The Office of Non-Credit and Continuing Education (ONCE) of Temple University is 

committed to providing quality, professional, and accessible education, along with 

lifelong learning and training opportunities. Many of the non-credit courses scheduled 

for Spring 2023 will continue to be held online, although we do have some courses that

INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALING 

If you have ever wanted to try journaling, this course will provide answers to your every question. 

You will discover the different types of journaling and many journaling techniques, exercises, tools 

and resources. You will explore a seven-step process that will ease you into writing a journal. You 

will get detailed instructions on developing, decorating, and customizing your journal, and you 

will learn exciting new ways to express yourself and develop your creativity.

DRAWING FOR THE ABSOLUTE BEGINNER 

If you’ve always been interested in drawing but don’t really know how to get started, then this is the 

course for you. Gain a solid foundation and understanding of the basics of drawing and become the 

artist you’ve always dreamed you could be! You’ll become intimately familiar with paper types, drawing 

styles, rendering techniques, and the basic principles of perspective, layout, design, lighting, volume, 

and space. If you have an interest in learning what it’s like to draw or would love to increase your 

current knowledge in the field of art and illustrating, then this course aims to fulfill all of your needs.

LOOK-SEE ART: PORTRAITURE OF AND FOR THE PEOPLE* 

Taught by: Lynn Berkowitz, MFA, BFA 

This class features key artists who chose—and choose—to observe people who are often overlooked 

and move them into focus. Inspired by the recent National Portrait Gallery’s special exhibition, Hung 

Liu: Portraits of Promised Lands, we kick off the discussion with an open and frank look at Liu’s work 

from the exhibition while subsequent sessions consider the portrait paintings of the Realists Gustave 

Courbet, Édouard Manet, the Ashcan School, and Black figurative artists Jordan Casteel and Kehinde 

Wiley among others. We will approach each related era with an awareness of the life and times that the 

artist lived in (and through) with a growing appreciation of questioning and considering new ways of 

seeing and understanding.

This art appreciation course explores still life, genre, and super-sized installation depictions of food 

and dining by artists as varied as Arcimboldo, Cézanne, Matisse, and Judy Chicago. Featuring ravishing 

details that range from the symbolic to the social, our discussion centers on an array of artists, ‘isms, 

media, and scale that dramatically connects our understanding of eating rituals from the past to the 

present. A blending of lecture and artful conversation contributes to learning for all.

BEGINNING WRITER’S WORKSHOP 

Some of the best works of fiction and nonfiction were crafted in a writer’s workshop. This online 

course will help you write your own creative piece. Like a true writing workshop, you will learn 

literary techniques, peer review a classmate’s work, and receive constructive criticism on your 

work. In addition, you will learn how to move your work from the prewriting stage to editing and 

final revision. You will also learn how to use literary devices, meaningful dialogue, and imagery 

in your different drafts. By the end of this online workshop, you will have a thoroughly developed 

creative writing piece. You might even be ready for publication!

Join us in reading five stories of love, mythic, mystic, liberating and enslaving. We begin with 

Ivan Turgenev’s classic tale of First Love. We continue with E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View, 

his hopeful novel of young romance. Love suffers as the politics of patriarchal colonialism infect 

a marriage in Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys’ trenchant response to Jane Eyre. It suffers and 

mythically heals in war-torn Cyprus in Elif Shafak’s The Island of Missing Trees. It’s a mystery to 

Lucy in her reflection on a haunting marriage in Booker-nominee Elizabeth Strout’s Oh William!

DIGITAL PHOTOGAPHY 

DISCOVER DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 

This course is designed for the novice photographer with no previous experience with digital 

cameras. This course will teach you all about digital cameras, from DSLRs to smart phone 

cameras and what different equipment is used for. You will learn about different display methods 

for your camera, including sizing, print options, online storage, and how social media factors into 

digital photography. If you have old slides, negatives, or prints, this course will also teach you how 

to scan those “old school” photo assets. After completing the course, you will understand how the 

process of composing photos has changed with the evolving capabilities of digital photography.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING 

Learn to use digital editing techniques to show off your photos and memorabilia. Using Photoshop 

Elements, this course will teach you how to make the most of your scrapbooking talents and

RHONE WINES – THE SPLIT PERSONALITY OF THE RHONE REGION*

The Rhone wine region is one of the premier regions in France with a long, storied history. It offers 

great quality along with great value. In Paris, every bistro offers good values from the Rhone. Taste 

and discover the differences between the northern and southern Rhone regions largely due to 

the terroir and grape varieties. The different varietal makeup in each region features the stylistic 

preferences of the winemakers. Don’t miss this one!

