INVEST
HEAVILY
INTO US
MARKET
Key global players, Beretta and
Fiocchi, have both invested into
the United States with multimillion-dollar
ammunition
facilities.
Beretta are investing $60 million in
a state-of-the art manufacturing and
distribution facility for ammunition to
be located in Savannah, Georgia. Fiocchi
has selected a 281-acre site in the Port
of Little Rock, Arkansas, US for a new
ammunition primer manufacturing facility,
representing a $41.5 million investment
and a 120-person workforce expansion.
The new Fiocchi production operation
will pave the way for future growth in
Arkansas and provide much-needed
primer supply relief for the broader
ammunition manufacturing segment.
The new facility will be one of only
six primer manufacturing operations in
the U.S. and the only dedicated leadfree
primer plant in the world. Fiocchi
evaluated five locations across three states
for the expansion. Little Rock was selected
as the preferred location after a thorough
site selection search that evaluated
real estate compatibility, logistical
infrastructure, workforce capability, and
support from state and local leadership.
This new initiative follows three major
acquisitions by Fiocchi over the last
two years, including premium shotshell
manufacturers Baschieri & Pellagri
and Lyalvale Express, plus a division
of Grandeur Fasteners of Little Rock,
AR. The latter provided Fiocchi the
opportunity to stand up the expansive
Little Rock Operations and to pave the
way for the new primer manufacturing
facility.
“This groundbreaking represents
another significant milestone in Fiocchi’s
long-term plan to strengthen and expand
our manufacturing capabilities,” said
Maurizio Negro, Fiocchi Group CEO,
“and to bolster primer supplies not only
for Fiocchi products but also to increase
supplies for the ammunition
manufacturing industry at
large. We sincerely appreciate
the support of Governor
Hutchinson, Secretary of
Commerce Mike Preston,
Jack Thomas of the Little
Rock Chamber of Commerce,
Bryan Day of the Port of
Little Rock, and all partners
involved who helped make
this possible.”
Part of Fiocchi’s ongoing
vertical integration strategy,
the new primer facility
will allow the company
to meet internal primer
supply needs, focus on
its low environmental
impact initiatives, and
present second-sourcing
opportunities for industry
contracts.
Fiocchi is the technology
leader in lead- and heavymetal-free
primers and is
the only manufacturer of
lead-free primers to receive
NATO qualification. This
new initiative compliments
Fiocchi’s major commitments
to the sustainable technology
segment, which includes
lead-free projectiles, nontoxic
shot, and biodegradable
components under the
company’s EnviroShield
initiative.
“Our focus on Little
Rock for this major
expansion comes from an
ideal alignment of several
considerations,” said Fiocchi
of America President and
CEO Anthony Acitelli.
“Aside from our strong ties
with the state and local
governments, Arkansas
has a highly experienced
and energetic labor force
to call upon. Furthermore,
streamlined logistics with
other plant operations
combined with management
and supply chain efficiencies
make Little Rock a logical
choice. We will also benefit
from logistical synergies with
our ammo manufacturing
industry partners.”
“Today I am pleased to
celebrate Fiocchi’s growth,
which is also a demonstration
of the continued expansion of
the firearms and ammunition
industry in our state,”
Governor Asa Hutchinson
said. “Over the past several
years, my team and I have
had opportunity to build a
relationship with Fiocchi
– meeting with Fiocchi
leadership during our visits
to the SHOT Show, which is
the industry’s leading trade
show, and even during my
most recent trade mission to
Europe. Fiocchi’s decision
to grow in Arkansas speaks
to the significance of
maintaining the businessfriendly
climate that Arkansas
is becoming so well known
for.”
“Fiocchi is another
wonderful example of direct
investment in Little Rock
and the 120 jobs created
will have a lasting impact in
our community,” said Little
Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr.
“Fiocchi had multiple options
for this expansion, and we are
thankful for their investment
in Little Rock.”
“For the past eight years,
Governor Hutchinson
has made firearms and
ammunition a priority
industry to grow and diversify
our state’s economy,” said
Secretary of Commerce
Mike Preston. “Governor
Hutchinson was the first
Arkansas governor to attend
the SHOT Show, and he has
led an Arkansas delegation
to the show every year since
then in an effort to actively
pursue and welcome premier
companies like Fiocchi to
Arkansas. For more than a
century, Fiocchi has been a
leader in its industry, and we
have witnessed firsthand their
commitment and excellence
in business. This expansion
will help Fiocchi reach more
customers as they continue
to strengthen their brand
throughout the region, and
we are excited to celebrate
alongside them today.”
“Fiocchi joins a growing list
of world-class international
businesses choosing to
locate at the Port of Little
Rock,” said Pulaski County
Judge Barry Hyde. “Fiocchi
is a leader in sustainable
technology, and we are proud
to welcome their investment
in Pulaski County.”
“The best compliment a
community can receive is
when a company invests, then
turns around two years later
and doubles down on their
investment,” said Jim Cargill,
2022 Chairman of the Little
Rock Regional Chamber.
“This significant investment
signals that Fiocchi is pleased
with our regional workforce
and business climate in
Central Arkansas.”
“We are proud to welcome
Fiocchi to the Port of Little
Rock, said Bobby Brown,
Chair of the Little Rock
Port Authority Board of
Directors. “Fiocchi’s advanced
manufacturing facility will
be a great addition to our
growing industrial park, and
we look forward to their
success.”
Fiocchi will begin
construction in 2023 and
anticipates its first stage
of operational capacity
of its Little Rock primer
manufacturing facility in early
2025.
BASC responds to lead ammo ban proposals
A report circulated on 6 May this year by
the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) –
under UK REACH – proposed a complete
ban on outdoor recreational uses of all forms
of lead ammunition in England, Scotland
and Wales, with limited derogations. The
consultation on the proposals recently
closed.
BASC, The British Association for
Shooting and Conservation, prepared
a all-inclusive reaction, which we have
summarised below:
BASC’s response
- Online submission to the UK REACH
consultation
- BASC review of the UK REACH Annex
XV restriction dossier on lead ammunition,
supported by:
• BASC technical report: Accuracy and
penetration testing of lead-free
ammunition in .243 calibre
• BASC technical report:
Accuracy and penetration testing
of lead-free ammunition in .22lr -
rimfire calibre
• BASC technical report: Accuracy
and muzzle energy testing of leadfree
airgun ammunition in .177
and .22
• BASC technical report: Weight
retention of lead airgun pellets.
Live quarry shooting
There is clear evidence of risk of
primary poisoning of birds from
lead shot and of the human health
risk from exposure to lead in game meat.
Having assessed the evidence, BASC
concluded that restrictions on the sale and
use of both lead shot and expanding lead
rifle ammunition for live quarry shooting
would be effective at eliminating those
proven risks.
The transition periods for regulation of
lead shot and expanding rifle ammunition
must be agreed in close consultation with
the shooting sector and take account of
technical and global supply chain issues.
To support BASC’s position, it has
submitted a series of technical reports.
These demonstrate the need for raising
the threshold of ‘small calibres’ within the
UK REACH dossier to include any calibre
below 6.5mm. This would provide a longer
transition period for calibres such as .243.
For rimfire ammunition, BASC is asking
that restrictions are not implemented
until suitable lead-free alternatives can be
guaranteed at scale.
ASC maintains its view that airgun
ammunition should not be restricted as
the risk to human health can be managed
through existing sector guidance on game
meat handling. BASC has also prepared a
technical report demonstrating the inherent
unsuitability of existing lead-free airgun
ammunition for live quarry shooting.
BASC remains committed to the
voluntary transition away from lead shot
and single use plastics for shotguns used
in live quarry shooting. As such, it believes
that further regulation is not required in this
area.
Clay pigeon and target shooting
BASC says that the evidence presented by
the HSE on secondary exposure to birds,
plus lead exposure pathways to livestock and
other animals, soil, soil organisms, plants,
and surface waters, is not conclusive.
The association believes that the HSE has
failed to address uncertainty in the evidence
as is required by regulatory guidance. As a
result, restrictions based on these risks are
unnecessary and disproportionate.
BASC deems that lead shot could
continue to be used for clay pigeon /
target shooting at venues where risks of
primary exposure to birds is managed. It
also advocates that lead rifle ammunition
(non-expanding) can continue to be used
on ranges. BASC believes that current legal
and regulatory frameworks are effective and
further regulation risks the unnecessary
‘gold plating’ of environmental directives.
BASCs requests
BASC is also making the following requests
of the HSE:
1. Re-assess the use and risk of lead
ammunition in the UK context.
2. Uphold the transparency requirements
of the European Chemicals Agency
(ECHA) for Annex XV restriction dossier
preparation.
3. Reassess their estimate of lead shotgun
ammunition use.
4. Reassess their estimate of rifle
ammunition use.
5. Review their assessment of environmental
and human health impacts and benefits of
restrictions.
6. Ensure accurate costs are applied during
the forthcoming socio-economic impact
assessment.
7. Thoroughly explore the uncertainty in the
evidence in relation to secondary poisoning
of birds from lead ammunition.
