improve on their current ninth position if they
can pick up more points on their travels.
McInnes was a Hampden regular during his
time as Aberdeen boss when semi-finals and
finals became the norm but it was at Celtic Park
when he ended the Dons’ 19-wait for silverware
with victory over Inverness CT. It would be
quite an achievement if he could go on and
repeat the feat with the Ayrshire club, who
famously got their hands on the iconic trophy
in March 2012 when a late goal from substitute
Dieter Van Tornhout defeated Celtic 1-0.
This is only the second time the clubs
have crossed paths at this stage of the
League Cup. It was Celtic who prevailed
on a cold February evening in 2000 when
Lubo Moravcik got the only goal for Kenny
Dalglish’s side just a week after the shock of
the Scottish Cup defeat to Caley Thistle.
Celtic are in a very different place now
and will be backed by a huge support this
evening. They are expected to win, but in
football you just never know. The winners,
and the losers, won’t have much time to
dwell on the outcome – on Wednesday night
it’s back to league business as Celtic host
St Mirren and Kilmarnock face Rangers.
VIAPLAY CUP SECOND ROUND
1-4
Celtic began their defence of the trophy
with a comfortable win in Dingwall, just
three days after putting an incredible nine
goals past Dundee United at Tannadice.
Ange Postecoglou rang the changes and saw
his side net four times against the Staggies.
The Hoops twice struck the woodwork
before skipper Callum McGregor opened
the scoring from a David Turnbull corner
midway through the first half. Giorgos
Giakoumakis quickly added the second goal
with a low shot from just inside the box.
Alex Iacovitti gave Malky Mackay’s men
hope with a close-range header after 68
minutes but Daizen Maeda pounced to net
a rebound five minutes later. Substitute
James Forrest grabbed a late fourth goal
following an assist from Anthony Ralston.
VIAPLAY CUP QUARTER-FINAL
0-4
Celtic went into this one having scored
six against Hibernian at the weekend,
and their attacking threat was again
evident in the early kick-off at Fir Park.
The visitors went close on a number
of occasions – including a long-range
effort from Kyogo Furuhashi that hit
the underside of the bar – before Liel
Abada tapped in the opener from a Greg
Taylor cross just before the break. The
Israeli winger struck again with a smart
first-time finish in 56 minutes then Reo
Hatate claimed the third from close
range following a brilliant piece of skill.
Abada almost completed his hat-trick
with 15 minutes remaining but his
shot bounced off the post and Kyogo
converted the rebound.
KILMARNOCK’S ROAD
TO THE SEMI-FINALS
Kilmarnock’s Viaplay Cup campaign began in
Fraserburgh back on July 9 and victories over Hearts
and Dundee United in the knock-out stages have
earned them a semi-final place…
GROUP STAGE
Kilmarnock qualified for the last 16
as one of the three best runners-up
after picking up 10 points in Group
B, which was topped by Partick
Thistle. Killie kicked off with a long
haul north to face Highland League
champions Fraserburgh and ran
out 3-1 winners thanks to goals
from Oli Shaw, Fraser Murray and
Kyle Lafferty. Next up was a home
game against Partick Thistle that
finished 1-1. Liam Donnelly’s early
opener was cancelled out by Aaron
Muirhead and the Jags picked up
the bonus point with a 5-4 win in
the shoot-out. Kilmarnock defeated
Montrose 3-0 at Links Park on
matchday three, with Kerr McInroy,
Daniel Armstrong and Shaw on
target. The Ayrshire club sealed a
knock-out place courtesy of a 4-1
victory over Stenhousemuir at the
BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park. Liam
Polworth scored early on, Shaw
bagged a double and Armstrong
was also on the mark.
VIAPLAY CUP SECOND ROUND
0-1
Tynecastle had been a happy
hunting ground for Kilmarnock in
recent years and that was the case
once again as they notched up a
fifth straight away win over Hearts.
One goal was enough to settle
the game in Killie’s favour and it
came midway through the first
half when Innes Cameron got on
the end of a Liam Polworth cross
and sent a header beyond Craig
Gordon. Hearts pressed for an
equaliser but Derek McInnes’ men
defended well to secure another
memorable result in the capital.
TUESDAY OCTOBER 18
VIAPLAY CUP QUARTER-FINAL
2-1
Kilmarnock had drawn with
Dundee United on the opening
day of the cinch Premiership
season but went one better
to reach their first League
Cup semi-final for 11 years.
