could change. That’s why, in addition to setting solid goals that we aim to achieve, it’s also wise to

In this season of giving and sharing, Tropicana Corporation Berhad 

continued with its annual charity drive, the Buggy of Joy, to collect 

dry goods and cash for underprivileged homes across the Klang 

Valley. Returning for the third consecutive year, this initiative held 

at Tropicana Gardens Mall, is organised by Tropicana Foundation, 

the charity arm of Tropicana. 

Dion Tan, Group Managing Director of Tropicana said in keeping 

with Tropicana’s mantra of Redefining the Art of Living and Caring, 

this initiative will see proceeds of the charity drive channelled to 

over 15 homes. He added that Tropicana staff from more than 16 

divisions have supported the charity drive. 

“Every year, we organise the Buggy of Joy charity drive to 

encourage the community to get involved and put a smile on the 

faces of those in need. This year, we started earlier in the hope of 

collecting more donation to help support and sustain these charity 

homes. The rising cost of living will affect the underprivileged even 

more, so every little bit helps make a difference,” he said. 

Apart from the generosity of Tropicana’s staff, the donation drive 

also saw the public contributing to the Buggy of Joy. The Buggy, 

which was located near the Customer Service Counter at Centre 

Court, Tropicana Gardens Mall, was constantly filled with dry goods 

such as rice, noodles, biscuits, milk powder, Milo and halal canned 

food. There were also healthcare products and cooking essentials. 

This year, the Foundation managed to collect more than 

RM10,000 worth of dry goods for the homes. For those who are

LANGKAWI AND PERHENTIAN 

SPORTS EVENTS 

In a joint effort to support the Art of Healthy Living, Tropicana 

and its charity arm, Tropicana Foundation, has established the 

Tropicana Elite team based on the aspiration to encourage 

all Tropicana employees to stay active and healthy. In October 

and November 2022, the Tropicana Elite team ventured into the 

thrilling world of competitive sports by participating and securing 

podium positions in the country’s two biggest events, IRONMAN 

70.3 Langkawi and Perhentian Island Challenge 2022. In the two 

races, the Tropicana Elite teams were led by Janice Wan Chin Wei, 

49, Executive Secretary at Tropicana. Janice explained that her 

love for triathlons allowed her to push her boundaries. “If you 

never tri [sic], you never know. I wanted to know what I can do. 

For me, it is a sense of personal achievement. Happy to participate 

and support the good cause of saving the ocean.” 

Jaren Ethan Ang, Group Executive Director of Tropicana, shared 

that the Group’s support for the Tropicana Elite Team further 

drives home the message of Redefining the Art of Healthy 

Living. “In backing our very capable athletes, we are not just 

advocating a healthier lifestyle for all, we would like for our 

people to strive for a work-life balance by incorporating leisurely 

and sporting activities into their everyday lives. Prioritising our 

employees’ well-being allows us to build a happy and more 

fulfilled workforce,” he said. 

At the Perhentian Island Challenge on 1 October 2022, Janice 

took part in the Team 16km event with Nadimah Khairuddin, 

Choo Jer Lyn and Cindy Sui to secure the first runner-up 

position. For IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi on 5 November 2022, 

Janice participated with Loh Chooi Fei and Han Yuet Mei. Calling 

themselves the Tropicana Iron Lady, the triathletes secured 

podium position, finishing second in 5 hours 32 minutes 19 

seconds. The course here started with a 1.9km swim at Pantai 

Kok before the athletes jumped on their bicycles for a 90km loop 

around Langkawi and finally a 21.1km run along the Langkawi 

International Airport runway to finish at Pantai Cenang.

Tropicana Corporation Berhad hosted The Grand Race over the weekend as the rousing finale 

to wrap up its long-running health campaign, Tropicana go-go-FIT. The Grand Race was held 

at Tropicana Grandhill, Genting Highlands, drawing crowds of fitness enthusiasts, fun-seekers 

and guests in teams of three to compete in 10 exhilarating challenges against the backdrop of 

Genting Highlands’ breathtaking scenery and cool morning breezes. Winners took home cash 

and lucky draw prizes worth more than RM20,000. 

