JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE
In the past few years, we have encountered events that demonstrate how swiftly and severely our lives
could change. That’s why, in addition to setting solid goals that we aim to achieve, it’s also wise to
concentrate on things that are rewarding regardless of the obstacles we may face. Being kind to others,
maintaining a healthy body and mind, and cultivating relationships with those you care about are some
of the attributes that come to mind. Interestingly, these qualities can be nurtured at BigShot, Tropicana
Golf & Country Resort’s (“TGCR”) newest attraction. It’s a great spot to have fun and spend time with
family, friends and colleagues while staying in shape.
Read more about it in our Cover Story interview with Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina and her son, Dani
Effendi. If going green is a goal of yours for this year and beyond, we’ve got a rundown of some local
brands to get you started on your eco-friendly journey. Speaking of which, TGCR’s environment is so
pristine that it attracts migratory birds from as far as Siberia! Read about it in our Nature section. Since
January and February are celebratory months namely Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, we have
got several write-ups on these. A yee sang recipe, TGCR’s Chinese New Year dishes, what to expect if
you spend Chinese New Year in China, romantic scents for him and her, how to bring back the spark in
your relationship and more are all worth checking out. Also noteworthy is our exclusive interview with
renowned French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Find out why he says he is not a “nose”, and why he
compares being a perfumer to acting. We sincerely hope you will enjoy what we have put together for
you since there is certainly more to see, read and learn from in this issue. With that, we wish you a happy
Chinese New Year and a lovely Valentine’s Day, as well as a brighter and better 2023 and beyond!
14
CHINESE
HOROSCOPE
2023
Here’s a compilation of the 12 animal signs’
predictions for the Year of the Rabbit
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
RABBIT
(Birth years: 2011, 1999, 1987,
1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, 1927)
Those born under the sign of the
Rabbit will enjoy a prosperous
year in 2023. After a time of
strife and difficulty spanning
two years, things will eventually
begin to improve. Your life will
take a turn for the better, and
you will feel accomplished and
pleased with all of your hard
work.
DRAGON
(Birth years: 2012, 2000, 1988,
1976, 1964, 1952, 1940, 1928)
There is high chance that
all of your hard work will be
acknowledged. This year brings
the possibility of gaining awards
and recognition. The more you
help others, the more you will
be helped in return. Maintain a
mindset that is open to helping
those around you without
expecting anything in return for
your efforts.
15
SNAKE
(Birth years: 2013, 2001, 1989,
1977, 1965, 1953, 1941, 1929)
This is the year that will
provide you doors that lead
to prosperous careers and
financial opportunities. All that
is required of you is to put forth
your absolute best effort and
provide the greatest possible
level of service. You will soon
have the chance to travel. It is
recommended that you make the
most of the situation.
HORSE
(Birth years: 2014, 2002, 1990,
1978, 1966, 1954, 1942, 1930)
You will enter a year of struggle
with Tai Sui (the age star), which
will have a significant impact on
your luck. You’ll need to exercise
greater caution in your work,
as it will be demanding. You
can, however, get through this
challenging year with consistent
effort. If you’re just starting
out in your professional life, be
cautious about who you let into
your inner circle.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 SEASONS
GOAT
(Birth years: 2015, 2003, 1991,
1979, 1967, 1955, 1943, 1931)
There are some favourable
circumstances as well as some
unfavourable ones, but overall,
they will balance one another
out and keep you at peace. You
will find yourself performing at
the peak of your capability, and
may even push yourself beyond
your limit, because you will be
favoured by superiors, partners
and clients whether you are
self-employed or work for a
corporation.
MONKEY
(Birth years: 2016, 2004, 1992,
1980, 1968, 1956, 1944, 1932)
This year could be a big one
for you in terms of travel
opportunities, whether they are
related to your work or your
education. Business owners
could become aware of potential
chances for conducting business
in other countries. Be extremely
careful with money, and create
budgets in order to prevent
going over your spending limit.
16
ROOSTER
(Birth years: 2017, 2005, 1993,
1981, 1969, 1957, 1945, 1933)
Previous investments might
experience a rise in value. Put in
extra effort to ensure that you
are paying close attention to
your finances to prevent losses.
You’ll think more about how to
strengthen your relationships
with others. You take comfort in
being alone, therefore building
relationships has been difficult for
you. It’s time to make a change.
DOG
(Birth years: 2018, 2006, 1994,
1982, 1970, 1958, 1946, 1934)
People born in the Year of the
Dog will have good fortune in
the Year of the Water Rabbit.