In a frantic start to the match,
Kyle Lafferty gave Killie the
lead from the spot in eight
minutes after Liam Smith was
penalised for handball but Glenn
Middleton equalised with a fine
finish two minutes later. There
was never much between the
teams but Daniel Armstrong
proved to be the home hero,
heading in a Jordan Jones cross
with 17 minutes remaining to
send Killie to Hampden.
he Hoops defeated
Hibernian 2-1 in last
season’s decider and
scored four times against
both Ross County and Motherwell
to reach this evening’s semi-final
against a Kilmarnock side who are
appearing at this stage for the first
time since lifting the cup in 2012.
Celtic won 2-0 when the sides
met in the cinch Premiership a
week ago but Postecoglou isn’t
reading too much into that game
and expects a tough contest
against Derek McInnes’side.
He said: “The semi-final of any cup
competition is always a bit different
to a league game – everyone
knows what’s at stake. You are on
the doorstep of getting to a cup
final and playing for a trophy. Last
year against St Johnstone in the
semi-final it was a very tight game.
There is an edge to these games
and I would expect Kilmarnock to
be a little bit more aggressive in
their approach (than last week).
“Rarely do one side dominate these
games and they can be cagey
affairs until maybe a goal goes in
and the game opens up. We will
do our work to prepare for the
opposition and also make sure
we play our football on the day.
“It was a great experience for us last
year. It was an important trophy
for us to win with a new team and
accelerate some of our growth.
In the final, Hibs scored first and
we had to really work hard to hit
back quickly and we did that with
two great goals from Kyogo.
“Hampden is a venue I like – you
know you are going there for a
special occasion and you have
supporters of both sides giving it
great colour and atmosphere so
we are looking forward to it. Your
enjoyment sometimes depends
on the outcome and we had a
couple of really nice experiences
there last season and obviously
one not so nice (against Rangers
in the Scottish Cup semi-final).
“The last one was a disappointing
day for us because we were in
really good form leading into it
and after it – it was a pretty tight
game and we lost in extra time.
When you get so close to a final
you certainly feel that defeat and
it was a great motivator for us to
finish our league season strong.”
Celtic have been relentless again
this season, winning 19 of their 21
league games, and reaching this
semi-final while their Scottish Cup
campaign kicks off at home to
Morton next weekend. However,
there is no danger of any laurels
being rested on with Postecoglou
in charge - and his players have
clearly bought into his vision.
He added: “What we’ve tried to do
is set up a platform for our players
to constantly look to be better.
Whatever we have achieved so far,
our goal is to be stronger every
week. We have had a really strong
first half of the year domestically
and our goal is to finish stronger.
If we do that, we know that
Hampden is a
venue I like –
you know you
are going there
for a special
occasion and
you have
supporters
of both sides
giving it great
colour and
atmosphere so
we are looking
forward to it
success will come our way. But
the players are pretty good at
making sure they are focused on
whatever the next challenge is.”
The World Cup in Qatar saw a
change to the calendar, with Celtic
having more than four weeks
away from Premiership action
but they resumed as they went
into the shutdown – by winning.
The manager said: “The break
was an interesting one. We had
a really hectic schedule leading
into it domestically and in the
Champions League. Such a long
break in the season is unusual and
you worry whether the players
maybe lose an edge in sharpness
but we have come back and
looked strong and that probably
means the lads have benefited
from a little bit of time off.
“We went to Australia and that
helped shorten the break for us. It
was good for the club to get our
brand on the global stage and
give back to the communities
who support us. Some of the
players are fairly new to the
club and for them to see how
popular the club is on the other
side of the world was great.”
The Celtic manager has
bolstered his squad this month
with the arrivals of Alistair
Johnston, Yuki Kobayashi and
Tomoki Iwata at Parkhead.
He added: “Sometimes when
things are going well there might
be a little bit of a reluctance to
sort of push on because you fear
upsetting what you have already
got but my belief is that we are
still building a team here. We
are only into the second year of
building a team, and a squad, and
these things take time. I think
we’ve seen progression in the
whole 18 months or so I’ve been
here and that is the key for us. If
we continue to do that, we don’t
need to worry about measuring
up against particular targets.”