The adventure race concluded Tropicana go-go-FIT, launched in April 2022 in line with 

Tropicana’s focus on Redefining the Art of Healthy Living. Joanne Lee, Deputy Chief Executive 

Officer of Tropicana, shared how pleased Tropicana was to host the event at Tropicana Grandhill, 

citing rising interest in tourist hotspots such as Genting Highlands.

The merriment began with invigorating warm-up exercises led by 

fitness personality Linora Low amid Genting Highlands’ bracing 

morning mist and soothing zephyrs, preparing participants for the 

10 challenges ahead. These ranged from scavenger hunts across 

well-known Genting Highlands hotspots such as Chin Swee Temple 

and Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, to physical challenges 

like cycling to blend strawberries at the Genting Strawberry Leisure 

Farms and a teh tarik station inviting participants to try their hand 

at making Malaysia’s celebrated beverage. 

Each team received a wristband for successfully completing a 

challenge, with the first teams to present their wristbands together 

as a team at the finishing checkpoint announced as winners. In 

addition, teams received two “life lines” which could be used to 

skip a challenge in return for a penalty time of 10 minutes. 

In addition to the cash prizes of RM10,000, RM5,000 and 

RM3,000 for the first place winner and two runners-up, The 

Grand Race offered lucky draw prizes such as Shimono pressure 

cookers, a cordless vacuum, and air circulator, as well as 

BlackBixon coffee machines. 

The adventure race highlighted the generous open spaces and 

connectivity in and around Tropicana Grandhill, envisioned as 

a 112-acre wholesome and holistic city with evergreen lifestyle 

offerings such as a planned wellness hub and silver hair village.

PADS FOR PETS 

While there are many adorable pet houses available, including bespoke 

options, there are other aspects to consider 

Those who have pets will understand how much of a 

part animals play in the household dynamic. Our pets 

are members of our extended family, essential to our 

happiness, and they are certainly irreplaceable. And 

yet, as much as our pets enjoy our company, they 

also need their own space. Pet houses designed 

specifically for pets provide a warm, private haven 

for them to rest in occasionally. If and when they get 

tired of us, they can always retreat to the comfort 

of their little dwelling. Usually, only cats and dogs 

require their own abode. While there is a variety of 

cute pet homes as well as custom-made ones (think 

Paris Hilton’s two-storey mini mansion for her little 

dogs), there are other important factors to consider.

For instance, according to Susanne Hellman 

Holmstrom, the first cat psychologist in Sweden, 

cats have specific needs beyond the basics when it 

comes to their living quarters. As cats spend most 

of their time indoors, the requirements for their own 

home include a place to scratch, play and clean their 

fur. Based on these needs, Susanne teamed up with 

interior designer Eleonor Moschevitz to construct 

the Cat Flat. It resembles a wooden storage cabinet 

fitted with angled vertical slats to give it height and 

features three levels with interesting components 

and toys for kitties. Suffice to say, our feline friends 

deserve a home that’s part playground and part 

home. 

Dogs have slightly different requirements. Some 

dogs become overwhelmed by visitors or other 

animals, so an indoor dog house can provide 

them with a secure place to hide out when they 

feel scared or unsafe. When you think of outdoor 

dog houses, the first thing that springs to mind is 

protection because many dog breeds are weathersensitive. 

Harsh weather (extreme cold or heat) will 

eventually take its toll on even tough dogs. Outdoor 

dog houses should be positioned above ground to 

allow for ventilation and painted in a light colour to 

reflect heat from the sun. It must also be high and 

spacious enough to enable the dog to fully stand up 

and wander about in it.

debut in September, are being developed over 93 and 75 

hectares, respectively. The T&T Group, a privately owned 

Vietnamese conglomerate with interests in the electrical

Vietnam is the ideal spot for golf course designers to make

A GREAT MONARCH 

There has never been a better example of a selfless and devoted public servant 

than the late Queen Elizabeth II 

With more years at the throne than any 

other British monarch, Queen Elizabeth 

II was regarded as a person of great 

significance. In her role as Head of the 

Commonwealth, which she served for 70 

years, Her Majesty connected more than 

two billion people around the world. Born 

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on 21 

April 1926, her life transformed abruptly 

from that of a young mother and naval 

wife to one of a busy Head of State when 

she succeeded to the throne at the age 

of 25. 

