OUR NEW HEAD COACH SETS THE
SCENE FOR TODAY’S GAME...
Tonight will be a really proud moment for
myself and my family, when I’m standing on
the sidelines as head coach of QPR for the
first time at Loftus Road.
I’m excited by the opportunity and it’s really quite
humbling when you look at some of the players
and managers who have been here previously.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first few weeks at the
club and I’d like to thank the owners, Les Ferdinand
and Lee Hoos for giving me the chance to come
to this club and work with them. Everyone’s been
so welcoming to me and my staff and the players
have been extremely receptive to the information
we’ve given them and the work we’re trying to do.
This is a really great environment, somewhere I’ve
very quickly felt comfortable and it’s a good place
to come to work every day. That gives me a good
feeling about what we can achieve moving forward.
I’m a big believer in surrounding yourself with
individuals who are not only good at the job but
good people, first and foremost. That’s why
I wanted Mike Garrity and Iain Brunskill here
alongside me here – two people I’m close to and
I’ve known for a number of years. Mike and Ian
have been along a similar path to mine, developing
younger players before moving to senior football.
They’re both outstanding coaches and fantastic
people who will fit in well here.
There are plenty of points to play for in the second
half of this Championship season and we got off
to a really good start with a fantastic win away
from home at Preston, meaning we managed to
change that losing feeling we’d experienced both
before and after the World Cup break. We need to
keep building and tonight we’ll be facing a tough
task against a Luton team who have recently had a
change of management themselves. Luton got to
the play-offs last season and they’re going really
well again, but it’s a challenge we are relishing and
looking forward to with great optimism.
I experienced a game under the lights at Loftus
Road last season with Blackpool and there’s
something magical about the atmosphere. As a
coach, nothing would bring me greater pleasure
than to give the supporters a team they can be
proud of and enjoy watching every week. When
you see the team giving their all on the pitch in
every game and get behind them, you create an
intimidating atmosphere that can give us a massive
advantage and I can’t wait to sample it.
I’m really looking forward to working with Ilias Chair,
who’s just returned from the fantastic experience
of being involved at a World Cup with Morocco.
To be part of that journey to the semi-finals was
an incredible achievement and something he’ll
remember forever. I’m sure he’s taken a lot from
that and he’ll be full of confidence coming back
here. Watching Ilias from afar, he’s been one of the
standout performers in the Championship for the
last few seasons and my impression has been that
he loves playing football and loves playing for QPR.
We’re also hopeful Luke Amos and Tyler Roberts will
be in contention for the squad this evening and it’ll
be nice if they can help to give me a few selection
problems.
Finally, I hope everyone has had a fantastic
Christmas with their family and friends and that we
can help to make 2023 a happy new year for all QPR
fans by moving forward and having a successful
second half of the season.
Thank you for all your support.
TUMBLING OUT
Teddy Lawrence struck twice as
QPR Under-18s came from
behind to stun Tottenham and
claim a memorable 3-1 victory
in the third round of the FA
Youth Cup.
Rangers trailed the Premier
League side with just two
minutes left on the clock, but
Lawrence levelled and Rayan Kolli
then struck the crossbar in a
dramatic climax to normal time.
With the tie going to an
additional half-hour, Kieran
Petrie converted Alfie Tuck’s
cross to put Micah Hyde’s side
ahead before Lawrence broke
through to score his second late
on and wrap up the win.
The young R’s will now travel to
Luton Town in the fourth round.
PRESTON NE
QPR
DEEPDALE | ATT: 14,534 | HT SCORE: 0-0 | REFEREE: OLIVER LANGFORD
Jimmy Dunne’s second-half goal
ensured a winning start to the
Neil Critchley era as Rangers
clinched a deserved three points
at Deepdale.
Critchley’s side looked in
control throughout and went
close to scoring on several
occasions, notably when
Tim Iroegbunam’s 25-yard
effort rebounded off Freddie
Woodman’s left-hand post.
Chris Willock also went close
either side of the break, before
Kenneth Paal swung in a 58thminute
corner and Dunne
bundled it over the line from
close range.
Iroegbunam and Albert Adomah
both forced saves from Woodman
as QPR continued to push forward
in search of a second goal.