KILMARNOCK
The midfielder made his
senior debut for Fulham
in an EFL Cup tie as a
16-year-old in August 2017 –
ironically on the same night Celtic
beat Kilmarnock 5-0 in the last
League Cup meeting between the
teams. He left Craven Cottage in
the summer of 2020 and joined MK
Dons in January 2021. The 22-yearold
was an ever present for the
English League 1 club in the first
half of last season, netting seven
goals and being named EFL Young
Player of the Month for November.
On this very weekend a year ago,
although he didn’t know it at the
time, O’Riley was making his last
appearance for the Dons. Having
scored the winner against AFC
Wimbledon in midweek he helped
his side win 2-1 away to Portsmouth,
keeping them fifth in the table
and very much in the promotion
mix. They would eventually finish
third but lost out to Wycombe
Wanderers in the play-offs.
As he returned home from Fratton
Park 12 months ago, O’Riley was
We have a good
understanding
of Kilmarnock
having just
played them
so we’re going
into it feeling
really good. It’s
always better if
you can score
early but over
the course of
the game, if we
can play our
football, I’m
sure we’ll be in
”
planning for upcoming games
against Doncaster Rovers and
Burton Albion but instead he would
soon be heading north to seal a
long-term contract with Celtic.
His arrival was announced on
Thursday January 20, 2022 when he
became Ange Postecoglou’s fifth
signing of the winter window after
Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi,
Reo Hatate and Johnny Kenny.
O’Riley recalled: “I remember that
day against Portsmouth because
it was a good result for a club of
our size to go there and win. I
didn’t know it was going to be my
last game at the time. The Celtic
move came about very quickly
– probably in the space of about
two days. I found out one night
and the next day I was travelling
to London to do my medical.
“My debut was against Hearts at
Tynecastle. It was a good game
and quite a hostile atmosphere.
It was a game for me to adapt
to the intensity of things so I
remember that one really clearly.
Another one that sticks out is the
3-0 win against Rangers. That was
only my third game at the club
and the atmosphere was pretty
crazy – it was a night game and
I was really struck by the noise
in the stadium. I got my first
goal against Aberdeen not long
after so that was good as well.”
Celtic will be backed by another
huge following at the National
Stadium but O’Riley can also
count on some additional support
from his family, who have been
clocking up the miles this season.
He said: “My mum and dad come
to every single game – home and
away. Even if it’s Ross County away,
they will drive up. They moved to
Glasgow when I signed for Celtic
and I don’t have any siblings so
maybe that makes it a bit easier for
them to follow the football. It’s good
to have that support and they really
enjoy it – they were even at the
Champions League games abroad.”
doing all he can to help Celtic take
another step towards retaining the
League Cup trophy they clinched
before he signed last season.
He came off the bench in last
week’s 2-0 win over Kilmarnock
but has started 19 of Celtic’s 21
cinch Premiership matches this
term, helping them to a ninepoint
lead at the summit.
O’Riley added: “We didn’t play
our best game against Rangers
in our last game at Hampden
so hopefully we can make
amends for that. We have a good
understanding of Kilmarnock
having just played them so we’re
going into it feeling really good.
It’s always better if you can score
early but over the course of the
game, if we can play our football,
I’m sure we’ll be in a good place.
“It would be great if we could go
on and win the trophy. Lots of
players don’t get the chance to
My mum and
dad come to
every single
game – home
and away.
Even if it’s Ross
County away,
they will drive
up... It’s good
to have that
support and
they really
enjoy it
”
win any in their career so to only
be one game away from the final
is exciting. It would be lovely to get
my first goal of the season but I’m
trying not to think about that any
more. I’ve gone close quite a few
times so I’m hoping that when one
drops a few more will as well.”
The recent month-long World
Cup break was unusual but
O’Riley – who has been capped
by Denmark at U21 level – feels
it has been beneficial going into
the business end of the season.
He said: “I don’t think it has affected
us too much as a team, which is
good. Personally I have managed
to stay fit throughout the season so
it has been positive in that sense.
When you’ve played a lot of football
it’s good to able to shut down the
system and come back with a fresh
body and, most importantly, a fresh
mind because it’s quite full-on at
this football club as we all know.
“It’s relentless in that you are
expected to win every game but
that’s also great fun because it’s
the competitive side we all want to
be a part of and it makes you play
your best football. It’s something
I am grateful to be part of. I feel
like I’ve improved a lot as a player
in my time here because of the
manager and the staff around the
club. It’s a great club to be part of.”