She would come to be known for her 

sense of responsibility and commitment 

to a life of service, and she was a crucial 

head for the UK and the Commonwealth. 

She was also the first female royal family 

member to enlist in the armed forces 

and serve in World War II. Starting with 

Winston Churchill in 1952, 15 different 

British prime ministers and numerous 

other prime ministers served the Queen 

during her reign. As Head of State, she 

was also a diplomat and a hostess. Over 

110 Presidents and Prime Ministers came 

to the UK on official visits, and she was 

there to welcome them. 

Among her many duties, the Queen 

regarded public and voluntary service 

as among the most important. In her 

capacity as Royal Patron or President, Her 

Majesty maintained relationships with 

more than 500 charities, professional 

bodies, and public service organisations. 

These organisations ranged from large, 

well-known charities operating on a 

global scale to more modest entities 

operating in specialised fields or on a 

purely local scale. 

From youth empowerment to animal and 

environmental preservation, the Queen’s 

patronages and charities spanned it all. 

Her Platinum Jubilee began on 6 February 

2022, marking 70 years since she 

ascended to the throne upon the death of 

her father. On the night before the event, 

she hosted a reception at Sandringham 

House for pensioners, members of the 

local Women’s Institute and volunteers 

for charitable organisations. In the 

statement that she delivered on the 

occasion of her ascension, she reaffirmed 

the promise that she had made in 

1947 to devote her entire life to serving 

the people. 

Later that month, she experienced “mild 

cold-like symptoms” and tested positive 

for COVID-19, as did some members 

of her household and employees. She 

later recovered and resumed “light 

duties”, ending concerns for her health. 

Her Majesty never intended to abdicate, 

though she engaged in fewer public 

appearances as she aged and Prince 

Charles (now King Charles) assumed 

more of her duties. In a meeting with 

Canadian governor general Adrienne 

Clarkson in 2002, the Queen firmly stated 

that she would never abdicate, saying “It 

is not our tradition. Although, I suppose 

if I became completely gaga, one would 

have to do something.” 

In June 2022, Her Majesty met with 

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of 

Canterbury, who “came away thinking 

there is someone who has no fear of 

death, has hope in the future, knows 

the rock on which she stands and that 

gives her strength.” On 8 September 

2022, Buckingham Palace issued this 

statement: “Following further evaluation 

this morning, the Queen’s doctors are 

concerned for Her Majesty’s health and 

have recommended she remain under 

medical supervision. The Queen remains 

comfortable and at Balmoral Castle (in 

Scotland).” She passed away on that 

day at the age of 96 at 3.10 pm, with 

two of her children Prince Charles and 

Princess Anne by her side. Her Majesty’s 

death certificate stated that she died of 

old age.

T: What is your earliest memory of a scent or fragrance? 

FK: “I have so many, from a very early age! Each member 

of my family had a distinctive scent while I was growing 

up that I still remember now. My grandfather’s aftershave 

lotion that he mixed himself, using recipes I never 

discovered. My grandmother was from a wealthy Armenian 

family so wearing perfume was not considered as socially 

acceptable. Nevertheless, I offered her Femme by Rochas, 

her first perfume, which she would leave on my skin when 

she covered me with kisses. My late mother had many 

perfumes; she was very modern for her generation. She 

used different fragrances depending on her mood. She 

loved both very fresh creations such as Fidji by 

Guy Laroche, First by Van Cleef & Arpels and 

deep chypre notes like Mitsouko by Guerlain 

or Empreinte by Courrèges. I also remember 

the smell of the lobby of my grandparents’ 

apartment, the staircase, the cooking in the 

kitchen, my grandmother’s pantry filled with 

spices and salted grape leaves, and 

the smell of over-ripe bananas!” 

T: Who has most inspired your 

career and why? 