But the R’s back line had to dig
in during the closing stages
and Seny Dieng’s reaction
save denied Ben Woodburn an
equaliser before Brad Potts’
volley flew narrowly wide.
hoops
Albert, we’ve just passed the halfway mark
in the season – how do you feel it’s gone so
far overall?
So far so good – we’re in and around the play-off
positions. People expected us to be in that area
of the table and hopefully, with a new manager
involved, we can push on.
As you mentioned, we’ve recently experienced
a change of manager. What’s it like for players
when you have that period of uncertainty –
something you’ve probably seen many times
in your career?
It’s not ideal when you lose a manager and yes,
I’ve seen it many times, when managers have left
or got the sack. In this situation it was slightly
different – everyone, including all the supporters,
was aware of the speculation and it was just a
case of whether he decided to leave or stay.
The main thing, from a player’s perspective, is
that it’s a clean slate. Everyone has to take their
chance to showcase themselves and impress
in front of the new manager. I can apply that
to myself as well – I was in and out of the team
before but I started the new manager’s first
game at Preston and we won, so in that respect
it’s a new chapter. Straight away in that game,
we managed to implement what he wanted. We
worked hard, but he wants us to work harder still
and press off the ball. We’ve got players like Sam
Field who work extremely hard but maybe go
under the radar if they don’t score all that often.
Last season, when the team played a wing-back
system, you said you’d begun to regard yourself
primarily as a defender. Switching back to a
more traditional winger’s role since then, have
you changed that outlook?
Last season we didn’t play with any wingers and
I think I was fourth in line to be right wing-back,
but I managed to break into the side. Then at the
beginning of this season we went to a back four,
16 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
with two number 10s – usually Chris and Ilias. So
still no wingers! When I used to come on it was
more as a 10 rather than out wide, to do my job
and deliver crosses for the team. That’s football
sometimes – then suddenly a new manager
comes in and he’s playing with wide men. Now I
feel like I’m in my own zone, I can express myself
out wide and put more direct balls into the box.
QPR signed me as a winger and it feels like I’ve
finally got my wish a few years down the line!
I told Mide Shodipo, when we both came off
the bench in the Burnley game, ‘we need to
put wingers on the map again’. We wanted to
put something in the new manager’s head by
working hard and delivering from wide positions
and Mide certainly did that against Burnley.
Turning towards tonight’s opponents, Luton
Town, will the team feel they have a point to
prove after the 3-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road
a few months ago?
Definitely, when we lost at Luton everyone
was very disappointed. We were the form
team in the division at that time and we know
it’s basically a derby game as well. We owe
Luton one, we want to show we can beat them
and we look forward to a victory at home, or
at least making sure we take something from
the game.
Luton also have a new manager in Rob
Edwards. I’m assuming you weren’t on
his Christmas card list after scoring your
customary winner at Watford when he was
their manager earlier in the season…
We should play Watford every week! I do seem
to score against them but it really doesn’t
matter who scores, my main objective when I’m
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
17

hoops
on the pitch is that we win. I’d rather assist and
someone else scores the goals, whether it’s one
of the strikers or whoever.
On the subject of goals, all but one of those
you’ve scored for QPR have been away from
Loftus Road – the exception being against
Luton 18 months ago behind closed doors. How
much would it mean to you to find the net in
front of a home crowd?
Yes, it was the last home game of that Covid
season, my first home goal and it was a real
shame the supporters weren’t there to see it. I just
shouted ‘Come on you R’s’ myself! I really want to
score a league goal at home in front of the fans and
I can’t wait for that to happen. Obviously then I can
do my dancing celebration for them as well…
As this is our last game of 2022, are you someone
who makes New Year’s resolutions – and if so, do
you have any footballing ones for 2023?
My footballing ones are just to stay in the team
and start as many games as I can – and hopefully
I can reach 500 Championship appearances as
well. I’ve got the record already but it’d be great
to be the first player to reach 500. Off the pitch
my resolution would be to eat less chocolate,
especially Oreos – once I start munching I can
finish the whole pack! From a team point of view,
it’s obviously to get promotion at the end of the
season. That’s the case for any team and I’m sure
the new manager will be thinking the same thing.
ALTON HOUSE
ALTON House is located next to
the Queens Park Rangers box
office at the back of the South
Africa Road Stand.
