Dear Friends of
Spiegelburg International
Jules Verne was a French novelist. He lived from 1828 to 1905 and was best known for his novels Journey
to the Centre of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869/70) and Around the World in Eighty Days
(1873).
Today he is considered to be the founder of science fiction literature, but would you have attributed the
following quote to him? A quote that nowadays is associated with the concept of sustainability! In his
novel The Mysterious Island, published in 1874, he poses the question of how humankind should cope when
the coal runs out. Water is the coal of the future, was the answer.
"I believe that water will one day be employed as fuel, that hydrogen and oxygen which
constitute it, used singly or together, will furnish an inexhaustible source of heat and light,
of an intensity of which coal is not capable.” The Mysterious Island.
Jules Verne was a very inspirational person who wrote his novels with vision and knowledge of
contemporary science. He was in contact with natural scientists and inventors who advised him and thus
helped him to come up with ideas. Our new Jules Verne collection takes you into a world of science and
imagination, a world of explorers and adventurers!
In addition to Jules Verne, you will also encounter Johannes le Francq van Berkhey from the Netherlands
in our program. His wonderful drawings from the 18th and 19th centuries take you into the fascinating
world of botany and zoology.
"Look with all your eyes, look!" Jules Verne used to say. We hope you enjoy looking and browsing
our new catalogue. Discover our worlds, which are influenced by travel and nature and which we
want to make increasingly sustainable.
