It’s a Magical World, Hobbes,
ole buddy – let’s go Exploring! -
Calvin from the Calvin & Hobbes
Comic Strip.
I continue to encourage each of
us to “Fill your life with Experiences,
not things. Have stories to
share and laughs to share”
The Fall Board of Directors
meeting in beautiful Golden,
Colorado was an excellent experience
for all who attended. Thank
you again to the Colorado JCI Senate
and Region VIII for executing my
dream to have a meeting there!
Now onto the holiday season, I
will attend the Massachusetts and
Arizona holiday gathering as well
as recently attending the Grinchmas
celebration with the Florida Senate.
I have been fortunate to attend 5 or
6 times that warm holiday celebration
and was not disappointed. I do
hope many will share the holiday
spirit by participating in the Wreaths
Across America program to support
our Veterans! What a beautiful way
to honor them during the holiday
seasons.
January is around the corner and
we will Experience the Senate with
our Winter BOD Meeting in Kenner,
LA near New Orleans. Oh, what
a fun experience in a great social
unique location. I hope many of
you that have not attended in the
past will join us for this meeting. It
is not too late. Then we will soon
begin the Spring region meetings
across the country.
As we will celebrate the mid-year
point of the year, it will be time to
celebrate our All-stars to date recognizing
those who have planned and
executed those plans, well to date.
There is still time to execute your
plan as that will only be the mid-year!
We recognized Senators by highlighting
Experiences of the Senate
at Fall BOD and other meetings this
first half and will continue through
the Region Spring Meetings. What
experience in the Senate makes you
proud and joyful? What drives you
to Experience the Senate? Be ready
to share those experiences. Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year.
May the Holiday joy continue to
be with you in 2023.

Wow, I can’t believe the “Experience
the Senate” year is almost
half over and the Holidays are
upon us! Where does the time
go? I have enjoyed my travels this
first half of the year and seeing
everyone.
At the Fall Board Meeting in
Golden, Colorado the bid by the
Texas Senate to host the Fall 2023
Davis #38376. We have also
received a letter of intent from
the South Carolina Senate to host
the Winter 2024 meeting. More
Your Legal Counsel has been
busy this second trimester of
this Experience the Senate year,
pondering the imponderable and
reviewing the unreviewable. Rest
assured, as this holiday season approaches,
that from the ivory tower
of legal perspective all appears
well with the US JCI Senate! No
lawsuits, liens or attachments have
been brought to the attention of
those with attention.
ADMINISTRATIVE
VICE PRESIDENT
holiday season – although I am
writing and not speaking as a matter
of fact – I wish, without implying
or conveying any contractual obligation
on the part of this writer
to deliver, that each of you, both
individually and collectively, experience
and enjoy, to whatever
extent you feel comfortable experiencing
and enjoying if that
extent is not the fullest level of experience
and enjoyment possible,
the fun, love and joy to be experienced
and enjoyed during
this holiday season, without or
implying, of course, that there
exists, in reality or in your mind,
assuming that you have a mind,
such fun, love and joy.
CHAIRMAN OF THE
BOARD
Mike Andrews #58312
andrewsmike25@yahoo.com
As we enter into the holiday
season, we should take time to
reflect on the first half of this Experience
the Senate year. President
Susan #58143 has been doing an
outstanding job promoting and Experiencing
the Senate. I hope that
each of you take the time in the
next few months to experience a
state, regional or national meeting.
Invite a member that you haven’t
seen in awhile to go with you so
that they can also experience all
the Senate has to offer.
As Chairman of the Board, it is
my responsibility to chair the Nominating
and Elections Committee for
the next Senate administrative year.
If you are interested in seeking an
elected office for the US JCI Senate
- National Region Vice President,
Secretary, Treasurer, Administrative
Vice President and President
for the 2023-2024 year and would
like to have your name announced
at the Winter Board of Directors’
meeting in Kenner, LA, you must
have your application and all other
applicable forms sent to me postmarked
or e-mailed to me no later
than January 2, 2023. Checks for
filing fees made payable to the US
someone without family to share
While attending the ASAC
(Association of Senators of
the Americas and Caribbean)
Encounter in Trinidad, we had
the opportunity to visit Mount St.
