There’s never been a better time to enjoy all that Pennsylvania has to offer. As you hit the road in your 

RV, the economy and gas prices have made longer trips more costly. Thankfully, Pennsylvania has so 

many wonderful attractions, natural beauty and historical landmarks to explore. There are many fun 

adventures to enjoy in your RV close to home. 

From lush forests, trails, parks and glistening streams to fun amusement parks, museums, breweries 

and vineyards, zoos and historic landmarks such as Gettysburg, the state capitol building, Liberty Bell, 

forts and covered bridges, Pennsylvania has much to offer. Along the way, there are many wonderful 

campgrounds offering fantastic amenities to make your stay fun and comfortable. 

Outdoor recreation is an important part of Pennsylvania’s economy. According to the Commonwealth, 

it generates $11.8 billion and creates 146,000 jobs. As you travel the state, you are supporting the 

economy and helping to fund improvements. 

In this issue of EXPLORE Pennsylvania, we’ve provided a sample of trips you can take in different 

areas of the state. These short itineraries will get you started, but the possibilities for adventures are 

endless. If you’re feeling the squeeze from higher prices, you’re not alone. This issue features useful 

budgeting tips from Freedom in Can, full-time RVers who live and travel in a 72 square foot vintage 

camper. 

Maintaining your vehicle is also very important to keeping costs down. This issue features basic 

maintenance that you should be aware of as an RV owner. 

If you’re thinking about a new RV, but don’t know what to buy, check out our pages explaining

to Reduce RV Travel Costs

Wait...did we just catch you daydreaming 

about quitting your job and 

driving off into the sunset in your RV? 

Ahhh, then reality sets in! What are 

you going to do when the pay checks 

stop coming? 

Freedom in a Can 

That was us in 2012, when we left our home and careers to seek 

out a different life path. We had big dreams and some solid 

savings, but when gas prices topped $4 per gallon in the summer 

before our September launch date, our resolve went on trial. “We 

got this,” we thought. Afterall, as young people with few needs and 

even fewer assets, we enjoyed inexpensive adventures, so why 

couldn’t we do it again as middle-aged adults with even more life 

experience? 

More than 10 years later, we are still on the road and have been 

lucky enough to explore all 50 U.S. states, 10 Canadian provinces, 

every national park you can drive to, see old friends and make 

many new ones, volunteer in various places across the country 

and world...and we do it all on less than $28K per year! 

While our tips for saving money while traveling have been uncovered 

while full-time RVing, they apply to anyone looking for less expensive 

adventures in their RV, for any length of time. And, they just might 

cause you to ask yourself, “How much do I really need to have fun 

and thrive?

1. Only Buy as Much RV as You Need 

Those Class A diesel pushers with full-sized bathrooms and elevated 

decks are gorgeous, but if you are trying to save money while 

traveling, you may consider a different escape vehicle. The larger 

the RV, the more it will cost to purchase, maintain, register, gas up, 

camp in, and store. What about a mid-sized travel trailer for 1/10th 

of the cost? Keeping it small keeps it less expensive. 

We’ve been living, traveling, and working from a 12 ft. vintage travel 

trailer, total cost $5,500 plus some good old fashioned sweat equity. 

We are able to store the gear we need for all types of weather 

and all the toys we use to play outside, as well as everything we 

need to run a small, mobile business. Since our RV is so small and 

lightweight, it’s easy to tow, park, and we can run on nearly 100% 

solar power!

2. Go Solar for Inexpensive & Free Camping 

Just because you have an RV doesn’t mean that you have to spend 

$50+ a night in an RV park. With a small, robust, solar powered 

system of 2 x 100W panels on the roof plus 100W solar suitcase 

and a 100Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate battery, we don’t need electrical 

hook-ups to power our lives. 

We boondock for free on public land around 80% of the time, 

and the other 20% we visit friends and family or stay in gorgeous, 

remote, inexpensive campgrounds in national forests, state forests, 

or on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land out west. These 

locations offer quiet, safe spaces without electrical hook-ups and 

keep the overhead down. To find these free or low cost camping 

options, we use a few camping apps, such as The Dyrt PRO or 

iOverlander. 

When campgrounds close during the off season, we choose 

Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome locations for a fun overnight 

stay. With a low annual fee, these unique clubs offer RVers a 

beautiful place to park for the night. 