NEW YEAR,
SAME
DEMANDS
By Andrew Fitzsimmons | Kilmarnock FC Marketing and Media Co-ordinator
‘If you fancy a trip to Hampden Park, sign Derek
McInnes as manager’ was the line that rang out of the
Rugby Park press box as Kilmarnock ended a decadelong
wait for a trip to the National Stadium.
VIAPLAY CUP SEMI-FINAL
CELTIC v
KILMARNOCK
ilmarnock supporters will
K
return to Mount Florida
for the first time in over
10 years, with memories
of Dieter Van Tornhout’s late winner
in the 2012 League Cup final still
replaying in their minds.
During their period of prolonged
absence, the man who they now
call ‘the gaffer’ became very well
acquainted with the Hampden
Park dug-out, where he will once
again position himself on Saturday
evening in hope of extending
an already impressive record
in knock-out competitions.
The man who won this trophy
with Aberdeen in 2013/14 said: “I’ve
just always liked cup football. It
presents the best opportunity for
real tangible success. I think that
I’ve been lucky to manage a lot of
good teams, and a lot of squads
with very competitive players,
who see the bigger picture. It’s all
about having good players who
get you to the latter stages.”
Throughout his playing career,
McInnes was also a prominent
figure at national semi-finals.
To this day, memories of those
experiences come to mind as he
casually reels off his past record:
“Lost a semi-final to Hibs as a player
with St Johnstone, beat Hibs in a
semi-final with Dundee United…”
It’s evident that years down the
line, an abundance of experience
in Glasgow’s Southside has shaped
the 51-year-old’s mindset to
approach a trip to Hampden in the
same way as any regular fixture
- a mentality he’s aiming to instil
across the core of Rugby Park, from
the stands to the dressing room.
He said: “I think your mentality
going into a cup competition
should be ‘why not us?’. Somebody
has got to win it and I feel that
if we’re good enough for 90
minutes we can beat anybody.
At Aberdeen, trips to Hampden
became familiar to the players
and supporters, and that helped
us to feel that we belonged there.
In time, I would love to get to
that stage with Kilmarnock.
“I want to leave our mark on
cup competitions and reference
them as an important part of
our campaigns. I don’t want us
just to be fulfilling fixtures and
not fulfilling our potential. We
must enter each competition
with the mindset that we’re in
with a chance of winning it, and
I said that to the players in our
first game up at Fraserburgh. Yes,
you’ve got to go through a group
stage and win another couple
of rounds, but before you know
it you could arrive at Hampden,
and that’s where we are.”
From thousands lining John
Finnie Street to celebrate the
cup-winning heroes of 1997 and
2012, to last term’s Championshipwinning
triumph resulting in
more than 5,000 season tickets
When you
try to sell the
story for future
players to come
to Kilmarnock,
you can say
‘we won a
league’, ‘we got
to Hampden’
and hopefully
even ‘we got
to a final’
”
20
KILMARNOCK
being sold – for the first time
since the early 90s – the success of
Kilmarnock FC always reverberates
across the community. In the
eyes of the manager, the tremors
of cup success can also have an
impact much further afield.
He added: “When you try to sell
the story for future players to
come to Kilmarnock, you can
say ‘we won a league’, ‘we got to
Hampden’ and hopefully even ‘we
got to a final’. All of these things
are used as bona fide evidence of
what the club is capable of, and
with the new training ground
proposal, you add new layers to
our selling point to attract players.”
A short stroll up the tight corridors
towards the manager’s office
provides a constant reminder
that McInnes is walking in the
footsteps of former Killie bosses
who have defied the odds in cup
competitions to earn a place
between picture frames which
decorate the walls of Rugby Park.
He said: “You can’t come to work
every day without knowing that
those cup teams will always be
revered. I remember Bobby’s
cup-winning side having played
against them often enough.
Kenny’s team in 2012 also shows
what can be done - nobody would
have fancied them against Celtic.
With that in mind, it wouldn’t
be the biggest shock for it to
happen again, and that’s belief
that we need to hang on to.
“At 5.30pm on Saturday, players
and supporters alike should be
out there feeling positive. We’re
there on merit, we’re there as
a Premiership club and we’re
there to try and get the job done.
At times, we’re going to have
to suffer possession and Celtic
will have a lot of the ball. I would
give the same message to the
supporters as I would to the fans
- we must believe that we have
a good enough performance
in us to win the game.”