Benedict Abbey. We were blessed
to have a private Mass offered for
our group, which was comprised
of Senators from sixteen different
countries. I was deeply moved
by this experience…readings in
English, impromptu singing in
Spanish, the priest saying Mass
incorporating both languages
and everyone joyfully worshipping
together. As a group we
were Catholics and non-Catholics,
English and non-English
speaking and yet we were all united
in our belief that “Faith in God
gives meaning and purpose to
human life.”
As Senators, we may not all
have the same religious views or
believe in the same God, but we
are able to turn to and trust in our
own Higher Power. This holiday
season spend time in prayer, giving
thanks for the blessings in your life.
A reminder, information for the
Chaplain’s Report in the E-News is
due the 11 th and 27 th of each month.
When reporting the passing of a
Senator, please include a photo
that can be used at the Memorial
Service in June.
I wish you Merry Christmas,
Happy Hanukkah and Happy
Kwanzaa.
for Kids, and founded Jaycees TGIF.
Lorain is a Life Member of the
Virginia Jaycees. She embodied the
heart and soul of our chapter, leading
it into the future as a household name
that the community could count on
for years to come. From Christmas parades and Memorial Day
flags, to state convention traditions that are still remembered, she
was instrumental to it all.
After exhausting out of the Jaycees, Lorain has continued service
through the Kiwanis, while never leaving the Jaycee movement
by supporting various chapters with the use of her business for
meetings and many large projects, such as Womanless Beauty
Pageant, JaySeas Fest, and the Rooster Reunion.
George Alcarez, 80796, Virginia,
he joined the Virginia Beach Jaycees
in 1987. He served his local chapter
as State Director. He has received
several awards, including the JCI
USA Outstanding Chapter Award
for the East Coast Surfing Championships
in 2019 and the Virginia
Jaycees Outstanding Project Awards
in 2021.
George is a Life Member of the
Virginia Jaycees. He has spent his
lifetime after aging out as an active
Jaycee and has been involved with
ECSC – East Coast Surfing Championship
and his local Chapter. His leadership initiative and ability
to unify the community are the reasons the East Coast Surfing
Championships has continued and flourished for 60 years.
Jin Teh, #80790, Virginia, he
joined the Jaycees in 1990. He held
many offices including local Chapter
President. He has chaired successful
projects including BINGO
bi-weekly fundraiser. Leukemia
Bowl, Beer Pour, the NFL Punt,
Pass, and Kick and the MLB Pitch,
Hit and Run events.
As an originating member of the
expansion Hampton Jaycees, Jin
was instrumental in the survival
of the chapter, ultimately serving
as President. He played a significant
part in the structure and recruitment that would propel the
chapter into the future.
Jin earned President of the Year honors shortly before exhausting,
his chapter and its members today, as still in his debt for his
devotion and dedication to the Jaycee cause.
Elizabeth Balogh, #80738,
Delaware, has been a Jaycee for
seventeen years. She is the current
president of the New Castle Jaycees.
She has served in this position
twice. She was also a member of
the Dover Jaycees where she was
involved actively for several years.
Elizabeth came back to New Castle
JCI chapter and started her service at
the state level as State Vice President
in 2015, State Director in 2016, State
President in 2018, and Chairman of
the Board in 2019. Elizabeth then
went on to serve the US JCI as Youth
Program Manager in 20-21. Elizabeth serves where she is needed
and continues to be an example to Delaware and the US that she
has much to offer while supporting others and leading the way.
Elizabeth was thrilled to receive her Senator honor with her family
in attendance at the Region II/III Social in August in Pennsylvania.
Aside from the Jaycees, Elizabeth enjoys playing billiards, visiting
historic sites, museums, and religious shrines with her significant
other, Andy Rokita. She lives and works in Dover, Delaware.
NEW SENATORS
Jeff Woods, #80158, Tennessee,
he joined the Shelbyville Jaycees and
began attending and working on their
many projects. He then relocated
to Memphis, where he joined the
Memphis Jaycees. At that time he
met on of his closest friends, Liz
Eckles, who drug him to his first State
Jaycee Conference. He immediately
became active in the state organization.
Liz and him would travel the
state logging many miles attending
projects and meetings.
Jeff served in many capacities on
the state level always being someone the State Presidents could
count on.
Jeff currently resides in Arkansas with his fiance', Valerie, but
continues to attend and support the Tennessee Jaycees and Senate.