Join us for a tour of some of Italy’s finest wines. We will select wines from some of the best offerings 

of Italy’s wine producing regions. Wines like Barbaresco, Barolo, Amarone, Super Tuscan, Aglianico, 

Nero d’ Avola, a choice white, and a dessert wine. We’ll explore the Italian wine regulations, wine 

vocabulary, and soils that affect the resulting wine.

THE LURE OF LOIRE*

The Loire Valley is the home of the chateaux of kings. It is the most diverse wine region in France 

yet not very well known. Every style of wine, from snappy sparkling wines to dry whites, to roses, 

reds, to long-lived sweet dessert wines is made here. We will sample wines from some of the more 

famous sub-regions such as Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, and Vouvray and from some equally delicious 

lesser-known wines from Muscadet, Chinon and Savennieres. Come be enchanted by the lure of

INTRODUCTION TO BEEKEEPING 

Taught by: Vincent Aloyo 

This course will inform potential beekeepers of the joys and responsibilities of successful 

beekeeping. Honeybees have pests and diseases that will kill them without the beekeeper’s help. 

During the first weekend, you’ll learn about apiary location requirements, how to obtain bees, 

essential equipment as well as important aspects of honeybee biology. This early start allows you 

to choose and order your beehive and bees at a time when they are readily available. During the 

second weekend, closer to the time that you will obtain your bees, we will discuss how to start and 

care for your new bee colony. Additional topics include seasonal management, important sources 

of nectar and pollen, honey production and harvesting. Please bring a bagged lunch as we will 

have a working lunch for all class sessions.

ANALYZE YOUR GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE 

Taught by: Robert Dougan 

You drive by that property again and say, “I wish my home looked like that!” So where do you start? 

First you must be able to analyze your property. This course will enable you to create a base plan of 

your property’s existing elements and how to evaluate your property’s environmental conditions in 

order to ensure the success of your new design. Whether you seek to perform landscape magic by 

transforming a new site or you are refreshing an established one, this course will help you to start at 

square one and determine what you have to work with.

Taught by: Ruth MacCarthy 

Learn how to identify many types of cool weather annuals, spring-flowering perennials, bulbs and 

wildflowers. Many of these plants have attractive foliage and other unique characteristics that provide 

interest when the plants are not in bloom. Explore what types of herbaceous plants might best work in 

your home garden and landscape. Care and proper culture will be discussed. Plants native to our area 

will be noted.

Study the variety of trees, shrubs, and vines that form the foundation of our natural and designed 

landscapes. Learn how to identify the many different types and how each is best used in the

This course will provide you with an introduction to the principles and processes of landscape design. 

Now that you’ve analyzed your garden and landscape and have learned about the various types of 

herbaceous and woody plants, learn how to combine flowers, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers into an 

attractive landscape. You will receive an overview of the design process, including analysis of existing 

environmental conditions and identification of specific design goals. You will also be introduced to 

design principles and elements, including pavements, walls, fences, plants. etc.

Develop the basic skills of designing with flowers and foliage—fresh, dried, and silk. Learn how to

Learn more advanced techniques for creating lovely floral arrangements, including combining

Responding to the classical influences and updating the old masters’ way with flowers is a particular 

joy in the spring. Learn the distinctive patterns of flower placement, color harmonies, containers, 

and flower types for the pleasant outcome of the Dutch and Flemish, French, and Victorian styles of 

European flower arranging. We will also apply the influences of the Williamsburg and Colonial styles 

of the New World. Weekly supplies/materials fee is paid at the time of registration. Please bring floral

THE BUSINESS SIDE OF FLORAL ARRANGING 

Taught by: Sandy Sutliff 

Now that you’ve taken hands-on floral arranging courses and have developed the skills in creating 

and designing arrangements, are you considering taking it one step further? This course introduces 

students to the business side of floral design. Receive an overview of what it’s like to own a retail 

florist shop. Engages in topics such as starting the business, wire services, the point of sale (POS) 

system, accounting, human resources, managing the busy seasons, managing the slow season, 

merchandising, and pricing goods to make a profit. Discover all of the facets the business side of floral 

design has and how to manage them. NOTE: This course is not a substitute for professional financial

YOGA IN THE GARDENS

Join us in the Ambler Arboretum to welcome the spring flowers and spring weather. Breathe in the 

fresh air while being immersed in the sounds, sights, and smells of nature. The session will be held 

rain or shine—indoor space will be used in case of inclement weather. Dress comfortably, wear layers, 

bring your yoga mat, props, and water bottle. From beginners to advanced, all levels are welcome.