8. Thoroughly explore the uncertainty in the
evidence in relation to impacts on ‘other’
animals from lead ammunition.
9. Thoroughly explore the uncertainty in
the evidence in relation to impacts on soil,
soil organisms and vegetation from lead
ammunition.
10. Exclude surface and ground waters from
its proposals.
11. Move the boundary for defining ‘large
calibre’ centrefire ammunition to
≥6.5mm.
12. Ensure that any restriction
and transition period for rimfire
ammunition is reviewed before
implementation.
13. Drop proposals for restricting
the use of lead airgun ammunition.
14. Consider providing extended
transition periods for small gauge
shotgun calibres of 28 bore and
smaller.
15. Revise restriction proposals,
ensuring that they are
proportionate to the evidenced
risk, make best use of existing legal
and regulatory frameworks and
avoid ‘gold plating’ existing environmental
directives.
16. Implement a buy-back scheme to: a.
Fairly compensate material loss resulting
from restrictions; b. Incentivise the
transition to lead free alternatives; c. Ensure
that the restrictions do not create a ‘false’ or
‘early’ cliff- edge for sales of lead products
that undermines manufacturers’ ability to
invest in development and production of
lead-free alternatives.
Next steps
The HSE and Environment Agency (EA)
will review the consultation responses
prior to preparing a final restriction report.
This report, expected to be published
in early summer 2023, will be a set of
recommendations to Defra. This will provide
the basis for legislation.
It is likely that a 60-day consultation
will launch in February 2023 as part of the
HSE’s Socio-Economic Impact Assessment
of proposals.
SKYFIRE CONSULTING TEAMS
UP WITH DRONESENSE
Skyfire Consulting has announced it has
officially partnered with DroneSense
– makers of a drone management and
collaboration platform. This strategic
partnership will allow both Skyfire and
DroneSense to provide public safety
agencies a complete Drone as First
Responder (DFR) package and help
them smoothly navigate through the
phases of starting a program.
Building on its existing relationship
with DroneSense, Skyfire will work
with agencies and the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) to get faster
regulatory approvals – including beyond
visual line of sight (BVLOS) operation
– appropriate training for both DFR
and tactical UAS response, program site
selection and more.
“We are thrilled to build upon the
already strong relationship with our
partners at DroneSense to help pave
the way for more DFR programs across
the country,” said Matt Sloane, Skyfire
founder and CEO. “DFR programs
are already proving to be much more
efficient for public safety UAS response
than traditional programs, and this is
just one more step towards faster and
easier integration.”
“This partnership with Skyfire was
formed from trust, dependability, and
experience – all things public safety
agencies are looking for,” said Mike
Mocerino, DroneSense Director of
Sales. “Leveraging their incredible
team to help navigate FAA regulations,
onboarding and program specific
training, on any drone platform,
will allow departments and agencies
the peace of mind to focus on the
communities they serve.”
Skyfire’s DFR integration services
will be available as an add-on to existing
DroneSense contracts or as a separate
service directly purchased from Skyfire.
Oregon-based sheriffs
refuse to enforce
magazine capacity law
A number of Oregon sheriff ’s departments
have revealed that they will not enforce recently
passed Ballot Measure 114, which bans the sale
of magazines holding more than 10 rounds of
ammunition.
Recently, Linn County Sheriff Michelle
Duncan declared that she would not implement
the law in her jurisdiction. Some news outlets
in the area have reported that at least two other
departments will be following suit.
“I agree 100 per cent with Sheriff Duncan,”
wrote Union County Sheriff Cody Bowen
on Facebook. “This is an infringement on our
constitutional rights and will not be enforced by
my office!”
The Sherman County Sheriff ’s Office took a
similar stance: “Per [Sherman County Sheriff
Brad Lohrey’s] direction, our office would not
enforce Measure 114,” Undersheriff James
Burgett confirmed to Willamette Week.
The measure faced opposition from the
Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association before
voters made their choice on the matter, arguing
in a statement published in the state Voters’
Pamphlet that the measure “violates current
federal case law and the U.S. Constitution.”
The new law bans the sale of gun magazines
holding more than 10 rounds and will require
gun buyers to obtain safety training and a
permit. It is
expected to go into
effect 30 days after
the vote is certified,
however “The
Oregonian” recently
reported that several
gun rights groups
are preparing legal
challenges.
Sheriff plans
mass drone
response
In a recent speech at The
Orleans, Clark County Sheriffelect
Kevin McMahill, who as
sheriff will command the Las
Vegas Metropolitan Police, told
a crowd of around 200 that
the police department plans to
deploy hundreds of drones to
shootings, but he did not provide
a date for the program to begin.
“For the first time in our
agency history, we’re going to be
able to keep more officers safe,
reduce officer-involved shootings
and find more suspects than
we ever have, quite frankly,” he
said at a breakfast hosted by
the Commercial Real Estate
Development Association,
also known as the National
Association for Industrial and
Office Parks of Southern Nevada.
McMahill said the department
has identified 11 “chronic
hotspots” that account for about
three-fourths of the crimes
reported in the Las Vegas valley,
the Las Vegas Review-Journal
reports.
“We’re taking 400 drones
that are pre-positioned out in
these neighbourhoods, on top
of businesses,” McMahill said.
“When the gunshot detection
technology goes off, it’ll
triangulate, it’ll give the GPS
coordinates to the local drone.
The drone will be overhead
within 30 seconds.”
A shot of passion
Change of management at H&N Sport
At the turn of 2023, a new chapter will begin at
the German airgun pellet and bullet manufacturer
Haendler & Natermann Sport GmbH.
Christian Hirschel takes over the management
of the company, which was founded in 1825, from
Florian Schwartz. In order to make the transition
as smooth as possible, Mr. Schwartz will continue
to be available as an advisor. He managed H&N
Sport for 13 years and is pleased to have found an
internal successor in Mr. Hirschel who knows the
company from A-Z. Mr. Hirschel was production
manager at H&N for many years and has even
done his training as an industrial mechanic in the
company many years ago. He will continue to lead
the internationally successful company in the tried
and tested way and expand it at the premises in
Hann Münden, thus also securing around 65 jobs
in the long term.
www.hn-sport.de
About
Carl Georg August Natermann, the “father” of H&N Sport, had a major goal: to
manufacture products with outstanding quality. The company continues his legacy
in controlling every step of manufacturing its products – from toolmaking to wire
production to surface finishing – at its factory in Hann. Münden.
Everything H&N makes is subjected to a rigorous quality assurance system. Your
customers can be certain that what they buy is the best it can be – approved by August
Natermann.
In collaboration with its suppliers, H&N constantly optimises the properties of the raw
materials it uses. For example, the company has developed special alloys and lubricants
for air gun pellets that reduce lead-fouling and produce more consistent shot spreads.
You can rely on quality and accuracy from every H&N product.
FEDERAL COURT GRANTS TRO IN
NEW YORK GUN LAW CHALLENGE
A federal court judge in
Buffalo, N.Y. has granted a
temporary restraining order
in a case filed by the Second
Amendment Foundation that
challenges New York State’s
new concealed carry law,
declaring the state’s “place
of worship” restriction is
unconstitutional.
“Ample Supreme Court
precedent addressing the
individual’s right to keep and
bear arms – from Heller and
McDonald to its June 22
decision in Bruen – dictates
that New York’s place of
worship restriction is equally
unconstitutional,” wrote
District Judge John L. Sinatra,
Jr.
The order is effective
immediately and prohibits
enforcement of this provision.
“We’re delighted with
the quick action by Judge
Sinatra,” said SAF founder and
Executive Vice President Alan
M. Gottlieb. “We believe this
law to be wholly in violation
of not only the letter but the
spirit of the Supreme Court’s
decision in New York State
Rifle & Pistol Association v.
Bruen.”
Joining SAF in the case,
which is known as Hardaway
v. Bruen, is the Firearms Policy
Coalition, Inc., on behalf
of Bishop Larry A. Boyd of
Buffalo and Rev. Dr. Jimmie
Hardaway, Jr., of Niagara Falls.
“As we noted in our petition
for the TRO,” Gottlieb
observed, “Reverend Hardaway
has almost always carried a
firearm for self-defense on
Sundays and at services on the
premises of the churches he has
pastored. New York has now
Travel
Las Vegas continues to be
one of the fastest-growing
American markets for direct
international flights. No
airport in the United States
has returned to capacity faster
than Las Vegas. In fact, more
flights are being added than
any other airport every month
and passenger counts are
setting all-time records. Nonstop
international service
from Korea recently returned,
and British Airways will soon
begin regular service from
Gatwick as well as Heathrow.
With the addition of
McCarran Airport’s new
terminal, T-3, Las Vegas has
added more international
gate capacity, a considerably
larger Federal Inspection
Services facility capable of
accommodating as many
as 2,200 passengers per
hour, and increased baggage
handling capabilities.
McCarran was also one of the
first airports in the United
States to install Automated
Passport Control kiosks
or APCs allowing visitors
arriving from approved
countries a more streamlined
arrival process.
All of the above, coupled
with the close proximity of
the airport to the worldfamous
Las Vegas Strip and
the Venetian Expo, makes
traveling in and out of Las
Vegas from international
cities easier than ever.