Justin Bank, #80793, Colorado, he
is an americana artist from Denver. A
gifted singer, songwriter and guitarist
with a quirky-yet-infective sense
of humor. With his updated rootsrock-flavored
music, he has a broad
variety of influences, but they all
feel like, well, home.
Justin was a past Denver Chapter
President. He was a longtime
supporter of the Denver and Colorado
Jaycees and JCI Senate. He is
currently residing in his hometown
of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Justin was the musical entertainment for US JCI Senate Fall
Board Meeting in Golden, Colorado.
Eurika Ellison, #80798, West
Virginia, joined the Ohio Valley
Jaycees in 2014, and began getting
active immediately. As is the case
with nearly every senator, Eurika’s
Jaycee experience was punctuated
by stepping up when needed. Soon
after joining she volunteered to serve
on the committee for the Safety Days
project. But when the committee
chair was unable to continue due
to work issues, Eurika stepped up
to chair.
A year later, when the chapter
secretary was unable to attend business meetings, Eurika stepped
up again to fill in. The following years found Eurika serving in
leadership roles as Treasurer and Local Chapter President.
Then in 2019, the president of the West Virginia Jaycees was
forced to resign when his employer relocated him to South Carolina.
Eurika Ellison again stepped up to finish his term as the 76 th State
President. She cites her greatest accomplishment as straightening
out the old Camp Jaycee fund. Thanks to her efforts donations
once again flowed to the parent non-profit organization.
Eurika, a paralegal for a large law firm, is looking forward to
becoming active in the WV JCI Senate and hopes one day to help
re-establish a chapter in her hometown of Weirton.
Angie Caterelli #80780, Lake
Placid, Florida joined the Lake Placid
Jaycees in 2015. So that’s about 7
years of volunteering, growing in
leadership, and meeting some outstanding
and influential individuals.
Angie held many offices including
Chapter Vice President, Internal VP,
and State Vice President. She attended
quite a few conferences including State,
and National, as well as traveling to
another States conference and attend
the Greater Southern States Institute
Trainings at Camp Discovery in
Gainesboro, TN!
Angie was very surprised and excited for her new venture into the
Senator world! She is thankful to the Florida Senate and Lake Placid
Jaycees for giving her the opportunity to be a part of these amazing
organizations, and looks forward to what the future holds for all of us!
Stephenie Barrett, #80815,
Colorado, she is a mother of two
amazing daughters and a grandmother
of two wonderful
granddaughters, plus she is borrowing
a few bonus grandchildren. She works
as a technical writer and a web designer.
She
is finishing up a master degree in
English language literature.
Stephenie was a Past President of
the Denver Jaycees.
Stephenie lives in Arvade, Colorado,
and comes from Cheyenne, Wyoming.
EDITOR
TANIS FRIEDMAN #70297
mentors@usjcisenate.org
I really enjoy reading/editing
the articles before they go to
print. With the cut in the number
of words used, editing will fly
by. However, Senate #’s are still
required, spell check is a useful
tool, roman numerals is the numeral
system to be used and less commas
are better.
Please keep sending your articles
in!!!!
Greetings US JCI Senate
Thank you to everyone for
abiding by the article size for
this issue. Unfortunately, inflation
has hit the printing word so we
needed to adjust the article sizes
and also the style of the issue. I
hope everyone will be happy with
this new style.
Hello Senators,
I would like to say a Big Thank
You for all the cards, phone calls,
thoughts and prayers during my
surgery and recovery from back
surgery. It was a huge success
and I am glad to be getting back
to normal life.
Thank you to everyone who
submitted articles for the September
issue. It makes our job easier
when we get them. We learn so
much about the states and regions
by reading your articles. If you
have any Empty Chairs or New
Senators, please remember to send
in pictures so that they can be recognized
properly. The deadline for
the May Issue is March 6 ,2023.
The “Mentors” team worked
really hard on the issue with the
cut in article size. Please thank
Mary and Tanis for all their work on
this issue and all the other issues.
Jackie had another great year with
the Christmas ads, give her a word
of thanks also.
