The highlight of the festival is naturally the food: pancakes and sausage served with LM Sugarbush Maple Syrup is the traditional choice, but there are plenty of other options, including Nic’s spicy maple-glazed BBQ ribs, maple baked beans, maple cinnamon roll with maple crème, you name it, it probably has maple in it – coffee, tea cocoa, candy, coated nuts. The farm is one of the largest maple syrup producers in Indiana, averaging 500 to 700 gallons per year. The last full moon before the beginning of spring was called the Sugar Maker (sogalikus) by Vermont’s Indigenous Abenaki peoples. According to one legend, they learned to make maple sugar from the squirrels. The European settlers learned to make maple syrup from the Native Americans and the sugar moon or sap moon was listed in the Farmer’s Almanac as one of the names for the first full moon in March. At LM Sugarbush, this moon signals that it is time to prepare for spring with the sweetness of maple syrup on one’s lips and gratitude for the rich bounty of maple trees on the land they have tramped since childhood. • The annual Maple Syrup Festival will be held February 25-26 and March 4-5, 2023.