Law enforcement and
armed forces
The SHOT Show is a
critical forum to share
agency successes, discuss
timely topics and identify
solutions that increase the
safety of both officers and
the public.
Looking for equipment
modifications that can
increase mobility and
capability for your team? The
SHOT Show is where you
can meet face to face with
manufacturers, learn more
about the law enforcement
specialized equipment they
produce, or discuss product
modifications that you and
your officers need. There will
be more than 2,000 exhibits
for the law enforcement
community. Nearly onethird
of the SHOT Show’s
exhibit halls are dedicated
to protection equipment and
tactical accessories needed
by law enforcement, SWAT
teams, private security and
the armed forces.
handgun laser sights
EYES ON
TARGET
Next to iron sights and red dots, lasers form a very interesting sighting alternative for
handguns. At night, in dark circumstances or in situations where you simply can’t get
your eyes lined up behind your regular sights, laser sights shine.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
A laser sight is an electronic device that
is attached or integral to a firearm - in
this case a handgun – to aid with target
acquisition. Unlike your typical iron
sights or optical sight, where you must
line up your eyes with the sight to aim
at the target, laser sights project a beam
onto the target, providing the user with
a visual reference point on your target.
When looking at what a laser actually is,
the word ‘laser’ is an acronym for ‘Light
Amplification by Stimulated Emission of
Radiation’.
The first laser was built in 1960, so the
concept isn’t that new. A laser differs from
other sources of light in that it emits light
which is coherent. This coherence allows
a laser to be focused to a tight spot and
stay narrow over great distances. Lasers
are used for a wide variety of applications,
from cutting and welding materials to
surgery, bar code scanning… Yet also
military, law enforcement, self-defence and
hunting applications to measure distances
- with laser range finders - and as a
weapon sighting system. Although lasers
in the visible part of the electromagnetic
spectrum are most commonly used, in a
red as well as in a green colour scheme,
the military also uses lasers at wavelengths
that are invisible for the unaided human
eye. These lasers will only be visible when
using a night vision device such as goggles.
DIFFERENT TYPES
Laser sights are available in several
different types. The most common
types we see today, but most are divided
into two styles. First, we have framemounted
lasers. These will either attach
to a picatinny style rail in front of the
trigger guard or to the trigger guard of
a handgun itself when an accessory rail
is lacking. On most full-sized handguns,
these laser sights are integrated into a
flashlight offering you both a powerful
light beam as well as laser aiming
capabilities. Some frame-mounted
systems even feature a built-in camera
and microphone to record your practice
drills, but also your actions when the
going gets tough. Others will have
an infrared illuminator to be used in
combination with night vision devices.
Most will feature ambidextrous push
buttons to turn on/off your laser sight,
flashlight… intuitively and with ease
using your index finger. Next to framemounted
lasers we have grip-based laser
great gear
handgun laser sights
sights. These laser grips are not just a
novelty containing a laser, but can be very
comfortable, well-made grips. What’s
interesting about these is that the laser
activates as you grip the weapon, thanks
to a pressure pad, making it impossible to
fail to activate the laser. Flat batteries fit
in the new grip panels, and a miniature
laser sight unit is moulded into the upper
surface of one of the grip plates. With
most laser-sight-grip designs, the two
grip panels are connected by a pressure
pad that crosses the leading surface of
the handgun grip. When the user grips
the firearm normally and applies a
moderate amount of pressure, the laser
sight activates for as long as pressure is
applied. These grips are made for nearly
any weapon you can easily change grips
on, including revolvers, and there even are
laser grips for most popular pistol series
that do not feature interchangeable grips.
These laser grips slip over the existing
grip frame and position a pressureactivation
switch on the back of the grip
strap.
USING LASER SIGHTS
Where a laser sight shines is in lowlight
conditions. Whether red or green,
a laser sight is virtually impossible to
miss in low-light and dark conditions.
Drastically improving your sighting in
these less-than-ideal conditions is what
these compact and easy to use sights are
all about. Laser sights can also be used
when shooting at non-traditional angles,
at these angles, you cannot align your
handgun for whatever reason to use iron
sights. At these extreme angles, a laser
sight can also be used in place of iron
sights. That said, don’t think laser sights
are your all-round aiming device. In bright
daylight conditions you might even be
slower with a laser sight because you’ll
be too focussed on finding the dot on
target whereas open sights or a dot sight
would be much quicker on the mark. So,
see these laser sights as complimenting
your toolbox, and practising with them
as such, rather than fully relying on them
and forgetting about your other sighting
systems all together.
Dedicated training
with a laser sight
is of course the
most important
factor in using a
laser, or really any
firearm. Train to
use the laser sight
in combination
with regular iron
sights. Low light
training is a major
consideration for
using these sights
and should be
carried out regularly.
Also, it’s vital to
remember a laser
sight needs to be
zeroed in, as any
optical weapon
device.
PROS AND CONS
When considering either a framemounted
or a grip laser sight, consider
the following pros and cons. With a
frame-mounted sight, you will need a new
holster as your old one won’t go together
with the added rail-mounted sight. Here
grip laser sights have the advantage as
they don’t require you to purchase a new
holster. On the other hand, should you
wish to add a flashlight next to a laser
sight to upgrade your handgun set up,
frame-mounted laser sights come very
often equipped with a flashlight. Grip
laser sights simply don’t have room to
add an equally powerful flashlight in/on
the handgun grip so here frame-mounted
laser sights have the advantage. Grip
laser sights meanwhile don’t require the
push of a button to activate, as they are
activated by means of a pressure pad in
the grip.
THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT
Laser sights for handguns have come a
long way since featuring in many 80’s
Hollywood movies such as for example
The Terminator. Whether for personal
or professional applications, these sights
offer an extremely useful addition to
your handgun setup, especially for low
light conditions. What’s more, thanks to
the versatility of types and designs, laser
sights are available for almost any kind
of handgun. For the trade, where allowed
by law, these sights will offer a worthy
addition to your product portfolio. GTW
HAndGunS
We take a look at the fast-paced handgun
market to find out the latest trends to help you
with your decision-making process.
Handguns have been
the subject of more
attempted legislation
than perhaps any
other sector of the
shooting world.
Who should own them, how should
they be used, where and when can
they be carried… these are all topics
discussed at length by those in power
in many nations. Few segments of the
firearms trade stir up more debate and
controversy than handguns. In some
parts of the world they are seen as a
fundamental part of gun ownership.
In others, they are banned completely.
Although handguns provoke discussion
about ownership and use in various parts
of the world, they play an all-important
role in our industry.
DISCIPLINES
The disciplines in which handguns are
used cover everything from hunting to
ISSF and IPSC competition, cowboy
action to self-defence and the training
that goes with each, and many, many
more. Without even mentioning
professional applications in military,
law enforcement and security. There is
a vast array of handgun types, including
semi-automatic pistols, revolvers, and
single-shot guns, with cartridges ranging
from .17 HMR right up to .500 S&W
and everything in between, not even
mentioning handguns chambered for
rifle cartridges. With so much on offer,
from shooting styles to cartridges and
gun types, it is no wonder handguns
are such a popular sector in the market,
with some incredibly well-known names
manufacturing. CZ, Smith & Wesson,
Glock, Beretta, Sig Sauer, Walther, Ruger,
Springfield, Chiappa, Taurus, Heckler &
Koch, and Arex are all key names in the
handgun realm.
ACTION TYPES
The variety of handgun types and models
out there is mind-blowing. The available
action types alone are impressive to say
the least.
Less seen are single shot and bolt
action handguns, these mostly serve as
hunting handguns, but they do have their
merits such as the capability of shooting
rifle cartridges in a handgun, delivering
more velocity and flatter trajectories
thanks to their longer barrels as well as
inherent pinpoint accuracy.
than single shot and bolt-action handguns
are revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.
As the name indicates, a revolver is
based on an action featuring a revolving
cylinder with several chambers to contain
individual cartridges. There are two types
of revolver actions, single and double
action. With single action revolvers, the
shooter must cock the hammer manually
before every single shot. With double
action revolvers, pulling the trigger both
cocks the hammer and fires the gun. This
makes the trigger pull of double action
revolvers longer and heavier than that
of single action revolvers. Double action
revolvers with an exposed hammer can
still be manually cocked before each shot
though, offering the shooter the same
light, short trigger pull of single action
only revolvers.
spotlight
Whereas revolvers were the mainstay
of the handgun world for over a century,
the semi-automatic pistol has really
taken over the market big time in the
last three to four decades. These semiautomatics,
also known as autoloaders,
don’t feature a cylinder like revolvers do
but use a stacked magazine. Their action
automatically loads the next cartridge in
the chamber after every shot because of
the slide moving backwards and forwards
with every subsequent shot. Likewise,
the hammer is cocked automatically with
every shot. Generally, there are three
types of autoloading actions – singleaction,
double-action and striker-fired.
With a single-action semi-automatic, you
must manually cock the hammer before
firing the first round. With double-action
pistols, the shooter does not have to cock
the hammer manually before taking the
first shot but instead only pull the trigger.
