It is essential that we listen to one another with trust and respect. In making this connection, we will—as the African proverb states—go further together. References 1. Ely, R. J., & Thomas, D. A. Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity
Written by Mary Shah, MLS, AHIP
Many people focus, especially in the last few
years, on the importance of inclusion, equity, and
diversity.
You can make the argument that in the financial
sector, it strengthens group dynamics and
cohesion while resulting in stronger decisions and
increased profit margins with greater employee
and customer engagement. You can make the
argument for diversity from the question of
biology: that a larger gene pool increases the
chance of survival and protects the species as well as the environment on which
the species depends. For me, it is the right thing to do. I was raised to revere
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and practice connecting with people based on the
content of their character. I have also been on the receiving end of serious
hatred because of this practice. Instead of discouraging me, this confrontation
has strengthened my resolve. I believe that I have an obligation to do what I
can to make sure that if someone is affected by a decision, they have input and
control over the process. In hearing more perspectives, I learn more and can