You’ll experience growth in most
areas of your life, which will
make you incredibly content. You
are blessed to be surrounded
by individuals who support and
encourage you, and you will feel
grateful to have them in your life
this year.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
PIG
(Birth years: 2019, 2007, 1995,
1983, 1971, 1959, 1947, 1935)
People born under the animal sign
of the Pig will have a generally
prosperous year in 2023. They will
have good personal development
in their careers with many
opportunities. In terms of wealth,
they will have a decent chance
of accumulating riches through
side businesses. In terms of love,
the single Pig will meet the ideal
partner for marriage thanks to the
Hong Luan auspicious star.
RAT
(Birth years: 2008, 1996, 1984,
1972, 1960, 1948, 1936, 1924)
You will see an increase in energy
this year. Your social position will
rise, and the accomplishments
in your professional life will
provide you with a great deal
of fulfilment. There is a good
chance that you will move up in
the organisational chart at work
or perhaps switch jobs, both of
which would result in a significant
increase in income.
17
OX
(Birth years: 2009, 1997, 1985,
1973, 1961, 1949, 1937, 1925)
The need to make major changes
in your life will be overwhelming.
The people closest to you and
the people you meet throughout
your journey will be tremendous
sources of encouragement and
help you succeed. Your own selfdoubt
is the only thing that could
be an issue. Just believe in yourself
and your abilities, and give it your
all to achieve your goals.
TIGER
(Birth years: 2010, 1998, 1986,
1974, 1962, 1950, 1938, 1926)
As a whole, this year should be a
good one for you, but there will
be some unexpected turns along
the way. If you want to prevent
conflict and usher in a favourable
situation, you need to learn to
draw positive conclusions from
mistakes, recognise your flaws
and remain level-headed in the
face of adversity.

TROPICANA AMAN UNVEILS HANA
RESIDENCES, FINAL VILLA SERIES
32
Tropicana Aman, the largest 863-acre township by Tropicana in
Kota Kemuning, unveiled its exclusive preview for Hana Residences,
its final villa series. Hana Residences offers 130 lavish 2- and
3-storey bungalows and 2-storey semi-detached homes, rounding
out Tropicana Aman’s diverse range of residential and commercial
offerings. Spanning 28 acres with a gross development value
(“GDV”) of RM403 million, Hana Residences’ elevated outlook
includes lakeside views and lift access across all levels for selected
units. Lot sizes range from 45’ x 80’ to 80’ x 100’ with built-ups
from 4,004 sq ft to 9,052 sq ft, delivering expansive spaces for
versatile, multigenerational living. The development is projected
for completion in Q3 2025.
Joanne Lee, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Tropicana, shared
more on the villa series. “We named Hana Residences for the
range of meanings of the word ‘Hana’, from ‘flower’ in Japanese
to ‘happiness’ and ‘bliss’ in Arabic. It was developed along
three design principles, namely Hearth, Habitat and Haven,
addressing the pillars of home, surroundings and amenities. As
Tropicana Aman’s final landed residential offering, we sought to
differentiate Hana Residences by siting it on elevated ground as
a private enclave overlooking the surrounding township, in line
with our core mantra of Redefining the Art of Living,” she said.
Bespoke home personalisation services for the development
are available through Tropicana’s T.Living programme. T.Living
allows Hana Residences owners to customise their property with
‘Bella,’ a darker theme for stylish, sophisticated aesthetics and
a modern palette, or ‘Charisma,’ a lighter theme for soothing
colours and a sense of tranquillity and harmony. Purchasers
can further tailor their homes with T.Living’s Protection, Smart,
Comfort and Eco packages, catering for resident security, smart
home, cooling and sustainability needs respectively.
The three pillars of Hearth, Habitat and Haven express Tropicana’s
unique development DNA within Hana Residences, emphasising
innovative concepts & design, facilities and generous open
spaces, among others. In line with the Group’s commitment
to environmental, social and corporate governance (“ESG”)
principles, it is designed as a serene, self-sustaining walking and
biking community, fostering active and sustainable lifestyles
while reducing carbon footprints across the board. The township
is rounded out by a robust connectivity profile, with proximity
to major routes such as the Shah Alam (“KESAS”), South Klang
Valley, and West Coast Expressways, as well as the North-South
Expressway Central Link. For details, visit tropicanaaman.com.
for them to rest in occasionally. If and when they get
tired of us, they can always retreat to the comfort
of their little dwelling. Usually, only cats and dogs
require their own abode. While there is a variety of
cute pet homes as well as custom-made ones (think
Paris Hilton’s two-storey mini mansion for her little
dogs), there are other important factors to consider.