The third type consists of striker-fired
autoloading pistols. These are a variation
on the double-action-only concept but
do not have an exposed hammer. Instead,
each trigger pull compresses and releases a
spring featuring a striker firing pin.
BEST-SELLING CARTRIDGES
Literally dwarfing other handgun
cartridges year after year when it comes to
sales, the classic 9x19 Luger or Parabellum
keeps reigning supreme with no less than
48 percent of sales. Other recognisable
cartridges such as the .357 Magnum, .38
Special, .40 Smith & Wesson are selling in
acceptable numbers but get nowhere near
the level of 9mm Para sales. Indirectly this
points out how popular semi-automatic
pistols are compared to the traditional
revolver. The humble .22 long rifle has
always been, and still very much is, an
economical choice, making it ideal for
everything from backyard fun to target
practice and precision target shooting, as
well for small game hunting. The numbers
clearly show this little rimfire calibre
has its undisputed place in the market,
accounting for 16 percent of handgun
sales.
SELF-DEFENCE SALES OP THE UP
It is interesting to see the retailers in
our survey indicating how the market
for handguns has evolved during the last
twelve months. According to nearly one
third of these retailers,
their handgun sales
were up in the last year
compared to the previous
period with an equal
share of retailers stating
sales stabilized.
In terms of handgun
types sold, 23 per cent
of the retailers in our
survey sold competition
shooting models while
another 24 per cent is
made up of handguns for
target shooting. With a
combined market share
of 47 per cent for both categories, there
is an unmistakable appetite for target and
competition handguns. There is another
category that took first place in our
bestseller list though. With a market share
of 42 per cent, handguns for self-defence
experienced a noticeable leap forward
in sales with the retailers in our survey.
Hunting accounts for a smaller, yet steady
market share of about 11 per cent.
WOMEN AND MIDDLE-AGED
BUYERS
For several years, ladies continue to be the
fastest-growing demographic of new gun
owners. This year’s survey shows this trend
is not exactly coming to a halt, on the
contrary. No less than 20 percent of the
retailers in our survey claim the number of
women buying handguns is growing. Still
40 per cent of respondents claimed the
market for lady shots was down, leaving
an equal 40 per cent of the market stating
that sales to women were about the same
as the previous year. Getting ladies into
the sport not only adds diversification to
your footfall – and profit sources – but
can also encourage the rest of the family,
especially youngsters, to take an interest
into the sport as well.
Handguns generally attract younger
punters, with sales to the age group 26 to
40 accounting for over one third, 40 per
cent, of sales. The share of buyers aged 41
to 55 is the clear majority in this year’s
survey with a clean 60 per cent market
share. Buyers aged over 55 traditionally
account for a smaller share of the market,
taking about 20 per cent this year.
GREAT BUSINESS
Outside of some severely restricted
countries, handguns provide an important
business opportunity for the trade. Most
dealers seem to hold a good selection of
makes, models and types, with some also
specializing in a particular sector. Where
you are located and the opportunities
nearby (clubs, ranges or hunting areas)
will naturally influence those choices.
Reloading ammunition is also popular and
can prove to be a worthwhile addition to
your portfolio, offering potential add-on
sales. Most retailers seem to hold a good
selection of makes, models and types,
with some also focusing on a particular
sector. Where you are located and the
opportunities you have nearby (shooting
clubs, ranges or hunting areas) will
naturally influence those choices. All in all,
the number of people worldwide who own
handguns appears to keep growing steadily
but surely, making this a key sector not to
be ignored. GTW
what the trade can get excited about
through 2023.
40 www.guntradeworld.com
Leapers has outfitted shooters for
more than 30 years. Most, if not
all, have come across Leapers’
well-established brands online,
at a gun show, and or at the
local gun shop down the street. Leapers’
mission is to promote a quality lifestyle
through innovative and solution-oriented
hunting and shooting sports optics and
accessories with complete concept-todelivery
services to customers all over
the world. Innovation, quality, value, and
service are central to every one of their
brands.
Streamlined structure
Leapers is excited to announce the launch
of two unique brands of optics in 2023,
Integrix and Accushot Pro. Two additions
to reach new and continued customers
alike with a streamlined tier structure
and greater access to products that fit
each and everyone’s lifestyle, shooting
discipline, and level of experience.
Concurrently, at SHOT Show 2023,
Leapers is also introducing its first
billet AR upper and lower receivers,
manufactured at its manufacturing centre
in Livonia, MI.
“In 2023 there is a lot to look forward
to, Leapers welcomes and appreciates
new and continued support from shooters
everywhere,” says company founder,
David Ding.
The Integrix Difference
Integrix, Leapers’ new premier optics
starts with the end user. Intensive market
research and numerous discussions
with users from different areas – sports
shooters from different disciplines,
hunters from different nations, and
users in the police and military – make
it possible to recognise the constantly
changing and growing requirements for
optics. To hit the target with pinpoint
accuracy over long distances, optics with
maximum resolution, the highest light
transmission, and extreme repeatability
are required.
Top Level Manufacturing
Within Leapers’ UTG PRO Livonia,
Michigan manufacturing facility is a
machine shop floor lined up with worldclass
CNC, injection-molding, robotic
automation, and in-house Cerakote. The
capable manufacturing facility produces
Leapers’ USA-made line of handguards,
stocks, buffer tubes, scope rings,
magazines, and now AR billet receivers.
Releasing first is a standard lower
receiver, available as a set with their
upper or standalone. This lower provides
the same standard battery of arms and
parts commonality as one would expect
from a forged receiver but implements
features that shooters of all skill levels
and disciplines will appreciate. A true
ambidextrous lower will also be available
shortly after and both lowers share the
same overall design elements and shooter
driven ergonomics.
Ever lose a spring, detent, or two?
Avoid the pain and frustration from
dents, scratches, and the loss of detents
and springs. UTG PRO lower receivers
feature a captured buffer detent and
rear takedown pin housing. Threaded
steel pins replace the typical use of roll
pins throughout the upper and lowers,
easing installation for first time and even
well-versed builders. Common parts
compatibility was a key must-have and
the ability to easily source parts from all
over adds to how simple it is to get up
and running with a UTG Pro receiver.
Outside of the originally designed
parts for the true ambidextrous lower,
the majority of standard drop-in and
aftermarket handguards, LPKs, BCGs,
and FCGs are compatible.
Ergonomic considerations go hand in
hand with the lower receivers shortened
and flared mag well which allows for
compatibility with most, if not all,
magazines and drums. Its aggressive inner
flaring speeds up magazine insertions
and ambidextrous trigger finger swells
in line with the outer ledge of the mag
well provides a deliberate trigger finger
index for large hands. For those who
do not wear a size large shooting glove,
ambidextrous ledges milled into the
middle of the receiver provide trigger
finger indexing for medium-sized hands
and cutouts in the trigger guard provide
the same for smaller hands.
Being billet, the receivers are precision
CNC machined from industry standard
7075-T6 aluminum and finished in a
type III class II matte black hard coat
anodize. The receivers design removes
excess materials from viable areas without
hindering reliability and while providing
a modern aesthetic unique to UTG Pro.
Overall melted receiver geometry reduces
snag points and hot spots. A lower to
upper receiver tensioning screw comes
standard. It is important to note that both
UTG Pro lowers remain fully compatible
with most uppers in the marketplace.
A tapered rear flattop upper provides
shooters with a better purchase on
charging handles with or without gloves
and is particularly useful if ever having
to mortar their rifle to clear a severe
stoppage malfunction. The flattop is
machined with an additional Picatinny
slot compared to a standard upper.
PREPARE YOUR
FIREARMS FOR
AMMUNITION
CHANGE
As many shooters transition to lead-free shot, gun
cleaning experts Ballistol talks through the process
of keeping your firearms in tip-top condition.
42 WWW.GUNTRADEWORLD.COM
BALLISTOL
The perfect interaction between
firearms and ammunition is
crucial for high precision.
Ammunition of the same
calibre and type from different
batches or different manufacturers can
feature different ballistic properties due
to distinctive manufacturing processes
and compositions.
In order to quickly regain the
accustomed accuracy after an ammunition
or batch change, a basic cleaning with
subsequent firing is highly recommended.
The current legal situation forces
many shooters to change from projectiles
containing lead to lead-free types.
Lead-free ammunition features different
ballistic properties than lead-containing
projectiles. In terms of cleaning, however,
both ammunition types hardly differ.
Required equipment: Barrel cleaner,
gun oil, accessories (pieces of felt +
cleaning rod).
Layers of depositions form inside the
barrel. These alternately consist of soot
and powder residues, as well as copper
and tombac depositions. Ballistol Robla
Solo MIL Barrel Cleaner removes
copper and tombac without leaving any
residues. Since then, hardly any other
barrel cleaner has achieved nearly as good
cleaning properties as Robla Solo MIL.
Soot and powder layers can be removed
with efficient gun oils like Ballistol
GUNEX or Ballistol GunCer. The
tried and proven Ballistol Universal-Oil
provides good service here, too.