HE’S ONE OF
THEIR OWN
By Andrew Fitzsimmons | Kilmarnock FC Marketing and Media Co-ordinator
The 2007 League Cup semi-final line-ups were littered
with emerging talent that would go on to become
household names north and south of the border. For
on-looking school pupil Rory McKenzie, it was an
introduction to a now adoring Kilmarnock support.
A
young Steven Naismith
stole the show when
his hat-trick against
Falkirk’s on-loan
goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel
sent Kilmarnock into the League
Cup final against Hibs. However,
it’s uncommon knowledge that
the next product to emerge from
the Kilmarnock FC youth academy
also found the net that evening.
Reflecting on a cold midweek tie
under the Fir Park floodlights,
Kilmarnock stalwart Rory McKenzie
recalls his first involvement in a
national semi-final, as a fresh-faced
14-year-old, no less: “Our youth
team were involved in the halftime
challenge that day: running
from the halfway line with the
aim of beating the opposition
goalkeeper in a one-on-one
situation. I think that I scored as
well! It was probably my last goal!”
The resulting cup final turned out
to be a day to forget for the Ayrshire
side, with supporters forced to
wait another five years before the
club finally put fingerprints on
Before the
Championshipwinning
game against
Arbroath,
finishing third
in the league
and qualifying
for Europe
was definitely
the high point
in my career.
I think the
dream is now
to win a trophy
at Hampden
”
the League Cup trophy in 2012:
a triumph that would complete
Kilmarnock’s quest to claim all
three major Scottish titles since
being established in 1869.
By the time Kilmarnock’s eventual
League Cup success came around,
McKenzie was learning his trade
in the lower leagues, which was
an experience that would arm him
with the tools to amass more than
300 appearances for his local club.
Discussing how he followed the
famous 2012 cup run, McKenzie
recalls: “I was out on loan at Brechin
the last time we reached Hampden.
I think our match got called off on
the day of the semi-final because
I remember listening to the Ayr
game in the car with my dad. On
the day of the final, all the youth
team lads got to go along and sit
together. It was a huge upset and
what a day it turned out to be.”
Throughout the successful 2012 cup
run, ‘Believe to Achieve’ was the
campaign line used by manager
Kenny Shiels, who would later
24
VIAPLAY CUP SEMI-FINAL
CELTIC v
KILMARNOCK
go on to give McKenzie his club
debut. According to Kilmarnock’s
homegrown utility man, the
spirit of the 2012 team led by
two fellow local lads – Garry Hay
and James Fowler – has given
the current squad reason to
believe that another underdog
story could be written in the
stars above Mount Florida.
“I think that’s what you need to
hang on to. Celtic have shown
that they’re an extremely strong
team, but we need to grab
on to something to keep the
belief high. It’s a one-off game
and anything can happen as
the lads showed 10 years ago. I
think that, if we’re honest, not
even Killie fans expected us to
get a result that day and it just
shows you what can be done.”
Despite making his debut more
than a decade ago, McKenzie
is preparing to step on to the
Hampden Park turf for the very
first time as Kilmarnock make a
long-awaited return to Glasgow’s
Southside. When asked about
the club’s prolonged absence
from the National Stadium, Killie’s
No.7 ironically nodded to the
influence of his current boss.
He said: “It was usually the
manager of the Aberdeen team
who put us out just before
Hampden. That happened a few
times in extra-time and penalties.
During a cup run, you need
everything to go in your favour
and the manager has definitely
played a big part in guiding us
along the way. When it comes
to winning cup competitions,
he’s been there and done it.”
Despite having worked under
11 different managers prior to
McInnes, the 29-year-old has
always remained a key member
of the squad, experiencing
highs including last season’s
Championship-winning campaign
but McKenzie has far from settled
with his current silverware.
The former Scotland U21 player
said: “Before the Championshipwinning
game against Arbroath,
finishing third in the league
and qualifying for Europe was
definitely the high point in my
career. I think the dream is now
to win a trophy at Hampden.
“This is just the semi-final and
we need to be very conscious of
that. Yes, it’s a big game, but if
you do well there’s still another
game to come. The fact it will be
a full house and a live game on TV
makes it an absolutely amazing
experience, but the ultimate dream
is of course to win a trophy.
“It’s not going to get any tougher
than playing Celtic at Hampden
in front of that sort of crowd. My
message to the fans ahead of
the game would be stick with us.
