Results
Some common design principles of the cropping systems discerned during the workshop have
implications for climate resilience. It includes the regular harvest of edible crops from its
multi-tire mix of crops and its varieties viz. millets/cereals, pulses, oilseeds and vegetables,
soil cover for seven to nine months, resource utilization complementarity between main crops
and companion crops and use of border crops as windbreak and pest infestation barriers.
Multiple harvesting of different crops from two to three months after sowing, gave food and
nutrition security for the rainfed farmers along with stable source income. Inbuild resilience
in the traditional multi cropping system reduced the risk of crop failure due to variability in
rainfall and pest and disease infestation.
Conclusion
This study opens up region-specific traditional alternatives for mainstream cropping systems
with climate resilience built into. These rainfed mixed-multi-cropping systems have potential
applications in addressing existing crises in our agri-food systems, farmer livelihoods and
could inform the practice and the public policy of rainfed area agriculture.