Above mentioned layers of depositions
have to be removed in changing cleaning
intervals layer by layer. For cleaning,
the individual agents are applied on a
cleaning patch, pieces of felt, tow or wick,
and pulled or pushed through the barrel
from the chamber to the muzzle. Years
of practical experience have shown that
Ballistol felts offer decisive advantages
over other cleaning utensils. They
optimally adapt to calibre size and ensure
suitable contact pressure during cleaning.
First, soak one piece of felt in gun
oil and slide it from the chamber to
the muzzle through the barrel. After
waiting for about three minutes, remove
the soot depositions by passing dry felts
through the barrel. The cleaning effect
can be seen in a discolouration of the
felts. When heavily soiled, soot turns
dark grey to black. Once this has been
removed, it is time to dissolve the copper
and tombac. To do this, soak a felt in
Robla Solo MIL, run it through the
barrel and let the cleaner work for five to
ten minutes. Then remove the dirt with
felts. The discolouration of the felts this
time shows green or bluish tones. The
two cleaning steps should now be carried
out alternately to remove the layers on
top of each other. If neither dirt nor
colour residues are visible in either case,
the cleaning process is complete. For
corrosion protection, it is recommended
to saturate a felt with a little oil and then
pull it through the barrel.
In case of extreme contamination, the
barrel can also be filled with Robla Solo
MIL. The barrel is sealed at the muzzle
and filled up to above the chamber with
Robla Solo MIl. Damage to the barrel
is thereby excluded. The rifle is to be
placed in the gun cabinet overnight
with the muzzle pointing downwards.
This procedure must not be used for
gas pressure loaders with a gas channel.
Cleaning must be carried out the next
day. Ballistol also offers intensive felts.
These contain fine brass fibres and thus
produce a more intensive mechanical
cleaning effect.
After thorough cleaning, it’s off to
the shooting range. Here the weapon
is tested for precision. In addition,
ammunition and weapon adjust to each
other and then show the usual reliable
accuracy.
A thorough cleaning of the weapon
is not only important when changing
ammunition. Deposits do not only
influence the internal ballistics, but
also the projectile velocity. The DEVA
e.V. was able to determine that bullet
lubrication in barrels affect the muzzle
velocity (V0) and respectively accuracy.
Due to reduced velocity of a bullet, it
can be assumed that gas pressure in the
barrel of the weapon also increases. This
endangers the shooter due to damage to
the firearm.
As the inventor of gun oil, Ballistol
recommends basic cleaning with the
chemical barrel cleaner Robla Solo MIL
at least once a year for hunters. With
a higher firing frequency, as is usual
for sporting or professional shooters,
correspondingly more often.
LEVER ACTION
FIRES
PEDERSOLI SALES
2022 saw an important review of the Lever Action Boarbuster
rifle platform from Italian experts Pedersoli. Introduced back
in 2013 as the first Lever Action rifle version in its range, this
updated range is ready to take on the world.
44 www.guntradeworld.com
Since 2013, the Italian company,
gaining experience thanks to
the continuous feedback with
international customers, has
been able to introduce a series
of changes aimed at further increasing
the performance of the rifle. Updates
like the launched firing pin, the safety
system and more comfort and equipping
possibilities have given customers an
even more well-rounded rifle.
Below are the specific characteristics
of these rifles addressed to hunting
medium and large game.
Increased “loop” loading
lever, or interchangeable loop
loading lever
The use of protective gloves requires
larger dimensions of the lever loop and
the new increased loading lever covers
this need. However, the ergonomic
profile allows users to maintain the
comfort of use even with bare hands. For
the most demanding customers, there are
models available with interchangeable
loading lever, solid, but easy to replace at
the same time.
based film, making them water repellent
and increasing grip at the same time.
Aiming Devices
The modernity of a system is also
in the capacity of adapting to the
latest generation of accessories. The
Boarbuster rifles are equipped with a
Picatinny scope base to mount long focal
scopes or red point optics. However,
if a user wants to use open sights, it is
possible to use the integrated rear sight,
associated with the front sight, both with
fiber optic inserts. In addition, there
is the possibility to assemble a special
dedicated side scope base to the action,
thanks to pre-drilled holes.
Microcell Buttpad
Made of relevant absorption material,
the recoil of the Boarbuster rifles is
extremely comfortable, reducing the
recoiling force to a significant extent.
Adjustable stocks
The Boarbuster Shadow and Mark
II models finally allow the vertical
and lateral adjustments of the stock,
extremizing the capacity of adaptation
The Evolution Model
With action coated with Cerakote
titanium finish, interchangeable loop
loading lever and stock made of selected
walnut, oil finish and protected with
“Silicon Grip” film.
The Mark II Model
With metal parts coated with Cerakote
bronze finish, interchangeable loop
loading lever, adjustable stock made of
walnut, finished black and protected with
“Silicon Grip” film.
The designated calibre is .45-
70 Government, also revisited in
performance, thanks to brands like
Hornady, Remington and Federal, capable
of tight shots over 100 meters of distance
and with muzzle speed exceeding 550
meters/sec.
About
Since Davide Pedersoli celebrated its
Safety Feature
The mechanical safety at the hammer,
makes for a safe and reliable rifle in
difficult environments.
Stock and forend with
optimised profile
The use of powerful performing
cartridges requires a firm grip of the
rifle and a safe support for the face. The
new forend with increased profile allows
a very firm grip, while the stock, with a
comb that has been raised by more than
one centimeter, allows for perfect visual
alignment, keeping full contact even
when using modern optical devices.
Silicon Grip Film
Hunting often takes place in wet and
demanding environments, the stock
and forend of the Boabuster rifles are
protected with an innovative Silicon-
and customisation of aims to the
maximum levels.
Five Versions
The Lever Action Boarbuster family
includes five different versions, each with
specific distinctive features:
The Shadow Model
and ballistic precision of Pedersoli guns,
features that made them popular among
target shooters and hunters worldwide.
Davide Pedersoli has always distinguished
itself by its historical research of the
guns to reproduce, to identify some of
the most important steps in the gun
manufacturing tradition of eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries European and
American firearms. A rewarding choice
that has allowed the company to relive
epic creations and, with the passage
of time, believe in a real lifestyle and
promote every aspect of it. The company
has also developed a strong bond with
“re-enactment” groups, an area in which
scholars and collectors always show the
utmost attention to detail and to the
faithful historical reproduction of various
models.
CZ MASTER ENGRAVER
TRIBUTE
TO LEGENDS
A LIMITED-EDITION RUN FROM CZ & COLT
48 WWW.GUNTRADEWORLD.COM
This unique,
50-piece limited
edition consists of
a pair of legendary,
richly decorated
pistols that are
housed together
in a special case
that not only
celebrates last
year’s merger
of two globally
renowned
manufacturers of
small arms – Colt
and CZ – but also
commemorates
important
anniversaries for
the iconic brands.
With the acquisition of the
American Colt brand in May
2021, an extraordinarily strong
international group was born,
with an ambition to be the
world leader in the manufacture of small arms.
At the core of Colt CZ Group are two renowned
companies: Colt, whose factory is located in
West Hartford, Connecticut, and CZ with its
production plant in the Czech city of Uhersky
Brod. The former celebrated its 185th anniversary
last year, while the latter is exactly one hundred
years its junior.
The idea to produce this unique edition was
born from close cooperation between the two
“sisters”, Colt and CZ. An iconic model was
chosen from each brand to make up the set: the
American Colt 1911 pistol and the Czech CZ 75
pistol.
All decorative engravings on the “Tribute
to Legends” edition were undertaken by the
internationally respected Master Engraver, Rene
Ondra. Serial production firearms that Ondra
transforms into high value works of art have
become sought-after investments in recent years.
Charity auction
Only 50 sets will be produced as part of this
edition.
The Colt CZ Group donated the first set to a
charity auction organized by the Kodl Gallery in
the Czech Republic. Proceeds from the auction
will be donated to the Military Solidarity Fund,
the Police and Firefighters Foundation, and the
fundraising bank account of the Embassy of
Ukraine in the Czech Republic to support the
Ukrainian army.
Sets intended for the commercial market will
represent an extremely interesting collector’s item
and most probably a highly profitable investment.
Please note that both pistols are fully functional
and can only be purchased by holders of a valid
firearm licence.
Decorative touches
Similar modifications have been made to the
American and Czech pistols in the “Tribute
to Legends” edition, which serve to unify their
artwork. The choice of font and engravings was
inspired by descriptions of North American guns
from the 19th century, along with the decorative
touches that were common during that time
period. Creative direction was mainly driven
by the historic Colt firearms, which are famous
in this respect and are of particular interest to
collectors.
The result is an aesthetically matched set of two
magnificent guns that feature the same high-gloss
bluing, polished barrels, gold-plated controls
and maple grips that come with the brand’s logo,
which also serves as checkering.
Master engraver
Rene Ondra is a Master Engraver of firearms,
who ranks among the world’s best in the field.
He is mainly focused on creating highly precise
engravings on CZ products, which take dozens
of hours to carry out and are key in transforming
each firearm into an immensely valuable work of
art.
Ondra started his apprenticeship in 1986 at CZ
and gained experience from the leading master
engravers at that time in the Czech Republic.