Originally designed to be an
office block, Alton House
began life as the headquarters
for the Blue Star company
that was owned by ex-QPR
chairman Jim Gregory. After
that, it was rented out to the
BBC, who housed some of their
More recently, Alton House
contained an exhibition about
a possible new stadium for
representatives during the
COVID-19 affected fixtures
Nowadays, there is no longer
office space in Alton House.
SINTON
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
Happy Christmas everyone and welcome
back to Loftus Road for this evening’s
game against Luton Town which, as always,
promises to be one to look forward to.
Luton ran out worthy winners in the reverse fixture
back in October and will prove tough opponents to
overcome once again. They have a new manager in
charge and I am sure Rob Edwards will be looking to
get a run of results together to push Luton further
up the table during the second half of the season.
We, of course, also have a new head coach in
Neil Critchley. Neil has a fantastic background in
coaching at various levels of the game and did a
fabulous job when he was manager of Blackpool,
gaining promotion from League One and
establishing them in the Championship. Everyone
at the club is delighted to welcome Neil, along with
coaches Iain Brunskill and Mike Garrity and we all
wish them every success here at QPR as they look
to take us forward and build on the good work done
in the past few years.
Neil, Iain and Mike got off to a fantastic start with
a win at Preston North End. Having only taken
charge of the team on the Monday and, with the
extreme weather we had leading up to the match,
it was terrific to see us put in a very good team
performance, keep a clean sheet and get back to
winning ways after a disappointing run. I am writing
prior to the Cardiff City game on Boxing Day but
hope we will have returned from South Wales with
another positive result going into the game today.
Going into the Cardiff game, at the halfway point
of the season, we are in a very good position in the
league and hopefully we can push on towards where
we want to be.
We have now played everyone in the division and
it is probably a good time to reflect on the league
in general. It is such a competitive division, as the
table shows. Burnley and Sheffield United occupy
the top two places in the division and for me are the
best two sides we have played. Burnley beat us here
convincingly a couple of weeks ago and are on a very
good run while Sheffield United – even though we
won up there early in October – showed they were a
good side and have a strong squad to call on as the
season progresses.
There are so many others bunched below those
two, where not many points separate lots of teams
and I expect that to be the case during the second
half of the season. I think everyone is capable of
beating each other in this league, so consistency
of performances and results will play such an
important part in where each team finishes in May
– including us. Teams will have bad runs during the
season and it is how long that run lasts which can
define seasons. Let us hope we have had ours and
can push on from here on in.
So the World Cup is over and what a tournament
it was, finishing with an incredible final between
Argentina and France. It was a game that was
eagerly anticipated, with Argentina – led by arguably
the greatest player ever in Lionel Messi – up against
a France team with another world superstar in Kylian
Mbappe. Would it live up to expectation?? Would the
very best in the world produce on the biggest stage
of all when it mattered??
YES it would and YES they did.
Wow, what a game. It has been described as
the best World Cup final ever and that is hard to
disagree with. As a game, it had everything. Onesided
for the vast majority of it, with Argentina
totally in control, only for France to get back on level
terms near the end. Into extra time, the drama was
incredible with the game swinging one way then the
other. Messi, who else, looked to have won it only
for Mbappe, who else, to equalise again from the
penalty spot and score a World Cup final hat-trick.
There was even a chance for France to win it before
the biggest game in world football went to penalties.
What a shame someone has to miss and a team has
to lose in such circumstances but it makes for such
great viewing – when you’re not involved or it’s not
your country.
Argentina came through as worthy World Cup
winners, with Messi lifting the trophy, but Mbappe
will surely become one of the all-time greats in years
to come. To score three in a World Cup final and be
on the losing side will never be done again and he
also converted a penalty in the shoot-out. Wow. A
final that history will remember – it was incredible
and I have just about got my breath back from
watching it. Absolutely brilliant.
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
The tournament produced some amazing shocks.
Let’s remember Saudi Arabia beat Argentina. Japan
beat Germany and Morocco beat Belgium, Spain
and Portugal on their way to the semi-final. What
a tournament Morocco had and it was great to see
our very own Ilias Chair being part of that incredible
journey and come on in the third v fourth place
game against Croatia. Also Seny Dieng was part of
the Senegal squad that reached the last 16 only to
fall to England. Many congratulations to both Ilias
and Seny. Everyone at QPR is proud of them both.