52
For instance, according to Susanne Hellman
Holmstrom, the first cat psychologist in Sweden,
cats have specific needs beyond the basics when it
comes to their living quarters. As cats spend most
of their time indoors, the requirements for their own
home include a place to scratch, play and clean their
fur. Based on these needs, Susanne teamed up with
interior designer Eleonor Moschevitz to construct
the Cat Flat. It resembles a wooden storage cabinet
fitted with angled vertical slats to give it height and
features three levels with interesting components
and toys for kitties. Suffice to say, our feline friends
deserve a home that’s part playground and part
home.
Dogs have slightly different requirements. Some
dogs become overwhelmed by visitors or other
animals, so an indoor dog house can provide
them with a secure place to hide out when they
feel scared or unsafe. When you think of outdoor
dog houses, the first thing that springs to mind is
protection because many dog breeds are weathersensitive.
Harsh weather (extreme cold or heat) will
eventually take its toll on even tough dogs. Outdoor
dog houses should be positioned above ground to
allow for ventilation and painted in a light colour to
reflect heat from the sun. It must also be high and
spacious enough to enable the dog to fully stand up
and wander about in it.
STAYCATION
The closeness and intimacy that you feel with your
loved one when you are at home can be refreshed by
taking your partner out of the house for some quality
time together. All it takes is a staycation with your
help you remember what it is about him or her that
you adore and what you need to do to maintain the
strength of your relationship.
Among the top places we recommend you to go on
of the 150 chic guest rooms and suites at W Kuala
cutting-edge architecture. All of the rooms and
suites combine traditional and contemporary design
frequently seen on Malaysian kites and pixelated
One of the highly-recommended places to visit on the
eve of the Chinese New Year is Longhua temple, which
is Shanghai’s largest and most revered temple. Hear the
enormous bronze bell rung 108 times to ward off evil
spirits and welcome in the New Year with prosperity.
In the midst of all the celebrations for the Chinese
New Year, the Yuyuan Lantern Festival stands out. No
other lantern festival can compare to the one held in
Shanghai because it is such an important part of the
city’s culture and history. See hundreds of lanterns
painstakingly crafted using a combination of modern
technology and engineering, and the traditional
aesthetics of China. The Yuyuan Garden, known for its
stunning landscaping, plays host to the festival, which
runs for several days during the festive season. If you’re
looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city,
make a day trip to Wuzhen Water Town, a picturesque
historic town located just over 100 kilometres from
Shanghai. Take a boat ride and see the town’s striking
the river. The Wuzhen Folk Culture Museum, the
HONG KONG
When it’s time for the Chinese New Year, flower
decorations start popping up pretty much everywhere
in Hong Kong. Blooms such as orchids, peach blossoms
and pussy willows are among those that are said to
bring good fortune and financial success. In the course
of a typical festive week, the city becomes home to a
plethora of flower markets, one of the largest and most
well-attended of which is located in Victoria Park in
Causeway Bay. Also, don’t miss out on Hong Kong’s
Chinese New Year Night Parade, which is one of the
city’s most colourful and exciting events. Fireworks,
acrobats and eye-catching floats are some of the
exciting elements that make up the fiesta. The annual
Chinese New Year Race Day is another attraction. Held
on the third day of the festival, it draws large crowds
to the Sha Tin Racecourse since horse racing is very
popular in Hong Kong. The third day of Chinese New
Year also involves a trip to a temple for many people
in Hong Kong. Visitors may find it interesting to watch
worshippers at Wong Tai Sin temple say their prayers in
the ‘kau cim’ tradition by shaking a cylinder containing
fortune-telling sticks.
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF
A GREAT MONARCH
There has never been a better example of a selfless and devoted public servant
than the late Queen Elizabeth II
With more years at the throne than any
other British monarch, Queen Elizabeth
II was regarded as a person of great
significance. In her role as Head of the
Commonwealth, which she served for 70
years, Her Majesty connected more than
two billion people around the world. Born
Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on 21
April 1926, her life transformed abruptly
from that of a young mother and naval
wife to one of a busy Head of State when
she succeeded to the throne at the age
of 25.
She would come to be known for her
sense of responsibility and commitment
to a life of service, and she was a crucial
head for the UK and the Commonwealth.
She was also the first female royal family
member to enlist in the armed forces
and serve in World War II. Starting with
Winston Churchill in 1952, 15 different
British prime ministers and numerous
other prime ministers served the Queen
during her reign. As Head of State, she
was also a diplomat and a hostess. Over
110 Presidents and Prime Ministers came
to the UK on official visits, and she was
there to welcome them.
Among her many duties, the Queen
regarded public and voluntary service
as among the most important. In her
capacity as Royal Patron or President, Her
Majesty maintained relationships with
more than 500 charities, professional
bodies, and public service organisations.