Starting in the 1990s, he often made trips
abroad to learn about the latest trends in the
industry, seek out exclusive production materials
and forge relationships with customers. He
was the first Master Engraver from the Czech
Republic to gain international membership in the
prestigious Firearms Engravers Guild of America,
an association of firearms engravers in the USA.
Rene is the designer of many iconic firearms,
including the CZ 75 REPUBLIKA.
Engravings
Both pistols have the frame and slide decorated
with hand-engraved adornments in the style
of 19th century American firearms. A special
custom engraving tool was especially made for
this purpose. The placement of engravings respects
the contours of the model and fits together with
the descriptions and serial numbers on the pistol.
The steel magazine base plate on the CZ 75 also
comes with decorative engravings.
Descriptions and numbering
For each pistol, “Tribute to Legends” is engraved
in 19th century style font right behind the name of
the model on the left-hand side of the slide. Also
on the left-hand side of the slide for each model
is its unique number within the 50-piece edition.
On the left-hand side of the CZ 75 “Tribute
to Legends” frame is the decorative inscription
“Hand made in Czech Republic.” On the righthand
side of both models are decorative elements
commemorating the year of establishment for each
brand. The Colt 1911 has a ribbon with the year
1836 and a bald eagle from the Great Seal of the
United States of America. The CZ 75 has a ribbon
with the year 1936 and a double-tailed lion from
the Lesser Coat of Arms of the Czech Republic.
There is a special series of serial numbers for
this edition, which refers to the year the Colt
and CZ brands were united and expresses the
order of manufacture for each pistol within this
limited series. The serial numbers range from
COLT2021001 to COLT2021050 for the Colt
1911 model, and CZ2021001 to CZ2021050 for
the CZ 75 model. The pistols in each individual set
have matching serial numbers.
Case and packaging
For the first time in the history of limited series
from CZ, firearms in this unique “Tribute to
Legends” edition are stored together in a single,
large case. The case is made of maple with
specially imported thick birch root veneer on
the sides. The protective finish on the exterior
of the case is a combination of oil, varnish and
polyurethane.
Each pistol in the set is delivered in a separate
leather briefcase that includes a warranty card,
user manual, cleaning kit, gloves and certificate of
originality.
SOUTHWESTERN
USA
D O I N G B U S I N E S S W I T H . . .
For 2023 we have split up the USA into manageable sections, giving
you even more insight into specific areas within the country. First up,
we take a deep dive into Southwestern United States – could this be
the best region to export your products to in the world?
T
he Southwestern United
States, also known as the
American Southwest or
simply the Southwest, is a
geographic and cultural region
of the United States that
generally comprises Arizona,
New Mexico, and adjacent
sections of California,
Colorado, Nevada, Oklahoma,
Texas, and Utah.
The largest cities by
metropolitan area are
Phoenix, Las Vegas, El Paso,
Albuquerque, and Tucson.
Prior to 1848, in the historical
region of Santa Fe de Nuevo
México as well as parts of
Alta California and Coahuila
y Tejas, settlement was
almost non-existent outside
of Nuevo México’s Pueblos
and Spanish or Mexican
municipalities. Much of the
area had been a part of New
Spain and Mexico until the
United States acquired the
area through the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848
and the smaller Gadsden
Purchase in 1854.
The geography of the
region is mainly made up of
four features: the Mojave,
Sonoran, and Chihuahuan
Deserts, and the Colorado
Plateau; although there are
other geographical features
as well, such as a portion of
hunting
The Southwestern United
States is a hunter’s paradise,
with plentiful land and species
to target. For example, almost
half the land in Arizona is
open for people to hunt under
the guidelines set out by
The Arizona Game and Fish
Department.
As an example, many
different game animals can
be hunted within a short-day
trip from the Phoenix Metro
area. Hunting is allowed yearround
but specific seasons,
areas and permits that must be
adhered to.
Popular animals to hunt
include Dove, Quail, Turkeys,
Pheasants, Javelina, Rabbits,
Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer,
Elk, Deer, Antelope, Black
Bear, Mountain Lions and
even Buffalo. There are many
shops throughout the state
that cater specifically to
hunters.
Southwestern USA is home
both archery and rifle seasons
hunting method in the region.
From the data given to us
in this territory are looking for
Dove in Arizona
It’s good to be back in
the outdoors, and there’s
no better way to kick off
Arizona’s hunting seasons
than by getting together with
family and friends for some
fast-action wingshooting for
doves. The popular 15-day
season gets underway Sept. 1.
Many festivities are
planned in conjunction
with dove season, such as
the World Championship
Dove Cookoff in Yuma and
a mentored youth hunt —
a long time tradition - at
Robbins Butte Wildlife
Area near Buckeye.
Other agriculture-based
communities, which are
magnets for doves, also will
be hosting a variety of fun
activities.
Did you know that
mourning doves are the
most numerous, widespread
game bird in North America?
They are prolific breeders
with an average life span
of 1-2 years. Dove hunting
seasons are regulated
and maintain doves as a
sustainable wildlife resource.
Dove hunters are a valuable
conservation tool.
and Easton on the archery
side, they’re out of Utah
and Silencerco, leader in
suppressors, are based in
Utah. Suppressors have grown
considerable the past few
years, both for recreational
shooting and hunting.
The Arizona Game and
Fish Department follows
a multi-tiered process for
setting hunting season
structures, hunting season
dates, hunt permit allocations,
and other controlling
elements for regulating
hunting of game animals.
The Department’s big
and small game programs
are responsible for this
task and their mission is to
protect and manage game
wildlife populations and
their habitats to maintain
the natural diversity of
Arizona, and to provide game
wildlife-oriented recreation
opportunities for present
and future generations.
This is done by using
science-based methods to
assure wildlife is managed
within the biological
limits of each species,
management strategies are
also developed to consider
social acceptability and
responsibilities.
Arizona’s hunting laws
Although not the whole of
Southwestern United States,
the State of Arizona can act
as a very good case study for
the region as a whole, here we
look at the laws on hunting in
the State.
Laws, rules and regulations
concerning hunting are
complex and varied. There
are state and federal laws
encoded by state and federal
legislation. In addition to
laws, the Arizona Game and
Fish Commission enacts rules
and orders to implement
those laws. The laws, rules
and orders provide guidance
to hunters about when,
where, and how they can take
wildlife, and how much of
each species can be taken.
The Arizona Game and
Fish Commission issues 29
orders for different species.
Each order is reviewed and
potentially revised every year
or two by the Commission,
based on science-based
recommendations from
wildlife managers. These
29 orders create a complex,
dynamic set of regulations
for hunters to follow. But the
system must be managed this
way in order for managers to
be agile enough to respond to
the suite of factors affecting
wildlife on an annual basis.
It is the responsibility of
the hunter to help make the
regulations, understand and
follow the regulations, as well
as help enforce them.
Where can you find the
rules governing hunting
in Arizona?
Most Arizona Game and Fish
laws and rules concerning
hunting (and fishing) are
contained in the Arizona
Revised Statutes (Title 17)
and in Arizona Administrative
Rules (Title 12). In some
cases, hunting matters are
under federal jurisdiction
(for example, species under
the Migratory Bird Treaty
Act, such as waterfowl), with
details available in the Code of
Federal Regulations, etc.
Arizona Hunting and
Trapping Regulations are
published frequently and
contain information such as
hunt season dates, methods
of take, hunt units, limits,
tag application deadlines
and draw details, restrictions,
recommendations, and more.
The regulations are available at
Arizona Game and Fish offices
or authourised hunting/fishing
license dealers, or they can be
downloaded.
Turkey in Texas
Every serious turkey hunter deserves
Texas in their spring plans at least once.
Many of us have made a habit of it.
For the most part, the Lone Star
State is a pay-to-hunt stop. On the best
ranches, locals hired by the outfitter, if
only as drop-off/pick-up guys, will put
you on birds and let you have at them
in semi-guided style. Non-residents
typically employ the services of an
outfitter, which is often more expensive
than a traditional DIY gobbler hunt, but
far less costly than booking, say, a Texas
whitetail trip.
Texas turkeys usually aren’t hard
to find, as roost cover is often limited
on big cattle ranches. Birds roost in
thick-branched oak motts, small groves
which surround open fields, and even
on power lines or old windmills. Roosts
are almost always a short walk to a
water source, and since it’s Texas, full
disclosure: there are feeders.
southwestern usa
Deer in Colorado
The overwhelming majority of the
whitetails shot in Colorado are taken
in the eastern third of the state. Most
of these are taken by spot-and-stalk
tactics in the open plains, though some
stand hunting does occur along the
riverbottoms east of Denver.
The state ranks high in the number of
record book bucks as a ratio to the overall
harvest because of this. Hunters can
choose which deer they plan to hunt as
they look them over through optics from
a distance.
Naturally, most hunters choose to
pursue the largest bucks they see that day.
Shooting
Southwestern United
States has one of the most
active competitive shooting
sectors in the US, with
shootings travelling from a
far to compete in the many
tournaments held here.