In Kenner, LA we will announce
the articles size as we want to
see how well this issue goes
over with everyone. Reminder
to send all articles, empty chair,
new senators, feature senators and
pictures (names/senate numbers)
to mentors@usjcisenate.org. The
deadline is March 6,
“Here We Are, Once Again;
Stronger Now Than We Have
Ever Been” - Alabama
We have made it thru summer
and fall and are heading into
winter and the Holiday Season.
We grew stronger and Experienced
the Senate thru the summer
by adding members, attending
the Region II/III Social, visiting
other states and regions, having
dinner socials and zoom meetings.
Fall saw Apple Harvest, In-person
meetings, socials, zoom meetings
and Halloween and Thanksgiving
projects with the Jaycees.
With winter coming, we have
Holiday parties in Pennsylvania,
New Jersey and Delaware, dinner
socials, zoom socials and traditional
Holiday projects with the Jaycees.
The winter Board of Directors
meeting in Kenner, Louisiana is
going to be an awesome meeting
and I hope the Region will have
as good a representation as they
usually do.
Our annual Region II meeting,
MAI, which we hold with Region
III, will be held in Timonium,
Maryland March 30 to April 2 nd .
This is where we will recognize
the best of the region and I will
hand over the reigns of Region
II to my successor. Make plans
to attend; it will be a good time.
"HERE WE ARE"
I wish everyone a Happy Holiday
season, but we should look back
on the previous year and reflect
on the people we have met, the
things we did and the places we
visited. The second half of the
year is ahead of us and we have
the chance to make it the best we
possibly can.
Like the song says, “Hand in
Hand, Heart to Heart; Now We’ve
Made it Through the Hardest Part”
and I believe we have. I am proud
to represent our great region and
those who are no longer here.
I have encouraged my states to
participate in the “Wreaths Across
someone you know who provided
Since it is the Christmas season,
it is my hope that everyone
remembers the true meaning of
you to the Colorado JCI Senate
really outdid yourselves with some
awesome hospitality. Thank you
fellow NVP’s for the laughs, the fun,
that you have accomplished in the
to the second half as you continue
to do great things.
What a great year we have experienced
so far. I have had the
and with the Jaycees. It has been
an amazing experience interacting
with the Jaycees, playing “Never
attended meetings, enjoyed hospitality,
attended the Distinguished
Service Awards Banquet in NC and
volunteered at the JCI USA Annual
Meeting and TOYA in Virginia Beach,
VA. I had the opportunity to meet
some amazing young people and
can’t wait to see what great things
they accomplish.
Hello fellow Senators, the first
quarter of the year is now history
and I can chalk up more “Experience
the Senate”. The Fall Board in
Colorado was a fantastic event led by
Ann Engle #71560 and the wonderful
staff of Senators that helped make
it a success. I also had the experience
of joining Region VI led by my
fellow NVP Paul Myers #72173 in
Rochester, Minnesota. The meeting
was coupled with Minnesota celebrating
their 50 th Anniversary where I met
MN President Chad Carlson #76972
who was a first timer at Region VI.
I was proud to meet him and award
him a “Spread the Web Challenge
Coin”. Traveled to Michigan led
by Wendy Taylor #71712, Region
I Fall Frolic in Maine, Colorado to
celebrate their 50 th Anniversary and
out to the great state of Hawaii led
by Yvette Lee #68707.
Traveling to Winter Board in
New Orleans, Indiana/Kentucky
Bourbon Bash, Region VII Pigeon
Forge, Region VI Spring Meeting in
Yankton, SD and my own Region V
Meeting “Spring Fling” in Galena,
Illinois.
On a sad note, my home state of
Illinois has been hit hard this past year
with Senators who now occupy the
US JCI SENATE FOUNDATION
PRESIDENT
WAYNE KIEFER #36498
wayne.kiefer@gmail.com
As we look forward to another
holiday season and our winter board
meeting in New Orleans, let me
update you regarding your foundation
since we last met.
We had a great Fall Board
Meeting in beautiful Colorado,
Golden, Colorado to be more
exact. What a great venue and a
superb job done by the committee.
Besides working well with the
Senate, another great job of cooperation
was given on behalf of
your foundation.
During the weekend, the foundation
put together another quality
silent auction. Special thanks to
Donna Delaney #55560, Marge Miller
Karen MacCannell #49497.
It takes a great group working
together to put together everything
needed to make the program inviting
and interesting to our members and
non-members as they bid on items;
all in the name of scholarships for
our high school graduates taking the
next big step in their lives.