These organisations ranged from large,
well-known charities operating on a
global scale to more modest entities
operating in specialised fields or on a
purely local scale.
From youth empowerment to animal and
environmental preservation, the Queen’s
patronages and charities spanned it all.
Her Platinum Jubilee began on 6 February
2022, marking 70 years since she
ascended to the throne upon the death of
her father. On the night before the event,
she hosted a reception at Sandringham
House for pensioners, members of the
local Women’s Institute and volunteers
for charitable organisations. In the
statement that she delivered on the
occasion of her ascension, she reaffirmed
the promise that she had made in
1947 to devote her entire life to serving
the people.
Later that month, she experienced “mild
cold-like symptoms” and tested positive
for COVID-19, as did some members
of her household and employees. She
later recovered and resumed “light
duties”, ending concerns for her health.
Her Majesty never intended to abdicate,
though she engaged in fewer public
appearances as she aged and Prince
Charles (now King Charles) assumed
more of her duties. In a meeting with
Canadian governor general Adrienne
Clarkson in 2002, the Queen firmly stated
that she would never abdicate, saying “It
is not our tradition. Although, I suppose
if I became completely gaga, one would
have to do something.”
In June 2022, Her Majesty met with
Justin Welby, the Archbishop of
Canterbury, who “came away thinking
there is someone who has no fear of
death, has hope in the future, knows
the rock on which she stands and that
gives her strength.” On 8 September
2022, Buckingham Palace issued this
statement: “Following further evaluation
this morning, the Queen’s doctors are
concerned for Her Majesty’s health and
have recommended she remain under
medical supervision. The Queen remains
comfortable and at Balmoral Castle (in
Scotland).” She passed away on that
day at the age of 96 at 3.10 pm, with
two of her children Prince Charles and
Princess Anne by her side. Her Majesty’s
death certificate stated that she died of
old age.
Wing of TGCR, is suitable for both serious golfers
She adds that she and her family visit TGCR almost
every weekend to dine at either the Japanese,
Chinese, Korean or Italian restaurant. BigShot is
great for the whole family especially for birthdays
and family get-togethers, notes Tiara. “It's nice to
see families enjoying karaoke, watching live sports
together on our 10 giant screens, having fun on our
VR machines and multi-sports simulators. And it's
also really popular as a venue for corporate events
and team building!”

BigShot’s novel concept is available to both
TGCR members and the general public, and
it provides a “genuine golf” experience by
letting players review and analyse their shots.
“At BigShot, you can practise, coach or just
play golf whenever you choose on the PGA
course of your choice, no matter the weather.
You can choose from 100 of the world’s most
iconic courses including Pebble Beach, Augusta
Links or the Old Course at St Andrews, without
having to leave KL!” exclaims Dani Effendi,
who together with his father, former politician
Tan Sri Effendi Norwawi, established BigShot.
BigShot’s simulator bays and private suites are
both outfitted with the Bravo Golf system, which
is widely regarded as the best golf simulator
in the world owing to its superior visuals and
cutting-edge graphics of famous golf courses
across the globe.
Accuracy in tracking and measuring shots
is 99.99 percent thanks to its High-Speed
Dual Camera System and three-dimensional
monitoring. The Swing Analysis function tracks
the flight of the ball after each swing, displaying
data such as the shot’s distance, ball speed,
clubhead speed, trajectory and more. And, in
order to determine how well you are striking the
ball, you can use the Impact Analysis feature so
you can analyse your clubhead path with real
images all the way through the impact zone.
Plus, the dynamic sound and visuals, as well as
the varied weather settings, give the sensation
that you are actually playing on the course of
your dreams.
Effendi shares, “We’ve personally experienced
how our golf is transformed with the simulator,
because it is a very efficient way of improving
your game. With golf simulator technology, you
could playback your shot in slow-mo to see
exactly what your swing looked like, what needs
to be corrected and then work on that until you
get your shot right.” The best part about having
a golf simulator for him is the flexibility of fixing
time to play golf with Dani, outside their hectic
schedules. This allows them to spend time
together as a family while doing something they
both enjoy. “My ultimate hope for BigShot is
that it brings as much joy to as many people as
it has given me and my dad,” notes 23-year-old
Dani, who is currently pursuing his MBA at the
Malaysia University of Science and Technology
in Kota Damansara.
BigShot is a place that non-golfers may enjoy
as well. Football, frisbee, bowling, baseball,
foosball, disc golf, ice hockey and a shooting
game are just some of the games that can be
played on the venue’s multi-sport simulators.