FK: “I decided that I wanted to be 

a perfumer at a very young age, 

thanks to an article about some 

of the greatest perfumers of that 

time. By far, the most memorable 

mentors from the early days of 

my journey as a perfumer were 

Isabelle Doyen, the perfumer for 

Annick Goutal, who taught and trained 

us to smell natural and synthetic raw materials, along with 

finished fragrances from the market. André Slagmulder, a 

perfumer specialising in household products, who taught us 

how to create single accords. Guy Robert, master perfumer 

behind classics such as Equipage by Hermès, Madame by 

Rochas, Dioressence and Gucci scents, and Sophie Labbé 

from Givaudan, who would come and show us the newly 

launched fragrances.” 

T: What do you like most about being a perfumer? 

FK: “Perfume is my means of creative expression, it’s the 

way I tell stories to the world. Many people think creating 

perfumes has something to do with chemistry. Being a 

perfumer is not being a chemist. Painters are not chemists, 

even though they play with colours. And I always say I am 

not a “nose”. Do you call a pianist a “hand”, because they 

use theirs hands to work and create their art? No, creating 

a perfume is more about the grey matter, creativity, 

inspiration; it is an emotional process as well as a creative 

one. Being a perfumer is like acting. You are given a script 

and you work with a team. As an actor, you can play in 

romantic comedy, a thriller in a sci-fi movie or a biopic. At 

some point, you may want to go behind the camera and 

write your own story.” 

T: When it comes to creating a scent, what is your greatest 

source of inspiration? 

FK: “My main sources of inspiration are culture, art, fashion, 

couture and of course, people. The era we live in, and every 

part of my own personal experiences translate into my vision. 

I am a contemporary, urban perfumer, proud of my Parisian 

roots and fond of big cities in constant motion that spawn 

inspiring human relationships. I love human 

interactions and cultural differences, they help 

you to stay open minded, curious about things 

and about others. This is very important to 

me and that is why I find cities so inspiring. 

Of course, I can engage in conversations with 

our rose producers or bergamot harvesters, 

but the urban living and society in 

general are what inspires me the 

most in creation. To be relevant, you 

need to be connected to your time, 

to the world around you. You must 

be a chameleon and pay attention 

to what is happening. Several of 

my fragrances at Maison Francis 

Kurkdjian were created with the 

same approach. Our latest, 724, is 

an example of that." 

T: What distinguishes 724 from 

your previous creations? 

FK: “724 is a fresh and reassuring eau de parfum, even 

sincere I would say. Its modernity lies in its sincerity. It gives 

the sensation of being caressed with a form of infinity, 

which elevates your spirit and feelings, making you feel like 

anything is possible. 724 has this kind of optimism, a scent 

that has the capacity to bring people together, which feels 

especially good in this particular moment. It is not a scent 

that captures the essence of a city though. It is the scent 

that helps you to live in big cities. I wanted 724 to convey a 

fresh scent of cleanness and purity, kind of a cocoon in a way. 

724 is like a protection in the city, the sensation you want 

to feel when you walk around the city that keeps you away 

from stress and daily troubles. It is a musky floral perfume, 

composed of three main accords. A fresh urban accord as 

top notes, carried by aldehydes and bergamot oil from Italy. 

This accord is very luminous and slightly metallic. Then in 

the middle notes you’ll find a floral white accord, driven by 

white flowers and jasmine absolute from Egypt. Finally, the 

base notes release something very sweet, even cosy. I call 

it “comfortable cotton” accord as it feels reassuring to me.”

years were split between Sandakan in Sabah 

where he comes from, and Melbourne, 

Australia. He started his fashion education 

at the esteemed Royal Melbourne Institute 

of Technology (RMIT) and then he 

continued his final years at ESMOD (École 

supérieure des arts et techniques de la 

mode) in Paris, where he received the Best

was also designed to simplify the process of repairs or 

upgrades to extend their lifespan, without compromising 

computing performance and quality. 

