Mentality Jos is the right man for the job as he masters the noble art of riding and overcoming the highest obstacles like no other. He always pays attention to the basics and always seems to be in a certain state of mental calmness. “In our sport you need a lot of dedication, patience and a long-term vision. Every day you experience new things and every horse is different. In my experience, most top level horses are something special. As a rider you have to be smarter than the horse, because you can never be stronger. The horses have a lot of blood nowadays but not only did they change, also the riders have a different mentality. And that doesn’t make it easier. Back in the days, it was really normal to help each other out. For example, I discussed a lot with Emile Hendrix when we were in the Dutch team together. We sometimes rode each other’s horses, I did the flatwork with Finesse and he helped me with mine. Everything is way more individualistic nowadays and that’s something I regret, because two people always have more knowledge than one.” Future goals The perfectionist in Jos also speaks when it comes to welfare. “We have 54 horses here in the stable and all of them go out in the fields or paddocks. In any case, the horses come out of their boxes three times a day. It is not fair to expect top performances from horses when they are in their stables 23 hours a day. The sport asks a lot of the horses, so it is our job to manage that as good as possible. Also to prevent injuries. With the young horses, I really insist on giving them breaks. They really benefit from being in the field for two or three months and I have always done this with my horses. For example my Olympic horse Valentina van ‘t Heike, even when she was ten heroes of our time years old I let her recover in the field for the whole winter. Although there was a stable in the field to go in to, she preferred to be standing knee-deep in the snow and came back stronger than ever. A horse is an athlete and they need to be treated like that. Boredom is the worst thing for a horse so you need to keep them fresh in the mind and strong in the body.” Does Jos has anything to wish for at the moment? “My main goal is to stay healthy. I do everything I can to maintain that. For the rest I am quite happy with how life treats me. We have good horses, nice staff and riders, things are going well. As a chef d’equipe I hope we can win some medals. To achieve that, I am as motivated as I have always been as a rider”, concludes Jos. 'My main goal is to stay healthy.