For those present in Colorado, we
announced to again award a total
of 50 scholarships in 2023 and to
increase the academic amount to
$1500 (45). We will keep the vocational
& industrial scholarships at
$1000 (5). Each Fall Board meeting
we will continue to review our financials
and hope we will continue
to give more and larger amounts.
We hope you will continue to
support the foundation and if not
a member, please consider joining.
It only takes $150 to start a membership
and grow from there at your
own pace.
Thank you so much for your
continued belief and support as we
continue assisting education through
scholarships. Please continue to
remain humble and kind.
Great news!! Because of your
continued support in our fundraising
efforts, at the last foundation
meeting in Colorado, the trustees
voted to increase the amount of
the regular scholarships to $1,500.
We will be presenting 45 of these
scholarships in April 2023. The
updated application form is
available on the website(s). The
vocational / industrial scholarships
will remain at $1,000 each.
Five of these scholarships will be
presented again this year.
The deadline for national submission
is postmarked Friday,
February 17, 2023. Please let
me know if you need any assistance
with your program.
Dear Foundation Friends,
Thank you so much for your
donations and purchases at Fall
Boards. We cannot do this or make
the Foundation be successful without
each of you.
Our next meeting will be in
Louisiana! Hopefully some warm
weather for the chilly Northerners.
Again, we would appreciate
any and all donations for our Silent
Auction. If you are not able to attend,
please consider donating through
the website. We also have a way
to set aside money in your Will to
be designated for the Foundation.
What a wonderful lasting legacy in
your name.
As the Foundation board we are
very conscientious about our fund's
and strive to make the best decisions
regarding investments. Our main
purpose to continue the scholarships
is to make them grow and
invest in our future with the best
and brightest students to be found.
In the next weeks and months have
a safe Thanksgiving and remember
all those who help with the Foundation
in your Christmas blessings.
While at the JCI USA National
Convention, I hosted a Senate Table
during the States Party. To enter
a chance to win a bottle of Jack
Daniels, I asked the Jaycees to
provide one piece of advice about
how the Senate can better help the
Jaycees. The number one response
received was “better communication
– just have a conversation with
us, one on one.” This really ties
back to the “Coffee Talk Program”
of just having one or two Senators
meet with one or two Jaycees and
just talk.
If you are interested in attending
the next JCI USA National Convention,
mark your calendars now
to be in Nashville, TN over St.
Your Potential” because I feel the
Jaycees organization provides many
development opportunities that
our members can and should take
advantage, especially from the four
areas of opportunity (individual,
business, community, and international).
We have developed an
exciting, expansive, and aggressive
Plan of Action that is focused on
continuing the positive momentum
of the Jaycees movement, while
continuing to make this the greatest
young persons organization in the
world. Using data, research, and
various analyses, our goals will
allow us to be more external facing,
engage young change makers, and
build partnerships and programs.
Our mission is to provide development
opportunities that empower
young people to create positive
change. I am honored to be able
to help lead this organization in
JCI USA PRESIDENT
MARGO DIRKSON #78760
mdirkson@jciusa.org
WOW! What a journey this year
has been. It seems like yesterday
that it was January and we were all
starting this fantastic experience
together with nervous anticipation.
It has been truly my pleasure
to work with my fellow Senators
and Senate Leadership to make the
most of the year I was honored to
serve as National President of JCI
USA. From the beginning to the
end, I would have not been able to
provide some of the AMAZING
experiences and R.I.S.E. to the
occasion time after time without
the assistance of my senate family.
Starting in December with a one
of a kind SPR in TN at Camp
Discovery, to helping with both
JCI USA national convention, and
much more supporting our individual
chapters/states; Senators have
been there every step of the way.
It has been my pleasure to work
with JCI USA Senate IPP Mike for
the first part of the year and then
finishing my year with a wonderfully
collaborative relationship
with JCI USA Senate President
Susan. I was able to attend my
first national senate event and was
treated as family from that start.
The Senate has supported JCI USA
add over 1,050 members to our
organization, and have actively
helped us extend our Alumni base
to start the process of starting more
chapters in states without an organization
presence. As we continue
to work together to grow both organizations,
we R.I.S.E. to the
best of both as well. I hope that
we can continue to work together
to Recruit. Inspire. Support. And
Empower the members of our
Jaycee Family!!
