Results
MCI and SWA indices (fig) were generated using the formulas mentioned in equation 1,2 and
3 respectively. MCI is classified into extreme, severe, moderate and mild categories. As
mentioned by Copernicus European Drought Observatory, SMA values below -1 and greater
than or equal to -2 represent drier than normal condition, -1 to 1 is normal, above 1 and less or
equal to 2 represent wetter than normal condition. Negative anomalies of SMA and extreme,
severe and moderate conditions of MCI are associated with drought conditions since soil
moisture content is strongly connected to plant biomass accumulation in many environments
where water availability is the main limiting factor. The MCI and SMA combined with
dryspell, Progressive Difference Normalized Vegetation Index (PDNDVI) offer better
assessment of prevailing drought conditions.
Conclusion
Two indices MCI and SMA are developed using SMI of Copernicus Global Land Service
which could be used for drought monitoring.