Like all English fans, I was left pondering what might
have been once again at a major tournament. One
thing for sure is that, with the emergence on the
world stage of some of our young players, the future
of the national team looks bright and exciting. We
are close to winning at major tournaments– but we
have to get over the line some time and somehow!!
Thank you once again for the incredible support you
have given the team throughout the season so far
both home and away – it has been magnificent. Let’s
get behind Neil, his staff and the team today as we
try to earn another three points.
Enjoy the game and may I wish everyone a very
happy and healthy new year when it arrives.
COME ON YOU R’s
Luton Town
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
Like QPR, Luton have
been adapting to an
unexpected change of
management mid-season
after Nathan Jones
ended his second spell at
the helm to take over at
Southampton.
The Welshman had been
a pivotal figure in the
Hatters’ recent successes,
laying foundations for
back-to-back promotions
in 2018 and 2019 and
steering the team to the
Championship play-offs
last season.
However, the Hatters made
a slow start to the current
campaign, collecting two
points – and just a single
goal – in their first four
games before a 2-0 victory
at Swansea appeared to
spark them into life.
The Bedfordshire side
lost just one of their
next 10 – conceding
twice during the last 10
minutes against Wigan
at Kenilworth Road – but
that run also included
impressive wins over
Blackburn, Norwich and,
of course, QPR.
Luton were brought down
to earth with a bump in
late October as local rivals
Watford handed out a
4-0 thumping at Vicarage
Road, in which the visitors
also had defender Gabriel
Osho red-carded.
They shared draws against
both Sunderland and
Reading before regaining
the winning habit with a 1-0
triumph at Blackpool, which
turned out to be Jones’
final game in charge.
Club stalwart Mick
Harford took the reins
on a temporary basis for
the Hatters’ 2-0 defeat
at Stoke and a 1-1 draw
against Rotherham before
Rob Edwards’ appointment
was confirmed the
following week.
The Gaffer
Former Watford boss Rob
Edwards was appointed as
Nathan Jones’ successor
in the Hatters’ dugout in
November, just weeks after his
dismissal by their neighbours.
Edwards, who won 15 caps
for Wales, was a defender
with Aston Villa, Wolves,
Blackpool and Barnsley before
taking the decision to retire
from playing due to injury at the
age of just 30.
He returned to Molineux as
coach of Wolves’ Under-18
side and was later promoted
to a first-team role, taking
over as caretaker head coach
for two games during the
2016/17 campaign.
Edwards spent a year as
manager of hometown club AFC
Telford United before rejoining
Wolves as Under-23 coach
and going on to take charge of
England’s Under-16 side, but it
was his single season at Forest
Green Rovers that brought him
to Watford’s attention.
Rovers coasted to the
2021/22 League Two title
under Edwards’ guidance
and the Hornets moved quickly
to install him as head coach
in the summer, but his tenure
at Vicarage Road lasted only
11 games.
Danger Man
Signed from Barnsley last
summer, Carlton Morris
arrives at Loftus Road
as Luton’s leading scorer
following a purple patch of six
goals in as many games earlier
in the season.
Morris joined Norwich as an
11-year-old and starred in the
Canaries’ youth set-up, helping
them to win the FA Youth Cup
in 2013, but he was limited to
a single first-team appearance
and spent most of the next
eight years out on loan.
Oxford, York, Rotherham
and Shrewsbury were all
temporary destinations for
the striker – as well as a stint in
the Scottish Premiership with
Hamilton – prior to two loan
spells at MK Dons.
Having scored six times in 34
appearances for the Dons,
Morris signed a permanent
deal at Oakwell in January 2021
and he went on to find the net
regularly during his 18-month
spell with the Tykes.
His 16 goals included one
that secured Barnsley a 3-1
victory at Loftus Road, but he
departed the Yorkshire club
following their relegation from
the Championship last season.
1897:
Formed 12 years earlier,
Division One at their
jig across the pitch at
full-time.
1988:
Another last-gasp strike
– this time by Brian Stein
– earned the Hatters their
first major trophy as they
overcame a 2-1 deficit to
beat League Cup holders
Arsenal 3-2 at Wembley.
2007:
Placed in administration,
Luton were hit by
successive points
deductions – including a
hefty 30-point penalty
the following season for
financial irregularities –
and plunged out of the
Football League.