The new Aspire Vero’s packaging has also been reimagined 

to cover multiple product lines, device sizes and packing 

components. A recipient of the Red Dot Brands & 

Communication Design awards for packaging design, the 

outer box is made from 80 to 85% recycled paper pulp, 

and plastic bagging is reduced by using recycled paper 

sleeves instead. The laptop bag and the sheet between the 

keyboard are made with 100% recycled PET (polyethylene 

terephthalate), and the remaining packaging is 100% 

recyclable with its inner partition even reusable. Users 

need just a few extra steps to turn it into an adjustable

to 30% PCR plastic content across its core products by

EASY, TASTY 

YEE SANG 

Chinese New Year is incomplete without yee sang, and we 

have the right recipe for you to try 

It’s that time of year again, when everyone whips out their chopsticks and tosses yee sang as high as they can 

in the hopes of catching some of the luck they deserve. A staple during Chinese New Year, this festive dish is 

a representation of prosperity and all-things auspicious. When having yee sang, which is essentially a salad of 

pickled and raw vegetables, and raw fish liberally seasoned with sauces and condiments, it is customary to toss 

the ingredients in the air while shouting ‘lo hei’, which literally translates to ‘move upwards’. This symbolises 

the diners’ wish for a prosperous and fruitful new year. Typically served as an appetiser prior to the main 

course on any day during the Chinese New Year period, you can purchase pre-made yee sang packs but where 

is the joy in that when you can make your own? While there are different types of yee sang, you can try your 

hand at making this simple version instead. 

INGREDIENTS 

4 carrots 

½ purple cabbage 

2 cucumbers 

1 white radish 

3 tbsp chopped coriander 

½ cup pomelo sacs 

250g seaweed 

300g smoked salmon or fresh salmon (sashimi) 

¼ cup thinly sliced pickled ginger 

2 teaspoons lime juice 

6-7 sheets wonton skin 

Oil for shallow frying 

4 tbs plum sauce 

1 tbs hoisin sauce 

1 tbs sesame seeds 

2 tbs peanuts 

A few drops of sesame oil 

PREPARATION 

Shred the cucumbers, carrots, purple cabbage and 

white radish, and scatter them around the edge of 

a large serving platter. The seaweed should be 

added alongside the shredded veggies. Spread the 

chopped coriander, pickled ginger, pomelo sacs and 

lime juice all over the platter. As for the smoked or 

sashimi salmon, slice them and place in the middle 

of the platter. 

WONTON CHIPS 

Fry the wonton skins in oil over medium heat in a 

frying pan until they are golden brown. Remove any 

excess oil and gently crush them to create chips. 

DRESSING 

Pour the hoisin sauce, plum sauce and sesame 

oil into a bowl, and stir until well combined. Add 

1 tablespoon or more of hot water and stir until 

desired consistency is achieved. Add salt to taste. 

TO SERVE 

When it’s time to serve, sprinkle the wonton chips, 

sesame seeds and peanuts over the salad, and 

drizzle the sauce on top.

Through her artwork, Rachel Gray enchants us by 

capturing the beauty of untamed creatures

Observing animals in their natural environment 

is something Rachel Gray finds magical, and she 

strives to share her experience with the world 

through her artwork. “To raise awareness of the 

sadly critically endangered whilst sharing the joy of 

these magnificent animals is truly enchanting,” says 

Rachel, who specialises in digital art, specifically 

wildlife portraiture. As an artist, she considers 

her crowning achievement to be able to observe 

wildlife in their natural habitat. “Seeing orangutans 

chilling in the canopy, hearing gibbons calling to 

each other as the sun sets, watching African wild 

dogs start their day, sitting in the back of a pickup 

truck photographing cheetahs sprinting across the 

plains at full speed are all memories I will never 

forget.” 

In terms of project, she says representing Malaysia 

at the EXPO Dubai 2020 with her ‘Below The 

Canopy’ programme was one of her proudest 

moments. Rachel, who has a BA in Illustration 

& Animation and a Postgraduate Certificate 

in Education, specialising in the arts in postcompulsory 

education, notes that there are many 

challenges in her job. “It’s all on the animals’ terms 

(naturally) so it’s very much up to them how 

long they stick around for. Sometimes I only get 

a glimpse, other times I really get to soak them 

up. There are so many challenges now that I think 

about it. Getting the eyes right when painting, if 

your eyes are off then you may as well start again. 