There are 172 National and 149
we placed 2.4 million wreaths at
3137 locations around the country.
They say that you die twice, once
in the physical and again when
you are forgotten. I pray that when
someone places a wreath at my
father’s grave in Indiana and my
uncles in Ohio, that they thank
them for their service and say their
name. So, they are not forgotten.
Happy Holidays from Region IX.
Holidays are relatively quiet around
here. Oregon had their “Civil War”
meeting to watch Oregon State play
University of Oregon in football. It
was at President John Doty’s house
and everyone had a great time. This
was held on November 27 over
and good Italian food.
We are looking forward to going
to Kenner, Louisiana for the Winter
Board because our birthdays are on
that weekend. The Winter Boards
always fall on our birthdays, so it
is a fun way to celebrate. That’s
probably the next time I see anyone
so have fun in the meantime.
Hawaii maintenance is present
SOCIAL MEDIA
KIM MELACHRINOS #66672
kimjci66672@gmail.com
Why is it so important that we
have a Facebook page for social
media? Facebook is the most
prominent social media platform.
According to a report by Donorbox
from April 2022, Facebook has
over 2.89 billion monthly active
users and increases 10 percent year
after year. 1.84 billion people on
average log onto Facebook daily
and are considered daily active
users and five new profiles are
created every second.
Although other platforms are
expanding in reach and influence
every day, Facebook still reigns
over other social media networks.
So, it makes perfect sense for us
to have a page!
We want to show Senators
enjoying themselves and spending
time together. Everyone loves to
see pictures. Having the Facebook
page is a great opportunity for
everyone to see what our regions
& states are doing.
I would love to see all regions
& states on the page, so please
email me your pictures. Or you
can give me permission to share
from your pages.
Remember, our ONLY official
Facebook page is the one titled US
JCI Senate with President Susan’s
#58143 logo. Don’t forget to LIKE
the page!
As we approach the Holiday
I am thankful for my family
and their continued health. My
wife, Stephanie #72949, keeps
me balanced when I get too high
or too low and is the real reason
behind any of my successes. I am
blessed to have such an extensive
network of friends from my Jaycee
“Experience the Senate”. I will
always consider July 5, 1995 as
HISTORIAN
DAVE DeLANEY #41203
for your reading pleasure are some
tips on having an effective meeting.
Meetings is noticed well in
advance so calendars can be
cleared.
Always distribute items that
must be voted on ahead of the
meeting. (Reports, Minutes, resolutions)
Start Meetings on time and close
the bar with the gavel to order.
All Offices should be prepared
to summarize written reports, not
read them.
Have People lined up in advance
to move action items.
Controversial items should
be vetted by a committee before
brought to the floor.
No one can speak twice on the
same motion before everyone who
wants to have spoken once.
The more controversial an issue,
the more formal the process.
Don’t overuse Parliamentary
Procedure, it will look like you’re
trying to pull a fast one.
Always give Legal Council and
the Parliamentarian enough notice
of agenda so they can properly
advise the chair.
Always end the meeting with
enough time left over for socializing.
It is where the real works
gets done!
Merry Christmas, Happy
Holidays and a Happy 2023!
50th Anniversary pins and the
video done of the displays and
the Past Presidents.
If you, or your State/Region have
items that help tell the history of
our organization, we would like
to include it in the archives. The
reason we had the many items for
display at the Louisville meeting
was because many Senators/States/
Regions as well as Past Historians
saved those materials over the
years. This is how we are able to tell
the story of our
birth, growth
and successes.
Please save
your agendas,
minutes and
newsletters
and anything
else that tells
your story to
keep adding
to our storied
FUTURE DIRECTIONS
DAVID TEACHOUT #68700
dteachout@charter.net
The Future Directions Committee
would like to wish everyone and
their families a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year. We had
been able to submit the condensed
strategic plan to President Susan
Hatcher #58143 in time for it to
be reviewed at the BOD meeting
in Golden, Colorado. It has since
been made into a working document
that we can utilize.
The committee is currently
drilling into a few of the key bullet
points. Our goal is to be able to
implement or move forward on
some of this plan before the end
of the year.
