heroes of our time HEROES OF OUR TIME After an epic sports career, seven-time Olympic rider Jos Lansink now focuses mainly on the training of riders. From his stable based in Meeuwen (Belgium), he guides riders and horses up to the highest level and since the beginning of this year he also is the national coach of the Dutch showjumping team. With his impressive track record and unprecedented dose of experience and wisdom, Jos Lansink Jos definitely deserves a place in our series Heroes of our Time. Text: Jenneke Smit | Photography: Remco Veurink Jos Lansink is highly regarded in the world of international showjumping. He started riding at the age of three and it turned out to be the very beginning of an impressive sports career. He became Dutch champion with the ponies and after that, the horses started to play an increasingly important role in the life of the farmer’s son. As the oldest son he was expected to take over the farm, but his heart was with the horses. Ehrens and Horn After finishing school, Jos started part-time riding for a trading stable. “The first time I worked half days at a trading stable and half days at home on the farm. At one point we sold a horse to Rob Ehrens through the trading stable and I got the opportunity to work with Rob for three months. After that I was determined to continue as a professional rider. Rob knew a stable near him that was looking for a rider. I went there, but left after one year because Hans Horn offered me a job, that was in 1982. He had bought De Wiemselbach and asked if I wanted to come and work for him. Because of that, I was able to go back to my native region”, tells Jos. This was the beginning of a partnership that would last for 14 years and included many highlights. Such as winning the Grand Prixs of Geesteren and Rotterdam in 1988 and being selected for the Olympic Games in Seoul with Felix in the same year.