There’s going to be times in the
game when Celtic have much more
of the ball, and we’ll be sitting off
defending. It’s going to be a hell
of a task, but with the supporters
behind us we have half a chance.”
WE’VE
MET
BEFORE
Celtic and Kilmarnock have
met twice in the cinch
Premiership this season,
with the Hoops winning at
Rugby Park in August and
at Parkhead last weekend…
Celtic ran out convincing winners in the Ayrshire sunshine
to extend their unbeaten run in the cinch Premiership to
35 matches. Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring early on
and Jota doubled the lead in 35 minutes with a stunning
strike from distance. Moritz Jenz added the third goal
with an acrobatic effort in first-half stoppage time and
Carl Starfelt made it 4-0 following a corner in 76 minutes.
Giorgos Giakoumakis rounded off a great afternoon’s work
for the visitors when he found the net with an overhead
kick eight minutes from time.
SATURDAY JANUARY 7, 2023
Celtic 2-0 Kilmarnock
Ange Postecoglou’s side made it 10 home wins out of 10
in the cinch Premiership this season when they overcame
stubborn first-half resistance from Derek McInnes’ men to
secure another three points. Jota broke the deadlock after
45 minutes when he turned in a Daizen Maeda cross for his
eighth goal of 2022/23. It was all over six minutes into the
second period when Reo Hatate sent in a dangerous cross
from the right and Ash Taylor diverted it into his own net
under pressure from Kyogo Furuhashi. The Hoops passed
up a number of great chances to increase their lead
but James Forrest and Giorgos Giakoumakis rattled the
woodwork and Sam Walker made some fine saves.
Celtic have enjoyed many memorable occasions at
Hampden Park and this was another as Davie Hay’s side
came from behind to beat Dundee United in the 100th
Scottish Cup final. Stuart Beedie gave Jim McLean’s
men the lead but Davie Provan equalised with a brilliant
dramatic 84th-minute winner from a Roy Aitken cross to
the delight of the Celtic fans in the 60,346 crowd.
Kilmarnock 1-0 Ayr United
An Ayrshire derby for a place in a cup final. The stakes
could hardly have been higher and Kilmarnock’s
patience was eventually rewarded as they beat their
First Division opponents in front of 25,057 fans at the
National Stadium. Ayr defended doggedly and Kevin
Cuthbert pulled off a number of fine saves for Brian
Reid’s men but Dean Shiels finally broke the deadlock 11
minutes from the end of extra time. It was a memorable
afternoon for Killie and there was even better to come
when they stunned Celtic in the final two months later.
Kilmarnock have reached the League Cup final on six occasions. They
famously beat Celtic 1-0 to lift the trophy for the first and only time in
2011/12. Killie have been runners-up five times - to Dundee (1952/53),
Rangers (1960/61), Hearts (1962/63), Celtic (2000/01) and Hibernian (2006/07).
3
Kilmarnock have won the Scottish
Cup three times, most recently in
1997 when Paul Wright scored the
only goal in a 1-0 win over Falkirk
at Ibrox. They also lifted the trophy
back in 1920 and 1929.
Oli Shaw is Killie’s leading scorer
Kilmarnock’s last win over Celtic came more
than four years ago - on Sunday September 23,
2018. Leigh Griffiths gave the Hoops a first-half
lead at Rugby Park but Chris Burke equalised
and Stuart Findlay grabbed a last-minute goal
to secure a 2-1 victory for Steve Clarke’s side. At
the time it was a fourth match without defeat for
Killie against Celtic.
Kilmarnock have reached the last four of this
competition on 10 previous occasions. Their first
semi-final appearance was in October 1952 when
they beat Rangers 1-0 thanks to a late goal from
Willie Jack in front of 45,715 fans at Hampden.
The result was a big shock as the Ibrox side
went on to win the title and the Scottish Cup in
1952/53, while Killie finished fourth in Division B.
Kilmarnock’s last League Cup semi-final was 11
LEAGUE CUP FINAL
Swede dreams
Season 2000/01 was a momentous one for
Celtic as they swept all before them to clinch
the third Treble in their history, in what was
Martin O’Neill’s first season as manager.
The first leg of that trophy haul
came at Hampden Park on
Sunday March 18, 2001 when
Kilmarnock were beaten 3-0 in
the League Cup final thanks to
a Henrik Larsson hat-trick.