We are currently working on
enhancing communications between
the national, region and state Senate
organizations. We will be looking
at how we can continue to support
and strengthen our relationships
with JCI USA.
If anyone would like to pass
along a suggestion on these topics,
feel free to contact myself or any
other member of this committee. I
hope to see and visit with a lot of
you in the coming months. Be safe.
A TRIBUTE TO OUR DEPARTED MEMBERS
(A Brief History of Our Memorial Service)
Compiled by: Dave Habershaw #17879 and Randy Young #46420 (Past Presidents), Mike Sawyer #36403 and Ray Ainslie #44136 (Past Chaplains)
One by one, in small and large
groups, members of the US JCI
Senate filed into the assembly hall.
Quietly they took seats, more than
250, to begin the annual Memorial
Service. They were there to pay
tribute to those JCI Senators who
had passed away during the previous
year.
In a somber but humble appearance
Senate Chaplain Scott Kingsley
#67932 called the assembly to order.
He then called Wayne Kiefer #36498
forward to present an open eulogy
to our 45 th US JCI Senate President,
Jim Mammon #37122, who had just
recently passed away. Following
Waynes comments, the Chaplain
then called forward, in order, each
of the Region Vice Presidents who
then read off the names of the JCI
Senators from each of their states
who had passed away during the year
while simultaneously, their names
and photos were displayed on the
giant screen video monitor. Each
in turn, the departed Senators were
recognized and their names recorded
for posterity. Finalizing the event
came the recognition of our neighbors
to the north, Canadian JCI Senators
who had departed. All-in-all it was
a memorable and beautiful service.
In retrospect, the JCI Senate
didn’t always have a Memorial
Service for our departed. During
the early years, if a “known senator”
had departed, a moment of silence
was held for him during the BOD
Meeting. However, in 1989, that all
changed thanks to an innovative JCI
Senator, Tom Selmer #14563, who
was the Chaplain under President
Jim Hall #16055.
During the 1988 annual mid-year
meeting in Tulsa that year (actually
Jan 1989), a number of us were seated
in the hospitality room doing our
usual chit-chat. During the conversation,
Tom brought up the idea of
wanting to do something to recognize
the Senators who had passed away
since the last meeting. At that time
there were no official records of the
Senators who passed away and Tom
felt that it would be appropriate to
do so. However, he didn’t feel any
specific religious rite was an appropriate
method. As an avid firefighter
in Indianapolis, he realized the importance
of recognizing the departed.
At that point it was mentioned that
the BPO Elks held a non-denominational
memorial service at each
state’s year-end meeting. Tom asked
this writer if it were possible to get
a copy of the service that the Elks
held. This was done and sent to Tom.
Over the course of the next few
months, Tom used the Elks service
and his knowledge of the firefighter’s
service as a platform to develop
a service for the JCI Senate. While
it is patterned after the Elks service,
is quite different. Upon arrival in
Memphis in June 1989, Tom met
with several of us to go over his
plan. We made a few tweaks but
maintained his original intent. One
of the things Tom had done was to
develop a generic eulogy to honor
all the departed Senators. This was
read at the start of the service and
then each departed member’s name
was read aloud. Simultaneously,
live candles, which had been lit,
were extinguished. In the first few
years there weren’t many departed
senators to recognize (only 10 – 15)
for two reasons: There weren’t that
many who passed away and it was
not easy to get the names from the
states of those who had departed.
This mostly was accomplished via
phone calls and requests published
in the Senate Scene. No email in
those days.
What is interesting is that during
those first years the attendance was a
bit sparse. It was usually held before
the BOD Meeting and started at
7:00 am in order to finish before the
8:00 am start of the BOD Meeting.
Therefore, only about 15-25 brave
souls managed to drag themselves
to the service. Another interesting
tid-bit is that most of the attendees
came in jacket and tie or dresses for
women, as the case may be.
The purpose and meaning of the
service changed significantly in 1994
in Orlando. At the outset of the year,
then Chaplain/Rabbi Mike Sawyer
#36403 made a concerted effort to
improve the presentation. Since
this was pre-internet time, he sent
out snail-mail letters to every state
senate President with a pre-paid return
post card, requesting the names and
numbers of any deceased Senator
from their state. The response was
very rewarding: he received 48 names.