3. Make Cooking Outside an Event 

We’ve been vegetarian foodies for over 25 years and love to turn 

our meals into a gourmet event, whether over a 2-burner stove, 

campfire, or grill. We have a few key tools for our indoor and outdoor 

kitchen, but only one electrical appliance…and guess what? 

It’s not a microwave! Our immersion blender makes smoothies, 

soups, pesto, sauces, cocktails, and so much more! 

In addition to some basic pots, pans, and utensils, we have an 

OTZI Flat Pack Grill, a Banks Fry-Bake, a Coleman griddle, and a 

Lodge Dutch Oven. With these key items, we can make everything 

you make in your home kitchen. To try out some of our tasty and

While we love to eat out at restaurants while hanging out with 

friends, or when we are simply on the move between places, 

we limit those outings to once a week. We also try to make the 

most of these indulgences by going out to brunch (by definition 2 

meals in 1) or getting large portions and saving some as leftovers 

– another 2 for 1 deal. This stretches the budget and allows us the 

opportunity to splurge occasionally.

4. Camp & Play on Public Lands 

We enjoy the culture offered in cities, but they can be expensive 

places. We visit cities to see friends and/or drop in for some local 

culture. Most often, we live in rural, public areas around the country 

which offer camping for up to 21 days and opportunities to both 

play and work — with access being inexpensive or completely free. 

For instance, for just $80 per year, you can purchase an America 

the Beautiful Interagency pass. This pass gets you (and everyone 

in your vehicle) into every national park in the nation, as well as all 

other federal lands (national forests, BLM sites, etc.) which charge 

a fee. If you are planning a national park road trip, this pass will 

pay for itself in your first three national park visits out west. If you 

are a veteran or active military, you get a lifetime pass for free. 

And, if you are over the age of 62 or disabled, you not only get 

a lifetime pass for $80, you also get half off at all federal campgrounds. 

Note: If you are interested in traveling in Canada, the “Discovery 

Pass” pays for itself if you spend at least seven nights in their 

national parks within one year.

In addition to camping, we have our bikes, kayaks, and backpacking 

gear with us at all times, allowing us to get out there and enjoy the 

forests, deserts, lakes, rivers, and oceans that bring us so much joy 

and good health. Once you make the initial investment, these toys 

will help you stay active and the outdoor fun is completely free. 

And, whenever possible, we’ve purchased much of our equipment 

second-hand, keeping our costs even lower. 

5. Deeply Explore a Bucket List Region 

People often assume that we are always racing around the country 

and filling up our gas tank every day. On average we drive around 

16K miles per year in one vehicle, while most American couples 

drive about 30K between two vehicles. It’s amazing but true that 

everyday trips to work, the grocery store, and swim practice can 

rack up more miles than regional RV travel. 

This year, we spent five months traveling through British Columbia, 

Northwest Territories, Yukon Territory and Alaska. We experienced 

more than we ever thought possible, but only traveled 8,000 miles. 

We hiked, biked, and kayaked in every major region, all while 

keeping up with our digital nomad work. To say we are different 

people as a result of this trip is truly an understatement. It will take 

years to unpack just how much value this incredible experience 

has enriched our lives! 

So just because you have an RV doesn’t mean that you have to visit 

all the iconic western national parks in one season. Take the time 

to explore your own state or region by staying off the interstates 

and driving the backroads. Pro Tip: Select “Avoid Highways”on 

Google Maps and you’ll discover some amazing places to explore 

nearby without marathon driving days. 

6. Volunteer, It Pays More Than You Might Think! 

If you are planning to hit the road part or full time, another great 

way to save money is by volunteering or doing work-trade along 

the way. These opportunities, which often come with a free campsite 

for RVers, are truly endless – from volunteering with national and 

state parks to working on small, organic farms via WWOOF to volunteering 

with the C.A.R.E. or DOVE programs via the Escapees RV 

Club. We’ve outlined several of these opportunities in the Resources 

section of our website. They are not only fun, they are a great way 

to learn more about the area, make lifelong friends, and enjoy 

many tasty potlucks! 

