Mixed Methods Research in Education
Description of the activity
Learning Activity 4
At this point, you have identified the topic and title for your research. Based on the
feedback provided by your professor in Learning Activity 3, you have to make the
corresponding changes to each one of the sections of the report so as to proceed with
the preparation of the instruments and the collection of data.
Use the following template, but do not include the instructions of the activity in
your final document. The instructions are a guide for you)
Pre-Report Template 1
TITLE OF THE MIXED METHODS RESEARCH
GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH
Write 1 objective only
Make sure the objective states what you expect to achieve in general terms. Your
objectives should be stated using action verbs that are specific enough to be
measured, for example: to identify, to determine, etc. Avoid the use of vague nonactive
verbs such as: to know, to understand, to believe, to study, etc., because it is
difficult to evaluate whether they have been achieved.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
In a well written PARAGRAPH (Aprox. 150 words). Make clear why this particular
subject is important to investigate. You must present an argument for the “worth” of
the study. Make sure you include the information obtained by answering the following
questions.
Why are you doing the research? (problem)
What are you doing this research for? (provide alternative to solve a problem)
Who are the beneficiaries of my research?
What is the feasibility of implementing it?
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1 Quantitative research questions
Theme N. 3
Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE
Unidad de Educación a Distancia
1 Qualitative research questions
Remember that these cannot be yes/no questions
MIXED METHODS RESEARCH QUESTION
Remember to write your mixed methods research question based on the design you
have chosen. Check the guidelines provided at the videoconference as well.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Develop this section based on the guide provided in Theme 3. Keep in mind the
variables of your research. You can use subheadings.
(Use in-text citation and reference list, remember to use APA style). Check the
guide provided for Referencing in the section files. Use at least 8 references.
(Only articles from the year 2010 up to the present are accepted). Make sure
they are academic references.
METHODOLOGY
Mixed methods research design
Describe fully the research design that you selected for your study.
Context and Participants
A researcher should indicate in considerable detail how he or she obtained the
subjects—the participants —for the study. If generalization is intended, a random
sample should be used. If a convenience sample must be used, relevant
demographics (gender, course, school, occupation, and so on) of the sample should
be described.
Ethical considerations
Mention two ethical issues that will be considered in your research. Attach the
informed consent.
Methods and Instruments to collect data
This section will provide details of each data-collection instrument.
Name the methods and instruments you used in your study for qualitative and
quantitative data collection (include 2 references). For each instrument, describe what

the instrument is supposed to measure or assess. Then explain how the methods to
collect data will help answer your research questions.
The items from the instruments to collect data should be attached to the
document.
APPLICATION OF THE INSTRUMENTS OF QUALITATIVE OR QUANTITATIVE
PHASE
If the qualitative phase is applied first do the following:
Select and design the instrument to collect data. Check the date that it will be applied.
Agree with your participants first. You can record in order to facilitate the analysis of
the data.
You can use the following videos as references when collecting data:
Ø In-depth interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb3UlqAMwKA
Ø Focus group: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ng8SnDIre4o
Ø Observation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK69jZyC19c
After collecting your data, arrange the information so you can categorize it into the
most relevant findings (coding). Check the following videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phXssQBCDls
Attach the coding sheet to this document
If the quantitative phase is applied first do the following:
Select and design the instrument to collect data. Decide the way it will be applied.
Tabulate the data and present the results
IN THIS SECTION, YOU HAVE TO PRESENT THE RESULTS OF THE TWO
PHASES. THIS WILL DEPEND ON THE DESIGN
REFERENCES:
Remember that all the references used in the document are located in this section.
You can not include a reference list in each section. Use consistent APA style format.