He even received a last-minute call
from Maryland’s President notifying
him of a wheel-bound Senator that
had been murdered during a home
invasion.
All 48 names were printed in a
Memorial Booklet and distributed
during the service. Several notable
facts from that meeting were: Pennsylvania
had the most names (10) and
it included the name of Hal Krekorian
#9695. Thus, Hal became the first
of our Past Presidents to be recognized
at a Memorial Service. It
was a very humbling and moving
service with more than 150 members
and spouses in attendance. They
came, not just to pay tribute to Hal,
a man truly loved and respected by
his peers, but to pay tribute to the
other 48 people on the list.
At the beginning of the service
Amazing Grace was sung by a young
lady from the Orlando area. There
were 49 lit candles on the table in
front, one each for the deceased
member and one extra for any
deceased senator(s) whose name(s)
weren’t submitted in time. Past
President Darryl Watts #9776 was
tasked with reading the names of
each departed Senator, while John
Clarke #1856 (later Chuck Fries
#18344) extinguished a candle.
After all the names were read, the
49th candle was extinguished. This
practice of having one candle for each
deceased member continued into the
late 1990s when it was decided to
revise the practice. It was decided
to change to using one lit candle
for each state that submitted the
names of their deceased Senators
and this was later changed in the
mid 2000’s to using a single candle
for each region.
Over the next decade or so, the
service began to develop traction.
Each Chaplain did his/her best to
provide a strong sense of decorum
during each year’s service. As a
result, more and more Senators and
spouses turned out for this event.
For example, during Randy Young’s
#46420 year as Chaplain, he had a
single individual from each Region
read the names from their Region.
This was later changed to having
the NVPs read the names from their
Region. Concurrently, Daryl and
Chuck continued their service as
ushers. Live music was introduced
whereby Angie Struttmen sang and
was accompanied by Bev Moss on
piano. Randy also implemented a
program to recognize Region and
State Chaplains who had performed
exceptional services. Later Ariel
Jones #65423, as Chaplain, introduced
the use of photos during the
slide presentation. However, it was
during the 2013 Annual Service that
then Chaplain Ray Ainslie #44136
provided a significant improvement
for the service.
As mentioned previously, obtaining
names of departed senators depended
on receiving the information from
the state Presidents or chaplains.
While this was effective, it wasn’t
very thorough. During Ray’s year a
policy was implemented to compile
a list throughout the year of the
departed Senators. By promoting
the process through the NVP’s, a
very composite list from each state
was obtained. It also was capable of
obtaining a list of previously departed
Senators who had been missed in
the previous years. Most of this
new effort came about via a newly
developed position of Membership
Services Director chaired by Larry
Ferguson #45060. Also, beginning
that year, the video presentation
program was introduced which has
been used since. In addition to the
video program, which eventually
included pictures of the departed,
hand programs were passed out
listing the departed by Region/State
of the deceased Senators. Also recognized
that year were the Senate
families that had children in the
active military. With the calling
of each name a gong was struck
using a suspended copper pipe and
hammer. Canadian Senators, as well
as ASAC and ASE Senators were
also recognized.
The idea of the sounding of a tone
after the names read lead to a new
development. The following year a
bell was specially cast in Sandusky,
Ohio, sponsored by Ray, for the US
JCI Senate. It took three castings
before the bell was correct. It was
then presented to the organization as
a gift from Ray #44136 and Melodie
#69200 Ainslie. A hand carrying
case made of Illinois Cherry accompanied
the bell.
The list of departed Senators has
continued to grow each year; unfortunately.
Thus, additional changes
were needed to control matters. As
a result, it was decided that any
Senator to be recognized needed
to be a due’s paid member of the
states and national organization. This
helped to streamline the logistics
of the service. Also, coordination
with the regions and states increased
which meant compiling the annual
list was much easier
As we enter our second half
century for the US JCI Senate, a
very important and humbling activity
has become an integral part of our
annual gathering: THE MEMORIAL
SERVICE. What started as a simple
idea by Chaplain Tom Selmer #14563
in 1988-1989, has become a significant
part of our heritage - paying
tribute to our departed members.
NOTE: There are no factual
records in the US JCI Senate Archives
that exist that mention the events
described above. However, the 4
compiling individuals each did, at
different times, participate in the
events as written; thus, these events
are as factual as can be expected.