Saving money while RVing isn’t rocket science and it doesn’t have 

to mean going without; it simply means deciding where to spend 

your money based upon what is most important to you. We’ve 

learned to slow life down and take pleasure in the things that give 

back more than they cost – like a stunning sunset, a walk on the 

beach, or a bike ride in the woods. We hope to see you on the

Care now will help prevent major repair costs later. 

A highway commissioner once told me, 

“It’s a fact of life. Sometimes we have to 

pay to keep what we already have.” And, 

as it is with our national highway system’s 

maintenance, the same goes for our 

vehicles. 

RVs are at once a house and a vehicle, putting up with an earthquake 

and a hurricane every time we drive them. From the heat of summer 

sun to the ice and cold of winter, these machines have to put up 

with an amazing amount, and they have to be light enough that 

we can haul them down the road. Imagine driving your stick-built 

house down the road; it wouldn’t last long. RVs do this daily, but 

they need to be maintained for optimal service life. 

Emergency exit windows can 

get sticky. Operate them at 

least seasonally and treat the 

seals with RV slideout seal 

treatment if they’re sticky. 

Checking the sidewall sealants 

is essential. Use the proper 

sealant for the job and the type 

of RV you’re working on. 

Whether you plan on doing the maintenance yourself or have your 

favorite certified RV technician do the work, the onus falls on you 

to ensure the maintenance is done. 

Besides improving the ownership experience, RV maintenance is 

also a matter of safety for you and your travel companions. Proper 

maintenance makes a malfunction much less likely. 

Body 

Right at the top of the list of maintenance fails that cost the most 

money are roof and sidewall leaks and delamination. Preventing 

water damage should be a priority. Some manufacturers recommend 

inspecting seals on the RV as often as every 90 days. The reason 

for this is a combination of the factors mentioned above; cold, 


heat, and flexing. The sealants used on RVs need to be somewhat 

flexible and remain soft to some extent to withstand the constant 

body stress. They will fail, and water can get in and do extensive 

damage when they do. 

Roof and sidewall sealants should be inspected at least semiannually, 

but quarterly is better. The roof should also be checked immediately 

for any suspected damage. A walk-on roof makes maintenance 

much easier, but not all RV roofs are designed to hold a person’s 

weight. Check the manufacturer’s owner’s manual to see if you can 

walk on your roof. Here’s a hint: if you don’t have a roof ladder, your 

roof may not be walkable. Caution: RV roofs can be slippery. Always 

use caution when working on an RV roof. If you’re not comfortable 

with it, leave it to the pros.

Sealants should be checked for completeness, holes, gaps, peeling, 

and signs of holding back standing water. Any failures should 

be repaired using the correct sealant for your brand and type of 

roofing material. It is best to use the product designed and sold by 

the roof manufacturer for your roof (Dicor, Alpha Systems, LaSalle 

Bristol) to maintain the warranty. Check the roof membrane for 

cuts, holes, scrapes, or signs of the glue releasing underneath. 

The sidewalls use different sealants, and it is best to consult the RV 

manufacturer for recommended sealants. They’re probably listed in 

the owner’s manual. Some manufacturers are very specific about 

the sealant products that are to be used on their RVs. 

Chassis 

The chassis of your RV is where the rubber hits the road. Of 

course, mechanical maintenance relates directly to the reliability, 

but it also is intertwined with safety. Whether motorized or towable, 

your RV is a large profile vehicle with different maintenance 

requirements than the family Honda. Follow the service and 

maintenance guide in the chassis owner’s manual for your motorhome. 

Towables have specific maintenance requirements, which must 

be followed. Lippert and Dexter Axle have detailed trailer axle 

maintenance guides that are free to download; the former has an 

app for your smart device with all their service information. Trailer 

hubs should be repacked every 12 months or 12,000 miles, 

whichever comes first. Electric trailer brakes should be inspected 

annually and adjusted every 3,000 miles or if braking is compromised. 

ALL RVs require regular tire attention. RV tires age out before 

they wear out and should be replaced after 5-7 years from the 

tire’s manufacture date, as listed on the sidewall. Proper inflation 

is essential, as underinflated tires (for the weight they’re carrying) 

are subject to over-flexing, heating, and blowouts. A Tire Pressure 

Monitoring System, or TPMS, is an essential addition for every RV 

and can help prevent damage and even crashes. 