Also available are American pool tables and
virtual reality (VR) machines. “I’m a big VR
enthusiast! I really wanted VR machines that will
transport you to the world of Tron: Legacy. So,
I personally chose the iconic Light Bike and VR
Racing Simulator as seen in the Tron movies, and
we also have the only Kat VR Omni Directional
Treadmill in KL. There are also two Oculus VR
bays featuring the most popular VR games like
Beat Saber, Super Hot VR, Arizona Sunshine
and Pavlov VR games,” says Dani, adding that
BigShot is designed to be fun for everyone, no
one gets left behind.
From his observation, apart from the golf
simulators, many who visit BigShot are drawn
toward the VR machines too because of how
exciting and engaging the experience is for
them. Like the rest of BigShot’s games, they’re
a blast to play and a great way to forget about
the stresses of daily life. Discover more at www.
THE ART OF
SCENT
Renowned French perfumer Francis
Kurkdjian grants Tropicana an exclusive
email interview in conjunction with the
launch of his latest fragrance, 724
80
Francis
Kurkdjian
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
T: What is your earliest memory of a scent or fragrance?
FK: “I have so many, from a very early age! Each member
of my family had a distinctive scent while I was growing
up that I still remember now. My grandfather’s aftershave
lotion that he mixed himself, using recipes I never
discovered. My grandmother was from a wealthy Armenian
family so wearing perfume was not considered as socially
acceptable. Nevertheless, I offered her Femme by Rochas,
her first perfume, which she would leave on my skin when
she covered me with kisses. My late mother had many
perfumes; she was very modern for her generation. She
used different fragrances depending on her mood. She
loved both very fresh creations such as Fidji by
Guy Laroche, First by Van Cleef & Arpels and
deep chypre notes like Mitsouko by Guerlain
or Empreinte by Courrèges. I also remember
the smell of the lobby of my grandparents’
apartment, the staircase, the cooking in the
kitchen, my grandmother’s pantry filled with
spices and salted grape leaves, and
the smell of over-ripe bananas!”
T: Who has most inspired your
career and why?
FK: “I decided that I wanted to be
a perfumer at a very young age,
thanks to an article about some
of the greatest perfumers of that
time. By far, the most memorable
mentors from the early days of
my journey as a perfumer were
Isabelle Doyen, the perfumer for
Annick Goutal, who taught and trained
us to smell natural and synthetic raw materials, along with
finished fragrances from the market. André Slagmulder, a
perfumer specialising in household products, who taught us
how to create single accords. Guy Robert, master perfumer
behind classics such as Equipage by Hermès, Madame by
Rochas, Dioressence and Gucci scents, and Sophie Labbé
from Givaudan, who would come and show us the newly
launched fragrances.”
T: What do you like most about being a perfumer?
FK: “Perfume is my means of creative expression, it’s the
way I tell stories to the world. Many people think creating
perfumes has something to do with chemistry. Being a
perfumer is not being a chemist. Painters are not chemists,
even though they play with colours. And I always say I am
not a “nose”. Do you call a pianist a “hand”, because they
use theirs hands to work and create their art? No, creating
a perfume is more about the grey matter, creativity,
inspiration; it is an emotional process as well as a creative
one. Being a perfumer is like acting. You are given a script
and you work with a team. As an actor, you can play in
romantic comedy, a thriller in a sci-fi movie or a biopic. At
some point, you may want to go behind the camera and
write your own story.”
T: When it comes to creating a scent, what is your greatest
source of inspiration?
FK: “My main sources of inspiration are culture, art, fashion,
couture and of course, people. The era we live in, and every
part of my own personal experiences translate into my vision.
I am a contemporary, urban perfumer, proud of my Parisian
roots and fond of big cities in constant motion that spawn
inspiring human relationships. I love human
interactions and cultural differences, they help
you to stay open minded, curious about things
and about others. This is very important to
me and that is why I find cities so inspiring.
Of course, I can engage in conversations with
our rose producers or bergamot harvesters,
but the urban living and society in
general are what inspires me the
most in creation. To be relevant, you
need to be connected to your time,
to the world around you. You must
be a chameleon and pay attention
to what is happening. Several of
my fragrances at Maison Francis
Kurkdjian were created with the
same approach. Our latest, 724, is
an example of that."
T: What distinguishes 724 from
your previous creations?
FK: “724 is a fresh and reassuring eau de parfum, even
sincere I would say. Its modernity lies in its sincerity. It gives
the sensation of being caressed with a form of infinity,
which elevates your spirit and feelings, making you feel like
anything is possible. 724 has this kind of optimism, a scent
that has the capacity to bring people together, which feels
especially good in this particular moment. It is not a scent
that captures the essence of a city though. It is the scent
that helps you to live in big cities. I wanted 724 to convey a
fresh scent of cleanness and purity, kind of a cocoon in a way.