2016:
Nathan Jones’
appointment as
Luton’s revival as they
secured back-to-back
promotions and returned
LUTON TOWN 2
TUESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 1981
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
THERE was incredible media interest as Loftus
Road became the first ground in the world to stage
league football on plastic grass.
In his ‘Bush Telegraph’ programme editorial notes,
QPR secretary Ron Phillips set the scene by writing:
‘You are present when the first-ever Football
League game takes place on an artificial playing
surface – Omniturf, a name you’ll be hearing a lot
about from now onwards.
‘We predict that Omniturf will drastically change –
for the better – the manner in which the nation’s
clubs use their stadiums. However, it does not
necessarily follow that it will also change the way in
which teams play soccer.’
Midfield man Andy King gave Rangers the lead with
a close-range strike at the School End after 35
minutes. But back came Luton in the second half
with goals from Mark Aizlewood (71) and man of the
match Ricky Hill (84).
Terry Venables, who was QPR manager back in
1981, still has vivid recollections of how we made
international headlines.
Looking back, Venables said: “My chairman Jim
Gregory had always been worried about the terrible
problems we had with the pitch. We couldn’t get the
drainage right – even on a fairly nice day, it would
always be like a quagmire.
“Jim just didn’t know what to do. Whatever he spent,
he couldn’t seem to solve the problem. So he said
to me: ‘What about a plastic pitch?’
“We chatted for a while and it was a big step forward.
And he said: ‘There are no rules to say we can’t!’
“So I said: ‘Come on then – we’ll do it!’ And yes, we
went for it!”
Hazell, Roeder, Flanagan, Francis, Allen, King,
I can’t believe you just said that Tone!
Yeah, 30 years! I can remember all the
lads and the gear we used to wear. I had
played under boss Gerry Francis before
at Bristol Rovers, so just appearing for
Gerry’s beloved club QPR was a real
honour for me, because that was all
he talked about when he was in charge
of Bristol Rovers. I had fantastic times
with the R’s – everyone was so down to
earth. We had a terrific side and a very
good group of men, so it was an absolute
privilege to be part of it. Bardsley and
Wilson as full-backs, Barker and Wilkins in
that middle. If I got in, I played alongside
one of those two. Then Sinton and Impey
on the flanks. And it was amazing to see
Les Ferdinand come through, with all
his potential to become a top centreforward.
How good was he? Brilliant!
There was plenty of publicity at the
time, but did anyone realise how big
the Premier League was going to
become?
Oh, not at all. Our first game was on
the Monday night against Manchester
City away. When we went out on the
pitch beforehand to warm up, the
music ramped up and they had these
your eyebrows! It was like “Wow!” Andy
Sinton said: “What on earth is all this?”
They certainly upped the technical
presentation. We drew 1-1, battling back
from being a goal down. The stadium
was a bit weird as Man City were doing
some renovation work. One stand had
been knocked down and there was a big
board blocking off that area with a false
crowd painted on it.
You made 24 league appearances for
us in 1992/93 and also scored at home
to Spurs and away to Sheffield United.
Can you recall those goals?
Yes, I do remember my goals as I don’t
have that many to ponder! At Sheffield
United I just hit it and hoped. Then
against Tottenham, I shot down into
the ground and it skidded through
someone’s legs up into the top corner
and we won 4-1. I used to overcelebrate,
which was pathetic!
We also finished as top London club,
which was a meaningful milestone
back then…
Well, I am sure QPR would settle for that
in the modern era if they could get above
Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and all of
them. When I talk to my grandkids and
my son nowadays, I do drop it in that we
finished as top London club at Rangers.
Although I am not sure they’re listening
any more, it can become a bit boring! I
remember Gerry going on about when
the R’s were runners-up to Liverpool
in 1975/76. Oh my God, the times we
heard that. It was like: “Gerry, change the
proud of and he always spoke so fondly
Ray achieved so much in football and he
was always so positive: “Come on, yeah
you can do this! Come on, well done!”
Ray used to say that I would add another
three or four years to his career because
I used to have to chase his opposing
midfield man into the box. Then when
we got the ball, we would pass it to Ray
as quickly as we could because we knew
what he could produce. What a person he
was, honestly! Let me tell you a story. Ray
was having a wardrobe change one day
and he said to me: “Ollie, I’ve got some
clothes in the car. You’re the same size
as me. Just take them, will you? But don’t
tell anyone – if you don’t like them, then
give them to a charity shop.” Anyway
I got home, looked in these bags and
found six top-quality suits plus 15 shirts.