Roof maintenance is essential to prevent leaks and water 

damage. 

The regulator is the heart of the propane system. It is recommended to 

have the LP system professionally tested annually and adjusted 

as needed. 

The exterior DOT lighting must be checked before every trip as 

part of a pre-trip walkaround and systems check. 

Interior 

A clean RV is a happy RV. While interior maintenance may have 

fewer checkboxes, keeping the interior in top condition makes 

your living space more enjoyable and the resale value higher. Keep 

things well-adjusted and squeak-free. Appliances should be tested 

and kept clean, and anything broken in the rig should be repaired 

as soon as practical. 

LP GAS 

Liquified Petroleum Gas, specifically Propane, is used in most RVs 

for heat, hot water, cooking, and refrigeration. These systems are 

time-tested efficient ways of powering these conveniences while 

living remotely in the RV. Occasionally, though, leaks can happen, 

and regulators fail. It is recommended that the LPG system be 

inspected and tested with a pressure manometer at least annually, 


Spiders love the smell of propane. This silky web caused the water 

heater not to fire. Check appliances and vents for nests! 

or any time there is a suspected malfunction. All Propane appliances 

should be checked and tested at the beginning of the camping 

season. Any sign of mice in the RV means they may have nested 

in the furnace or other appliances and need to be checked for 

function and safety.

Prevent major repair costs by maintaining your RV 

Exterior 

I’m a car guy, and I hate having a dirty vehicle, and the RV is no 

exception. Keeping the exterior clean and waxed is essential to 

keep the unit presentable and prevent surface degradation. 

Thoroughly waxing an RV is a bit of work but pays big dividends. 

Operate and lubricate all doors, hatches, windows, steps, and 

awnings. Touch up frame paint with gloss black rust preventive 

paint. 

Safety 

RVs are equipped with several safety devices, including escape 

windows, smoke detectors, LP detectors, carbon monoxide (CO) 

detectors, and fire extinguishers. Batteries, where appropriate, 

should be changed at the beginning of the season. Detectors have 

a finite life, so check them for expiration dates. All detectors must 

be tested weekly while the RV is in use. All safety detectors in RVs 

must be listed for RV use, per the National Fire Protection 

Association’s 1192 standard.

Southwestern Pennsylvania 

Kentuck Knob, Chalk Hill, PA 

Our adventure begins an hour and half outside 

of Pittsburgh at Kentuck Knob. While not 

as well-known as Fallingwater, it’s very 

impressive. Designed by famed architect 

Frank Lloyd Wright, Kentuck Knob was 

build in 1956 for Bernardine and I.N. Hagen. 

The house sits on 80 acres in the mountains 

above Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Visitors 6 

years and older can tour the inside of the 

home, which is built in Wright’s Usonian 

architecture. All guided tours depart on a 

shuttle from the visitor center. Learn more

Ohiopyle State Park, Ohiopyle, PA 

Just four miles away is Ohiopyle State Park. 

Ohiopyle, the gateway to the Laurel Highlands, 

is a must visit for outdoor enthusiasts. 

The park encompasses approximately 

20,500 acres of lush forests with hiking and 

biking trails, streams and waterfalls. In the 


heart of the park, the Youghiogheny River 

Gorge flows as the centerpiece and provides 

some of the best white water rafting 

and beautiful scenery. 

There are many waterfalls within the park, 

including Ohiopyle Falls, which fall 

20-feet and can be observed from a 3-level 

observation deck; and Cucumber Falls, a 

scenic 30-foot waterfall. Swimmers flock 

to the natural waterslides downstream 

from Cascades Falls, where water carved a 

sloped trench in the rock flowing down the 

hillside. Swimmers are urged to observe 

caution as natural hazards exist in the area. 

Bicyclists can join the Great Allegheny 

Passage (GAP), a nearly-level rail trail, at 

the Ohiopyle trailhead. The GAP is 150 

miles, beginning in Pittsburgh, traveling 

through the Laurel Highlands and ending in 

Washington, D.C. 

Camping is available from April through 

November. Reservations can be made 

online at Pennsylvaniastateparks.reserve 

america.com. The park is open daily, dawn 

to dusk. Start your visit at the at GoLaurel

The Borough of Ohiopyle is a small, 

charming town in the middle of the state 

parks. There are great restaurants, miniature 

golf, and outfitters where you can rent 

bikes, arrange white water rafting trips and 

ziplining excursions.

