ince this is a book about spies and spy craft, not everyone

who helped me can be thanked in public. You might try

rubbing the pages with a solution of water, iodine, and alcohol

to see if any names appear between the lines. Named or unnamed,

The Cheshire Cat grinning down on this project is Pham

Xuan An. Since our first meeting in 1992 he was a generous

host, and even after his disappearance he had lessons to teach.

I also wish to thank An’s family, particularly his wife, Hoang Thi

Thu Nhan, and his eldest son, Pham Xuan Hoang An, for the

hours I spent as a guest in their house and for their help with

this project.