So I went from being the worst dressed
player at QPR to suddenly being the best
dressed! The lads said: “Wow! Look at
you!” And I replied: “Yeah, Ray gave me
this.” However, Ray went bright red and
said: “Ollie, you didn’t have to tell them
that.” So I said: “Of course I did, Ray. I’m
proud to wear your gear mate!”
When Loftus Road was full back then,
the atmosphere was electric…
It is a special place, my favourite ground
of all. The R’s fans have always been so
loyal, they know what they want, they
see it, they love it and they keep coming
back. But the crowd were so close to the
pitch that there was no place for players
to hide. I would hear: “Come on ’Olloway,
give it to Wilkins!” So I would shout back:
“I’ll try, I’ll try. Don’t worry!”
Bringing the story up to date, you have
a book out called ‘How to Be a Football
Manager’. Is there much QPR content?
Loads of it. Mentions of Gianni Paladini,
our pre-season tour to Ibiza which was a
nightmare, orienteering with Kevin Gallen
and Marc Bircham with their antics etc
etc. So there is lots of fun in the book and
hopefully people will enjoy reading it.
Well, the general verdict on
that the view is just as good as
we had hoped it would be. Our
apologies, however, must go
to the season ticket holders
who had difficulty in obtaining
entrance to the ground at the
last match due to the fact that
their turnstiles were incorrectly
signposted. We have put this
right and you should have no
trouble in gaining entry to the
foreseen until the first match
took place!
‘We received a few complaints
that the turnstiles in the new
discussed this with Turnstile
that install turnstiles all over
the country. They confirm that
the width of 1ft 3in is now the
adopted width throughout
Britain for turnstile openings and
similar installations are operating
satisfactorily at Crystal Palace
FC, West Ham United FC and
the London Welsh rugby club,
for example. Wider turnstiles,
however, are available at our
HEROES
STAN BOWLES VS
BRANN BERGEN
WEDNESDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER 1976
UEFA CUP FIRST ROUND SECOND LEG
STAN BOWLES matched his first leg hattrick
against Brann Bergen by scoring
another trio of goals as Rangers cantered
to a 7-0 victory in our first ever away match in
European competition.
Before the match in Bergen, Bowles said: “I was
very disappointed not to be included in the England
squad for the recent World Cup qualifier against
Finland. I honestly believe that I have never played
better than this at the start of a season.
44 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
“I know I have to maintain my form to make sure
of catching (England manager) Don Revie’s eye
and to keep him thinking about me.
“When Brann Bergen played at Loftus Road two
weeks ago, I collected a hat-trick and I will be
looking for another one this time. I’ll be bitterly
upset if I don’t get at least one goal.
“There is no way we can lose this game. And with
the 4-0 lead we already have from the first leg, we
must be capable of knocking in a few more goals.”
It was a cool evening in Norway, with the compact
stadium set picturesquely beneath some treelined
mountains. The pitch was firm and it seemed
to suit QPR’s passing style as they turned on the
style, watched by a crowd of 11,527.
After scoring on 68, 84 and 88 minutes, Bowles
said: “I know it looked easy out there, but goals
are never simple to score. Anyway, I feel there’ll
be no stopping me now.”
The Daily Mirror headline was “BOWLES BLITZ!”
and reporter Harry Miller wrote: “Stan Bowles
kept his promise to blitz Bergen with a second
hat-trick as Queen’s Park Rangers romped to a
seven-goal UEFA Cup victory here last night.”
Meanwhile, Bob Driscoll wrote in The Sun:
“Queen’s Park Rangers completed the UEFA Cup
slaughter of Norwegian amateurs Brann Bergen
last night as humanely as possible with seven
more goals in Norway. And once again the chief
executioner was the irrepressible Stan Bowles.
“Bowles-the-goals kept his audacious pre-match
promise to score a hat-trick to match the one he
got in the first leg.”
INTERVIEW: LENNIE HARVEY
Teddy Lawrence
Position: Forward
From: Queen’s Park
Joined QPR: Age 9
Pre-Match Meal: Pasta with olive oil
Favourite social media platform: YouTube
Pre-Match Song: The Don by Nas
How did you get scouted?
