Senior Friendship Centers Celebrates 50 Years of Providing Life-Saving Services for Seniors in Southwest Florida In Sarasota County, more than 40,000 seniors, or about 23% of the population, live alone. The mission of Senior Friendship Centers is to build vibrant communities by advancing wellness, connection, and enrichment throughout the journey of aging. We provide services such as caregiver resources, Adult Day Care, activity centers for active seniors, dining centers, home delivered meals, volunteer opportunities, exercise classes, lifelong learning, economic and socialization. As we celebrate this milestone and look to the next 50 years, our vision for Southwest Florida is for people to feel supported and included at any age. feature Kayaking the Mangrove Bayou at The Bay An early morning paddle connects you to the water Off busy US 41 near the Municipal Building and behind the blue-roofed Lundy-era Bay Park Conservancy offices, there’s a kayak launch that takes you amidst thick mangroves then out to Sarasota Bay. It’s tucked away from view due to lush native plants, but easily accessible after a short walking from the parking lot just off 41. The Bay - that project that’s in the process of redoing the waterfront area from the south where the old Selby Library was, to the northernmost part of the Van Wezel’s parking lot - has completed Phase 1 and what comes with that, along with yoga classes, live music, walking paths and more, is a chance to kayak. They offer a free sampler kayak paddle on Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. complete with full gear and an excellent tour leader. The guide on this trip was Craig of Ride and Paddle (rideandpaddle.com). He’s an expert on mangroves, birds and the bay’s ecosystem plus he gives you an update on the Bay’s progress. Sign up on the Bay site (You have to reserve a spot and may find as I did it’s booked solid for a few weeks. Go on the wait list - I did that too - and at the last minute, I got a ticket). Then choose a single or double kayak. All ages were in our group with both men and women. You’ll be given a concise, but very informative crash class in kayaking. Before The Bay Park was underway, the bayou had unfiltered water and needed to be dredged and cleaned up and a filtration system was added. Mangroves, as you will learn, do a lot of things and they’re all good. They hang on to the soil - lessening erosion due to things like hurricanes. They also help filter water and provide a habitat for birds as well as a place for fish to lay eggs and very small crabs to make a home. The goal of the Bay project is to link the community to the Sarasota Bay and provide access to the waterfront. Another goal is to reduce what is called “hardscape” - man-made features like seawalls - and, in the Van Wezel’s case, lots and lots of asphalt and concrete. Kayaking is not that difficult - you quickly learn how to get your kayak going where you want it to go relatively quickly. In our group of a baker’s dozen paddlers, the challenge was to keep from bopping into each other. If one moved we all moved which created endless movement, but we worked out how to keep a safe distance from each other and o just sit and be motionless in our kayaks. Craig gave a superb description of the flora and fauna and an efficient explanation of paddling basics. After you launch and settle into your kayak, you follow the leader, so to speak, and gently sweep through mangroves before heading out on to Sarasota Bay. It was very peaceful. Try the sample paddle and then sign up for another ride. Or, you can bring your own kayak and launch.