Trying to see the animals in their natural habitat, 

even when that involves dealing with leeches, 

snakes and spiders. Then trying to convey 

the character of the animal onto canvas, truly 

attempting to share a moment of wilderness 

with the world. To get the portraits in front of an 

audience whilst trying to raise awareness of these 

majestic creatures, sometimes an audience might 

have never seen a proboscis monkey before, some 

may not see digital art as a serious art form - I 

could go on and on.” 

Rachel, who hails from the UK, enjoys both 

conventional and digital art forms, and she explains 

the differences. “I strongly believe you need the 

fundamental traditional art skills in order to excel 

as a digital artist. The idea that the computer or 

Photoshop does it all for you is just not true. I can 

spend over 200 hours on a portrait and that’s 

without my wildlife photography and preliminary 

sketches. Pros and cons come with everything. I 

think as an artist you need to find what works for 

you and learn that it’s okay to explore.” Being an 

artist is demanding regardless whether you’re a

“You’ve really got to put in the work and make 

the magic happen and that’s difficult when 

you don’t know which the right avenue is to 

adventure down. There is no career ladder, no 

set promotions, sick days or holiday pay. No 

assistants, distributors, social media managers, 

marketing teams or set work hours. It is a risky 

career, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!” 

This year looks set to be a busy one for Rachel. 

“Come March is my solo exhibition in Berlin with 

MATTA (Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel 

Agents) for the ITB (Internationale Tourismus 

Borse) Expo, and I also have a Southeast Asia tour 

with the Namibian High Commission. There are

the people of Joi did their research, and 

they found out the nasty truth: parabens,

product came about for personal reasons.

THE HIVE 

The Hive Bulk Foods is Malaysia’s first zerowaste 

store, selling everything from bulk whole 

foods and cleaning products to eco-friendly 

personal care and lifestyle items. Zero-waste

the environment, and adoption of sustainable 

business strategies earned it a United Nations

THE MINERAW 

The connection to the earth, a love for nature 

and the human body are the sources of 

inspiration for The Mineraw. It is dedicated 

to offering skin-safe beauty products that 

are simple, gentle and clean. “All products 

are safely tested on friends and family, never 

on animals. Our mindful products are vegan, 

vegetarian and cruelty-free; suitable for 

all skin types, concerns and gender. They 

are free from synthetic fragrances, artificial 

colorants, parabens, phthalates, sulphfates, 

cortisones, alcohols, silicones, formaldehyde, 

petrochemicals, mineral oils and talc,” says its 

founder, Jidienne Ibanez. The first products 

she launched (Glow Serum Face Oil, Toner

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (TGCR), which covers 625 acres, sustains a rich plant

gentle chirps to delightful whistles. The calls and colours of these birds make visiting

The Oriental Magpie-Robin can often be heard chirping joyfully near the Golfers Lounge 

and Twenty7 Restaurant, while the Zebra Dove and Long-Billed Pipit will delight your 

ears with their chorus out on the fairways. The resort is also a good place to observe 

the Little Egret, Mangrove Heron, Painted Stork, Eastern Great Egret and Barn Swallow, 

the most abundant and widely distributed swallow species in the world. The Kingfisher 

with its brilliantly bright plumage can also be spotted at TGCR, particularly near the Red 

Flame trees on East Course 1 Hole 4 and elsewhere around the course. 

You can also see a flock of the Asian Openbill Stork on the expanse of land that extends 

from West Course Holes 12 to 15 as they wander around the fairways and greens in the 

morning light. East Course Holes 1 Holes 4 and 5, and East Course 2 Hole 11 are also 

popular resting spots for these avian travellers. Some of these feathered beauties can 

be seen along the lakes where they hunt for food like fish and insects. In fact, if you 

are lucky, you could even get to witness the majestic Brahminy Kite in full predator 

mode as it soars over a lake in search of fish to devour. Another migratory species that 

is common to the Tropicana area is the Oriental Honey Buzzard, which travels long 

distances from Siberia all the way to Indonesia! Thanks to the abundance of plant and 

animal life, bird species such as the Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Rufous Woodpecker, 

Striated Heron as well as a flock of Asian Glossy Starlings have nesting grounds within 

the resort. This demonstrates how well-balanced the ecosystem is at TGCR.