Playing at a school tournament. I was player of
the tournament and a QPR scout gave my PE
teacher a contact number so I got a trial at the
academy and, after two weeks of a six-week trial,
I got accepted!
What are your strengths as a player and what
do you need to work on?
My strengths are creating opportunities,
dribbling past players, crossing the ball and
scoring goals. I would like to work on crossing
with both feet, so defenders find it harder to play
against when I’m running down the by-line.
What’s the highlight of your career so far?
It has to be scoring at Luton’s Kenilworth
Road for QPR U21s, which I’m sure would have
put a smile on fans’ faces! Another highlight
would be playing for Scotland against England in
an U16 fixture.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
Adel Taarabt as he had the ability to captivate
crowds with tricks and flicks, however he also had
a very effective style of play, getting him many
goals and assists.
When was the first football match you
attended?
Ohhh Bobby Zamoraaaaaa. QPR 1 Derby 0 to
send the R’s to the Premier League. What a great
day for the club and hopefully it will come again!
Who’s had the greatest influence on your
career and why?
My Dad. He has instilled a good type of attitude
in me, not just as a player, but a person and
he often shows me skills that dazzle me even
though he’s getting older! I have gained good
technical ability from having a skilful Dad.
What’s the best aspect of being a QPR player?
Being from the local area, I’m very proud to play
for my local team and I know lots of QPR fans so I
hope to make them proud!
Columnist
SAM TAYLOR
‘R’ GENERATION WRITER SAM TAYLOR
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS-ON IN W12
Lionel Messi has finally fulfilled his
childhood dream of lifting the World Cup.
In what was perhaps the greatest final in
World Cup history, Argentina pipped France
to the crown on penalties.
In the UK, it has been recorded that almost
20 million people tuned in to watch the game.
I would go as far as to say the majority of
those 20 million people were mostly focused
on what they were watching. The history
happening before their eyes. The greatest
player of all time becoming solidified in
football folklore. A final for the ages. I would
also say that one person out of that 20
million – myself – was not entirely focused on
the proceedings in front of him but was lost
thinking instead: Where does QPR come into
all of this? A thought I would fairly assume
was not shared by those 20 million.
As Lionel Messi’s World Cup journey came
to an end, a new (equally important) era was
beginning in Shepherd’s Bush with the arrival
of Neil Critchley as our new head coach. I
thought we looked really impressive against
Preston. I thought each player on the pitch
was working hard to make an impact on the
new manager and that definitely contributed
to the quality of the performance. Similarly,
with Argentina, it would be hard to argue
that their united desire to fulfil Messi’s
narrative was not a massive driving force in
their success as a team. Another example
of mentality in the World Cup was Brazil.
They were playing probably the best football
out of anyone, but it seemed they got a bit
too comfortable and were shaken up by the
sheer determination of Croatia. Ilias Chair’s
Morocco were most definitely the same
and hopefully Ilias can bring some of that
Moroccan fighting spirit back with him to
Loftus Road.
I think there were definitely question marks
after Mick Beale’s departure, as to how the
players would respond. There was every
possibility that the mood would be low and
the fight would deflate a bit. But post-Preston
it became pretty clear that’s not the case.
The drive has been reignited. We know fully
well that the Championship is not simply
about who’s the better team. We’ve had
tons of games where we were the better
team and lost. Equally, we’ve had plenty of
tough afternoons where we’ve rescued a win
against a better side.
So I think a big test for Critchley will be about
man-management with this squad. It goes
without saying that this QPR team has quality,
but the extra edge is the mental one, an edge
that needs to be super sharp to maintain a
promotion push.
the FA Cup final that season.
At the start of the following
campaign, when he was 13,
Richard resolved to save a
record of every QPR game
and has made good on that
promise four decades on.
He remains grateful to his Mum,
who posted match reports to
him during his student days and
still looks out for QPR-related
media coverage now!
“There are great moments in
the club’s history,” said Richard.
“I think especially of the 1986
Milk Cup run, and promotions
in 1983, 2004, 2011 and 2014,
and occasions in football
history such as Manchester
City winning the title against us
in 2012, a match at which my
son was the QPR mascot.
“More unusual are tabloid
rumours about players we were
supposedly chasing, including
Glenn Hoddle (1983) and Paul
Gascoigne (1995).