Celtic beat Hearts 5-2 after extra
time at Tynecastle in their quarterfinal
then saw off Rangers 3-1 in
the semi-finals, with a double
from Larsson and a goal from
Chris Sutton. Lubo Moravcik and
Ibrox duo Claudio Reyna and
Michael Mols were all sent off in
the closing minutes of the game.
The Hoops were strong favourites
when they lined up against Bobby
Williamson’s men in the final. Killie
had beaten St Mirren 3-0 in their
last-four tie at the National Stadium
but went into the big game on the
back of defeats to Hibernian in the
Scottish Cup and Hearts in the SPL.
Celtic had lost just one domestic
game all season and, although it
was goalless at half-time, super
Swede Larsson took centre stage
after the break with three more
goals in a glittering season. He fired
the opener past Gordon Marshall
early in the second half and even
the loss of Sutton to a red card on
the hour mark for a challenge on
Gary Holt didn’t disrupt the Hoops.
Larsson put the match beyond
Killie in 74 minutes then completed
his hat-trick with a superb solo
goal nine minutes from the end.
It was a day to remember for
O’Neill’s side and there was much
more to come. Celtic went on to
take the title, finishing 15 points
clear of Rangers and they sealed
a first Treble since the Jock
Stein era with a 3-0 victory over
Hibernian in the Scottish Cup
final. Larsson grabbed a double
in that game to take his tally for
2000/01 to an incredible 53 goals,
of which 35 came in the SPL.
Kilmarnock also finished the
season on a high, beating Celtic
1-0 at Rugby Park with an Alan
Mahood goal to finish fourth in the
table and qualify for the UEFA Cup.
LEAGUE CUP FINAL
Unlikely hero
Kilmarnock lifted the League Cup for the first time in
their history in season 2011/12 thanks to a 1-0 win over
Celtic on an unforgettable day for the Ayrshire club.
It was a triumph against the
odds for Kenny Shiels’ team
and it came courtesy of a late
goal from substitute Dieter Van
Tornhout and a man-of-the-match
display by keeper Cammy Bell.
The Belgian striker arrived at Rugby
Park in January 2012 after a spell
in Cyprus and would move on in
the summer to join Antwerp. He
scored just twice in 13 appearances
for Kilmarnock – his second goal
came in a 4-2 loss to St Mirren but
his first could hardly have been
more important or dramatic.
There were just seven minutes left
at Hampden when Van Tornhout –
on as a substitute for Gary Harkins
some 10 minutes earlier – found
the net with a header from a Lee
Johnson cross. It was quite a way
to celebrate his 27th birthday,
which fell on the same day as the
final – Sunday March 18, 2012.
With captain Manuel Pascali out
injured, James Fowler captained
a Killie side who had knocked out
Queen of the South, East Fife and
Ayr United en route to the final.
Celtic had accounted for Ross
County, Hibernian and Falkirk as
they looked to make up for defeat
to Rangers in the 2011 final.
Kilmarnock went into the game
having taken just two points
from their previous four SPL
outings but they had recently
won 1-0 at Ibrox and had also led
Celtic 3-0 at Rugby Park back
in October before Neil Lennon’s
men rallied to force a 3-3 draw.
Bell made some big saves,
notably from Gary Hooper and
Anthony Stokes, but Killie also
carried a threat and Dean Shiels
missed a great chance before
the decisive moment arrived in
the 83rd minute. Ben Gordon
fed Johnson down the left and
the midfielder’s perfect cross
was met by Van Tornhout at
the back post – his header gave
Fraser Forster no chance. Celtic
pressed hard for an equaliser but
this was Kilmarnock’s day and
they held on for a famous win.
The Hoops would go on to take
the 2011/12 SPL title by a distance,
getting over the line in style with
a 6-0 success at Rugby Park in the
final fixture before the split, with
Kilmarnock finishing seventh.
In-form Celtic booked their place
in the League Cup final after
knocking out the holders in front
of a Saturday evening crowd of
42,298 at the National Stadium.
In the first match after the
international break, Ange
Postecoglou’s men were deserved
winners but it took a 73rdminute
goal from substitute
James Forrest to get the better
of Callum Davidson’s side.
The Hoops wore No 10 on their
shorts as a tribute to Lisbon
Lion Bertie Auld and there was
a minute’s applause before the
game to mark the passing of a
great player and character.
Celtic started positively, with
Jota at the heart of much of
their good work, but Saints
held firm and there were only
17 minutes remaining when the
deadlock was finally broken.