724 is like a protection in the city, the sensation you want
to feel when you walk around the city that keeps you away
from stress and daily troubles. It is a musky floral perfume,
composed of three main accords. A fresh urban accord as
top notes, carried by aldehydes and bergamot oil from Italy.
This accord is very luminous and slightly metallic. Then in
the middle notes you’ll find a floral white accord, driven by
white flowers and jasmine absolute from Egypt. Finally, the
base notes release something very sweet, even cosy. I call
it “comfortable cotton” accord as it feels reassuring to me.”
ADVERTORIAL
ACER’S EARTH MISSION
The key to sustainability and long-term growth is through
continuous evolution and lifestyle changes
Progressive global development has left the planet weaker
and environmental issues have become increasingly
pressing. As such, Acer recognises that concerted actions
are necessary to make the difference. The top global ICT
company is urging more partners and suppliers to join
forces in its Earthion mission in finding solutions to sustain
the planet and its valuable resources.
Earthion was launched in 2021 to bring eco-friendly
initiatives into Acer’s supply chain ecosystem where the
primary focus is on energy, product design, packaging
design, production, logistics, and recycling. The mission
marks Acer’s commitment to supporting a more
sustainable future by offering consumers, businesses and
institutions options to reduce their ecological footprint.
Products borne from the Earthion platform carry the ecominded
Vero name.
The first Vero, the Aspire Vero laptop, is built with 30%
post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in the chassis and
50% PCR plastic in the keyboard caps to reduce pollution
from the production of virgin plastic and waste. The device
was also designed to simplify the process of repairs or
upgrades to extend their lifespan, without compromising
computing performance and quality.
The new Aspire Vero’s packaging has also been reimagined
to cover multiple product lines, device sizes and packing
EASY, TASTY
YEE SANG
Chinese New Year is incomplete without yee sang, and we
have the right recipe for you to try
It’s that time of year again, when everyone whips out their chopsticks and tosses yee sang as high as they can
in the hopes of catching some of the luck they deserve. A staple during Chinese New Year, this festive dish is
a representation of prosperity and all-things auspicious. When having yee sang, which is essentially a salad of
pickled and raw vegetables, and raw fish liberally seasoned with sauces and condiments, it is customary to toss
the ingredients in the air while shouting ‘lo hei’, which literally translates to ‘move upwards’. This symbolises
the diners’ wish for a prosperous and fruitful new year. Typically served as an appetiser prior to the main
course on any day during the Chinese New Year period, you can purchase pre-made yee sang packs but where
is the joy in that when you can make your own? While there are different types of yee sang, you can try your
hand at making this simple version instead.
INGREDIENTS
4 carrots
½ purple cabbage
2 cucumbers
1 white radish
3 tbsp chopped coriander
½ cup pomelo sacs
250g seaweed
300g smoked salmon or fresh salmon (sashimi)
¼ cup thinly sliced pickled ginger
2 teaspoons lime juice
6-7 sheets wonton skin
Oil for shallow frying
4 tbs plum sauce
1 tbs hoisin sauce
1 tbs sesame seeds
2 tbs peanuts
A few drops of sesame oil
PREPARATION
Shred the cucumbers, carrots, purple cabbage and
white radish, and scatter them around the edge of
a large serving platter. The seaweed should be
added alongside the shredded veggies. Spread the
chopped coriander, pickled ginger, pomelo sacs and
lime juice all over the platter. As for the smoked or
sashimi salmon, slice them and place in the middle
of the platter.
WONTON CHIPS
Fry the wonton skins in oil over medium heat in a
frying pan until they are golden brown. Remove any
excess oil and gently crush them to create chips.
DRESSING
Pour the hoisin sauce, plum sauce and sesame
oil into a bowl, and stir until well combined. Add
1 tablespoon or more of hot water and stir until
desired consistency is achieved. Add salt to taste.
TO SERVE
When it’s time to serve, sprinkle the wonton chips,
sesame seeds and peanuts over the salad, and
drizzle the sauce on top.
BRING BACK
THE SPARK
This Valentine’s Day, feel free to buy chocolates or flowers.
But remember, it’s experiences, not possessions, that keep
the flame of love alive
RECREATE THAT DATE
Relive your most memorable date. It doesn’t
matter if it was the first time you went out
together or the date where you realised you were
in love with each other; both are great options.
If you are unable to dine at the same restaurant
or at the same place, try coming up with some
inventive ways to prepare the same meal at home.