You can find competitions
for USPSA, IDPA, SASS,
ICORE and IPSC to name a
few in the State of Arizona
as well as neighbouring
States.
There are many shops that
cater to competition pistol
and rifle shooters and users
that like to handload their
ammunition.
Arizona is recognized as
a “Shooter’s Mecca”. Infact,
Guns and Ammo magazine
has rated Arizona the
number one state for gun
owners for nine years in a
row. This is due in part to
the relaxed gun laws, high
numer of shooting ranges
and access to land. About 97
per cent of BLM (Bureau of
Land Management) managed
public lands within Arizona
are available to “dispersed
recreational shooting”.
Notable outdoor ranges
within the Phoenix Metro
area are;
Ben Avery Shooting
Facility, which hosts the
annual SASS “End of Trail”.
The Phoenix Rod and
Gun Club hosts the annual
Arizona State Revolver
Championship - an ICORE
competitors)
The Rio Salado
Sportsman’s Club plays host
to the annual USPSA Area 2
Championship with over 300
competitors. There is also the
General Joe Foss Shooting
Complex situated in the area.
There are also many indoor
shooting ranges.
NRL Hunter has
RELEVANCE
Dupree International’s Managing Director,
Martin Dupree, looks at how strategic branding
management can break down borders.
A
few years ago, Dupree had
the experience of taking
on the marketing for an
International hunting
clothing client, with the
brief of increasing sales in the UK. This
company had already been marketing
to the UK but without considering the
cultural differences in that territory.
When we embarked on generating
some localised insight into the current
position of this brand, we discovered
that many British hunters wouldn’t
wear it because they couldn’t relate to it.
It had an unusual name, used the term
‘hunting’ (in the UK recreational hunting
is termed ‘shooting’ or ‘stalking’) and the
advertising used photographic images
that were not taken in the UK. Even
the dog breeds in the photos looked
unfamiliar and the quarry was sometimes
displayed as trophies when the British
hunter would feel uncomfortable with
this.
All things considered, even an early
adopter of new brands would have
thought twice under these circumstances
for fear of losing credibility within
their peer group. When we asked an
editor of a leading hunting magazine
in the UK what his view was on this
clothing brand, he said he had been sent
a jacket and trousers for review but had
not conducted a product test because
he felt the brand was not suitable for
his readership. These items were left
hanging on a rail in the office, collecting
dust. In a word, the brand was lacking
‘relevance’.
After a process of reviewing the core
values and identifying the relevance of
this brand and running an advertising
campaign that identified with the UK
market, things changed very quickly.
Photographic shoots were arranged
in the UK using familiar backdrops,
models and dogs and Dupree created a
narrative that resonated with the British
hunter. A brand personality and tone of
voice were rolled out through various
marketing channels and within a matter
of months there was a dramatic increase
in UK sales. Within a couple of years,
the UK was leading sales in Europe. I
spoke to the same editor at that time
when I spotted him wearing this brand
from head to toe, and he said it was the
best hunting clothing he’d ever had. His
perception had clearly changed, while
the product line remained the same
56 WWW.GUNTRADEWORLD.COM
during that time.
It is often assumed that the messaging
around brands which might be very
successful on their own turf, will
resonate equally well around the world.
But this assumption has often been
proven to be the downfall of marketing
campaigns of small ambitious companies
through to household-named giants.
The brand framework shouldn’t alter
but the imagery and wording should be
‘localised’ to each specific country.
Not all companies have ambitions
of the whole world becoming their
operating market, but when considering
expansion into just one more country
may need more consideration than
some might think. This is especially
true with what is
often referred to as
brand expression
or proposition.
‘Empathy’ is a key
word in all this
and at the route of
all good branding,
marketing and advertising.
Brands, like people, usually only get
one chance to make a first impression, so
it’s important to think a brand strategy
through very carefully – you might not
get a chance to successfully re-introduce
them to a marketplace once people have
formed their own opinions about them.
That doesn’t mean that introductions
have to disguise their identity, but deliver
their values in a way that resonates with
geographical or cultural differences. It’s
all about building positive perceptions,
leading to increased engagement.
This might sound complex, but global/
international branding management can
easily be achieved once the mindset of a
‘one-size-fits-all’ approach is abandoned.
What is global branding?
This is the term used for the strategic
management of increasing the strength
and recognition of a brand in different
regions of the world and in the markets in
which it operates.
Crucially, it involves identifying what
perceptions are currently, what you want
them to be and planning how to generate
that perception change – not only
country by country but sometimes with
consideration within regions. We call it
closing the perception gap.
In order to push your products into
another country or delivering to several
countries, global branding requires you
to ‘turn the volume up or down’ with
brand elements including the core values
which need to be preserved globally but
applied with sensitivity to each region.
A large American company that we
service accepted that their brand was
at a different stage of its life journey in
the US than in Europe, so they couldn’t
“Well-known brands that are thriving
locally can be faceless globally.”
refer to the ‘heroes’ that use their
products outside the US straight away in
Germany for instance, because Germans
wouldn’t know who those heroes were.
Once a proposition is adapted, while
still supporting the core values, that
proposition needs to underpin any
claims and promises through advertising,
social media and any digital exposure
including the website. This requires and
investment in time and money to do it
properly.
Content and channels
While deciding upon content, it cannot
be assumed that countries have similar
take-up with marketing channels. It
might come as a surprise, but the US
ranked around 25th in the world for
social media usage. And certain channels
can be out of favour with some cultures
– in Germany, for instance, Twitter is
not so popular because their words are
quite long and the platform is deemed
too public. So, when running the
numbers and deciding where to invest
in media placement, brand owners need
to familiarise themselves with quite a
complex landscape for maximum ROI.
Brands vs Commodities
Brand managers can initially be
concerned about diluting the brand
message when tailoring the messaging
by region but, if done correctly, this
approach strengthens the brand. For
brands that have already succeeded
in gaining regional market share
and want to grow further, expanding
into other countries could bring
obvious advantages – like reaching
more customers in new markets and
strengthening sales. But one major
advantage is that,
as the company
expands worldwide,
the brand itself
becomes its
greatest asset.
In a market
where B2B sales
through tenders can form the biggest
sales segment, many manufacturers
believe that purchasing decisions are
based almost entirely on price. If you
accept this is the case and invest less in
brand development, then your products
will naturally become commodity items
and you will compete purely in a price
war. Strong brands command premium
prices, even in B2B environments
because procurements officers are
also consumers and consumers love
associating themselves with brands.
Also, they will often be influenced by
others within their organisations.
Enforce Tac, the international security exhibition, experienced a
fantastic 2022 show despite the difficult global circumstances at
the time. Now, for 2023, the show is going to be even bigger,
as Gun Trade World discovers.
58 www.guntradeworld.com
EnforceTac 2022 took place
in Nuremberg, Germany in
March, a time when Russia
had just begun its invasion of
the Ukraine. This represented
an uncertain time for buyers and
sellers, nevertheless the exhibition
displayed good numbers - 373
exhibitors as well as 4,071 professionals
visited the event, held during the two
days before IWA OutdoorClassics.
The history
The growing interest in an
international, but above all discreet,
exchange on law enforcement, security
and tactical equipment led to the
premiere of Enforce Tac in 2012 as an
independent, closed special exhibition
in the NürnbergMesse congress center.
Since then, Enforce Tac has
developed impressively. In 2022, 373
exhibitors as well as 4,071 visitors
came to Enforce Tac in Nuremberg.
The success convinced the trade of the
shows’ relevance and importance. The
EnforceTac team discovered that 96
per cent of exhibitors reached their
most important target groups and
94 per cent of exhibitors made new
business connections.
Record-breaking display area
for Enforce Tac 2023
Recently it was disclosed that, as early
as six months before the opening of
trade fair for tactical solutions for
internal and external security, the
display area booked is 15 percent
higher than at the record-breaking
2022 event. It’s a result that can
be attributed to the high level of
satisfaction among exhibitors and
visitors.
“This represents a huge tick of
approval for us and the work we are
doing,” says the Enforce Tac organising
team. “The participating exhibitors
meticulous accreditation process ensure
a high quality of visitors that is much
appreciated.”
Expansion for 2023
In 2023, the professional audience
at Enforce Tac can look forward to
17,520 square meters
of exhibition space, much more
than before (13,730 m2 in 2019). To
get to the highly specialised product
range on display, visitors will now
use Mitte Entrance rather than West
Entrance. The restricted exhibition
area is complemented by practical
workshops and high-calibre congresses.
The programme also offers a blend
of old favourites and new highlights.
The trade fair’s response to the great
diversity of exhibitors and products has
been to expand the demonstration area.
In 2023, alongside the exciting product
presentations, Enforce Tac will also
offer live demonstrations of practical
applications to join the dots between
theory and practice. Exhibitors are
called upon to take advantage of this
opportunity and even provide input for
the design of this area. “For example,
if an exhibitor needs a demonstration
track to effectively showcase a vehicle,
we can arrange this,” says Isabelle
Teufert, Director of Enforce Tac at
NürnbergMesse.
Online, the sector will also benefit
from the digital presentation of several
product highlights. In 2023, the
YouTube format Enforce Tac TV will
go into its second round, bridging the
gap between online and ‘on-demand’.