Jota’s cross was only partially
cleared and Forrest – only on
the pitch for a few minutes
as a replacement for Liel
Abada – thumped the ball past
Zander Clark from six yards.
The Hoops went on to beat 2-1
Hibernian in the final on Sunday
December 19, coming from behind
to clinch the silverware thanks
some good spells early on but it
was Kilmarnock who broke the
Naismith latched on to a flick from
Colin Nish to fire past Schmeichel.
The Scotland U21 striker grabbed
the second goal with 20 minutes
from the penalty spot in 78
IN MEMORIAM
Frank McGarvey
Celtic and Scottish football lost an iconic
figure on New Year’s Day when Frank
McGarvey passed away at the age of 66.
Frank was brought to Celtic from
Liverpool by Billy McNeil in March
1980 for a then Scottish record fee
of around £250,000. He scored his
first goal for the club in a 4-0 win
over Hibernian at the end of that
month and headed a late winner
against Rangers a few days later.
Over a successful five years at
Parkhead, he won two league
titles, two Scottish Cups and also
claimed the League Cup with
Celtic, helping them beat Rangers
2-1 in the 1982/83 final. He played
a total of 245 games for Celtic
and contributed 109 goals.
Frank’s last goal for the Hoops was
probably his most famous - a diving
header to secure a 2-1 victory over
Dundee United in the 1985 Scottish
Cup final after Davie Provan’s
free-kick had levelled the scores.
That summer he returned to
St Mirren, where his senior career
began in 1974/75. In his first spell
at Love Street, Frank helped Alex
Ferguson’s side win the 1976/77
First Division title and a decade
later he was part of Alex Smith’s
team who beat Dundee United
in the 1987 Scottish Cup final,
having scored the winner in
the semi-final against Hearts.
In all he made 341 appearances,
scoring 102 goals, across his two
spells with the Paisley club.
n Frank in action for Scotland
j Playing for Celtic in the 80s
r With Davie Provan celebrating
the 1985 Scottish Cup win
Frank’s talent saw him earn seven
caps for Scotland – the first as
a substitute in a 1-0 win over
Northern Ireland in the Home
International Championship in
May 1979. A fortnight later he was
in the starting line-up for a friendly
against Argentina when a young
Diego Maradona made his mark
at Hampden. His final appearance
in the dark blue was a 2-1 victory
over Wales in February 1984.
He will always be synonymous
with Celtic and St Mirren, where
he is revered by the supporters
of both clubs, but Frank also had
spells with Queen of the South
and Clyde in the latter stages of
his career. His contribution to the
game will never be forgotten.
KILMARNOCK
Previous League
Cup meetings
Celtic and Kilmarnock have met on 11 previous
occasions in the League Cup – the Hoops
have won seven of those matches including
the only previous semi-final clash.
That was on a bitterly cold
night on Wednesday
February 16, 2000 when
Lubo Moravcik (pictured right)
scored the only goal midway
through the second half in front
of 22,926 fans. Kenny Dalglish
was in charge following the
departure of John Barnes the
previous midweek. In a game of
few chances, Bobby Williamson’s
Killie had Christophe Cocard
sent off 18 minutes from the
end. Celtic went on to beat
Aberdeen 2-0 in the final.
Kilmarnock’s two wins came
in the group stage in 1964/65
– a season when they won the
league title under Willie Waddell
– and the final in 2011/12.
The most recent meeting was a last-
16 tie in August 2017 when Celtic
won 5-0 thanks to goals from Leigh
Griffiths (2), Anthony Ralston, Kieran
Tierney and Stuart Armstrong.
The first ever League Cup
semi-finals took place in March
1947. Aberdeen thrashed Heart
of Midlothian 6-2 at Easter
Road and Rangers ran out 3-1
winners against Hibernian at
Hampden Park before going
on to defeat the Dons 4-0 in
the final.
The highest-scoring League
Cup semi-final came in
the 1959/60 competition
when Heart of Midlothian
hammered Cowdenbeath 9-3
at Easter Road. Ian Crawford
scored four of the goals for
Tommy Walker’s side, who
beat Third Lanark in the final.
There has not been a goalless
draw in a League Cup semifinal
since season 2008/09
when Celtic and Dundee
United met at Hampden. It
was 0-0 after 120 minutes, then
Celtic won a marathon penalty
shoot-out 11-10 to reach the
final, where they beat Rangers.
