Korea are women — one of thehighest gender ratios in the world,combined with low sentencingrates for these crimes. Recently in Iran, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was brutallybeaten and killed by the regime'smorality police for not wearing ahijab. This occurred just weeksafter Iran’s hardline president,Ebrahim Raisi, ordered acrackdown on women’s rights andcalled for stricter enforcement ofthe country’s mandatory dresscode,P A G E 2 1
which has required all women towear the hijab head-covering sincethe 1979 Islamic revolution. And inthe US, where the historical Roe vWade decision was overturned on24 June 2022 by the SupremeCourt, pregnant people in at least13 states across the country willnot be able to have the right to asafe and leal abortion, including incases of rape and incest.HUMANRIGHTS AREWOMEN'SRIGHTSWomen of South Korea will belooking to their new president forchange now more than ever inthese unprecedented times. If YoonSuk-yeol wants to effect realchange in his country, he will needto first acknowledge the centuriesdeepgender discrimination thathas happened under the guide ofpoliticians.
