Thismight not always be realistic given the immense economic gainsthat the BRI-sponsored infrastructure can bring to a country.Nevertheless, China could provide financial incentives to thesecountries’ local governments or could also implement bindingregulations to which Chinese investors and developers shouldadhere.An alternative would be to align the implementation of the BRI withthe UN Sustainable Development Goals. This was alreadymentioned during China’s 2017 speech on the BRI, but in order toachieve tangible results, monitoring is necessary. This not onlyencourages community engagement but also poses benefits toChina as it would reinforce public trust in investment and mightresult in more positive attitudes regarding the BRI.