INDOOR PICNIC
Lay back on the plush carpet in your living room
with champagne and an assortment of delightful
nibbles. A bright picnic blanket, an elegant wicker
basket, fancy cutlery and fresh flowers will help
set the mood. The change from your usual routine
will make the whole experience feel special and
unforgettable.
CASUAL BUT SPECIAL
A night out at a pub or bar with an activity like
karaoke might provide a relaxed setting for you
and your partner to be physically close without
taking yourselves too seriously. You can take the
date to the next level by sneakily asking for a
romantic duet or ‘your song’ to be played. That
way, you and your partner will always remember
your celebration of love for him or her as it is
extra special and memorable.
DO SOMETHING NEW
New experiences are always exciting. Go on
adventures together; maybe a trek in the hills,
dine at a new, faraway restaurant or the secret
placement of a love note in his pocket or her
handbag. The constant stimulation of the brain’s
reward circuits and the release of dopamine from
these experiences is what keeps the fire burning.
ENROL IN A DANCE CLASS
When you and your lover learn to dance, or at
least make an effort to learn to dance, you will
definitely develop a deeper sense of intimacy.
Even if you and your partner don’t end up
being dance pros, you are guaranteed to have a
great time together. After all, dancing increases
endorphins, which induces happiness.
SAY IT RIGHT
To reignite the flame of love, words are just as
important as physical contact. Our choice of
words has the potential to transform the situation
for the better. According to experts, partners
should communicate with one another using
straightforward expressions of affection and
gratitude, such as “I love you”, “I miss you” and
“thank you”. And in order to strengthen your
relationship, you need to be honest when you talk
and listen to one another.
GET FLIRTY!
To ease into the process of rekindling, which may
feel awkward or forced at first, try flirting more
frequently with your spouse. Recall the beginning of
your relationship. What were some of the flirtatious
moves you made to make the other person laugh
and show interest? Give it another shot. Include
physical contact and compliments.
STAYCATION
Staycations are an affordable alternative to
traditional vacations that nonetheless provide a
welcome break from daily life. Try having breakfast
in bed, turning your living room into a movie
theatre or taking a relaxing bath with your loved
one while enjoying the aroma of bath bombs and
scented candles.
WILD ABOUT
DIGITAL ART
Through her artwork, Rachel Gray enchants us by
capturing the beauty of untamed creatures
106
Observing animals in their natural environment
is something Rachel Gray finds magical, and she
strives to share her experience with the world
through her artwork. “To raise awareness of the
sadly critically endangered whilst sharing the joy of
these magnificent animals is truly enchanting,” says
Rachel, who specialises in digital art, specifically
wildlife portraiture. As an artist, she considers
her crowning achievement to be able to observe
wildlife in their natural habitat. “Seeing orangutans
chilling in the canopy, hearing gibbons calling to
each other as the sun sets, watching African wild
dogs start their day, sitting in the back of a pickup
truck photographing cheetahs sprinting across the
plains at full speed are all memories I will never
forget.”
In terms of project, she says representing Malaysia
at the EXPO Dubai 2020 with her ‘Below The
Canopy’ programme was one of her proudest
moments. Rachel, who has a BA in Illustration
& Animation and a Postgraduate Certificate
in Education, specialising in the arts in postcompulsory
education, notes that there are many
challenges in her job. “It’s all on the animals’ terms
(naturally) so it’s very much up to them how
long they stick around for. Sometimes I only get
a glimpse, other times I really get to soak them
up. There are so many challenges now that I think
about it. Getting the eyes right when painting, if
your eyes are off then you may as well start again.
Trying to see the animals in their natural habitat,
even when that involves dealing with leeches,
snakes and spiders. Then trying to convey
the character of the animal onto canvas, truly
attempting to share a moment of wilderness
with the world. To get the portraits in front of an
audience whilst trying to raise awareness of these
majestic creatures, sometimes an audience might
have never seen a proboscis monkey before, some
may not see digital art as a serious art form - I
could go on and on.”
Rachel, who hails from the UK, enjoys both
conventional and digital art forms, and she explains
the differences. “I strongly believe you need the
fundamental traditional art skills in order to excel
as a digital artist. The idea that the computer or
Photoshop does it all for you is just not true. I can
spend over 200 hours on a portrait and that’s
without my wildlife photography and preliminary
sketches. Pros and cons come with everything. I
think as an artist you need to find what works for
you and learn that it’s okay to explore.” Being an
artist is demanding regardless whether you’re a
sculptor, traditional or digital artist, says Rachel.
