Maximize the Production of Blackgram Through Furrow Irrigated Raised
Bed Planting Methods Under Aberrated Climatic Regions

Blackgram (Vigna mungo.) is an important economic pulse crop and considered as a good
source of protein for human being. Blackgram has been a predominant crop in Madhya
Pradesh especially in Chhatarpur district which accounts for 65.1% (2, 61,450 ha) area under
Blackgram Cultivation. The district Chhatarpur falls under central portion on the plateau of
Bundelkhand region in Madhya Pradesh. and lies between north latitudes 240 06’ and 250
20’ and longitude 790 59’ and 800 26 East. Current average productivity of the crop in the
district is 540 kg per ha as against the state and national productivity of 730 and 585 kg per
ha respectively. Though there are several factors for low production and productivity of
blackgram in the district, however, lower seed replacement with improved varieties and
uncertainty of rainfall is crucial one. Because climate change during the last decade, the
rainfall pattern and distribution has exhibited frequent aberrations with extreme situation of
sudden downpour or long dry spells entailing in to severe stress on blackgram crop that results
reduction in yield. Keeping the above facts, the act of Furrow Irrigated Raised Bed Planter
and improved variety of blackgram PU 31 and IPU 2-43 strategies for minimizing risk of crop
failure and stabilizing blackgram production was felt. Under such circumstances, KVK
Chhatarpur of Madhya Pradesh introduced Furrrow Irrigated raised bed planter equipment to
line sowing of Blackgram through front line demonstration at farmer’s field under NICRA
Village. These demonstrations brought out enhancement in yield of Blackgram as 7.5 q/ha
over farmers practice 4.2 q/ha. The benefit cost ratio was recorded as 1: 2.6 as compared to
farmers practices 1:1.7. The ridge and furrow equipment save the soil moisture through
