It’s pronounced “Oh-et,” like ‘Poet’
(I hate writing though—too permanent,
public, private)
Yes, it’s made-up
(It’s a long story but my dad was a refugee
and architect)
I’m Russian, not really, but my parents are
from the former Soviet Union
(his old name wasn’t Russian; it was very
Jewish)
Don’t worry, I get this question a lot
(and did you know ‘Poiesis’ is the Greek root for creation?)
I suppose I like it—it is my name
(we’re not Greek though)
You’re right, it makes a good story
(I’m getting tired of explaining)
I wonder about his old name
(Who would I be?)
—Was it selfish to cut off the past
(He lost our history)
And was the new one better?
(Is it fair to be angry…)
You’re right, he didn’t choose his birth-name either
(It was brave to start again)
And now my name has a meaning
(This story is our history)
Oet is like poet is like ‘poiesis’—to make new
(My siblings changed their names and so could I)
It sets intentions for the future, for growth
(but I like my name—I think I’ll keep it)
Anyway, it’s nice to meet you
(Thank you)
I’ll be taking care of you this visit
(I wonder what’s in your name)