FallingWater, Mill Run, PA 

After your trip to Ohiopyle visit FallingWater, 

America’s most famous house designed 

by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 

for the Kaufmann family, owners of the 

former Kaufmann Department Stores in 

Pittsburgh. It is designated as a National 

Historic Landmark and Commonwealth of 

Pennsylvania Treasure. Inside, visitors will 

find the artwork and original Wright-designed

Bear Run Nature Reserve, Mill Run, PA 

Fallingwater is located on the 5,100-acre 

Bear Run Nature Reserve (fallingwater. 

org/bear-run-reserve). Visitors can hike 28 

miles of trails, fish and hunt. The Reserve 

is home to 500 species of plants, 53 bird 

species and wildlife. It is free to enter and 

open to the public. Tent camping is available 

on five sites, which must be reserved 

in advance.

State Park, the educational center, named 

after Pennsylvania’s former governor, 

provides information to visitors planning to 

visit Presque Isle State Park. Entry is free 

and guests can explore interactive exhibits, 

climb a 75’ tower and shop in its store. 

Presque Isle State Park, Erie, PA 

Visit Pennsylvania’s only “seashore.” 

Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre 

sandy peninsula that arches into Lake Erie. 

The National Natural Landmark is a great 

place to birdwatch as it’s a favorite spot 

for migrating birds. It is home to the many 

endangered, threatened and rare species. 

Hiking trails and bike paths are great ways 

to explore the park. 

The park offers environmental education 

and recreational program throughout the 

year. Pontoon boat rides and kayaking 

are popular, as are the boat tours offered 

of Lake Erie. Thirteen beaches are part of 

Presque Isle. Surfing, swimming and scuba 

diving are permitted in designated waters. 

Fishing is also permitted. 

Parking is available in the larger beach lots. 

The park is open every day from 5 a.m. to 

sunset. Contact the park office for facility 

seasons and hours. No overnight camping

Lighthouses – Presque Isle is home to 

three lighthouses: Presque Isle Lighthouse, 

Erie Land Lighthouse and North Pier Light.

Erie Zoo, 423 West 38th Street, Erie, PA 

Zoos are popular destinations for families 

and the Erie Zoo is no exception. The zoo is 

home to nearly 400 animals and 11 botanical 

gardens. Popular animals include its African 

Lion, tiger, leopard, alpaca, kangaroo, red 

panda, zebra and many more. It is open 

March 1 – November 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 

p.m. Walking through the zoo takes 2 hours.

Clarion River Trail and the Little Toby Creek.

Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitor Center

The Kinzua Bridge offers a stunning view of 

the Kinzua Valley. The glass floor area of the 

viewing deck gives visitors a picturesque 

view of the tree tops and forest below. Stop 

into the visitor center to orient yourself to 

the bridge and the surrounding area, and 

learn about the history of the bridge, which 

was once the highest and longest railroad 

viaduct in the world. The center also houses 

the Pennsylvania Wilds Conservation Gift

Eagles Mere Historic Village

Eagles Mere Air Museum

The Eagles Mere Air Museum houses 

the area’s largest collection of antique

but attending America’s Largest RV Show, 

September 13-17, in Hershey, Pennsylvania

Vehicle & Camping Association, hosts of the show. “They come in 

with a plan to visit the brands they are interested in. It’s important 

for them to see the RVs in person and to check out the quality of 

the product before they make a commitment to buy.” 


“Many people come every year just to see what is new or to pick 

up products and accessories they need for their RV,” she says. 

“Others may not be ready to buy, but the show helps them figure 

out what RV they would like to buy in the future.” 

Manufacturers representatives and dealers are on hand to explain 

all the RV features, review floorplans and help you make a deal on 

a new RV. 

In addition to the huge selection of RVs, more than 200 exhibitors 

offer the latest in accessories, cleaning supplies, camping equipment, 

decorative items, food and personal care items. It’s a great 

opportunity to buy products to make your RV feel more like home. 

Campgrounds, vacation destinations, RV rental companies and 

services, financial and insurance services and other RV-related 

companies are also on hand to help you book your next trip, obtain