“A particular favourite was
Frank Rijkaard in 1995 – a player
I always liked and would have
loved to see at QPR.”
memorabilia? If so, we’d love to see some photos and hear
more about it – please email your contributions to us at
BILLERICAY TOWN 6
QPR FC WOMEN 3
SKIPPER Vicky Grieve was given a guard of
honour as she led QPR out for the final time
in their FA Women’s National League Plate
tie at Billericay Town.
The defender is leaving Rangers after six
years at the club – and sadly she was unable
to bow out with a win as Billericay triumphed
in a high-scoring game.
Amelia Cutler, Melanie Hall and Lauren
Jordinson all found the net for the R’s, but
Ruby Sealey and Zoe Rushen both scored
twice for the home side, with Lucy Jones and
Beau Parker also on target.
Rangers, who exited the competition
following that defeat, were denied the
opportunity to bounce back immediately as
their final scheduled league game prior to
Christmas, against Norwich, was postponed
due to bad weather.
The team return to action on Sunday
8th January, when they take on AFC
Wimbledon at Hanwell Town’s Powerday
Stadium (kick-off 2pm).
PLAYERS HELP TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY AT CHRISTMAS
QPR players brought some Christmas cheer
to youngsters at Jack Tizard School with a
delivery of presents and essential supplies
prior to the holiday season.
Both the men’s and women’s first-team squads
– along with club mascot Jude the Cat – visited
the school for children with severe learning
difficulties on South Africa Road.
They also made a similar trip to The Hub@75
– a Hammersmith & Fulham-led foodbank just
around the corner in Bloemfontein Road.
Many of the gifts and food parcels were
donated by QPR fans, players and director of
football Les Ferdinand, along with QPR in the
Community Trust.
Trust events manager Justin Stone said:
“Since Covid, we’ve seen a lot more people
get in touch with the club and Trust asking for
support, and we are doing all we can to engage
with as many people as possible.
“We are here to support the whole community,
not just QPR fans. The generosity shown by
supporters at our recent foodbank collection
against Burnley was hugely appreciated, as
was the amount of food supplies and presents
donated by our players and staff members.
“Hopefully their support can make life a little
easier for certain families over the festive
period.”
Media Voice
IAN MCCULLOUGH, SENIOR WRITER AT WEST LONDON
SPORT, SHARES HIS THOUGHTS…
This column was due to be about a
winning start to the Neil Critchley era at
Loftus Road.
However, the evening after the win at Preston
I received gut-wrenching news of the sudden
death of the man responsible for me being a
QPR fan – so please forgive my self-indulgence.
Most of you reading this won’t have heard of
Adrian McBrearty.
But anyone who sits in the vicinity of R Block
in the Stanley Bowles Stand will recognise him
as the leader of the Fez Brigade.
He sat right near the corner flag, offering
‘gentle’ encouragement to assistant referees
and opposition players each week and was
one of life’s genuine characters. For me, he
was simply my best mate who I have known
since I was seven.
It was that same gentle encouragement he
reserves for the poor soul running the line
that turned me from being a young Arsenal
fan to the only QPR supporter in my family –
what a great life choice that turned out to be!
My role at West London Sport often involves
travelling around the country covering
Rangers and Ade was often in the car with
me on those long trips, building up his loyalty
points with visits to exotic places such
as Cardiff, Bristol, Nottingham, Barnsley,
Swansea, and Blackburn.
I’d give him the keys before the game so he
could wait for me in the car afterwards and
on the journey home we’d dissect the game
before attention usually turned to ante-post
debates for the next Cheltenham festival.
How I am going to miss those days.
Ade was due to be in the car with me to
Deepdale, but the freezing weather, Rangers’
dip in form and a touch of man flu saw him
opt against it, telling me on the phone as I
drove up the M6: ‘they will win now because I
won’t be there’.
It was the last time we spoke.
His passing leaves a huge hole in the lives of
myself and many of his good friends at Loftus
Road and beyond.
But not as much as it will for his beautiful
children, Liam, Lily and Connie. All three have
all been ‘brainwashed’ the right way and are
very much part of the Fez Gang, which Ade
set up to give Ilias Chair a boost following his
AFCON disappointment last year.
It was fitting he got to celebrate a QPR win
on the last full day of his life, but R Block will
never be the same again.