Excitement about reunion of
the sector
There is a huge anticipation about
the reunion of the sector that only
an on-site exhibition can offer.
Exhibitors are excited to be showing
off their latest products in a vibrant
and expanding exhibition. Isabelle
Teufert commented: “At an in-person
event, exhibitors, visitors and media
representatives all get talking to one
another. As an international platform,
Enforce Tac offers the ideal venue for
professional dialogue and a confidential
atmosphere.”
At the end of the first day of the
exhibition visitors can look forward to
a social get-together, participants can
look forward to an incredibly special
schedule to celebrate the 10th round of
EK ARCHERY
Ek Archery
advances
defensive
tactical
products
Whipshot
Leading technologies have given rise to a new tactical archery
platform that users can feel confident in when deploying as
home self-defence tools.
By the mid-17th century, firearms
had rendered bows obsolete on
conventional battlefields; however,
they continued to be an effective weapon
for asymmetrical warfare in conflicts
around the world for another 200 years.
While the lethality of an arrow is without
question, very few would wish to bring
a bow to gun fight. Consequently, bows
and crossbows fell into the realm of
Sports and Traditional Hunting where
they continued to evolve through the
development of high-tech materials and
modern fabrication techniques.
As a manufacturer of an extensive
range of archery products, Ek Archery
Research has been in the business of
product development in both the sports
and hunting sectors of the industry
for three decades. It was from this
perspective that Ek saw the potential
in providing a new range of products
for the multi-billion-dollar emergencypreparedness
market. In countries that
have strict or prohibitive firearm-control
laws, urban survivalists and “preppers” are
a large consumer base that lack effective,
ranged weapons for defensive purposes.
Built from the ground up
The problem with the sports recurve
bow or hunting crossbow pressed ad
hoc into a defence role is the two-fold
problem of low-rate of fire and the
extensive investment of time needed
to become proficient in a variety of
environments. Punching holes in
paper and harvesting game inform
the design parameters of modern
archery equipment in ways that make it
unsuitable for kinetic defence scenarios.
To resolve these problems Ek
Archery built a new platform from the
ground up by envisioning how a “nonfirearm”
device like a crossbow could
operate more effectively in a CQC
situation. Primarily, the need for heavy
draw weights and high velocities are
unnecessary as the effective operational
range would be within 50 meters.
By scaling down the limbs of the
crossbow to the threshold of effective
bolt penetration the device could
become significantly more compact.
An interchangeability of quick-change,
recurve limbsets in different poundage’s
would allow the operator to tune this
carbine crossbow to personal preferences.
Eschewing the scopes of hunting
crossbows for a reflex-type red-dot
sight would allow a new user to develop
effective accuracy for defensive shortrange
situations.
VLAD
EK ARCHERY
“In countries that have strict or prohibitive
ranged weapons for defensive purposes.”
High Speed Cycling
While there is no doubt that staring
down the rail of a cocked crossbow
is a formidable deterrent; it is still a
one-shot affair. Only with the ability
to produce reasonably sustained fire
could the crossbow evolve into a true
defence platform. Since cocking a
traditional crossbow is an unwieldy affair
of cranks and ropes, the design team
at Ek, inspired by lever action rifles,
incorporated a cocking arm into the
frame of the crossbow which allows the
weapon to be cycled at high speed. The
coupling of this cocking lever with an
integral top-loading magazine developed
by Ek Archery and Jorg Sprave realised
the possibility of a true tactical crossbow
in the Cobra System R-Series product
line.
Powerful Deterrent
The Cobra System Adder RX is the
first crossbow since the ancient Chinese
“Chu-Ko-Nu” that can lay down
continued suppressive fire. However, the
similarity stops there, because unlike its
underpowered progenitor, the Adder’s
magazine holds five 7.5in 190gr. carbon
fibre bolts that achieve 270fps. Held
down by spring loaded arm, the bolts
reliably feed through different shooting
positions and the magazine is easily
reloaded in the dark or on the move.
Introduced this year, a new 2.0 version
of the magazine offers an improved
7-shot capacity and is completely
compatible with earlier Adder crossbows.
Whip it Good with the Whipshot!
The Whipshot is a magazine and
cocking system that bolts onto Ek’s short
axle-to-axle Anvil compound bow. This
configuration is appropriately named
because in less than ten seconds the
operator can put six 260gr. 15in arrows
downrange at up to 240 fps. The Anvil
compound bow is highly adjustable to
fit the preferred draw length and draw
weight of the operator. Using a reflex
sight mounted on the magazine a novice
can quickly master rapid shooting
techniques. The Whipshot has intuitive
pump style cycling, reminiscent of a
shotgun’s operation, and the arrow is
released with a thumb trigger.
Small, but Fierce
The VLAD is a sub-carbine repeater
crossbow built around the 6.5in
aluminum bolt used by the ubiquitous
Cobra pistol crossbow. Like the R-Series
crossbows the VLAD features a quickchange
limbset system that allows the
user to choose a poundage that suits
its application. With 90lb limbs the
VLAD puts its bolts on target at 200fps,
delivering up to 19 joules of impact.
What makes the VLAD so effective is
that it features an integral 8-shot top fed
magazine that can be replenished in a
second with a speedloader.
These Ek Archery Research
magazine-fed archery platforms can
be upgraded with a number of tactical
goodies and there are already a decent
number of aftermarket companies
offering an interesting range of
formidable specialized broadhead bolts
and arrows to feed your beast.
Mossberg adds 7mm
PRC to Patriot Predator
Bolt-Action Series
MOSSBERG
Mossberg now offers the latest Hornady
Precision Rifle Cartridge, 7mm PRC, in its series
of Patriot Predator bolt-action rifles.
Designed to outperform existing 7mm
cartridges in a standard long-action
rifle, the 7mm PRC is a match-grade
cartridge that delivers consistent velocity and
repeatable accuracy. The 7mm PRC is the
perfect “match” for Mossberg’s purpose-built,
suppressor-ready Patriot Predator platform.
Two synthetic-stocked models are available
with 24-inch barrel length and 1:8 twist rate
to maximize the performance of the 7mm
PRC cartridge.
The Patriot Predator bolt-action is based
on Mossberg’s proven twin-lug push-feed
machined-steel action, fed from a flush
polymer magazine. The free-floating, carbon
steel barrel is threaded (5/8”-24 threads
per inch) for ease of adding a suppressor or
muzzle brake; includes a protective thread
cap; has a 11-degree match crown; and
is fluted. For the addition of optics, the
Patriot Predator is equipped with a receiver
mounted Picatinny rail. Patriot rifles feature
Mossberg’s patented LBA (Lightning Bolt
Action) user-adjustable trigger with a two
to seven-pound range of adjustment for
consistent shot placement. Rounding out
this full-featured rifle is an oversized bolt
handle; spiral-fluted bolt; and sling swivel
studs.
Stock options include a Flat Dark Earth
stock with matte blue metal finish (28170)
and TrueTimber Strata camouflaged
stock with complementing Patriot Brown
Cerakote metal finish (28171).
The world’s best
pro-shot
Mark and Cherie Blake, retired Australian Army sniper and Officer respectively, are
perhaps the most successful husband and wife competitive shooting team on the planet.
Gun Trade World finds out more about this fruitful international partnership and why
they count on Pro-Shot Products.
The relationship Mark and Cherie Blake
have with Pro-Shot Products has
been a long one, and Mark Blake has
depended on the company’s products to keep
him at the top of his game.
“I have had a long relationship with Pro-
Shot Products,” says Mark. “Whilst I was a
sniper in the Australian Army, I purchased
Pro-Shot bronze brushes, jags and stainlesssteel
cleaning rods as their quality was far
superior than the Army issued products.
Since that time, I have used Pro Shot
Products exclusively in all my hunting and
competition firearms. In my opinion you
cannot find better products.”
Using quality cleaning products is crucial
to success at the highest level of competitive
shooting, as Mark explains.
“In our competitive shooting, Action or
Bianchi, you cannot have ‘make up’ shots or
redo’s after a malfunction, so it’s imperative
that our pistols perform for every shot, with
Pro-Shot cleaning products we ensure we
get the reliability needed.
“My range bag always has Pro Shot Zero
Friction lubricant, D-14 Fouling Blaster/
Degreaser, “Bench Rest Quality” bronze
brushes, Spear Tip Jags, Cotton Flannel
Patches and a Premium coated cleaning rod
to ensure our handguns function flawlessly,”
says Mark.
We asked Cherie to pick out some of the
couples’ most notable wins, she commented:
“It’s hard to beat the feeling of winning
a Bianchi Cup, and I’m fortunate to have
won twice (2017, 2019) but also to win a
World Championship (2018) was amazing.
However, this year’s Australian National
Championship, where Mark and I came
first and second was a pretty great feeling,
after such a disrupted couple of COVID
years it’s great to be shooting some good
scores again.
“We are both excited to be selected to
represent Australia at the 2023 Bianchi
Cup, and we can’t wait to get back to the
US and compete against the best of the best
at the Cup.