“You’ve really got to put in the work and make
the magic happen and that’s difficult when
you don’t know which the right avenue is to
adventure down. There is no career ladder, no
set promotions, sick days or holiday pay. No
assistants, distributors, social media managers,
marketing teams or set work hours. It is a risky
career, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!”
This year looks set to be a busy one for Rachel.
“Come March is my solo exhibition in Berlin with
MATTA (Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel
Agents) for the ITB (Internationale Tourismus
Borse) Expo, and I also have a Southeast Asia tour
with the Namibian High Commission. There are
many things happening, so be sure to check out
my YouTube channel (Rachel_Gray) or my website
(www.rgportraits.com).”

Joi's deodorant
JOI
Have you ever wondered about the
ingredients that go into your products? Well,
the people of Joi did their research, and
they found out the nasty truth: parabens,
phthalates and aluminiums are all harmful to
your health. That is what got them started on
a goal to produce clean, safe and effective
products with 100% natural ingredients, free
from dangerous chemicals that function just
as well, if not better, than other products
available on the market today. Their first
product came about for personal reasons.
They have always had trouble finding
deodorants that could make them smell
fresh since they are “heavy sweaters”. They
finally found solutions to their issues
after months of conducting research and
learning through trial and error. They
were successful in producing a deodorant
that was created entirely from natural
ingredients, which truly worked. They
then asked themselves, “Why stop there?”
“We were still using other products with
potentially health-harming ingredients. So
we got to work and formulated our own
shower gel, and have a few more products
in the pipeline.” Currently, Joi’s products
include a range of skincare items like
cleanser, toner, sunscreen, face oil, face
serum and more.
playing golf or just taking a stroll around the resort’s gorgeous grounds, you’re almost
certain to come across some beautiful birds and hear their many different sounds, from
gentle chirps to delightful whistles. The calls and colours of these birds make visiting
TGCR even more exciting, in addition to the already amazing golf course, restaurants
and other attractions that the resort has to offer.
The Oriental Magpie-Robin can often be heard chirping joyfully near the Golfers Lounge
and Twenty7 Restaurant, while the Zebra Dove and Long-Billed Pipit will delight your
ears with their chorus out on the fairways. The resort is also a good place to observe
the Little Egret, Mangrove Heron, Painted Stork, Eastern Great Egret and Barn Swallow,
the most abundant and widely distributed swallow species in the world. The Kingfisher
with its brilliantly bright plumage can also be spotted at TGCR, particularly near the Red
Flame trees on East Course 1 Hole 4 and elsewhere around the course.
You can also see a flock of the Asian Openbill Stork on the expanse of land that extends
from West Course Holes 12 to 15 as they wander around the fairways and greens in the
morning light. East Course Holes 1 Holes 4 and 5, and East Course 2 Hole 11 are also
popular resting spots for these avian travellers. Some of these feathered beauties can
be seen along the lakes where they hunt for food like fish and insects. In fact, if you
are lucky, you could even get to witness the majestic Brahminy Kite in full predator
mode as it soars over a lake in search of fish to devour. Another migratory species that
is common to the Tropicana area is the Oriental Honey Buzzard, which travels long
animal life, bird species such as the Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Rufous Woodpecker,
Striated Heron as well as a flock of Asian Glossy Starlings have nesting grounds within
the resort. This demonstrates how well-balanced the ecosystem is at TGCR.
MC20
RACES INTO THE
FUTURE
The Maserati MC20 is a super sports car in terms of looks
116
The new Maserati MC20 is a feat of engineering and design
that ushers in a new era for the brand. MC20, which stands
for Maserati Corse 2020 (“Maserati Racing 2020”) celebrates
the brand’s racing comeback featuring the Nettuno engine, a
630 horsepower V6 with torque of 730 Nm that delivers 0-100
km/h acceleration in under 2.9 seconds and a top speed of
over 325 km an hour. To maintain emissions compliance, an
automatic transmission of 8-speed oil-immersed Dual Clutch
design with 6 power and two overdrive speeds is utilised. The
engine signals Maserati’s return to producing its own power
units after a more than 20-year absence.
The MC20 is extraordinarily lightweight with under 1,500 kg
(kerb weight) and the best in class in weight/power ratio,
at just 2.33 kg/hp, thanks to its 630 hp power output. This
record was set by using high-quality materials and fully using
the capabilities of carbon fibre without sacrificing comfort. Its
design was inspired by the heritage of the brand itself, with all
the class, power and comfort that has always been a part of
the Maserati DNA.

Every part serves a function and is designed with the driver
in mind. Forms are simple, with few sharp edges and little
minimalistic in design with just a few features: the wireless
smartphone charger, the driving mode selector (GT, Wet,
